New Year Uusi vuosi

Uusi vuosi on alkanut erilaisena kuin viime vuosi. Lunta ja pakkasta on ollut viime viikolla aika tavalla, toisin kuin viime talvena, ja talviset kelit näyttävät ainakin ennusteen valossa jatkuvan koko talven. Otin nämä kuvat puutarhasta eilen.

Viime vuosi toi muutenkin kaikenlaisia muutoksia. Kun turistit katosivat ja torikauppa hiljeni, niin nettikauppa yllättäen vilkastui, ja varsinkin suomalaiset löysivät meidät. Olen siitä ikionnellinen teille kaikille! Paljon tuli myös tilauksia vanhoilta ulkomaisilta asiakkailta, ja neulominen onkin ollut sellaista mitä on pystynyt tekemään vaikka olisi ollut ulkonaliikkumiskieltojakin, niinkuin muualla päin maailmaa on ollut koronan takia. Minua itse asiassa korona ei olekaan muuten paljoa haitannut, koska olen voinut värjätä kotona ja nettikaupan ansioista myynti on sujunut postin kautta, ja kontakteja on ollut helppo välttää. Puutarhanhoitokin on ollut mukavaa ja turvallista, ja antanut niin paljon, varsinkin kun koko viime vuosi oli puutarhuroinnin kannalta ihanteellisen pitkä.

Tälle vuodelle tulee myös muutoksia. 

Sanoimme nyt vuodenvaihteesta toripaikkamme lopullisesti irti, kun näyttää siltä, että vielä ensi kesäksi tuskin turistiliikenne tulee palaamaan, ja jatkosta ei tiedä. Eli tästä lähtien myyntimme on vain nettikaupan kautta. Kotona meillä ei ole myyntitiloja eikä myyntiä. Tulevana keväänä pääsen myös eläkkeelle, joten siksikin nettimyynti saa jäädä ainoaksi myyntikanavaksi. Vähennän värjäämistä ja myynnistä tulee pienimuotoisempaa, mutta jatkamme näin, ainakin toistaiseksi:). 

Viime keväänä, kun  tilanne näytti huonolta, niin silloin pelkäsin pahinta, enkä sitten teettänytkään kaikkia niitä villoja langoiksi, mitä olin suunnitellut edellissyksynä. Sitten  nettimyynti kuitenkin alkoi vetää hyvin, ja nyt osa langoista on jo loppunut. Oli vaikea ennakoida kun mikään ei ollut niinkuin ennen, ja lankojen suhteen olisi aina syksyllä tiedettävä seuraavan vuoden menekki, jotta osaa hankkia sopivan määrän hyviä syksyvilloja. En olisi uskonut keväällä miten kivasti langat tekivät kauppansa netin kautta. Veimme uusia villoja kehrättäväksi taas viime marraskuussa, ja saan ne lankoina vasta maalis-huhtikuussa, eli kunnes ne tulevat niin nyt ovat valkoiset ja vaaleanharmaat Aarni-langat ihan lopussa. Muita lampaan värejä vielä riittää toistaiseksi, ja myös värjättyjä lankoja vielä riittää jonkin verran viime kauden värjäyksistä.

This winter is very different than last winter. Now there is a lot of snow and it's been colder than usually this January. These pictures are from the garden yesterday.

Last year there were a lot of changes. When tourists disappeared and selling at the market stopped, suddenly online selling increased a lot. Especially Finnish knitters found us, and also many old customers from abroad placed orders, which I'm so so grateful! Knitting is something anyone can do even in lockdown, which was how it was or still is in many countries. I am fortunate being able to dye at home and outside, and sell through online shop, so avoiding contacts has been easy for me. Also garden has been my sanctuary, and I love gardening. I can't wait for the next spring.

There will be also changes this year. 

The market will not be back to "normal" even next summer, and no-one knows when it will. We have had to pay monthly rent to keep our place even if we weren't there, and so now we decided to give up our place there for good.    

So, from now on we will sell only through our online shop. Also in early summer this year I will start to get retirement pension. I'm going to dye less, and sell less in the future, but we will continue this way, for the moment.

Last spring when things looked bad, I didn't have all the wool, that was reserved for that year, spun into yarn. Then online selling increased and already now Aarni Natural White and Aarni Natural Light Grey are out of stock. It has been difficult to predict the future when everything has changed, and I only get good wool once a year in the autumn and at that time I have to know how much I will need for next year. So now we have new wool from last autumn in the spinnery being spun and we get those yarns in March or April. Until that, I'm sorry to say that there is no white or light grey Aarni available. There are still other natural colours of the sheep available, and some yarns dyed with natural dyes last season.

Spring in the middle of corona Kevättä koronan keskeltä

Kevät on ollut aikainen tänä lumettomana talvena, ja puutarhasta on paljon iloa, kun muuten asiat ovat sekaisin koronaviruksen vuoksi. Me olemme olleet terveitä ainakin toistaiseksi, mutta korona on vaikuttanut ja vaikeuttanut kyllä muuten toimintaamme.

Ensiksikin emme ole olleet torilla maaliskuun puolivälin jälkeen, ja näyttää siltä, että ainakin huhtikuu ja toukokuu pitää olla kotona, mahdollisesti vielä kesäkuukin. Täytyy katsoa asiaa sitä mukaa kun aika kuluu. Vaikka Suomessa purettaisiin rajoituksia alkukesästä (ja tätäkään ei vielä voi tietää), niin kulkevatko risteilyalukset ja onko niillä edes turisteja. Ja milloin edes turistit palaavat. Olen kyllä tiennyt, miten riippuvaisia olemme turisteista, mutta nyt sen huomaan todella konkreettisesti. Jos ei ole turisteja, ei tule kauppaa:(. Torimyynnillä on minulle tosi iso merkitys, ja ajatella: siitä kun sain  torikortin Helsingin Kauppatorille on jo 25 vuotta! Ei tunnu yhtään siltä, että siitä olisi niin pitkä aika. Jos tämä koronaepidemia olisi tullut ensi vuonna, niin olisi ollut helppo ratkaisu lopettaa Riihivilla ja jäädä eläkkeelle, koska vuoden päästä minulla olisi siihen mahdollisuus. Nyt kuitenkin pitäisi vielä jotenkin jatkaa toimintaa ensi vuoteen saakka, mutta ei ole helppoa ilman toria.

Nettikauppa tietysti toimii karanteenienkin keskellä. Värjäyskausi alkaa näihin aikoihin, ja luonnonväriaineita löytyy nettikaupasta, lankojen ja tarvikepakettien lisäksi.
En kuulu varsinaisesti vielä mihinkään riskiryhmään koronan takia, mutta yritämme silti olla aika paljon erossa kontakteista muihin ihmisiin tässä tilanteessa. Siksi postitan tilauksia vain kahdesti viikossa: maanantaina ja keskiviikkona.
Nettikaupassa on myös nyt mahdollisuus ottaa kotiinkuljetus, vaikka se on hiukan kalliimpaa kuin nouto automaatista. Postin hinnat tavallisten pakettien osalta nousivat hiukan huhtikuun alussa, ja niihin tuli tilavuushinnoittelu, mutta Matkahuollon kautta lähetys on hiukan edullisempaa tällä hetkellä. Ulkomaille menevissä tilauksissa on viivettä matkan kulussa, varsinkin niissä tilauksissa, mitkä menevät lentämällä, koska lentoja ei nyt ole niin tiheään kuin tavallisesti. Onneksi kuitenkin nekin lähetykset kulkevat vaikkakin selvästi hitaammin.

Toisaalta tämmöisinäkin aikoina on helppo olla iloinen ympärillä heräävästä luonnosta ja siitä, että on kevät. Muuttolinnut saapuvat, kasvit nousevat maasta, ensimmäiset kukat kukkivat ja kohta saa jo omaa salaattia aikaisesta kylvöksestä kasvihuoneesta. Mikäpä täällä on meidän ollessa, niin kauan kun pysymme terveenä:). Pysytään kaikki turvassa ja terveinä.

Spring has arrived early in this snowless winter, and garden gives me so much pleasure in this otherwise difficult time. We have been well, but coronavirus has affected and made it difficult for our business in other ways.

First, we haven't been at the market in Helsinki at all since mid March, and it looks like we can't go there in April or May either. Even June looks uncertain. No-one knows when this epidemic is over, and when all the restrictions are over. The peak of corona epidemic is predicted to occur here in May, but all is uncertain of course. What happens in the rest of the world also is uncertain. When can the cruse ships come again, and are there any customers for us even if they come.  Our business is so depending on tourists and selling at the market, and I now realize it again. I started at the market 25 years ago this year! It doesn't feel at all like so long ago. If corona epidemic had come next year, it would have been an easy decision to close Riihivilla for good, because a year from now I start to get pension, but now I will have to find a way to continue until  next year. It is not easy without the market, but I hope things will become better during summer, and selling at the market can continue then.

My online shop is open, so that helps a little. There have been many old customers from years ago that have made orders earlier this winter, and I'm so grateful and happy for them. Thank you!
We try to avoid contact with people and going to town at this time, so that is why we ship only twice a week: on Mondays and Wednesdays. Finnish Mail says that there will be delays in shipping abroad, but I'm glad to write that the delay seems not to be very long when shipped to Europe, it is almost normal. However, shipping to outside Europe has taken longer the past month. When it usually takes 10-14 days, it has taken now 20 -25 days. I believe that this is due to not so many planes flying across the ocean at this time. So, even if shipping is slower, it still works, and we can continue to ship to United States or Canada:). UPS is faster, but about twice as expensive. If you want to use UPS as a courier, please write to me and I can find out the exact price.

Despite all the difficulties, it is now spring, and living in the countryside, where I can enjoy the awakening of nature around me and it gives me so much pleasure. Migrating birds are arriving and air is full of their song in the mornings. Plants are coming up, and the first ones are already flowering in the garden and also in the wild, yesterday we went to see flowering Hepaticas in the woods nearby.
Soon I will get my own first lettuce grown in my polytunnel. As long as we stay healthy, life is good:).

Just as I wrote yesterday that mail goes overseas ok, but slower, today April 9th, Finnish Mail says that shipping to United States, Canada and Australia does not go. They say that the situation changes every week, and they try to find planes which go overseas. So it is a bit confusing right now. 
Shipping to Europe goes well with no trouble.

Weld and other thoughts Resedaa ja muita mietteitä

Värireseda on kasvanut hyvin, vaikka vielä kesäkuussa ne olivat pieniä. Tämä kuva on viime viikolta, ja viime päivien aikana se on alkanut haaroittua lisää. Elokuun lopulla siitä tulee hyvä sato:)
Väriresedan väriainepitoisuus on suurimmillaan silloin kun ensimmäiset siemenet alkavat kypsyä, eli sen kanssa kannattaa odottaa sadonkorjuuta.
Tällä hetkellä keruuta odottavat parhaillaan kukkivat ahdekaunokit ja myös ensimmäiset tarhapiiskut ovat valmiita kerättäväksi värjäykseen. Morsinkoakin saan jo ehkä tällä viikolla, mutta väritattaret eivät ole pitäneet tästä viileästä kesästä ja niiden kanssa odotan ainakin elokuun lopulle ennenkuin alan värjätä niillä.

Tapasin torilla lauantaina Luciana Marronen Argentiinasta, hän on Etelä-Amerikkalaisten luonnonvärien asiantuntija. Täällä hänen Facebook-sivunsa. Sattuipa tosi mukavasti, että minä olin sinä päivänä torilla:)
Voi kun minulla olisi ollut siellä enemmän perinteisillä suomalaisilla kasveilla tai sienillä värjättyjä lankoja, mutta pääosan myynnissä olevista langoista olen värjännyt indigolla (vaikkakin itse myös kasvattamallani väriresedalla tai morsingolla), krapilla ja kokenillilla. Asiakkaat ostavat eniten voimakkaita sinisiä, punaisia, violetteja ja vihreitä, ja siksi niitä pitää olla myynnissä. Keltaiset ja hailukammat värit myyvät heikommin, niiden valonkesto on myös heikompi, joten siksikään niitä ei kannata pitää torilla :(
On minulla torilla kuitenkin myös samettijalkavihreää ja seitikkipunaista/oranssia, mutta puiden kuorilla tai lehdillä värjättyjä lankoja harvemmin. Ajattelin, että täytyy nyt alkaa pitää torilla mukana edes pieniä vyyhtejä näistä suomalaisemmistakin väreistä:) Itse puutarhassa kasvattamani värikasvit ovat sellaisia, millä värjätään ympäri maailmaa, ja jotka on hyväksi todettuja, mutta saan omalta tontiltamme ja lähiympäristöstä myös paljon luonnonkasveja, mitkä antavat väriä. Paljon olenkin kokeillut ja värjännyt niillä pieniä määriä lankoja aikojen kuluessa.

Weld has grown well, though it has been quite cool summer this year, and the plants were small in June. The picture above is from last week and they had already branched out more since then. I will have a good crop of weld in the end of August:) The best dye content in weld is when the first seeds begin to ripen, so I will have to wait more until harvest.
At the moment knapweed Centaurea jacea is flowering and ready to harvest, and also the first goldenrods are ready. I think I can start harvesting woad also this week, but japanese indigo has not liked this summer, and it will be at least two or three more weeks before it is ready.

Last Saturday I met at the market Luciana Marrone from Argentina, an expert of natural dyes in South America. Her Facebook pages are here. She was visiting Finland, and I'm so glad I happened to be at the market when she came:) 
I wish I had had more yarns dyed with traditional Finnish dye plants and mushrooms, but people buy blues and strong reds, purples and greens best, so I have to dye them most. Yellows and paler colors don't sell so well, and also their lightfastness is no as good, so that is why I don't have them so much for sale:(
I do have green dyed with mushroom Tapinella atrotomentosa, and reds /oranges dyed with Cortinarius mushrooms at the market, but only occasionally yarns dyed with tree barks or leaves. I now started to think that I should have more, even small skeins, of yarns dyed with Finnish wild plants at the market. Plants which I grow mostly in my garden are more universal dye plants, but I have dyed with many wild plants collected from our own property, and mushrooms from the woods.

Torilla oli tänä keväänä uudelleenjärjestelyjä paikkojen suhteen ja meidänkin kojumme paikka muuttui, ainakin täksi kesäksi. Kaikkiaan kojut ovat nyt enemmän neliöinä ja asiakkaille on enemmän tilaa myös pääkäytävien välissä. Meidän uusi paikkamme on nyt Katajanokan päässä toria, myös keskemmällä eikä enää kadun varressa. Alla on kartta torista ja meidän paikkamme on merkitty punaisella täplällä.
Ensi viikosta alkaen pääasiassa mieheni tai joskus minä olemme torilla kolmesta viiteen päivään viikossa, riippuen risteilijälaivoista ja säistä. Kirjoitan taas tulevan viikon toripäivät tänne blogini reunapalkkiin. Olisi mukava, jos pystyisi olemaan torilla joka päivä, mutta kun meiltä on sinne matkaa aika paljon ja päivät ovat pitkiä, niin se ei ole mahdollista. Epäilen myös, ettei myytävä riittäisikään koko kesäksi niin, vaikka yritänkin olla ahkera:) Tervetuloa torille!

There have been some changes at the market this spring, and also our booth is now in a different place than previously. Our new place is more in the middle and closer to Katajanokka. Below is a map of the market and our booth is marked with a red dot.
From next week on we will be at the market three to five days a week depending on the cruise ships coming to Helsinki and also depending on weather. Mostly my husband is there, but sometimes also I will be there in the summer, but mainly my time is spent making more to sell. It would be nice to be able to sell every day, but since we live quite far from the market (120km), and days are very long, that is not possible. I doubt that I would even have enough to sell for every day all summer, though I try to be busy and productive:)

Market and planting indigo and fructose-indigo vat Toria, väritattaren istutusta ja indigo-fruktoosikyyppi

Kesän torikausi Helsingin Kauppatorilla on taas alkanut. Nyt toukokuussa mieheni on ollut torilla suunnilleen kolmena päivänä viikossa, ja ensi viikosta lähtien toripäiviä tulee enemmän, kesän ajan minäkin olen siellä jonkin päivän viikossa.

The summer season at the market Kauppatori in Helsinki has started. In May my husband has been at the market about three days a week, and from next week on we'll be there four or five days a week. I will also be there some days.
Our booth is on the right in the picture, we have a Riihivilla sign, and also you will identify us also from our Finnsheep yarns dyed with natural dyes, mitten kits and my husbands nature photos.

Huhtikuu oli viileä, mutta nyt helteiden alettua uskalsin jo viikonloppuna aloittaa väritattaren istuttamisen ulos. Kuvan ottamisen jälkeen peitin kasvit harsolla, että ne pysyisivät mahdollisimman lämpiminä.

April was quite cold but now it has been unusually warm considering this time of year, and couple of days ago I started to plant japanese indigo outside. After taking the pictures I covered them with horticultural fleece to keep them as warm as possible.

Tänä vuonna kylvin morsingon suoraan maahan huhtikuussa, reilu kuukausi sitten. Itäminen kesti melkein kolme viikkoa varmaan viileiden säiden takia, mutta nyt taimet ovat hyvässä kasvussa. Seuraavaksi ne pitäisi harventaa, koska olin kylvänyt ne liian tiheään.

This year I sowed woad straight outside in April, a little over a month ago. Germination took almost three weeks, because of the cold weather I think, but now they are growing well. Next I have to thin them, because there are too many plants too close to each other.

Kymmenen päivää sitten tein indigofruktoosikyypin. Halusin kokeilla toimisiko tavallinen sokeri pelkistäjänä. Reseptejä fruktoosikyyppiin löytyy sivupalkin otsikon Indigovärjäys alta. Nyt tässä oli 5l vettä, 20g indigoa, 40g sammutettua kalkkia, 60g sokeria ja kourallinen krappia. Tavallinen sokeri ei kuitenkaan alkanut toimia, ja parin tunnin odotuksen jälkeen lisäsin kyyppiin n 80g hunajaa (koska hedelmäsokeri oli muuttunut klimpiksi enkä saanut siitä irti pientä palaa). Hunaja tehosikin heti, ja vartin kuluttua liemi oli jo pelkistynyt. Värjäsin silloin muutaman vyyhdin yksi kerrallaan ja kaadoin liemen ämpäriin (koska tarvitsin kattilaa muuhun) ja peitin sen kannella. Huomasin jo seuraavana päivänä, että liemi oli pelkistynyt lisää yön aikana, mutta en ehtinyt tehdä sille mitään. Koko se viikko ja seuraavakin oli tosi kiireistä, mutta sitten eilen kurkistin ämpäriin ja yllätyksekseni liemi oli pelkistynyt lisää. Ämpäri oli ollut kuistilla tämän ajan, ja vaikka päivisin onkin ollut yli 20 astetta lämmintä, niin öisin lämpö on ollut 5-10 astetta, eli lämpötila on heitellyt paljon eikä liemi ole ollut ollenkaan niin lämmin mitä yleensä suositellaan. Siksi olinkin yllättynyt, että liemi näytti hyvältä värjättäväksi. Liemen pinnalla oli sininen kuplista muodostunut kuori ja alla liemi oli täydellisen kellanruskeaa. Liemen pH oli pysynyt korkeana (eli se ei ollut kuitenkaan alkanut käydä), 10-11, ja sen lämpö oli 25°C, kun nyt laitoin pohjalle ritilän ja yhden vyyhdin lankaa.

Ten days ago I made fructose indigo vat. I wanted to try common sugar in it (because I read someone succeeding with it). I had 5 litres of water, 20grams of indigo, 40 grams of lime, 60 grams of sugar and handful of madder. Ordinary sugar didn't start to work, so after waiting for two hours I added about 80 grams of honey (because my fructose had gotten moist in storage and became a rock hard clump which I couldn't break to smaller pieces). Honey worked wonderfully in only 15 minutes and the vat was ready to dye. I dyed several skeins with the vat then, and because I needed the pot to something else I poured the vat to the red bucket and covered it with a lid. The next day I noticed that the vat was working still fine, but I didn't have time to dye with it. All that week and the next week also I was busy with other things, but then yesterday I looked at the bucket and to my surprise it had good blue froth on top and the liquid below was perfect brownish yellow. Bucket had been outside in our porch all this ten days, and even though the day temperatures were over 20°C, the nights were between 5-10°C, so the temperature varied a lot. I had thought the vat had to be kept warm in order for it to reduce, but this lime-madder-honey-vat did it in quite cool temperature. The pH had stayed high, 10-11 (so the vat hadn't fermented which lowers the pH), and now today when I dyed with it, the temperature of the vat was 25°C. It seemed to be enough because it dyed well.

Vaaleansininen lanka oikeassa reunassa on miltä se näytti ensimmäisen dippauksen jälkeen, toisella dippauksella väri tummeni. Vihreissä on yhdistetty keltaista ja indigoa (tavallisessa hydrosulfiittikyypissä) vaikka mielummin värjäänkin ensin sinisen ja sitten keltaisen, niin nyt minulla oli tylsää keltaista jonka halusin värjätä vihreäksi.

The light blue on the right is how it looked after the first dip today, after second dip the colour became darker. The greens were yellows overdyed with indigo (in hydrosulfite vat) though I usually prefer to dye first blue and then yellow, but  I had some ugly yellows which I wanted to dye green.

Japanese indigo again Vielä väritatarta

Suurin osa väritattarista (Persicaria tinctoria) on kasvanut oikein hyvin. Kesä- ja heinäkuu olivat pilvisiä ja lämpötila oli harvoin yli 20C, sitten taas elokuu on ollut kuuma ja kuiva. Nämä on kylvetty maaliskuun lopulla ja istutettu ulos touko-kesäkuun vaihteessa. Ensimmäisen kuukauden istutuksen jälkeen pidän kasvit peitettynä harsolla kunnes ne ovat juurtuneet hyvin ja myös viileät yöt ovat sitten yleensä ohi. Etelämpänä väritattaresta saa kaksi tai jopa kolme satoa, mutta siellä ne istutetaan ulos jo toukokuun alkupuolella eli kasvukautta on kuukauden verran pidempään kuin täällä on mahdollista. Näistäkin olisi ehkä voinut leikata satoa jo elokuun alkupuolella, mutta koska ne eivät kuitenkaan ehdi kasvaa tarpeeksi toista satoa varten (2kk), niin olen katsonut parhaaksi antaa niiden kasvaa niin pitkään kuin mahdollista ennen sadonkorjuuta, että saan mahdollisimman paljon satoa ja että ne ehtivät kerätä mahdollisimman paljon indigon esiasteita lehtiinsä. Toisaalta sitten pitää ajatella sitä, milloin tulee hallaöitä, että ehdin korjata sadon ennen sitä. Yksittäisiä nollaöitä varten väritattaret kyllä kannattaa peittää harsolla, jos sitten taas tulee lämpimämpää.

Most of my japanese indigo plants have grown well again this summer. June and July were cloudy and the temperature was rarely over 20C, then August has been very dry and hot. These plants were sown in late March, and planted outside in the beginning of June when the night frosts were over. I keep them covered with horticultural fleece for the first month because nights are still rather cool usually here in June, and especially so this year. In more southern latitudes japanese indigo can be planted outside earlier and it also gives two or even three crops, but here it is not possible. I have thought best to let them grow as long as possible before harvesting them because  I couldn't get a second crop anyway, there is not time for it to grow enough (2 months from the first harvest) before the night frost in September. At least in most years. On the other hand I have to start the harvesting in time before the frosts. For one or two zero temperature nights in the autumn I can cover the plants to save them.

Väritatarta kasvaa neljässä penkissä, ja yksi niistä on kuivempi kuin muut, vaikka olenkin kattanut maan pinnan ruohosilpulla. Yleensä taimia ei ole tarvinnut kastella, mutta elokuun helteillä tässä yhdessä penkissä kasvavat kasvit alkoivat selvästi kärsiä kuivuudesta, niiden lehdet alkoivat muuttua keltaisemmiksi. Viime viikolla päätin sitten kastella ne letkulla kaivovedellä, koska penkki on liian iso kastelukannulla kasteltavaksi. Nytpä tuli opittua sekin, että kylmä kaivovesi on liian kylmää väritattarille, niiden lehdet saivat siitä viotuksia, jotka muuttuivat sitten sinisiksi. Vähän samannäköistä jälkeä kuin joitakin vuosia sitten kun heinäkuussa tuli raekuuro, joka myös viotti lehtiä.

I have japanese indigo in four beds, and one of them is dryer than the others even though I have covered the ground with grass clippings to conserve the moisture. Because of this organic mulch I don't usually have to water the plants, but in this particular bed the plants clearly started to suffer from drought in hot August, their leaves started to turn yellow. Last week I decided I had to water them but because the bed was too big to water with can and warmer water, I watered it with hose and cold well water. A mistake, I found out. Well water was too cold for japanese indigo, part of the leaves got damaged and turned blue, just the same way they did couple of years ago in July in a hail storm.

Nyt olen sitten aloittanut sadonkorjuun, ensimmäinen ämpärillinen (2,5kg) tuoreita lehtiä tuli tästä penkin reunasta ja sillä värjäsin 1,9kg erilaisia sinisiä. Kasveissa tuntuu olevan hyvin väriaineita pilvisestä alkukesästä huolimatta. Seuraavat kaksi tai kolme viikkoa menevätkin väritattaren kanssa, jotta saan tarpeeksi sinisiä talveksi ja ensi kesän torimyyntiin.

Now I have started to harvest my plants, the first bucketfull of leaves (2,5kg) came from this edge of the bed, and I dyed 1,9kg of different blues with it. It seems that there are plenty of blue precursors in the plants in spite of the cloudy June and July. Next two or three weeks I will be busy harvesting and dyeing with my japanese indigo plants to get blues for the winter and next summer for the market.

Dyer's Year 2014 Värjärin vuosi 2014

Tässä yhteenvetoa minun viime vuodestani. Ylin kuva ehkä kertoo kaiken, ja alin kuva mihin kaikki aika menee, mutta välillä tapahtuu kaikenlaista mielenkiintoista.

Here is a summary about my year 2014. The pictures above and the last picture of this posting tell the main things where my time went,  but  interesting things also happened in between.

Värikasvien kasvattaminen on minusta tosi mielenkiintoista, kasveihin saa jotenkin erilaisen tuntuman, kun niitä seuraa alusta pitäen ja vuodesta toiseen.

I love growing plants and when you grow the dye plants from the beginning you get a different feel for them and colors which they give.

Viime kesä oli niin kuuma, että kaikenlainen aurinkovärjäys ja indigon käymiskyyppi onnistuivat hyvin.

Last summer was so hot that solar dyeing and indigo fermentation dyeing succeeded.

Yksi viime kesän minulle uusista jutuista oli käyttämällä piiskuista saadut punertavat värit. Tätä täytyy kokeilla enemmän, muutenkin käymisvärjäys ja tanniinivärit kiehtovat mieltäni.

One of the new things for me last year was the reddish colors from goldenrods which I got with fermentation dyeing. There is still much to experiment about tannin dyes.

Sienisyksy oli huono täällä missä me asumme, oli liian kuivaa ja lämmintä, mutta värikasvit pitivät helteestä. Väritatar on värikasvi mitä kasvatan eniten, ja näin myös tulevana kesänä morsingon ohella. Jos pitäisi valita kasvatettavaksi vain yksi kasvi, niin se olisi minulle väritatar. Sinisen värin lisäksi siinä riittää aina vaan opeteltavaa.

IN ENGLISH
Mushroom season was not good this year, summer was too hot and autumn too dry, but many dye plants enjoyed hot weather. Japanese indigo is my favourite dye plant and I will continue to grow it this year, with woad, another indigo bearing plant. If I choose only one plant to grow it would be japanese indigo, besides the blue color it gives, there is still things for me to learn about it and indigo dyeing.

Ja tietysti tori vie koko kesäni, toukokuulta syyskuulle. Nyt talvella on aika neuloa valmiita tuotteita kesäksi torille. Tämä loppiaisen jälkeen mieheni onkin torilla taas vain lauantaisen kevääseen asti.

The market takes all my time from May until September,  in the winter I hope I will be able to knit enough for the summer. After today my husband will be at the market only on Saturdays until spring.

Ulkona on pakkasta ja lunta, mutta torilla kävi kauppa mukavasti myös nyt loppiaisena.

It is cold and snow outside, but the sales were good at the market also last week-end and today.

End of August Elokuun loppua

Elokuu on ollut kiireinen torin takia, ja turistikautta riittää vielä pari kolme viikkoa. Viime viikolla on ollut osin sateisia päivä, mutta se ei ole haitannut. Myös komea ukkospilvikin osui yhtenä päivänä torille.

IN ENGLISH
We have been busy all August because of the market, and the tourist season still continues for two or three more weeks. This past week has been rainy at the market, but the selling has been good in spite of the rain. Last week one day there was even a thunder storm.

Lankoja on vielä melko hyvä valikoima, vaikka osa väreistä on loppunut, samoin valmiit neuleet ovat vähissä näin kauden lopulla. Syyskuussa on värjättävä paljon lisää, myös nettikauppaan.

IN ENGLISH
I still have quite good amount of yarn to sell, though some colors are sold out, and I'm also running out of ready made mittens and hats now that the season is ending. I have a lot of dyeing to do in September, also for the online shop.

Myös kotona on satanut ja myrskynnyt, ja yhdestä vanhasta omenapuusta kaatui iso oksa pari päivää sitten. Tästä täytyy kerätä lehdet talteen värjäystä varten, niistä tulee hyvää keltaista.

IN ENGLISH
It has rained a lot at home, too, and couple of days ago the storm felled one big branch from an old apple tree. I will have to collect the leaves from it for dyeing, they give good yellows.

Myös väritatar olisi valmista korjattavaksi, toivottavasti ehdin aloittaa sen korjuun ja värjäyksen sillä tällä viikolla.

Also my japanese indigo is ready for harvesting, I'm hoping to have time to start the harvest and dyeing with it this week.

Welcome to the market Tervetuloa Kauppatorille

Kesän torimyyntikausi on taas alkanut viime viikolla ja päivitän kunkin viikon toripäivät tänne blogiini aina viikon alussa. Alkukesällä mieheni on torilla kolmesta neljään päivään viikossa ja loppukesällä myös minä olen aina välillä torilla jotta myyntipäiviä tulisi mahdollisimman paljon. Toripäivät ovat noin aamu yhdeksästä ilta kuuteen ja meiltä on parin tunnin ajomatka Helsinkiin, joten päivälle tulee pituutta, siksi ihan joka päivä ei yksi ihminen voi olla torilla. Minun aikani menee aika paljon siihen, että värjään ja teen lisää myytävää, myös toivottavasti varastoa syksyä varten, riippuu siitä miten paljon kesällä menee. Todennäköisesti nettikauppaan ei tule paljoakaan uutta kesän aikana, koska suurin osa menee torilla ja yritän pitää siellä mahdollisimman hyvää valikoimaa, mutta viimeistään sitten syksyllä tulee taas uutta nettikauppaankin.
Nettikauppaan liittyen myös sellainen asia, että kesän aikana postitamme tilauksia pääsääntöisesti vain kerran viikossa, joko maanantaina tai tiistaina riippuen toripäivistä ja silloin lähtevät kaikki sunnuntaisin iltapäivään klo 15 mennessä tehdyt ja maksetut tilaukset. Näin siksi, että meillä ei ole kuin yksi auto ja toripäivinä en pääse postiin.

IN ENGLISH
Summer season at the market Kauppatori in Helsinki has started last week for us, and I will update the market days in the beginning of each week here to my blog (the sidebar). In early summer my husband will be at the market three or four days a week and later in the summer also I will be at the market occasionally, so that we could be there as many days as possible during the season. Our booth opens at nine and we'll be there until 6 pm and it takes about two hours to drive to Helsinki from our house, so the days are pretty long. That is why one person can't be there every day. I am mostly at home dyeing, re-skeining yarns, making kits and other things to sell, hopefully I will have also more stock ready for the autumn, but that depends on how good the summer is at the market. I will try to keep as good selection of yarns as possible at the market, so I doubt that I will have anything new to add to the online shop during the summer. I'm sorry about that for the overseas customers, but in the autumn there will be more yarns for the online shop:) And if you happen to visit Helsinki, please stop by our booth. 
Another thing about the online shop is that during the summer I will probably be able to ship only once a week, Monday or Tuesday, and then I ship all the orders that have arrived and been paid by previous Sunday afternoon. This is because we have only one car and during the market days I will not be able to go to the post office.

Our booth is situated by the street and close to the big obelisk of two headed eagle which is in the middle of the market.

Talvella mieheni teki langoille uudet hyllyt torille, nyt langat tulevat paremmin esille ja niitä mahtuu olemaan enemmän, vaikka silti jotain on vielä koreissakin:)

During the winter my husband built new shelves for the yarns, and now there is more room for them. Some yarns are still in the baskets:)

Yesterday at the market Eilen torilla

Muutamia kuvia torilta eilen. Sää on ollut sateisen harmaata, ja ensin aloin kirjoittaa, että epätavallisen lämpimänä, mutta ennen viime vuosien lumitalvia, talvet kyllä etelärannikolla olivat useammin lumettomia tai vähälumisia kuin runsaslumisia pakkastalvia. Ensi viikonloppuna tähän lumettomuuteen kai tulee muutos ja sää kylmenee. Säällä ei ole ollut myyntiin vaikutusta suuntaan tai toiseen silloin kun isoin osa asiakkaista on turisteja. Me tietysti toivomme sellaisia turisteja jotka arvostavat puhdasta villaa joko valmiina tuotteina tai sitten lankoina, ja toivomme että erityisesti neulojat löytävät kojumme:) Ja mukavasti muutamat suomalaisetkin vakioasiakkaamme käyvätkin katsomassa ja ostamassa lankoja, kiitos heille.

IN ENGLISH
Here are some pictures from the market yesterday morning. The weather has been grey and rainy, and I was going to write unusually warm for this time of year, but then started thinking that what the usual weather is like, and many times in the south coast of Finland the we haven't had much snow (unlike north of Finland). The past few winters have been unusually snowy (really, and too long) and cold, this is more what the weather is many times here in the beginning of January. I had hoped for the mild winter to continue, but it seems it's getting colder and snow by the end of the week. The weather doesn't affect the sales when most of the customers are tourists who are here only for a short time. Naturally we hope for tourists who appreciate all wool and that knitters find our booth:) Of course there are some regular Finnish customers as well, which we appreciate very much.

IN ENGLISH
Here are some pictures from web camera by the market, so you see how the market is by the sea and by the harbor. The big cruise ships go to Stockholm and Tallinn also in the winter, and in the summer there are several more cruise ships which come here. The market is also within the walking distance from the center of Helsinki and all the big shops. In the winter the wind may be quite cold from the sea and it is good that my husband tolerates more cold than me:-), but in the summer this is a very beautiful place and the breeze from the sea is nice then.

Talvella myyjiä on paljon vähemmän kuin kesällä ja kaikki myyjät ovatkin talvisaikaan keskellä toria olevan patsaan Espan puiston puoleisella puolella. Tavallisesti myyjiä ei ole arkipäivisin kuin muutama (mekään emme ole arkisin talvella) ja lauantaisinkin enintään saman verran kuin nyt loppiaisaikaan. Kesällä meidän vakituinen myyntipaikkamme on tuolla patsaasta Usbenskin katedraalia kohti vasemmalle, kadun varressa, mutta nyt talvella meillä ei ole vakituista paikkaa vaan joka kerran koju voi olla hiukan eri kohdassa. Tosin myyjiä on sen verran vähän, että varmaan meidät aina kuitenkin löytää helposti.

IN ENGLISH
In the winter there are lot less sellers than in the summer and all the booths are close together nearer to Esplandi park. In the week days there are only a few booths (not us) and even in Saturdays there are the same amount of sellers at the most as in these pictures. In the summertime our permanent place is behind the big statue in the middle of the market, to the left from it, towards Uspenski Cathedral , by the street. In the winter we have no permanent place but there are not so many booths that you can't find us easily, I hope.
