December 19 Hydnellum aurantiacum Oranssiorakasväri
Tänään värinä on edelleen orakkailla värjätty.

Today I have another yarn dyed with tooth fungi.
This yarn is a nice green, and dyed with Hydnellum aurantiacum 12 years ago, pictures of them that year. I have never after that gotten the exact same colour, and I have even begun to think if I had identified the mushrooms right. I had 2 kg of fresh mushrooms, which I had cut to small pieces and put in a glass jar with ammonia to soak for two months. Jar wasn't quite tight, because pH had dropped to six by the end of two months, and the liquid with mushroom mush was brownish yellow. I then boiled the bath for two hours with some ammonia added to it, so that ph was 8-9. After boiling I strained the bath, added some cold water, pH was 7.
With this bath I dyed one white skein (premordanted with alum and cream of tartar), and got this nice a bit blueish green. In reality it is a bit uneven colour, that doesn't show in the picture. From the same bath I got another skein of more greyish light green.

Kaksi tummempaa lankaa on värjätty männynsuomuorakkailla.

Today I have a selection of yarns dyed also with tooth fungi: Sarcodon squamosus and Hydnellum suaveolens, in my shop here.
These colours are difficult to describe, they are not blue, but not really green either, but something in between, and also even though they are dyed on white yarn, they are a bit greyish colours. Very pretty in their own way even if not bright colours.
The two darker colours are dyed with Sarcodon squamosus. The mushrooms were old partly rotted mushrooms, and I used 10kg of fresh mushrooms to 100g of yarn. When boiling the mushrooms the pH was raised with ammonia, but when dyeing the pH was 7-8, just a bit above neutral.
The bottom colour was dyed with Hydnellum suaveolens mushroom, with young mushrooms and so the colour became lighter.
In my experience an important thing with dyeing with tooth fungi is that the mushrooms need to be old. I have never gotten good dark colour from young mushrooms. Another thing is that you need to have really a lot of mushrooms in relation to yarn. One or two mushrooms is no use, you need to have a bucketful. When extracting the colour from the tooth fungi, the pH needs to be high, and I have also noticed that the mushrooms need to strained right away after boiling (unless you use the bath with yarn and mushrooms together in the same bath). It seems that if you leave the bath to cool down with mushrooms in it, some of the dye is absorbed back to the mushrooms from the bath.
Lightfastness in colours from tooth fungi is medium, not as good as in many historical natural dyes, so I wouldn't use these yarns to anything which requires good lightfastness for many years, or which is kept in sunshine.

December 17th yarn is variegated turqoise, dyed with tooth fungi Hydnellum suaveolens.
I had used dried mushrooms 200g/100g yarn. I soaked the dry mushrooms over night, boiled for two hours, and added ammonia in the beginning so that ph was raised to 9. During boiling pH dropped so that I had to add a glug more after the first hour of boiling.
When the dyeing started pH was 7-8, slightly alkaline. I didn't strain the bath, so the mushrooms were still in the bath with yarn when dyeing, so the colour became quite variegated. The yarns were pre mordanted with alum (20%) and cream of tartar (5%).
Colours dyed with tooth fungi are not as lightfast as indigodyed blues and greens, so I don't recommend knitting hats from this yarn. Hats get always so much sun, obviously. This yarn is better for mittens or maybe as a pattern color in a sweater.

Results of lightfastness test from last summer Orakaslankojen valonkestotestin tuloksia viime kesältä

Last summer I put some yarns dyed with tooth fungi to light fastness test outside in our porch, where they were from mid July to the end of August, left half of them covered. July was sunny but in August it was more cloudy and rainy. Yarns got direct sunlight in the afternoons (that is when it actually was sunny).
Blues from tooth fungi had faded quite a lot, and brown shades where left in them. The top blue was dyed with woad and it was there for comparison, it had kept it's colour.

The importance of testing Valonkestotestejä
Ensi viikolla on 20-23.7 taas Värjärikillan järjestämät värjäripäivät, tänä vuonna Lepaalla.

Next week Finnish Dyer's Guild has it's annual gathering (though I'm not able to make it there).
They have different workshops, and one of them is a workshop about plant mordants, by Outi Sipilä who has a long experience with natural dyes. She had written an interesting article in guilds magazine about plant mordants and how important it is that when people experiment with new plant mordants and plant combinations, that they would test them for light fastness and also report back what the results are. It is a shame that many times initially wonderful colours fade more or less rapidly to something dull, and this may discourage people new to dyeing or people who buy naturally dyed yarns. On the other hand some new good results may just be waiting to be found!
She wrote how she had dyed 34 years ago with mushrooms and kept samples of these yarns in a dark place in an envelope all these years. Now, when she looked at them, she found that blue which was dyed with mushroom Telephora palmata (tin mordant) had completely faded to white, even in dark. In the same conditions reds from Cortinarius semisanguineus had kept their colour.
This reminded me how also I had forgotten my samples, and need to do more lightfastness tests! I dug up samples and yarns which I had dyed with tooth fungi and Telephora palmata over the last 20 years. I hadn't kept samples from all the dyeings (or I didn't find them), but I found most of them. As I understand the dyes in tooth fungi are the same type as the dyes in Telephora, and I now I decided to do a longer test for these for the rest of the summer. I have also samples of yarns dyed with tooth fungi and mordanted with only rhubarb leaf, and it will be interesting to see how they compare with alum mordanted yarns.
Here are pictures of the yarns and samples I found.
Sarcodon squamosus, männynsuomuorakas
Hydnellum suaveolens, tuoksuorakas
Nämä kaikki näytteet on säilytetty pimeässä.

Above and below are samples dyed with Telephora palmata. Most of them seem now to be greyish, but I remember them being more blueish grey initially, so they have lost at least some of their color. Beige on the right is strange, how could I have gotten that color from Telephora.. I can't understand. The pale color on the left has been dyed in 2012, and I have written in my notebook that it was pale turqoise, so that has lost also it's color. So it seems that Telephora palmata is not a good dye fungi, it's blue is lost in time. I have kept these samples in the dark.

I made now this kind of test for the yarns, I will cover half of them and leave half in the sunlight in our porch for the rest of the summer. To compare with, there is also a sample dyed with woad, I'm sure it will keep it's color. I suspect the tooth fungi yarns will turn green and lose the blue in them, but how much will they fade, that remains to be seen.
Thank you Outi for reminding about the importance of these tests. I hope you get interesting results in the workshop and also what colors/mordants are the winners in the long run:)

Lopuksi kuvia tällä viikolla yhdeltä aamulenkiltäni. Lähellä kasvaa hieno niitty täynnä päivänkakkaraa, ei kovin yleistä täällä.
Here are some pictures from my morning walk this week. Close by is a pretty field full of Oxeye daisies, not so common sight any more.
Tienpenkalla kasvaa ahomataraa.
Galium boreale by the side of the road.
It is easy to recognize from having only four leaves in a whorl around the stem.
These are either Galium verum or Galium x pomeranicum which is more common and for me they are difficult to tell apart.
Puutarhassa kukkivat pionit, kurjenmiekat ja kurjenpolvet.
In the garden now it is time for peonies, irises and cranesbills.

Sarcodon squamosus this autumn Männynsuomuorakasvärjäys tänä syksynä
IN ENGLISH
Last week I did some experimenting with mushroom Sarcodon squamosus. They grew abundantly in the forest where my sister walks her dogs, and she collected a lot of them for me. At this time the mushrooms were old enough to have also blue dyestuffs in them, the blue develops in old mushrooms, I have never gotten blue or even green with young or light brown S.squamosus.
IN ENGLISH
Tooth fungi are really mystery mushrooms, because at best they can give greens and blues to wool. The amount of blue in them is small and you need a lot of fresh mushrooms. Getting blue from them is not easy and easily repeated. Here I have written previously about my experiments with this mushroom. Also these are experiments and an attempt to learn more about dyeing with this mushroom, and I hope these experiments also help other dyers. I am not so sure about the lightfastness of colors from Sarcodon squamosus, so I don't sell these yarns, not at least until I have tested them for light in the spring when the sun shines more.
IN ENGLISH
I used fresh but very old and rotten, some also frozen mushrooms Sarcodon squamosus 10kg/100grams of yarn, that is mushroom weight 100 times per weight of the yarn, lucky they are big and heavy mushrooms. I crushed the mushrooms and covered with water and boiled them vigorously for 2-3 hours. In the beginning when they started to boil I added either ammonia or washing soda to raise the pH of the bath to 9. In experiments where I used ammonia, it evaporated during the boiling so that in the end the pH was near neutral, but with washing soda the pH stayed high for the whole time.
When boiling the mushrooms you have to watch the bath carefully, because a lot of foam develops and it boils over easily. In the beginning the foam is brown but after adding the base to the bath, the foam changes to brownish blue.
After boiling the mushroom enough I strained part of the bath (so that I got room for the yarns), but left at least half of the mushrooms in the bath. I have understood that if the mushrooms and yarns are together in the bath, it is possible to get better blues, and I wanted to try this way now. Before adding the yarns to the bath I made sure that pH was close to 7, not under 7, but not over 8 either, because I have ruined so many yarns by combination of high pH and hot temperature, so I'm careful with it now. If the pH was too high I added small amount of vinegar to lower the pH. I know that many mushroom dyers say that to get the best blues the pH must be high when the yarns are in the bath, but I have managed to get reasonably good colors also in neutral bath, if the pH was high when extracting the color from the mushrooms by boiling them, and this method works better for me. It may be that superwash treated commercial yarns can handle high pH and hot temperatures without getting damaged, but my yarn can't. The scales of the wool stay open and the wool felts.
When the yarns were in the bath, I raised the temperature to 80-90°C (almost boiling), and kept it there for one hour. At first the yarns looked beige, then brown and when the temperature was high you could see blue shades mixed with brown, later the brown washed out and blue came out better. The blue dyes from these mushrooms don't attach to the yarn in lower temperatures. During dyeing, and especially in the beginning of dyeing, I moved the yarns around in the bath and couple of times raised them to air to get oxygen (only for couple of seconds).
All yarns were mordanted with alum (10%) and cream of tartar (4%), and all samples were from the same mordant lot. All base yarns were white.
The samples below are following:
1a. ammonia for raising pH during boiling, only about one thirds of the mushrooms with yarns in the dyebath
1b. afterbath of 1a
2. ammonia for raising the pH during boiling, after 45 min of dyeing 2grams of iron to the bath, dyeing continued for 15 minutes
3a. washing soda for raising the pH during boiling, more mushrooms with the yarns
3b. afterbath of 3a
3c. second after bath of 3a
4a. washing soda for raising the pH during boiling, unmordanted yarn, mushrooms didn't boil as vigorously as in the other experiments (the pot was too full and was going to boil over)
4b. same bath as 4a, rhubarb leaf mordanted yarn (400% rhubarb leaves)
4c. same bath as 4a, alum + CoT mordanted yarn
4d. afterbath of 4a
4e. second afterbath of 4a
5. bath from dried Sarcodon squamosus from last year, 800grams of dry mushrooms per 100g yarn, mushrooms soaked first overnight, then boiled for 4 hours, ammonia for raising the pH during boiling the mushrooms. This bath wasn't as dark in color as the baths from fresh mushrooms.
Lisäksi no 4 langoista tuli eniten epätasaisia, muissa väri on melko tasainen.

THOUGTS
I was most surprised to find that this year I got the best blue when I had used washing soda and not ammonia to raise the pH during boiling the mushrooms. Up until now I had been sure that ammonia gave the best colors but it isn't so, and my previous results had some other thing which affected that ammonia had given me the best blues. I don't know what that is. Also I would have thought that I now had used equally old mushrooms and equal amount of them (except no5), but still I got different color in each experiment. It is possible that the mushrooms were not equally old though they looked like it. I can't say why I couldn't get the same color though I was trying to do the dyeing the same way each time (except the variation in ammonia/washing soda).
In the experiment no 4 the lesser amount of blue was most likely due to me not boiling the mushrooms as vigorously as the other experiments. Also in no 4 the yarns turned out more uneven than others. Rhubarb leaf mordant worked also with Sarcodon squamosus, like it had worked with my Hydnellum suaveolens experiments resulting more green color because of the yellow base from rhubarb leaf.
The last experiment, no 5, didn't give as good color as the experiments with rotten fresh mushrooms, and I think this is because the dried mushrooms were not old enough. It is difficult to dry rotten mushrooms.
Based on this years experience I would think that if I want blue from Sarcodon squamosus the following are important things:
- mushrooms must be very old
- boil them for a long time, hours, vigorously
- when mushrooms start to boil, add either ammonia or washing soda, both work, to raise the pH to 9
- yarns must be premordanted with alum, but also rhubarb leaf mordanting works giving greener colors. Without any mordant the resulting color is brown (which you also get if you put the mordants to the actual dyebath).
- these mushrooms don't work in low temperature, the dye bath must be over 80°C

Follow-up to Hydnellum solar dyeing Tuloksia aurinkovärjäyksestä tuoksuorakkaalla
Alla olevassa kuvassa on miltä purkki näytti toisen päivän aamuna.

In the beginning of July we got warm and sunny weather and I set up solar dyeing jars in the greenhouse, also some experiment jars like the one with mushroom Hydnellum suaveolens. Here is what all looked in the beginning. I had 50grams of dried fungi and 24 grams of yarn mordanted with alum and cream of tartar. There were also control pieces of unmordanted yarn and yarn mordanted with rhubarb leaf (400% rhubarb). I poured alkaline water, pH 11 made alkaline with washing soda, over the mushrooms and wet yarn, and very soon the liquid looked dark brown.
In the picture below is how it looked in the morning of day 2.

In the night of day 2 I noticed that the contents had started to ferment and there was a lot of foam. I opened the lid a little, because I was afraid the pressure would get too big otherwise. Fermenting had lowered the pH but it was still alkaline, also the color of the liquid was not lighter brown. The sun heated the jars very nicely, during the daytime the temperature inside the jars was about 40°C and at nights about 20°C.
Lisäsin hiukan kidesoodaa jotta pH nousi taas 8:aan.

In day 4 it looked like this, the pH had dropped to 7, and the liquid had gotten more pale, fermenting had slowed down. I added some more washing soda to raise the pH to 8.
Yhdeksäs päivä
Day 9
IN ENGLISH
On Day 9 I took the yarn from the jar and in the picture below is what it looked like right after I took it out: boring greyish color.
IN ENGLISH
I let the yarn oxydize on the line for two hours, and first the color changed to light greyish lilac, and then after a while it became pale spotty blueish green in parts where it got most light. I washed the yarn, and it didn't change color during washing, but after when it was drying on the line in the shade of an apple tree, it turned to more greenish. The piece of yarn which had no mordant became pale pinkish and the one with rhubarb leaf mordant became slightly darker but there was no significant difference to the rhubarb leaf color.
In the picture below there is for comparison the turqoise yarn which I had gotten from the same mushrooms with hot dyeing and ammonia (not washing soda). So this mushroom is not so good for solar dyeing, and it gives better colors in hot, but nevertheless it was interesting, I have never gotten pale pink for unmordanted wool from these mushrooms, and also the color changes when it was on the line were something to think about. Also I am now wondering if I should have taken the yarn our from the jar already on day 3 or 4. Or use ammonia instead of washing soda. Perhaps I should set up another experiment when it becomes sunny again later this week..

Rhubarb leaf and tooth fungi Raparperinlehti ja orakkaat
No 2 kuvassa eli vaaleamman keltainen.
Raparperinlehtien sisältämä oksaalihappo on myrkyllistä. Lehdet pitää keittää ulkona eikä kattilasta tulevia höyryjä ole hyvä hengittää. Käytä kumikäsineitä kun käsittelet raparperinlehtiliemiä!

If you want to try pre-treating yarns with rhubarb leaves before dyeing with other plants, there is still time to harvest rhubarb leaves before they start to flower. I suspect, that they are better before flowering, but don't know for sure.
Last summer I harvested rhubarb leaves June 15th, but then summer was later than now. I harvested the leaves without stems, put them in net bag (without bag, the leaves become easily goop which is very difficult to strain or get from the yarns). I soaked the leaves over night, this may not be necessary, but I'm mentioning exactly what I did. The next day I boiled the leaves for one hour, let them cool down, took the bag of leaves away from the bath and added yarns. I used 450g fresh leaves to 100g of yarn, so that is little over four times as much leaves as yarn.
I raise the temperature to simmer, kept it there for one hour and let cool overnight. The yarn became No 1 in the samples.
Because the bath still looked good, I added another batch of yarns (same amount as in the first bath), dyed as previously and let cool for two days (it just happened that way). This yarn is No 2 in the picture, paler yellow.
I saved these yarns for later experiments, kept them dry and before experiments wet and rinsed them properly.
Rhubarb leaves contain at least oxalic acid, which can be helpful when dyeing with some natural dyes. I have also heard that they might contain iron, but I don't know what exactly they contain. Oxalic acid in rhubarb leaves is poisonous. Work with them outside, and don't breathe the vapors from the pot. Use rubber gloves when you handle rhubarb leaf baths!
No 1 = raparperipuretettu lanka
No 2 = raparperipurettu lanka, ollut rapaperijälkiliemessä
Värjäys tuoksuorakasliemessä, seuraavat näytteet olivat keskenään samassa väriliemessä
No 3 = purettamaton lanka + tuoksuorakas
No 4 = raparperipuretettu lanka no 1 + tuoksuorakas
No 5 = raparperipuretettu lanka no 2 + tuoksuorakas
Värjäys tuoksuorakasliemessä, seuraavat näytteet olivat keskenään samassa liemessä, värjätty eri kerralla kuin edelliset
No 6 = raparperipuretettu lanka no 1 + tuoksuorakas, valitettavasti vain hyvin pieni näytepätkä
No 7 = aluna/viinikivipuretettu lanka + tuoksuorakas
Yllätyksekseni raparperipuretettu lanka no 1 eli vahvimmassa ensimmäisessä raparperiliemessä ollut lanka kiinnitti itseensä tuoksuorakkaan sinisiä väriaineita. Aluna/viinikivipuretettu lanka on hyvä sininen/turkoosi, mitä odotinkin.
IN ENGLISH
Last winter I did some experiments with tooth fungi, they are still not finished and more about them later, but something interesting came up, and because now is the time to harvest rhubarb leaves, here is shortly about it.
In the picture above there are samples dyed with Hydnellum suaveolens, but I suspect the same results may apply to all tooth fungi when it comes with rhubarb leaves.
I used 200grams of dried H.suaveolens/ 100grams of yarn, soaked them, boiled with raised pH 9. When dyeing the pH was 8 and the fungi were in the same bath with the yarns.
First the yarns which I told above, dyed only with rhubarb leaves, so you can see the color before they went to the tooth fungi bath.
No 1 = rhubarb leaf mordanted yarn, first bath
No 2 = rhubarb leaf mordanted yarn, after bath
These yarns were all together in the same Hydnellum suaveolens bath
No 3 = unmordanted sample
No 4 = rhubarb leaf mordanted yarn no 1 + H.suaveolens
No 5 = rhubarb leaf mordanted yarn no 2 + H.suaveolens
These next yarns were in different bath as the previous ones, but dyed with Hydnellum suaveolens
No 6 = rhubarb leaf mordantd yarn no 1 + H.suaveolens, a small sample, but very nice green
No 7 = yarn mordanted with alum + Cream of Tartar
I was very surprised to find out that rhubarb leaf mordanted yarn attached the blue dyes from H.hydnellum suaveolens. The color obviously looks green, because of the yellow base of the rhubarb leaf mordanted yarn, but especially No 6 is a very nice green. Previously I have been a little sceptical about how good rhubarb leaf is for mordanting: using it and not alum with many other natural dyes, I have gotten mostly the same colors as I get with unmordanted yarn, plus the yellow shade the rhubarb gives, but with these tooth fungi rhubarb leaf mordanting did help the blue dyes from tooth fungi to attach to the fiber!
No 7 mordanted traditionally with alum looks blue/turqoise like I expected it to.
You can see from the comparison how the unmordanted yarn took only the brown dyes, and the same happened with rhubarb mordanted yarn No 2 (the sample no 5), I guess whatever the acting chemicals in the rhubarb leaf solution are, they attached in the first bath and there were not enough of them left for in the after bath (even though the color from the after bath was yellow) for the blue dyes to react with. I wish someone would do a study about what chemicals there are in rhubarb leaf bath before and after dyeing.
In preliminary light fastness tests the green from rhubarb leaf and H.suaveolens was about the same fastness as the blue gotten with alum and H.suaveolens. They are not as fast in strong sunlight as blues or greens from indigo-bearing plants (which are superior), but these are reasonable fast.
So now would be a good time to prepare yarn with rhubarb leaves to wait for the mushrooms in the autumn.

Dyeing with a mix of tooth fungi Värjäystä orakassekoituksella
Kuivattuja sieniä on onneksi aika paljon odottamassa uusia värjäyksiä:)

More vague blues, this time from mushrooms.
I had small amounts of different fresh and old tooth fungi. Not much of any one species, so I put all of them together in the same bath: couple of big Hydnellum suaveolens, two Phellodon niger, about one kilo of Hydnellum aurantiacum and a small bag of Telephora palmata - mushrooms, which all contain same kind of dye pigments.
When the concoction started to boil, I added a dash of ammonia to raise the pH to 9. I boiled the mushrooms for an hour. I had planned to add the yarn to the bath together with the mushrooms, but the bath looked so bad, that I thought that I would never get the pieces of rotten mushrooms out of the yarn if I put them together in the same bath, so I strained the bath before adding the yarn. The Swedish mushroom dyers dye with mushrooms and yarn together, and they get darker blues that way. I will have to try it with a very small amount of yarn some time! After straining I added more water to the bath, so that it cooled down a little, and also the pH dropped to about 8. I dyed 100g of yarn mordanted with alum and cream of tartar, for one hour, and got quite dark greenish blue. However, when I washed the yarn, a lot of dye washed out ( I am positive based on my earlier experience - which is different than that of many other dyers, for some unknown reason -, that had I lowered the pH to neutral when dyeing, the color would not have washed out so much, but I wanted to try it with high pH this time.. it works for others, so why does it not work for me.. but it doesn't.. perhaps it has to do with our water, or with some other unknown factor) and the result was pale, slightly uneven greenish blue yarn. This is a color which looks more green in sunlight and more blue in shade, it is difficult to say what the actual shade is. The afterbath gave very pale beige the next day, even raising the pH again to 9 didn't help.
These were the last of the fresh mushrooms, but I still have dried mushrooms to experiment with:)

Preparing tooth fungi for dye Tuoksuorakkaita värjäykseen
IN ENGLISH
Here are some Hydnellum suaveolens tooth fungi from last week, total of little over 2 kg of them. These are pretty old and big specimen. I have written here how to identify them and how I had dyed with them then.
IN ENGLISH
These are really pretty mushrooms inside, blue stripes on white and brown background.
I ripped the mushrooms to slices, it is easier that trying to crush them, because the flesh is so tough. I put the slices in a big glass jar, and poured warm water and ammonia over them, the pH was about 11. I'm planning to keep them like this for about four weeks, and hopefully get blue or bluish green from these mushrooms.
Tänään liemi purkissa näytti tältä, pohjalla ruskeampaa ja pinnalla mustaa. pH oli pinnalla 9 eli hiukan pudonnut. Tätä täytyy nyt tarkkailla, ehkä minun pitää värjätä niillä jo aiemmin.

Today the jar looked like this, the liquid was browner in the bottom and almost black near the top of the jar. pH had dropped to 9. I have to keep an eye on this jar, perhaps I have to dye with them earlier than I thought.

Follow-up to Sarcodon squamosus Jatkoa suomuorakasvärjäyksiin
Tästä sienten vanhettamisesta puhutaan myös jo Miriam Ricen kirjassa Mushrooms for Color, 1980. Liian nuorina kerätyille ei auta ämpärivanhettaminenkaan, vaan sienten pitää saada vanhettua ensiksi maassa.
IN ENGLISH
Posts about dyeing with Sarcodon squamosus are the most popular in my blog, so it clearly interests many, especially Finns, even though you need really a lot of mushrooms and it is not easy to get the blue from them. So here is more about dyeing with them. Last November I got quite a lot of old Sarcodon squamosus mushrooms, and I did experiments with them then, about it here. I had one bucketful of mushrooms left, and I kept it covered outside over the winter. It froze and now in the spring when it melted, the content was smelly brown mush. You couldn't tell what mushrooms they had been or even if it was mushrooms in the first place. In the autumn there had been about 5 kilos of mushrooms, I don't know the weight now.
I poured the contents of the bucket to kettle and boiled for two hours. I didn't add anything to them, and pH was 6. There was a lot of froth, first it was reddish brown and then it started to change to brownish blue. After boiling I strained the bath, let it cool down a little and then added 50grams of white alum-cream of tartar- mordanted yarn to it. I didn't add more water to the bath. The yarn changed to brown first and then slowly to greyish blue. I dyed it in 80°C (simmer) for one hour and then let it cool down in the bath for another hour. The result is the slightly uneven greenish blue, the upper yarn in the picture. I think it is quite good for a mushroom color.
The next day I dyed another 50grams in the afterbath, and got light blueish green, the bottom yarn in the picture.
If I had had more mushrooms, I would have also made a bath with added ammonia when boiling the mushrooms, and that would possibly have given even more blue color, but I'm happy for this, and that leaves more experiments for next year, that is if we get a good autumn for mushrooms this year:)
So my own opinion is that you need to have a lot of Sarcodon squamosus, and you need to pick them when they are old enough, and even then, with ageing, you can have blue without ammonia. Miriam Rice's older book Mushrooms for Color (1980) talks also to age these mushrooms for blues.

Emäksenä on suurimmassa osassa kirjoista käytetty ammoniakkia, vain Rice suosittelee kidesoodaa ammoniakin sijasta pH:n nostoon, koska ammoniakki on hengitettynä haitallisempaa.

Sarcodon squamosus is a mysterious mushroom, if you want to get blue colors from it. First of all you have to have the right species, Sarcodon squamosus, which grows near pines. There is a very similar species Sarcodon imbricatus, which grows near spruces, and that mushroom is no good for a dyer, there are no dyestuffs in it at all, so you have to make sure you pick mushrooms only near pines to get the right species. Of course sometimes you can dye with the right species and still get no color, the dyemolecules are not ready in the mushroom when it emerges from the ground, they are formed in the mushroom when it gets older, and then the dyeing technique must be right. There is not much information about what the right dye technique is, and not either about the actual dyestuff in these mushrooms. One of the pigments in these mushrooms is telephoric acid, which belongs to terphenylquinones and which according to Eric Sundström in Miriam Rices book Mushrooms for color can be modified from brown telephoric acid to bright blue by aging or in high pH. Lundmarks book Färgsvampar och svampfärgning says that reaction may be oxidation when telephoric acid changes to blue dehydrogyrocyan. Bessette (Rainbow beneath my Feet, A Mushroom Dyer's Field Guide) tells to add ammonia to the mushrooms when they have boiled for ten minutes and then continue to boil them to extract color. I have done this with good results with other tooth fungi, and gotten better colors than raising the pH later in the actual dye bath. However, I don't know what happens chemically, so I can't say why this way is better, or even if it is better.
For raising pH, most books say to use ammonia, only Rice recommends washing soda, because ammonia is more harmful to the dyer when inhaled. Couple of months ago I got to read Sari Hiltunen's masters graduate thesis from Helsinki University about dyeing with Sarcodon squamosus, the color and it's light fastness (2005). Unfortunately this thesis is not available in electronic version, only in Finnish in the Helsinki University library Minerva in Helsinki. Anyway, from this thesis I found that the writer suspects that the blue pigments form complex with ammonium ions in ammonia but are not able to form complex with sodium in lye (sodium hydroxide). Perhaps this is the reason why I haven't always gotten good color with other tooth fungi, when I used washing soda to raise the pH?
NÄYTE NO 3.

In the first picture of this posting there are young Sarcodon squamosus mushrooms, picture taken in the beginning of October. These mushrooms are too young to give blue colors, I think. In the bucket above there are old mushrooms which in my experience are now good for also blues.
In the beginning of November I got four buckets of old fresh mushrooms from my friend. They were picked from around pines where there was not spruce to be seen, so they were the right species. It is difficult to examine the length of the spines of other small details from the mushrooms this old, so the place where they grew was a better indicator to the right species.
With these mushrooms I did several experiments during the last couple of weeks. The results are not exactly comparable, because some mushrooms had time to age in the bucket, but here are the results anyway. Also the time the mushrooms boiled or cooled were not exactly the same and also the weight of the fiber was not exactly the same, I did these experiments among other work:) There are lots of questions still in my mind:)
The numbers in the yarn picture below refer to the experiment number. All the yarn used was mordanted with alum (12% and cream of tartar (4%), except for number 6, the mordanting was done in the end of August and the yarns cured since then.
1. 2 kg of mushrooms, crushed, boiled for 1 hour. Added washing soda, pH 11, simmered (not boiling) yet 45 minutes. Strained, pH 9-10. Added 20grams of yarn and a piece of unmordanted yarn. Dyed 45 min 80°C, the color turned almost immediately light turquoise, and didn't get darker later. The yarn had been damaged a little by hot alkaline bath.
2. 2kg of mushrooms, crushed, boiled for 1 hour, added ammonia, pH 9, and boiled yet 30 min. Strained, pH 8,5, cooled 1 hour. 20g mordanted yarn and a small piece of unmordanted, The mordanted yarns was right from the start darker and more blueish color. Dyed 80°C 1 hour. Experiment 1 and 2 were done in consecutive days, and the only big difference was washing soda versus ammonia, so that was why I used ammonia in later experiments, it seemed to work better.
3. 2kg of mushrooms, crushed, boiled for 2 hours. Strained. pH neutral. I added 100g of mordanted yarns to the hot bath, and let it cool overnight in the bath. I was hoping the other except blue pigments to attach first to this yarn. However, the next morning the yarn was very light beige, not even brown. SAMPLE NO 9.
When I poured the bath from the bucket back to the kettle, the walls of the bucket were colored greyish blue! Picture below. I scrubbed the blue pigment back to the bath, added ammonia, pH 9, warmed the bath and added 24g yarn. Dyed 1 hour 80°C. SAMPLE NO 3.

4. 6 kg mushrooms, crushed. When the mushrooms started to boil I added first a cupful of fermented urine (pH9), but it didn't raise the pH of the bath enough, so I then added some ammonia until pH was 9. Boiled for 2 hours. Strained, pH 8,5. 55g yarn, dyed for one hour. The bath boiled for a while (accidentally). What a strong color, really blue!!
Next day I put in the after bath 50g, pH 8, and dyed. The color changed quite slowly to turquoise, and it is also slightly uneven.
5. 2 kg mushrooms, crushed. I wanted to try again washing soda for raising the pH, so after the mushrooms boiled for one hour, I added washing soda, pH 9, and boiled another hour. Strained. 23g yarn, dyeing 1 hour 90°C. This is darker color than experiment 1, but still turquoise rather than blue. By this time the mushrooms had been in the bucket for one hour and aged more.
6. 2 kg mushrooms, crushed. Boiled 1,5 hours, then added ammonia, pH 9. Boiled another 1,5 hours. Strained, pH 8,5. 20g of unmordanted wool, it turned brownish soon. After dyeing for one hour added 1g of iron, and continued dyeing for 20 minutes, 90°C.
7. 2kg mushrooms, crushed. Boiled 1,5 hours, added ammonia, pH 9, boiled another 1,5 hours. The bath cooled down before I strained it. 24g yarn, dyeing 1 hour, 90-100°C, pH 8,5. I tried to get the same color as no 4, but didn't. Now I think there were less mushrooms/ yarn and I should have added ammonia in the beginning. Also that the bath cooled before straining could have an effect.
8. 2 kg mushrooms, crushed. Boiled for 3 hours, added ammonia pH 8,5 (I ran our of ammonia), and boiled for an hour more. Cooled 30 minutes and strained. I added more water so that it got diluted and the pH was 7,5. 20g yarn, it became first brown, then started to turn grey and finally blue. Dye time 1 hour, 90°C, and I then let the yarn cool in the bath for 1,5 hours.
Because my yarn doesn't like being in hot alkaline bath, I wanted to try if raising the pH only for the extraction time, and then dyeing in almost neutral bath works, and it seems it does.
10. 100g dried young mushrooms, soaked first for two days in alkaline bath, pH 10 with washing soda. Boiled for one hour. Strained, 20g yarn, pH 8, dyeing one hour 80°C. No sign of blue or green colors in this yarn and I suspect that it is because the mushrooms were too young. Also I didn't use ammonia, but even with washing soda I got later turquoise colors from old mushrooms. I dyed this experiment earlier before I had gotten the fresh old mushrooms.
11. This sample is six years old, dyed in neutral bath with six months old aged rotten mushrooms, I have written about it and my earlier experiences here.

In the picture below there are unmordanted samples from bath 1 and 2, the bottom yarn is from No1 and the other one is from no 2. Interesting how the yarns in washing soda bath got more color than the one in the ammonia bath, just the opposite to what happened to mordanted yarns.

And another interesting observation. The cotton yarn I used to hold the skeins (so that they wouldn't get messed up in the bath) dyed differently depending whether washing soda or ammonia was used to raise the pH. On the left is no 1 where the washing soda was used and cotton dyed bluish, and on the right ammonia was used, and cotton didn't take blue or green colors at all. More mysteries.
Tästä tulikin tosi pitkä juttu ja jatkoa varmaan vielä seuraa, jälkiliemiä on ämpärissä odottamassa ja sieniäkin on edelleen jäljellä yksi ämpärillinen. Langoille on lisäksi tehtävä valonkestotestit keväällä, kunhan aurinkoa alkaa näkyä.
This became a really long posting and there will be more in the future about this mushroom. I have once used baths still in buckets, and I still have one bucketful of mushrooms. Also I have to test these yarns fo lightfastness in the spring, when there is more sun. I think lightfastness may be the weak point of these colors, but we'll see later:)
EDIT.
More about Sarcodon squamosus dyeing here.
