Walnut and Saw-wort dyeing Värjäys jalopähkinöillä ja liuskaläätteellä

Japanese walnuts (Juglans ailanthifolia) from last blog post have now been used for dyeing, or actually the last afterbath from the second batch is now simmering. I got very nice dark brown, then medium brown and last brownish beige colour to my yarns. I didn't use only the hulls, but put the whole walnuts in the bath. It is so difficult to take only the hull, and maybe the seed inside doesn't matter, only I have to take it into account when I figure how much to put yarn in the bath. I used fresh whole nuts 1kg/100g yarn. I boiled the walnuts for two hours and then let the bath cool overnight. The next day I dyed unmordanted yarn and kept the walnuts in the bath the whole time. Last year I got darker colours when I did it the same way and didn't strain the bath. Again I let the yarns cool down in the bath overnight, because I have noticed that the colour gets deeper when the dyeing time gets longer. I dyed the after baths the same way.

I have also dyed with my own grown saw-wort (Serratula tinctoria). They give the strongest colour after they have finished flowering, so there was no rush to dye with them. I now used the whole plants, stems, leaves and seedheads, and at first I thought to use 500g plants to 100g yarn, but when I put the first yarns in the bath, they took the colour right away so well, that I hurried to add more yarn to the same bath with the first yarns. In the end there was 300g plants to 100g yarn, and still the colour became very intense yellow. Maybe too intense. Most of the dyes in the bath were used in this first bath, and when I tried to dye an after bath, the colour was very pale. Not so good, and I will dye those yarns again with something else. In the picture above the bottom colour was dyed on white yarn, and the top colour had a pale slightly uneven blue dyed with woad. Yarns were pre mordanted with alum and cream of tartar.

Suckers and seedlings Juurivesoja ja siementaimia

Kymmenkunta vuotta sitten sain samettisumakin (Rhus typhina) alun.

IN ENGLISH
About ten years ago I got a small Staghorn Sumach (Rhus typhina). Even though it may not be quite hardy here, I wanted it because it looks so exotic and nice and also because it is famous for it's tannin content for dyeing. There are also tannin in the leaves which are easy to collect in the autumn. The original plant has grown to a size of a small tree, about three meters high. I have been warned that it may have lot of suckers, but until this summer there has been none. Earlier in the spring I noticed one sucker near the mother plant and now there has emerged three in the path behind it. It has started to conquer my garden. First I thought that I will just move over them but now I think that maybe I should let them grow a bit more and then collect them for dyeing:). Plants on the right are also dye plants, sawwort, Serratula tinctoria.

IN ENGLISH
This year I meant to sow weld but never did it. Now in a bed where I had it two years ago, there has germinated many weld plants. I had planted that bed with perennials last year, and weld can't grow now there. I will have to move the somewhere else now.

IN ENGLISH
Maybe I will transplant them to my spare beds where there is a bit room. Just now in July I noticed also there weld seedlings, between rows of planted iris and peony seedlings!
In this bed I had sown weld in spring 2013, and it germinated then very badly. Pictures of them here. Next summer 2014 there were just a couple of plants which flowered then and I got to dye with them, but obviously some seeds had dropped to the ground then, because exactly in that spot there are now weld seedlings almost in a row. In 2015 there grew wild madder, Rubia peregrina, which sadly died the next hard winter. Common madder, Rubia tinctoria, has survived those bad winters.
Anyway, in 2017 I planted there my seedlings of irises and peonies to grow, and there hasn't been weld since 2014. It is surprising that they germinated now after five years! These plants are very small still, and most likely won't flower this year, and hopefully they survive the winter and I get to dye with them next summer. Best colour from weld comes from flowering plants and seedheads.

Dyes from weld, sawwort and webcaps Värejä väriresedasta, liuskaläätteestä ja verihelttaseitikeistä

Syyskuu on mennyt yhdessä hujauksessa.
Vihertävämpi väri on värjätty harmaalle langalle.

IN ENGLISH
September has gone so fast. Here are some of my dyeings from past August and September.
Weld grew well in spite of cool summer, and in August it started to flower. The dye content in weld is the largest when 80% of flowers have gone to seed, and the flower stalks contain most of the dye. Also leaves have yellow dyes, but I don't use the thickest stems. This summer here my weld was ready to harvest in September, and the picture below is from the beginning of September. Yellow from weld is bright lemon yellow, I need it for the Spring Spirit -mitten kit. The greener yellow is dyed on naturally grey yarn. If I want more golden yellow from weld, I usually add a little bit of madder to the dye bath, or some of madder after bath liquid. I used now 200g of weld to 100g of yarn.

Eniten väriaineita siinä on lehdissä.

IN ENGLISH
Earlier in August I dyed also yellow with sawwort (Serratula tinctoria). I had sown these plants some years ago, and summer 2016 was the first time I dyed with my own plants. I harvested them when they were in bud and got only quite pale yellow, but this summer I got a much better and stronger colour when the plants were in seed stage when I harvested the leaves (and seed heads). I had read from Guinnot: Serratula tinctoria, a source of natural dye, that in sawwort  the flavonoid content is the largest in the end of the growing season, when the plants have finished flowering, and I did get a much better colour this year when I harvested the leaves later. Most of dyes are in the leaves.
Both weld and sawwort contain quite lightfast flavonoids like luteolin, and sawwort is a good dye plant for me also because it is perennial so I don't have to sow every year like I do with weld. The only negative thing about it is that deer seem to like to eat it, and they don't eat weld or goldenrods.
Picture of the yellow from sawwort is below. I used 500g of fresh leave to 100g of yarn.

IN ENGLISH
Last week I have dyed with mushrooms. In the picture below there are webcaps Cortinarius semisanguineus and what colour I got from them. I use 1,5kg of fresh mushrooms to 100g of yarn and from that amount I got first the darker red, and then orange in the after bath. I use these yarn in Autumn Fire -mitten kits.
Though I boil the mushrooms to extract the colour, I keep the dye bath with yarns in it below 80°C, preferably around 70°C (same as with madder). In the hotter bath also the yellow dyes from the mushrooms attach and change the resulting colour more rust red. Many times I also boil the mushrooms second time to extract more colour from them. Or I can extract the colour twice and then combine the baths to get a even stronger first bath. I have a feeling that combining several extractions from the same mushrooms I get more dye out the mushrooms, it is like the amount of fresh water matters, and the bath can get too saturated, but this is just  a feeling. Also I have noticed that unlike with most green plants (which benefit from long soaking) with mushrooms when I have boiled them, it is best to strain them right away and not let the bath cool with mushrooms in it. Somehow it seems like some of the dye could go back to to mushrooms if left to cool for overnight with mushrooms in it. I don't know if anyone else has the experience?

Pictures from dye garden Kuvia värikasvimaalta

Kaikki kasvaa kovaa vauhtia.

IN ENGLISH
Everything grows so fast. Here are some pictures from my beds for perennial dye plants. Annual japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) grows elsewhere in the garden among the edible plants, and it is now covered with horticultural fleece so I don't have pictures of it now, I'll take them later as well as of Dyer's Coreopsis (Coreopsis tinctoria). Also woad (Isatis tinctoria) planted this year is growing near the greenhouse. In the picture above is a flowering second year woad plant. I cut the flower stems down from most of them so that they grow leaves and I can dye with them in a couple of weeks.

Tarkoitukseni olisi istuttaa tuohon penkkiin villin krapin (Rubia peregrina) taimet hiukan myöhemmin.

IN ENGLISH
Last year my weld (Reseda luteola) germinated and grew badly, and from those plants only these four survived over winter. Well, anyway now I get new seeds and a small dye from these plants once they flower. I'm going to plant my wild madder (Rubia peregrina) plants to the empty space in this bed.

IN ENGLISH
Sawwort (Serratula tinctoria) has survived winter well and they are now starting to grow flower stems. I thought they would be bigger plants but perhaps they become more bushy when they get older. I'm going to dye with them already this year, though I'm going to save some plants so they can set seeds and I get more of them, now there are only about twenty plants.

IN ENGLISH
The stems of Dyer's Broom (Genista tinctoria) died again to the ground in the winter, but the new shoots are growing well and by the end of the summer I will get good golden yellows from these plants.

Tässä on etualalla krappia (Rubia tinctoria), niiden oikealla puolella tarhapiiskuja (Solidago sp), ja sumakki (Rhus typhina). Polun takana on pensasväriherneitä.

IN ENGLISH
Here in the foreground grows madder (Rubia tinctoria) and to the right from it goldenrods (Solidago sp) and staghorn sumach (Rhus typhina). Behind the path there are dyer's broom. Behind the goldenrods there is one plant of comfrey (Symphytum officinale), a dark violet flowering form. I planted it there many years ago when I got it and although I had transplanted it to another place in the garden, it grew back here from a small piece of root left in the ground (not intentionally). I don't use this as a dye plant, although it is said to give color, but I never succeeded when I have tried to dye with blue flowering Prickly comfrey (Symphytum asperum) which I have several plants. I got only beige from it. Sometimes I would like to try once more, especially since I have to cut it down anyway before the seeds ripen.

IN ENGLISH
The two small madder plants on the right are the ones I dug up in May, took most of the big roots and planted them back with only small roots. Before digging them up they were as big as the one plant in the left. The rain couple of days ago flattened some of the stems and I'm now thinking that maybe I will mulch them so that they would grow more roots along the stems, I have heard that they could do it. I will have to try it!

IN ENGLISH
Finally this picture. Last autumn I got seeds of Bog Myrtle (Myrica gale) from a gardening friend. Bog myrtle grows as native plant around her summer cottage by the lake in middle of Finland. There were quite a lot of seeds and it seems they all have germinated, what am I going to do with these all!  I will have to prick out them now and after the plants have grown bigger I think I will plant only some in the garden and most near the lake behind our house. Bog Myrtle is a traditional dye plant, it gives yellow, what else, but it should be quite light fast yellow so that is why I wanted to have it in the dye garden.
