December 24 Merry Christmas Iloista Joulua

Jouluaaton väri on oranssinpunainen, jonka olen värjännyt omassa puutarhassa kasvatetuilla krappijuurilla.

IN ENGLISH
Christmas colour is orange red, which I have dyed with my own grown madder.
For me it is a special colour. I've sown the seeds maybe eight years ago, and harvested the roots last year. Madder grows quite slowly here, and I am so happy has survived the winters, even though it has never produced seeds in my garden. It gives so much satisfaction to grow something from seeds, and then dye with it after many years of growing.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OF YOU, AND VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR 2020!

December 23 Another green Lisää vihreää

IN ENGLISH
December 23 colour is also green.
Here everyone waits for white Christmas, and if there is no snow, like this year, they say it is black Christmas. To me Christmas without snow is green. In the forests it is green, moss and spruce trees are green. Even in the garden the grass is still green, and in shade beds there are many evergreen plants, like hellebores.
Today's green is dyed with autumn apple tree leaves and natural indigo, and it is a bit semisolid. It is like dark moss green.

December 22 Dark Green Tumman vihreää

Tämän päivän lanka on tumman vihreää, kaupassa täällä.

IN ENGLISH
Today's yarn is dark forest green, in my shop here.
It is dyed on natural grey base first with natural indigo, so that it becomes dark greyish blue. Then it is mordanted with alum and dyed with dried weld, so that the colour becomes green.
Weld itself gives quite strong cold yellow, which I think goes very well with indigo to produce greens.
I use 50g of dried weld to 100g of yarn, and I put one or two tablespoonfuls of washing soda to the soaking water (because our water is acidic). It is better to only simmer weld, not boil vigorously. Hard boiling changes the colour to more cloudy. I don't know why this happens with weld, but something changes in it's dyes if it is boiled too hard, or if   the actual dyeing is kept too hot for too long.

December 21 Madder and cochineal Krappi ja kokenilli yhdessä

Tänään lanka on punaiseksi värjättyä Velhoa, kaupassa täällä.

IN ENGLISH
Today I have red Velho yarn, in my shop here.
I often dye red with a combination of madder and cochineal. Madder gives good strong colour by itself, but it is a bit orange red. If I put madder dyed yarn in cochineal bath, then the colour shifts to more blueish red. If I dye yellow yarn with cochineal, the result is pink, and I never get a really strong colour with yellow plus cochineal, like I can get with madder and cochineal, or with cochineal by itself. It is also possible to combine madder and cochineal baths, and dye with that bath (so that you don't need to dye twice). However then it is better to start off  with a madder bath and dye yarns in it for 30-60 minutes before adding the extracted cochineal bath to it, only 2% cochineal is often enough. Madder attaches itself slower than cochineal, which faster dye.
I'm sometimes asked if you need to mordant again when dyeing two times. The answer is that one mordanting is enough, the same mordants  bind more colorants in later baths, too.

December 20 Cochineal Kokenilli

Joulukuun kahdennenkymmenennen päivän väri on värjätty kokenillilla, kaupassa täällä.
Kokenilli on yksi suosituimpia luonnonvärejä.

IN ENGLISH
Colour for December 20th  is dyed with cochineal, in my shop here.
Cochineal is one of the best natural dyes. It comes from insects living on cactus, and it became one of the most important historical dyes after its discovery from Middle America in 500 vuotta sitten. In South and Middle America it had been used for thousands of years. It is very lightfast natural dye, and it gives many different shades of red, violet, purple or pink, which are not easy to get with any other natural dye. At least not as fast and good dyes as from cochineal. The colour depends on mordant, the strength of the bath and acidity, and it is useful to experiment a lot with it. Water used in dyeing with cochineal has great impact on the colour, so every dyer may get a bit different shades from it.

Today's yarn was dyed on grey base yarn, which gives it's own colour to it. This yarn's colour is somewhere between burgundy red to purplish red. A nice strong colour.

December 19 Hydnellum aurantiacum Oranssiorakasväri

Tänään värinä on edelleen orakkailla värjätty.

IN ENGLISH
Today I have another yarn dyed with tooth fungi.
This yarn is a nice green, and dyed with Hydnellum aurantiacum 12 years ago, pictures of them that year. I have never after that gotten the exact same colour, and I have even begun to think if I had identified the mushrooms right. I had 2 kg of fresh mushrooms, which I had cut to small pieces and put in a glass jar with ammonia to soak for two months. Jar wasn't quite tight, because pH had dropped to six by the end of two months, and the liquid with mushroom mush was brownish yellow. I then boiled the bath for two hours with some ammonia added to it, so that ph was 8-9. After boiling I strained the bath, added some cold water, pH was 7.
With this bath I dyed one white skein (premordanted with alum and cream of tartar), and got this nice a bit blueish green. In reality it is a bit uneven colour, that doesn't show in the picture.  From the same bath I got another skein of more greyish light green.

Kaksi tummempaa lankaa on värjätty männynsuomuorakkailla.

IN ENGLISH
Today I have a selection of yarns dyed also with tooth fungi: Sarcodon squamosus and Hydnellum suaveolens, in my shop here.
These colours are difficult to describe, they are not blue, but not really green either, but something in between, and also even though they are dyed on white yarn, they are a bit greyish colours. Very pretty in their own way even if not bright colours.

The two darker colours are dyed with Sarcodon squamosus. The mushrooms were old partly rotted mushrooms, and I used 10kg of fresh mushrooms to 100g of yarn. When boiling the mushrooms the pH was raised with ammonia, but when dyeing the pH was 7-8, just a bit above neutral.
The bottom colour was dyed with Hydnellum suaveolens mushroom, with young mushrooms and so the colour became lighter.
In my experience an important thing with dyeing with tooth fungi is that the mushrooms need to be old. I have never gotten good dark colour from young mushrooms. Another thing is that you need to have really a lot of mushrooms in relation to yarn. One or two mushrooms is no use, you need to have a bucketful. When extracting the colour from the tooth fungi, the pH needs to be high, and I have also noticed that the mushrooms need to strained right away after boiling (unless you use the bath with yarn and mushrooms together in the same bath). It seems that if you leave the bath to cool down with mushrooms in it, some of the dye is absorbed back to the mushrooms from the bath.
Lightfastness in colours from tooth fungi is medium, not as good as in many historical natural dyes, so I wouldn't use these yarns to anything which requires good lightfastness for many years, or which is kept in sunshine.

IN ENGLISH
December 17th yarn is variegated turqoise, dyed with tooth fungi Hydnellum suaveolens.
I had used dried mushrooms 200g/100g yarn. I soaked the dry mushrooms over night, boiled for two hours, and added ammonia in the beginning so that ph was raised to 9. During boiling pH dropped so that I had to add a glug more after the first hour of boiling.
When the dyeing started pH was 7-8, slightly alkaline. I didn't strain the bath, so the mushrooms were still in the bath with yarn when dyeing, so the colour became quite variegated. The yarns were pre mordanted with alum (20%) and cream of tartar (5%).
Colours dyed with tooth fungi are not as lightfast as indigodyed blues and greens, so I don't recommend knitting hats from this yarn. Hats get always so much sun, obviously. This yarn is better for mittens or maybe as a pattern color in a sweater.

December 16 One more Cortinarius colour Vielä yksi verihelttaseitikkiväri

Seitikkivärjäyksistä tuli mieleen, että olen varmaan joskus aiemminkin postannut linkin Riikka Räisäsen väitöskirjaan v 2002 Anthraquinones from the Fungus Dermocybe sanguines as Textile Dyes.

IN ENGLISH
Today the yarn is still dyed with Cortinarius semisanguineus, in my shop here.
It was dyed in the after bath in the yesterday's yarn, so it is clear to see how most of the dyes had attached to the yarn already in the first bath. I think also these lighter colours are needed when knitting, to give contrast. In my eyes all mushroom dyed yarns go very well together, but not all with for instance indigo dyed yarns.

About Cortinarius dyeing: I may have posted already earlier a link to Helsinki University professor Riikka Räisänen's thesis from 2002 Anthraquinones from the Fungus Dermocybe sanguines as Textile Dyes. There is a lot of interesting read about the colorants in Cortinarius mushrooms and dyeing and fastness properties. Riikka is also a head of a project BioColour which started November this year. It will be exciting to read about the results of the project later.

December 15 More Cortinarius semisanguineus Lisää verihelttaseitikkiväriä

IN ENGLISH
Todays yarn is also Velho, which was dyed with dried Cortinarius semisaguineus caps, in my shop here.
This yarn was dyed the same way as yesterdays yarn: boiling water over dry mushrooms, steep for 1-2 minutes, strain and then repeat with fresh boiling water. There were the same amount of dry caps as yarn. The only difference to yesterdays yarn was that I now added one tablespoonful of washing soda to 6 litres of the first boiling water, so that the pH was 9 before I  poured it over the mushrooms. The second boiling water was without washing soda, our normal well water with pH little over six. The first alkaline water either extracted more red dyes from the mushrooms or changed them to such that only the red dyes attached to the yarn. When I dyed the premordanted yarn the bath was pH 6-7, that is slightly acid to neutral, because the second extraction was acid pH 6 and I also added more cold water to the bath to have enough volume to dye the yarns, and these diluted alkaline bath to more neutral.
Many dyer's may have neutral to slightly alkaline water to begin with and there is no need for them to use washing soda. Here it is clear to see how much impact water used in dyeing may have even when the used dye mushrooms were the same and mordanting was the same.
In the picture below there is on the left today's yarn and on the right yesterday's yarn which was extracted in ph 6.

December 14 Cortinarius semisanguineus Verihelttaseitikki

Tämän päivän väri on tumma kuparinoranssi väri, kaupassani täällä.

IN ENGLISH
Todays yarn is copper orange, in my shop here.
It is dyed with dried Cortinarius semisanguineus caps on natural light grey
Velho yarn base.
I usually dye with those mushrooms first soaking them over night, and then simmering (not boiling) for an hour, straining, and then dyeing for an hour in 60-70°C. Or after soaking I put the yarns in the same bath with mushrooms, and start raising the temperature until it is 60°C and keep it there for an hour.
Now I wanted to try the Jenny Dean method I have used recently with madder, and see if it would also work with these dried mushrooms.
I didn't soak the dry mushrooms at all, but instead poured boiling water over them, and let them steep for only two minutes, and then strained the bath. I repeated the process with fresh boiling water on the same mushrooms. The result was very dark red bath, and it looked like the dyes had been released even after so short time.
I used the same amount of dry mushrooms as yarn, which was premordanted with alum and cream of tartar, and dyed the yarn in the bath for an hour.

The method worked brilliantly, and saved a lot of time. The same bath gave me also light second dye. I boiled the used mushrooms yet once more to see if they would release more colour, and they did, but clearly most of the dyes had been in the first two short extractions. Another interesting thing was to see, that afterbath gave me more reddish colour than orange, what I usually get when I extract the colour with my earlier methods.

December 13 Another Cortinarius dyed selection Toinen seitikkivärjätty lajitelma

IN ENGLISH
December 13th yarn is also a selection of oranges from mushrooms, in my shop here.
The darkest one is dyed with Cortinarius semisanguineus caps, the middle one with Cortinarius purpureus, and the yellowish one with Cortinarius  bolaris. C.semisanguineus is the most common dye mushroom in my area, and I dye with it quite a lot. I also have some of the dried caps in my shop.
In good mushroom autumns I can find some Cortinarius purpureus, but not a lot. At first it is difficult to tell apart from C.semisanguineus, but when you are used to it, they are distinct. Also the dye content in them is different from that of C.semisanguineus. I have written about dyeing with them here.
Cortinarius bolaris is not very common either, and it doesn't give oranges typical to other dye Cortinarius mushrooms, but more brown or yellow. Here I have written more about it. The yellow from C.bolaris here is more brownish yellow compared to yesterday's C.malicorus orange yellow.

December 12 Cortinarius selection Lajitelma oransseja

Tänään lankoina on seitikeillä värjätty lajitelma oransseja, kaupassa täällä.
Näistä langoista alin eli tummin on värjätty hurmeseitikillä, Cortinarius purpureus, ja kaksi ylintä tulihelttaseitikeillä, Cortinarius malicorus. Tulihelttaseitikki kasvaa rehevissä kuusimetsissä, eikä kuivissa männiköissä, joita täällä meilläpäin on, eikä siis ole kovin yleinen täällä. Olenkin melkein joka vuosi saanut niitä pienen määrän sieniystävältä. Olen niillä värjännyt langat Oranssiin Tulppaani-lapaspakettiin, eikä niitä lankoja yleensä olekaan riittänyt myytäväksi muuten.

IN ENGLISH
Today's yarn is a selection of oranges, in my shop here.
They are dyed with mushrooms, and the darkest bottom one is dyed with Cortinarius purpureus, and middle and top one are dyed with Cortinarius malicorus. Cortinarius malicorus grows in moist and fertile spruce forests, not in dry pine forests which are more common near our place, and so I can't find it here, but I have a mushroom collecting friend who can find some of them almost every year.  I get a small amount from her, and I dye yarns in Orange Tulips mitten kit with this mushroom, so usually I don't have enough of those yarns to sell otherwise.

IN ENGLISH
Today's yarn is light yellow, corn colour, which I have dyed with lichen Xanthoria parietina. I have dyed it with normal boiling water method, though with this lichen also other colours could be possible with using ammonia method. Many plants can give light yellow, but I love the warm colour of this yarn, and especially the scent of it. Lichens give their own peculiar scent to the yarns which I like very much. Trees from which these lichens were collected, are now felled, so this yarn is also a memory of them.

December 10 Apple tree leaves Omenapuun lehdet

Joulukuun kymmenennen päivän väri on tumman keltainen, kaupassa täällä.

December 9 Medium brown Keskiruskeaa

Joulukuun yhdeksännen päivän lanka on keskiruskeaa, täällä.

IN ENGLISH
December 9th yarn is medium brown, in my shop here.
This yarn is dyed first with walnut hulls and then with madder to give it warmer colour.
Last August I got fresh walnut hulls, with which I dyed brown yarns right away. I left the walnuts soaking for another two months and in late October I dyed with them the second time. Now the colour was quite pale brown, obviously most of the dyes had been used in the first dyeing.
Because the colour was so pale, I dyed these yarns again in a weak madder bath. When using walnut hulls for dyeing there is no need for alum mordant, and also madder can be used without alum, which is why I used madder for these yarns. Without alum the colour will not be red, but more brown and lighter, and it went well on top of pale walnut colour:).

December 8 Brown from Pisolithus Hernekuukusen ruskeaa

Joulukuun kahdeksannen päivän lanka on tummaruskeaa, täällä kaupassa.

IN ENGLISH
December 8th yarn is dark brown, in my shop here.
It is dyed with mushroom Posolithus arhizus. This mushroom doesn't grow near where I live, but in more northern Finland, and not very common even there, but it is a mushroom that can be found all over the world in different continents. I got them from a dyer friend here in Finland many years ago. I also tried to get it to grow near my garden but maybe the soil wasn't right or there wasn't suitable trees for it to grow because none has come up yet.
Pisolithus arhizus is a good dye fungi, and gives colours from golden yellow to dark brown. Actually it is the only natural source to give dark brown besides fresh Juglans walnut hulls. Colour dyed with Pisolithus is not even dark brown, but has subtle different shades of brown in it. Here  and here I have written about dyeing with Pisolithus.

December 7 Green yarn Vihreää lankaa

Joulukuun seitsemännen päivän lanka on heleän vihreä, kaupassa täällä.

IN ENGLISH
December 7th yarn is green, in my shop here.
This colour was first dyed medium blue with my own japanese indigo leaves, and then mordanted with alum and over dyed yellow with Dyer's Polypore, Phaeolus schweinitzii. This combination results in spring green, very nice to my eyes, but it does not necessarily combine harmoniously with some other colours from natural dyes. It goes well with other yellows, greenish yellows and strong oranges, and of course with blues. Olive greens dyed with mushroom Tapinella atrotomentosa look grey when combined with bright yellow green like this yarn, but  Tapinella colours look very good combined with Cortinarius mushroom colours. It is not always easy to combine colours from natural dyes with each other so that the result is good. Maybe this is also a matter of individual taste:).

December 6 Woad Morsinko

Itsenäisyyspäivän kunniaksi tämän päivän lanka on värjätty morsingolla.
Tämän päivän langat on värjätty lokakuussa, toisen sadon lehdillä.

IN ENGLISH
Today is Finnish Independence Day , and to celebrate it, today's colour is dyed with woad, and ancient dye also from here. I don't grow a lot of woad, but some every year:).
In Pohjanmaa, Middle of Finland, there is a new project about growing  woad in a larger scale, Natural Indigo Finland, and I wish them success with it.

I have dyed today's yarns with my own woad which was from second crop in October. I got good strong blue from the leaves I harvested in August, but these October leaves gave quite light blue. We had night frosts in late September, so I'm thinking that maybe that was a reason there wasn't so much indigo in the leaves, even though they still looked ok when I harvested them. Another possibility is that as September was quite rainy and cloudy, the leaves had not enough indigo in them, but I suspect more the frost as a cause of this.
Anyway I still like also this colour! In my shop here.

Kolmas lanka on värjätty harmaahankakarvejäkälillä, Pseudevernia furfuracea.  Kaikki on värjätty valkoiselle langalle.
Paisukarvejäkäliä taas on helppoa kerätä polttopuiksi kaadettavilta lehtipuilta talvella.

IN ENGLISH
December 5th yarns are a selection of small skeins dyed with lichen, in my shop here.
These yellow and greenish yellow skeins were dyed on un mordanted yarn with boiling water method, more of which here. Most lichen dyes are acids and attach strongly to yarn with no other mordant. Two of the yarns were dyed with Hypogymnia physoides, one of the most common lichen here growing on trees, and the top one has iron mordant which changes the colour to more greenish. All are dyed on white yarn. The third yarn was dyed with Pseudevernia furfuracea, which I collect on my morning walks when the lichens have dropped to the road from oaks or birches after windy nights. I never find large amounts of them, just enough during whole year to dye one skein of wool.
When we fell down trees for firewood, I get Hypogymnia lichens from them. I don't recommend collecting lichens to dye with, because they grow so slowly, but when they would be destroyed anyway in fire, then I think it is ok to save them for dyeing.

December 4 Selection of blue Sininen lajitelma

Joulukuun neljännen päivän lankoina on kolme pikkuvyyhtiä vaalean sinisiä lankoja, täällä.

IN ENGLISH
December 4th yarns are three small skeins of light blue yarns, here.
Two bluer ones were dyed with natural indigo, but using henna for reduction of indigo, and slaked lime as alkaline.
So far only part of my indigo dyed yarns are dyed with using  fructose vat, but hopefully some day I'm able to control that vat so well, that I can dye more with it. I get only pale shades with it, possibly because I haven't put enough indigo  in the vat. When using fructose method the amount of indigo should be a lot bigger in the beginning than when using hydrosulphite vat, and if I want to dye more than  five skeins in the same vat at the same time, the amount of indigo should be at least 100g. If the vat works right it will give also after baths, but it hasn't always worked, and so I still practice fructose method with smaller vats:).

The third pale turqoise yarn was dyed some years ago with frozen japanese indigo leaves, and that is a very nice colour, something which is difficult to get from normal leaves of japanese indigo. More about dyeing with frost bitten leaves of japanese indigo, here.

IN ENGLISH
December 3rd yarn is also dyed with fresh japanese indigo leaves last summer. In my shop, here. Plants which I had in my polytunnel gave me deeper blues than the ones grown outside. Inside the polytunnel I could plant them earlier so they had longer growing season, and also it was warmer there. I was happy with blues I got from outside, too.
This yarn was dyed with japanese indigo leaves grown outside, and it is also dyed in an after bath, so that is why it is not so deep shade. It is dyed on natural light grey yarn. I like a lot these greyish colours, and they go well combined with natural light or medium grey yarns.

IN ENGLISH
December 2nd yarn is also blue, here in my shop. This colour is dyed with my own grown japanese indigo leaves last summer, the base yarn was natural white. This yarn goes well together with yesterdays darker blue, because in this yarn there is no turqoise shade like sometimes there is in yarns dyed with own japanese indigo or woad.

I am thinking that when extracting indigo from fresh leaves, if the temperature is higher, between 50-55C, at the time when alkali is added, that then the resulting colour is more redder blue, as opposite to turqoise blue. Also the amount of alkali may be important to this. Maybe then some of the precursors of indigo form indirubin instead of indigotin. Cardon : Natural Dyes says that indirubin formation is still not completely understood and that weak alkaline conditions and elevated temperatures favor it's formation. This has been also my experience. I would like to make more experiments about this some day!

December 1 Natural indigo

Näin tummaan väriin teen kyypin, missä on 15g indigojauhetta (ohje blogin sivupalkissa otsikon Indigo-alla), ja ensimmäiseen liemeen laitan seitsemän vyyhtiä lankaa, mitä dippaan tavallisesti kaksi kertaa.

IN ENGLISH
December 1st yarn is dark blue, here, a colour which I haven't had in the online shop for a while. This yarn is the colour of midnight deep blue, and it is dyed on natural light grey base yarn in natural indigo vat. I have seen many kinds of natural indigo powder, some give much paler shades than others, but the one I have is from El Salvador, and it is very good and strong indigo.
When I dye this dark blue, I use 15 grams of indigo powder for the vat. I usually dip yarn twice in it, first 15 minutes, and oxidize the same time, and the second dip is slightly shorter, usually ten minutes. The same vat gives medium and light blues in after baths.
When indigo has reduced well first in a smaller vat, before I add it to a bigger vat, and if I keep the temperature 50C or a bit below while dyeing, then I think also rub fastness is good. If the vat is hotter than 50C,  indigo may attach to the fiber too fast and only on the surface, so keeping an eye on the temperature while dyeing is very important.

December yarns Joulukuun langat

IN ENGLISH
I sell most of my natural dyed yarns at the market during summer. Many times my dye lots are small, especially those dyed with mushrooms or other local dye sources, and so there haven't been enough of them for the web shop.
Now I had an idea, that in December I will put every day from tomorrow until Christmas one colour a day also to my shop. A bit like Christmas calendar:). First there will be blues which there are not so much right now available in the online shop, but later also different yarns dyed with mushrooms, and dye lots which I have saved, mostly because they were so one-time dye lots dyed with plants or mushrooms which I don't have much. Most of the yarns will be Aarni, but there will also be some new Velho colours.
I will also post here in my blog the yarn of each day.

Colours from autumn apple tree leaves Värit syksyisistä omenapuunlehdistä

IN ENGLISH
In mid October leaves in our apple trees had turned orange and yellow, and after one windy night they had dropped. I have in previous autumns dyed successfully with fallen autumn leaves, and so I did also now. In the morning after they had dropped, I collected them for dyeing.
There is one wild apple tree growing in sunny and dry spot in the edge of the forest, and it's leaves had turned orange, while the leaves in an old cultivar 'Rautell' growing in more clay and moist soil were more yellow. I collected the leaves separately from each tree, and put them in net bags to soak in water with added washing soda.

Isosta 'Rautell'- puusta olisi lehtiä tullut paljon enemmänkin, mitä otin nyt värjäykseen. Pari jätesäkillistä lehtiä meni kompostiin tekeytymään hyväksi lehtimullaksi tuleville vuosille.

IN ENGLISH
Under the big 'Rautell' there were so much leaves, that I couldn't dye with all of them, and the rest went to compost where they will make very nice leaf mold to use in the garden in a year or two.

Keltaisemmista 'Rautell'in lehdistä tuli toinen vasemmalta oleva vaalean vihreä (värjätty luonnonbeigelle langalle, valkoiselle langalle niistä olisi tullut vaalean keltainen).

IN ENGLISH
I let the leaves soak for almost two weeks and during that time they had started to ferment. After that I simmered the leaves for about an hour, and let it cool down before I took the leaf bags away. I used about 600g of leaves to 100g of yarn. In my experience the long soaking time is necessary when dyeing with autumn leaves. If dyed right away, the colours are much paler.

I got the golden yellow in the middle from the wild apple tree leaves (grown in dry sunny place), and the after bath gave me the yarn on the far right. From yellow leaves from the tree which grows in more clay soil, I got light green, the second colour from the left. It is dyed on natural beige yarn, which helped it looking green, dyed on white yarn it would have been more yellow. All yarns were premordanted with alum and cream of tartar. It is said that in plants grown in sunny place, there are more dyes in them, and it looks like it also in these apple trees.
I left the baths to ferment more for another ten days, and then dyed again with the same baths. Now I got the second colour from the right from wild apple tree. From 'Rautell' bath I got green on the far left. It is dyed on light grey yarn which is why it looks green, if dyed on white yarn the same bath would have given a yellow colour. I also used only half the amount of yarn, because the first bath didn't give so strong colour, and now it was ok.

IN ENGLISH
I find dyeing with autumn leaves so easy, or actually collecting them is so much easier than when the leaves are still in trees. Only thing is that they need to be collected right away before rain soaks all the dyes from them in the ground. In the books it is often said that tree leaves give good colour only in early summer, but I have gotten good colour from them also in the autumn. It only takes more time:).

Colours from autumn mushrooms Syksyn sienivärejä

Alkusyksy oli juuri sopivan sateinen sieniä ajatellen, vaikka kesä olikin kuiva.
Olen värjännyt samettijaloilla aika paljon varastoon tarvikepaketteja varten ja jotain samettijalkavihreitä riittää myyntiinkin.
Näitä lankoja on nyt myynnissä nettikaupassani.

IN ENGLISH
September and October have been rainy, which was good after a dry summer.
I have dyed a lot with Tapinella atrotomentosa olive green for the mitten kits, and also some yarns to sell.
I have now these mushroom dyed yarns in my online shop.

IN ENGLISH
I got one huge Dyer's Polypore, Phaeolus schweinitzii, from a friend. The weight of that one fungi was over 2 kilos. It is not a common polypore here, and that is why I'm so happy that this one place produces one or two polypores every year:). It was picked in September and was already a bit old, as you can see from the picture, but I still got yellows from it, and also green dyed on top of blue from my own japanese indigo.

IN ENGLISH
I have also got quite nice amount of Cortinarius semisanguineus- mushrooms.
I have dyed with them mostly fresh, but also dried some of them for later use. Brown yarns were dyed on natural grey base yarn. I use quite a lot of mushrooms (usually one kilo of fresh mushrooms to 100g of yarn), so that I get strong colours. After bath gives more orange colours.

In the picture above there are Cortinarius purpureus on the left and Cortinarius semisanguineus on the right. It has been several years since I got C.purpureus, autumns have been too dry for it, but now I  was happy to get some (only what is in the picture) and dried them for later use. They are not easy to tell apart from C.semisanguineus, but they are sturdier mushrooms on the whole, both caps and stems. While C.semisanguineus has red velum only in the base of the stem, C.purpureus stems are more reddish all the way (though it doesn's show well in the picture). Sometimes their stems may look all red.
As I understand there are no yellow colorants in C.purpureus like there are in C.semisanguineus, which make the afterbaths  of C.semisanguineus more orange yellow, and the after baths of C.purpureus give more pale reddish colour in my experience.
I found a Finnish study by Outi Temmes about dyeing with C.purpureus and comparing it to C.semisanguineus. Only the abstract is in English, and the whole of it in Finnish, but there are good pictures of the colours she got. She had also dyed separately with hats and stems as well as with whole mushrooms, and it was interesting to see that C.purpureus still gave yellow from the stems (with even slightly better fastness than from the whole mushroom).

One morning last week the wind had dropped all the leaves from apple trees, and I collected some right away for dyeing. If they get soaked in rain for days in ground, I think most of the dyes in them are gone, but when they are collected the same day, they are ok. I get as good yellows from autumn leaves as from summer leaves, but they need to be soaked in slightly alkaline water for two weeks for the dyes to come out. I have tried to extract and dye with them the same day when they were collected, but always I have gotten better results with a long soak with autumn leaves. I put the leaves in a net bag in a big bucket of water, with couple of table spoonfuls of washing soda, and leave outside. The net bags are easy to transfer to the pot to simmer, with soaking water.
Here I have written earlier about autumn leaves.
With these leaves I'm going to dye near the end of the month.

I dyed first time this year with woad in the beginning of August, and last week I cut the second row of plants for dyeing. In the picture below the front row is the one I had already cut three weeks ago and the middle row was cut now. The front row had grown new leaves quite nicely, and I will get a new crop later in September from my woad plants. I used 800g of leaves / 100g of yarn which gave me two times the blue in the picture and third time very pale blue. Woad gave me just the right blue for Bellflowers mitten kits.
Woad has liked this summer and they have grown well.

I also dyed couple of weeks ago with japanese indigo which grew in my polytunnel, and also they will give me a second crop later in the autumn (I left some plants uncut, so that they would grow flowers and from which I could get hopefully seeds). Japanese indigo grew this year much better inside polytunnel than outside. From five seedlings I got totally 2 kg of stripped leaves, which dyed two times 6 skeins and 4 paler blue in the third bath, totally 16 skeins of blue. The darker blues are dyed on natural grey yarn, which makes the colour darker and a bit greyish.

Japanese indigo which I planted outside in spring did not do so well this summer, but finally now in August it has started to grow better. It was so dry and hot in June, and I should have watered them more, and then most of July was also dry, and yet cloudy. Only in the end of July was a hot sunny period and in August it has rained sufficiently, though I still had to water them couple of times.
Last week we got good amount of rain with thunder storms.
I'm thinking I will start to harvest and dye with these plants next week:).
