Dye pots and Week Project 2018 Värjäysastioita ja Viikkoprojekti 2018

Joku varmaan luulee, että kun myyn lankoja, niin minulla on täällä pieni lankavärjäämö, melkein tehdas, mutta todellisuudessa värjään aika alkeellisesti ja käsityömäisesti. Suurimman osan värjäyksistä teen ulkona keväällä, kesällä ja syksyllä.  Vanhan ison puulämmitteisen patani ulkokuori alkaa hajota ja pitäisikin korjata, mutta viime kesänä sain myös toisen ihan uuden padan. Kyllä olikin mukavaa, kun siinä vesi lämpeni tosi nopeasti verrattuna vanhaan.

Someone may think that because I sell my yarns, I have a small factory here, but no, in reality my dyeing is quite primitive, I am a craft dyer. Most of the dyeing I do outside during spring, summer and autumn months.
My old wood burning big pot is not so good any more and needs repairing, but last summer I got a brand new big wood burning pot, and it is so good!

Värjään paljon myös sähköllä kuistilla, mistä on näkymä puutarhaan päin.

I dye a lot also in the porch with a nice view towards the garden.

Lisäksi värjäyksiä on purkeissa ja ämpäreissä, liemiä valmistumassa tai lankoja värjääntymässä kesällä ulkolämpötiloissa ja kasvihuoneessa.

There are also many jars and buckets full of dyes fermenting or yarns dyeing in the summer in outside temperatures and in the greenhouse.

Olen monta kertaa kirjoittanut, että pääosa värjäyksistäni on indigolla, joko omalla kasvattamallani tai jauhemaisella, krapilla ja kokenillilla, hiukan keltaista resedalla tai pensasväriherneellä, koska nämä ovat kestävimpiä värejä ja myös koska niitä menee tarvikepaketteihin.  Ja vähän samettijalka- ja verihelttavärjäyksiä. Viime vuosina en ole ehtinyt tehdä juuri lainkaan kokeiluja (mitkä olisivat niitä kivoimpia), mutta joulukuussa aloin ajatella, että jospa ensi vuonna tekisin jotain, edes vähäsen,  eri tavalla.
Meillä on iso tontti, neljä hehtaaria, jossa kasvaa monenlaisia kasveja, joita voisi käyttää värjäykseen. Laskin, että pelkästään erilaisia luonnonvaraisia puita on 16 eri lajia, lisäksi puutarhassa kasvavat istutetut puut ja pensaat ja muut kasvit. Ruohovartisia kasveja on vaikka mitä, koska tontille mahtuu erilaisia biotooppeja metsästä rantakaislikkoon ja kosteaan niittyyn. Monia kasveja ei voi kerätä kilokaupalla isoihin värjäyksiin, mutta pieniä koevärjäyksiä voi helposti tehdä. Välillä minulle on myös tullut (itse aiheutettuja!) paineita siitä, että kaiken pitäisi olla hyvin perusteellista. Pitäisi tehdä kaikki mahdolliset vaihtoehdot aina kyseessä olevasta kasvista, mutta nyt ajattelin antaa itselleni tilaa siinäkin suhteessa, ja nämä nyt tulevat  värjäykset ovat vain näytteitä, ja myös inspiraation lähteitä itselle ja ehkä muillekin, vaikka samoja kasveja ei välttämättä löydykään kaikkialla.

VIIKKOPROJEKTI 2018
Tänä vuonna yritän tehdä joka viikko yhden pienen värjäyksen jollain omalta tontilta saadulla luonnonvaraisella kasvilla.  Talvikuukaudet voivat olla vaikeita, saa nähdä keksinkö värin lähteitä koko talveksi vai käytänkö myös jotain kuivattuja kasveja, saa nähdä. Tästä voi kuitenkin tulla ihan mielenkiintoista. Varoituksena täytyy mainita, että todennäköisesti suurin osa oman tontin kasveista antaa jonkin sortin keltaista:)

I have written many times how I mostly dye with indigo, madder or cochineal, and some yellow with weld or Genista tinctoria, because they are the most fast dyes and also because I need them for my kits. And also some dyeings with mushrooms Tapinella ja Cortinarius. In past few years I haven't had any time for experiments, which I like most, but couple of weeks ago I started thinking that I want to do something even a little bit different next year. Though at the market most people buy blue and red yarns, but sometimes there are customers who ask for something dyed with Finnish native plants.
We have quite a lot of our own land around the house, about four hectares, and there are a lot of plants which I could use for dyeing. I counted that there are 16 different native tree species growing in our land, plus all the trees, bushes and other plants which I have planted in the garden. There are a lot of different herbaceous native plants because there are different habitats from forest to field and meadow by the lake. Many plants I can collect only small amounts, which is enough to dye a sample.
Sometimes I have also felt pressure (mainly from my own thoughts!), that I should do everything very thorough and have every possible variation of colour from each plant before I write here. Now I decided to give myself a break also in that respect, and the dyeings I do now this year are only samples to give inspiration to myself and others, though you may not have the same plants growing near you.

WEEK PROJECT 2018
This year I will try to do one little dyeing each week with a native plant I can find in our own land. I hope I can find enough to dye with during winter months, or if I have to use some dried plants. Summer and autumn are easy, or at least I think so. This will be interesting, though I have to warn you that most colours will be some kind of yellow:)

Back to my roots Takaisin juurilleni

Otan pienen pätkän talteen jokaisesta värjätystä erästä, tässä näytteet tänä vuonna värjätyistä langoista. Kylläpä näyttääkin oranssisävyiseltä, vihreät eivät näy ollenkaan, vaikka on niitä kuitenkin tullut värjättyä aika paljon. Vuoden alussa värjäyseränumero oli 4403, ja nyt mennään numerossa 4668 eli 265 eri värjäystä tänä vuonna. Suurin osa näistä langoista on mennyt torilla, ja myös iso osa on tarvikepaketeissa. Laskin, että tällä hetkellä eri lapasmalleja on 29 ja niitä varten tarvitaan 48 eri väriä plus värjäämättömät lampaanväriset langat. Monet värit ovat lähellä toisiaan, mutta kuitenkin sävyltään hiukan erilaisia, mm Horsmassa oleva pinkki on erilainen kuin Vanamossa tai Ruusunnupussa vaikka molemmat on värjätty kokenillilla, ja mm erilaisia samettijaloilla värjättyjä vihreitä tarvitaan yhteensä kuusi erilaista eri paketteihin. Useimmat värjäyserät ovat puolen kilon kieppeillä, mutta jotkut ovat 700-800g, ja toiset taas vain 100g, ihan riippuen siitä, miten paljon minulla on saatavilla ko kasveja tai sieniä. Osa on myös kokeiluja, joista ei tule mitään erityistä ja jotka värjään uudelleen päälle jollain muulla värillä. Kaksinkertaisia värjäyksiä tulee myös vihreistä ja violeteista.

Tämä on se mitä haluan tehdä ja mikä on mieluisinta, värjätä ja kehittää itseäni siinä. Sitten torimyynti on myös hyvin tärkeää, talven aikana neulon myös pipoja varastoon kesällä myytäväksi. Nettikaupassa tarvikepaketit ovat ne tärkein artikkeli, joita yritän pitää jatkuvasti saatavilla, ja myös värjäämättömiä lankoja. Ensi vuonna täytän 60 ja selvästi huomaan, että mitä enemmän tulee ikää, niin sitä enemmän kaikkeen menee aikaa. Eläkeikään on toki vielä aikaa ja varmasti teen tätä vielä senkin jälkeen, mutta olen ajatellut, että on pakko hiukan hellittää ja vähentää jostain päästä, jotta jaksan vielä pitkään tehdä tätä (ja muutakin, kuten puutarhanhoitoa, josta nautin kovasti vapaa-ajallani). Mietin, mistä voin vähentää ja päädyin siihen, että poistin eilen Facebook-tilini kokonaan. Fb ei ole koskaan tuntunut minulle omalta kanavaltani, ja ehkä siksi siitä oli tullut sellainen pitäisi-pitäisi-juttu. Pitäisi kirjoittaa, pitäisi laittaa kuvia ja pitäisi olla aktiivinen, eikä siihen kumminkaan ollut aikaa, ja sitten on huono omatunto koko ajan.  Siitä tuli oikea negatiivisen energian kerääjä minulle. Oma työni värjäysten kanssa on enemmän sellaista hiljaista, ja parhaimmillaan hyvin keskittynyttä ja rauhallista. Nyt kun poistuin Facebookista, niin heti tuntui, että henkistä energiaa jäi yli. Tämä oli tietysti harmillista niille, ketkä seurasivat Riihivillaa Facebookin kautta, mutta jotain ratkaisuja piti tehdä oman jaksamiseni takia. Jollain lailla tämä nyt tuntuu kuitenkin oikealta, yksinkertaistamiselta ja paluulta juurille.
Blogini on nyt jo yli 10v vanha, ja tämä on se minun yhteyteni muihin. Tästä on niin paljon hyötyä ja iloa itselleni, ja varmasti muillekin. Tulevana talvena voi jossain vaiheessa olla hiljaista, joudun nimittäin silmäleikkaukseen enkä tiedä vielä milloin, mutta sen jälkeen toivottavasti kaikki taas kirkastuu näön myötä, ja uusi kevät ja kesä ovat entistä parempia, ja jaksan uusin voimin.

I take a sample of yarn from every dyeing I do, here are samples from this year. It looks so orange, and like there were no greens at all, but they just don't show, I have dyed a lot of greens:) In the beginning of the year the dye lot number was 4403 and now it is 4668, so there has been 265 dye lots this year so far. Most of the yarn is sold at the market in Helsinki, but also a lot has gone to my mitten kits. I counted that right now I have 29 different kits for sale, and for them I need 48 different dyed colors, plus the natural colors from the sheep. Many color are similar, but not quite the same, for instance the pink for Willow Herb kit is different than the pink for Linnea or Rosebud kits though both are dyed with cochineal. I need six different greens from mushroom Tapinella atrotomentosa alone for different kits. Most dye lots are around 500g but some are 700-800g and some only 100g, depending how much I have plants or mushrooms in question. Some dyeings are experiments, and if they don't give any special color, I will over dye them. Also many greens and purples are done by dyeing the yarn twice.

This is what I want to do, and what I enjoy doing and want to improve my skill in dyeing. Of course selling at the market is also important and that is how we make our living by selling the yarns and hats and mittens which I knit during the winter. In the online shop the mitten kits are the most important article which I try to keep fully stocked all the time.
Next year I will be 60 years old, and already it seems that older I get the more time everything takes. There are still years before retirement, and I am sure I will do this even beyond that, but in order to be able to do that (and also something else in life, like gardening, which I enjoy so much in my free time), I will have to let go of something.
So what I decided to do was that yesterday I deleted my Facebook account. Fb has never been my thing, and it has always been like: I should write this, should post that, should be more active all the time, and I never had enough time and so I felt bad about it all the time.  It was negative energy. 
My own work in the contrary is more quiet, even meditative at  best, and I like to feel at peace when I do it. Now that I let go of Fb, I already feel that I have more energy. I understand that this is not good for many who followed Riihivilla through Facebook, and I am sorry, but I had to do something for myself. This feels right, simplifying things and getting back to my roots.
My blog is now over ten years old and this is my way of keeping in contact with others, and also writing down my experiences. This has helped me a lot, and I hope also others have benefited from it. Some time during the coming winter there may be a quiet period in the blog: I am waiting to have an eye operation, and I don't know yet when that is, but I hope that after that my eyesight and also everything else will become bright again, and new spring and summer will be good.

This and that Sitä ja tätä

Lunta ja talvea riittää, mutta kaikenlaista olen saanut tehtyä: samettijalkavärjäyksiä kuivatuilla sienillä. Sienet ovat niin hyvä, kun niitä voi säilöä kuivaamalla talven varalle, ettei kaikkea tarvitse värjätä heti tuoreeltaan syksyllä.
Olen myös viikko sitten saanut vihdoin laitettua Riihivillalle Facebooksivut, jonne yritän päivittää jotain pientä silloin tällöin. Isommat ja perusteellisemmat värjäysjutut kyllä edelleen tulevat tänne blogiin, sitä mukaa kun jotain kerrottavaa kertyy.
Tähän liittyen olen myös saanut hiukan jatkettua syksyllä kadonneilla kotisivuilla olleita juttuja tänne, eli tuohon oikealle oleville sivulle. Viimeisimpänä yleistä värjäysjuttua  ja varsinkin puretuksesta on nyt valmis artikkeli. Kannattaa vilkaista, lisäilen näihin vähitellen kuvia ja kaikenlaista muutakin omaa kokemusta.

It is so snowy and winter here right now, and still at least two more months until spring, even though the weather forecast promises little warmer now (but still below freezing).. and more snow. I'm so happy to have dried dyestuffs, and most of all mushrooms to dye with, last week I have dyed more olive greens for the mitten kits and also some for the shop.

Also a week ago I finally did Riihivilla Facebook pages, where I try to write short updates once in a while of what is happening. Longer dye-related posts will still be here in my blog, when I have something to write about:)
I have also written in the pages section of the blog about mordanting, but that is only in Finnish, I'm sorry.

Pari viikkoa sitten kylvin ylivuotisten väritattarien siemeniä, kokeillakseni miten ne itävät, ja kyllä niissä oli vielä eloa. Suunnilleen puolet siemenistä (viisi kymmenestä siemenestä) iti n 10 vuorokaudessa huoneenlämmössä, eli hyvä tietää, että keväämmällä pitää vain kylvää hiukan enemmän, että saisin saman määrän taimia mitä aiemmin.

Siemeniä katsellessani kiinnitin taas huomiota siihen, että eri väritatarkannoilla on myös hiukan erilaiset siemenet. No1 on pyöreälehtisen väritattaren siemeniä, ne ovat mustanruskeita ja pienempiä kuin no 2, jotka ovat teräväkärkisen väritattaren siemeniä. No 2 siemenet ovat vaaleamman ruskeita ja hiukan isompia. No 3 on 'Senbon'-lajikkeen siemeniä, ne ovat noiden kahden väliltä ulkonäöltään.
Eihän tällä mitään merkitystä oikeastaan ole, kaikki itivät, mutta mielenkiintoista silti, että kasvien ulkomuodon lisäksi myös siemenien ulkonäössä on eroja.

IN ENGLISH
Two weeks ago I sowed some older japanese indigo seeds to see if they still germinate. I sowed ten seeds per variety, and five of ten germinated in ten days in room temperature, so they are still good:) I just need to sow a little more of them in the spring to get the same number of plants as I had last year. 

When I was looking at the seeds, I noticed that the seeds of different varietys also look different. NO 1 are the seeds of the round leaf variety, those seeds are darker brownish black and smaller than the seeds of the pointed leaf variety, NO 2, which seeds are lighter brown in color and slightly bigger.
No 3 are 'Senbon' seeds, they look like intermediate of the first two varietys.
All seeds germinated, so this doesn't matter in any way, I just found it interesting that not only the leaves of the plant look different but also the seeds. 

Happy New Year Hyvää uutta vuotta

Vuosi menee niin nopeasti. Työntäyteisesti, lankoja värjätessä ja puutarhassa. Monet kokeilut jäivät tekemättä, mutta ehkäpä tulevana vuonna. Omat indigokasvit, väritatar ja morsinko, olivat viime vuonnakin niitä, mitkä kiehtoivat eniten, eivätkä ne vieläkään paljastaneet kaikkia salaisuuksiaan. Puhumattakaan tietysti orakkaista. Saapa nähdä millainen ensi vuodesta tulee, tässä kuitenkin vähän kuvia kuluneelta vuodelta. Värikasvejani, liemiä, lankoja ja tarvikepaketteja, siinä se aika menee. Kiitos myös kaikille, jotka olette ostaneet lankojani, ja hyvää tulevaa vuotta!

A year went by so fast. Working, dyeing and gardening. I didn't have time to do as many experiments as I would have liked to, but there is always a next year. I was most of all fascinated (again) by my own grown japanese indigo and woad, and there is still a lot to learn about them for me. Not to speak of the tooth fungi, more mysteries there.

Colourful of the Year Vuoden Värikäs

Värjärikilta on aina valinnut kesän värjäripäivien yhteydessä Vuoden Värikkään (henkilön/henkilö). Sain eilen onnittelukortin hallituksen jäseniltä, että minut on valittu tänä vuonna Vuoden Värikkääksi.

Finnish Natural Dyer's Association has every year elected a person or persons as Colourful of the Year, a honorary title. Yesterday I recieved a congratulation card from the board members that I was elected as Colourful of the Year this time. Thank you so much, I try to be worthy of the title:)

Happy Birthday to my Blog Syntymäpäiväonnitteluja blogilleni

Viime viikolla tuli neljä vuotta tämän blogini aloittamisesta ja paljon on tapahtunut tänä aikana. Blogi on innostanut tekemään enemmän kokeiluja, samoin niiden dokumentointi on ollut parempaa erityisesti kuvien ansioista. Blogin kautta olen oppinut enemmän,  kommenttien sekä niiden antamien linkkien  avulla löytyneiden muiden värjäreiden kokemuksista. Blogin ansioista uusista värjäyksistä ja kokeiluista on tullut pidempijänteisiä projekteja ja värikasvien kasvatukseen on tullut paneuduttua enemmän kuin ennen. Blogin ansiosta olen kehittynyt värjärinä ja toisaalta olen pystynyt näin jakamaan myös kokemuksiani. Ilman blogia en olisi tässä, missä nyt olen!

Näiden neljän vuoden aikana myös Riihivilla on muuttunut. Nettikauppa on tullut kuvioihin, ja sitä myöten torimyynnin osuus on vähentynyt. Lapaspakettejamme on myyty ympäri maailmaa ja  väriaineiden myynti on tullut uutena. Mieheni käy edelleen torilla lauantaisin ja tulevana kesänä 2-3 päivää viikossa, mutta oma aikani menee täysin värjäyksiin ja myytävän tekemiseen torille ja nettikauppaan. Nuorempana jaksoin enemmän,  mutta iän myötä on myös oppinut sen, että jaksamisella on rajansa. On opittava sanomaan ei, ja päättämään mihin käyttää voimansa. Niin mukavaa kuin torilla olikin tavata ihmisia, ei ole järkevää olla siellä, jos se tarkoittaa, että myytävä loppuu, kun ei voi tehdä lisää yhtä aikaa. Tämä on myös yksi syy siihen, että en pidä kursseja tai työpajoja, eikä meillä ole myyntipistettä kotona. Minun juttuni on lankojen värjääminen myyntiin ja että oppisin siinä aina paremmaksi. Tätä tietoa voin sitten jakaa kotisivujen värjäysohjeiden välityksellä ja blogin kautta, ja olla yhteydessä näin muihin, kotoa käsin, silloin kun on vapaa hetki ja jotain uutta kerrottavaa tai näytettävää. Vaikka en kirjoitakaan blogiani kovin usein, niin silti koen tämän hyvin omakseni, ja toivon blogille pitkää ikää ja monia uusia syntymäpäiviä.

Tähän liittyen kiitokset Sailalle Saaripalstalle Beautiful Blogger- tunnustuksesta ja imartelevista sanoista blogistani. Olen huono jatkamaan tunnustuksia eteenpäin, ennemmin annan tunnustuksen kaikille teille, jotka jaksatte lukea blogiani:)

Four years ago last week  I started this blog and a lot has happened since then. My blog has inspired me to do more experiments and to try new dyestuffs and new ways to dye with natural dyes, and also documenting these are now better, expecially because of the  photos. I have learned more because of the blog, through comments other people have left to me and through links to other websites and  blogs about natural dyeing and nature. Many of my experiments have become long-term projects which will give more in the end. I am also now growing more of my own dyeplants than earlier, and I know more about growing them. Thanks to my blog I myself have grown as a dyer, and been able to share my knowledge. Without my blog I wouldn't be where I am now!

During these four years also Riihivilla has changed. There is now the online shop and our mitten kits are being shipped practically  all over the world, and so we sell less often now at the market. My husband still goes to the market on Saturdays and  2-3 days a week in the summer months, but all my own time goes to dyeing and making more things to sell at the market and for the online shop. When I was younger I thought I could do everything and anything, but with age comes the knowledge that there are limits to what one person can do. I have had to learn to say no, and decide what my focus is. As nice as it was being at the market, selling and meeting people, it is not sensible, if it means that I run out of thing to sell when there is no-one home making more. And I want to keep it simple and small-scale and not hire anyone else. This is also one of the reasons why I don't have workshops or take visitors at home. It sounds really unfriendly but that's just the way it is:( My thing is dyeing my wool with natural dyes for sale, and my goal to try to become a  better natural dyer. I want to share my knowledge and experiences through my blog, and connect with others this way, from home,  whenever I have something to share, and free time to write it.  Eventhough I don't blog very often, I still feel it is very much my own way of communicating, and I hope a long life to my blog, and many more birthdays to come.

Last week a got a Beautiful Blogger award from Saila's blog Saaripalsta, thank you Saila for your flattering words! I am not good at forwarding these awards, but I will  give a mental award to all of you who read my blog:) 

Dye notes Värjäysmuistiinpanoja

Kiitokset kaikille onnentoivotuksista.
Tämä vuosi alkoi tosi hyvissä merkeissä. Juuri ennen Knitter's Review'n ilmestymistä olin lähettänyt vähän lankalajitelmia Englantiin Ecoknits'ille, joiden periaatteet sopivat hyvin yhteen omieni kanssa. Onneksi heille, että tämä oli sovittu ennen lanka-arvostelun ilmestymistä, koska sen jälkeen en olekaan ehtinyt tehdä muuta kuin värjätä omaan nettikauppaan ja tarvikepaketteihin lankoja, sukkalankojen ja Maahinen-lankojenkin värjäys on jäänyt odottamaan eikä tänä talvena olekaan sellaista loma-tammikuuta, niinkuin aiemmin.
Kaikeksi onneksi sain ostaa myös ystävältäni lisää kuivattuja värisieniä, joten niitäkin riittää nyt vähäksi aikaa, tämäkin onnenpotku osui juuri viime viikkoon:)

Ladka kyseli aiemmin värjäyskirjanpidostani, joka on hyvin vanhanaikainen. Minulla on paksu kovakantinen vihko (itse asiassa juuri aloitin neljännen sellaisen vuoden vaihteessa), johon kirjoitan lyhyesti mistä väriaine on peräisin, kuinka paljon sitä oli, liotusajan, keittoajan ja lämmön suunnilleen, värjätyn langan määrän, puretusaineen ja värin.
Käytännössä eniten käyttämilleni väriaineille käytän aina samaa reseptiä, joka on päässäni (joskus muinoin kyllä kirjattu ylös), näistä en kirjoita ylös kuin päivämäärän ja värjätyn langan määrän. Eihän näilläkään samaa joka kerta tule, vaikka perusresepti olisin sama. Liotus-ja keittoajan vaihtelut vaikuttavat ja esim sienillä niiden ikä, joskus kerätyt sienet ovat olleet vanhempia, joskus nuorempia ihan samassakin kuivurillisessa.
Yön yli liottaminen voi olla mitä tahansa 12 ja 18 tunnin välillä, joskus taas värjäyslämpö nousee nopeasti 80 asteeseen, joskus hitaammin. Joskus lämpö on 85 astetta, joskus 90 astetta, pienetkin erot voivat vaikuttaa ja puilla pataa lämmitettäessä tarkkuus on eri luokkaa kuin teollisemmissa olosuhteissa, jossa voidaan lämmön nousut ja laskut säätää melkein minutilleen.
Tällaisia pikkueroja ei tule kirjattua ylös, vaikka nekin ovat tärkeitä.

Muilla sienillä tai kasveilla, joilla en värjää niin usein, kirjoitan tiedot vihkoon tarkemmin. Näin on helpompi myöhemmin katsoa, mitä olen tehnyt ja miten värjäys on onnistunut. Täsmälleen samaa sävyä harvemmin tulee uudestaan, vaikka noudattaisin samaa reseptiä, toisaalta joskus taas voi hyvinkin tulla ihan samaa, mutta olen oppinut olemaan lupaamatta mitään tiettyä väriä etukäteen. Jos lupaan, silloin sitä ei varmasti tule, ainoastaan minulle stressiä:)
Sitten ovat tietysti erikseen kaikenlaiset jälkiliemet, joita nytkin on tallella muutamia ämpärillisiä ajalta ennen joulua. Joskus näistä pitkään seisseistä tulee hyviä yllätyksiä, mutta vähintäänkin pohjavärejä jollekin muulle, ja siinä vaiheessa kyllä kirjanpitoni pettää.

Värjätyillä myyntilangoillani on juokseva numero ja joka langasta on näyte talletettuna kansioon, viimeisimmästä kansiosta kuva alempana. Värjäämättömien lankojen numerot taas pysyvät osin samana: niillä numerosarjan kaksi viimeistä numeroa osoittavat langan värin. 01 on luonnonvalkoinen, 02 vaalean harmaa jne. Sarjan kaksi ensimmäistä taas osoittavat kehruuerän vuoden. 0801 on 2008 alussa tullut kehruuerä luonnonvalkoista, joka sitten syksyllä loppui, ja tilalle tuli 08201. Värjäämättömilläkin villoilla on eroa.

Olen joskus yrittänyt siirtää värjäysmuistiinpanoja tietokoneelle, mutta en ole saanut vielä tehtyä tarpeeksi hyvää pohjaa, mille tiedot menisivät vaivattomasti ja silloin muistiinpanot jäävät tekemättä. Eli siis kyllä vihko ja kynä on edelleen paras:)

Thank you everyone for the congratulations.
This year has started really well. Just before the Knitter's Review came out, I had sent some dyed yarn selections to Ecoknits in the UK, I think their principles match with mine, and I was honored that Kris asked to have my yarn in her shop. The timing was good for them, because since the yarn review came out and surprised me, I have hardly had enough time to dye for my own shop and for the mitten kits. Sockyarns and Maahinen-yarns are still waiting to be dyed, and this year January seems not to be a holiday month for me like before:) Not even knitting, just dyeing.
Another good thing that happened was that a friend of mine had dried dye mushrooms still left and I could buy them from her, and now I have enough of mushrooms for some time. Also this lucky thing happenend last week. All good things seem to happen all at once:)

Ladka asked earlier about how I keep my dyenotes. It is very old-fashioned. I have a thick notebook (actually I just started fourth notebook),where I write short notes of each dyeing: where the dyestuff came from, how much did I use, how long did I soak and boil or simmered it, how high the temperature was (about), how much yarn did I dye, what mordant did I use and how the color turned out.
In reality for the dyesuffs that I use the most, I have the same recipe (in my head, written down years ago) all the time, and so I write down only the date and how much yarn was dyed. Even when I use the same recipe, I don't get the exactly the same color. The time of soaking and/or simmering vary, and with mushrooms the age of the mushrooms can be different even when I have picked and dried them at the same time.
When I write down that I have soaked the dyestuff overnight, the actual time can be anything between 12 to 18 hours. Then sometimes the temperature of the dyebath raises quickly to simmer, sometimes it takes more time, sometimes the bath is close to boiling, sometimes it stays nicely to just simmer. I don't often write small things like this down, even though they might make a difference.In more industrial environment the temperatures are easier to manage than with my dyepots, which are mostly heated by firewood.
I have learned not to promise to try to repeat the color, sometimes I do get the same color, but it it certain that if I want it to be the same, it never will be, and all I get is a lot of stress.
Then there are different afterbaths, many times I save the bath and use it to dye sometime later (like now I have a few buckets of used dyebaths from before Christmas). It might dye nicely again after sitting for a few days or weeks, then again it might only give me a tan base for some brighter and better color. I have to confess that keeping notes of all the afterbaths is something I don't do well.

When I dye with plants or mushrooms which I don't use weekly or every month, I write down the recipes more carefully. This way it is easy to read later what I had done and how the color had turned out, and I might have better chance to learn from earlier experience. I used to think I remember more than I actually do, I have learned this the hard way:)

For all the dyed yarns that I sell, I give a number (I am now in a number little over 2100) and I keep a sample of the yarn in my folder with information what that number was dyed with and a reference in my notebook. There is a picture below of one of my sample folders, not so tidy, but it works.
The numbers of the undyed natural yarns stay partly the same: the last two numbers show the color of the yarn, like 01 is natural white, 02 is natural light grey and so on. The first two numbers of the natural yarns tell the year when that particular yarn was spun, like 0801 tells me it is a natural white yarn spun in the beginning of 2008. 08201 is a natural white spun later in 2008, after I had sold all the first spinning lot. So there are color differences also in natural undyed yarns and it is important to keep track of them, too.

I have sometime tried to keep my notes in a computer, but haven't had patience (or knowledge)enough to make good and simple chart, where the information would be easy and fast to write.
So for now it is a pen and notebook for me:)

Seven facts about me Seitsemän seikkaa minusta

Helen had tagged me yesterday, I am very flattered, I really am:-), but awards and this kind of things are very difficult for me, because I read regularly very few other blogs, and nominating seven more is impossible for me. When I have time I do read blogs occasionally, especially knitting blogs through Ravelry and some dyeblogs. I hope there were be more blogs about natural dyeing, now the ones I read are the ones Helen had already tagged. I know there are thousands of wonderful blogs in the world, perhaps I will find time to read them sometime.

So now I'll just write seven things about me, I hope you are not very mad at me for breaking the chain.

1. In high school I always knitted in class:)
2. I was an exchange student in 1973-74 living in Constantine, Michigan, United States.
3. I have worked as an animal keeper in Helsinki Zoo for 13 years.
4. I am very nervous about performing in public or teaching class, that's why I don't do those things and why I like this blogging thing:)
5. Spring is my favourite time of year, early morning in the forest or by the lake watching the birds.. I have a little hermit in me.
6. My favourite hobby is growing plants: perennials and even trees and roses from seed. To get them to germinate, imagining how they are going to look and see them grow is so very satisfying... but that is also why my garden is a mess and never tidy! I am a plant collector and not a gardener. Last summer I counted 764 different perennial plants, shrub roses and other different species in my garden, most of which I have grown from seed or cutting or exchanged with other plant collectors, and some are still very small, like the two year old rhododendrons I have grown from seed. I'm looking forward to the time when they are big and besides being wonderful evergreen shrubs, they can be used for dyeing:)

7. I am an optimist:) I try to find the good things in everything.

When growing plants this is a necessity: this year there are really a lot of moles in the garden, but instead of thinking of eaten plants in the spring, I hope the tawny owl living near us has now enough moles to eat to grow baby owls like couple of years back. It was such an experience to see and hear the babies beg for food from their parents at nights in June.

Eilen Helen oli merkinnyt minut "tag"illa. Olen oikeasti hyvin kiitollinen huomionosoituksista, mutta tällaiset palkinnot ovat niin hankalia minulle, kun en lue säännöllisesti monia blogeja:( Tagin antaminen eteenpäin on minulle mahdotonta, vaikka ihania blogeja olisi varmasti nettiavaruudessa vaikka kuinka paljon. Ehkä minulla on joskus aikaa lukea niitä enemmän.

Niinpä luettelen nyt vain seitsemän asiaa itsestäni tagin sääntöjen mukaan, ja toivon, että ette olisi kovin vihaisia, kun en jatka ketjua.

1. Lukiossa minulla oli aina jokin kudin tunnilla:)

2. Olin vaihto-oppilaana Yhdysvalloissa 1973-74 Michiganissa

3. Olen ollut 13 vuotta eläintenhoitajana Korkeasaaressa

4. Jännitän esiintymistä ja kurssien pitämistä, siksipä vältänkin niitä ja tämä bloggaus on niin mukavaa:)

5. Kevät on lempivuodenaikani, aikainen aamu metsässä tai järven rannalla katsellen ja kuunnellen lintuja.. minussa elää pieni erakko.

6. Lempiharrastukseni on kasvien kasvattaminen siemestä: perennojen, jopa puiden ja ruusujen. Antaa todella paljon tyydytystä saada kasvit itämään, miettiä millaisia niistä joskus tulee ja sitten katsoa kasvua vuosien kuluessa... mutta siksipä toisaalta puutarhani on yhtä sekasotkua:) Olen kasvifriikki enkä puutarhanhoitaja. Viime kesänä laskin, että puutarhassani on 764 erilaista perennaa, ruusua ja muuta monivuotista puskaa, osa tietysti vielä pieniä, niinkuin kaksi vuotta vanhat rodojen taimet. Odotan aikaa, jolloin rodoni ovat isoja hienoja ikivihreitä puskia, lisäksi niiden lehtiä voisi käyttää värjäykseen:) Suurin osa kasveistani on kasvatettu siemenestä tai pistokkaasta, osa on ihania vaihtareita muilta kasviharrastajilta.

7. Olen optimisti, mitäpä muuta voisinkaan olla kasvieni kanssa. Yritän löytää positiiviset puolet asioissa: tänä vuonna puutarhassa on todella paljon myyriä, mutta sen sijaan että surisin talven aikana syötyjä kasveja, yritän ajatellla lähistöllä asuvaa lehtopöllöä. Jos myyräkannat eivät romahda ennen kevättä, sillä on nyt paljon ruokaa kasvattaa poikasia niinkuin pari vuotta sitten. Pöllönpoikasten seuraaminen alkukesän koivikossa on jotain tosi ihanaa!

Arkipäivien torimyynti loppui kolmisen viikkoa sitten ja kun kesän jäljiltä värjätyt langat olivat tosi vähissä, olenkin nyt viime ajat värjännyt ja pessyt lankoja joka päivä. Lauantai -toreja varten tietysti, mutta eniten siksi, että nyt alkavat uudet kotisivuni olla valmiita ja niiden yhteydessä kauppa, josta voi ostaa lankojani:-) Ihanaa!!
Lankoja on vielä siellä vähän, mutta niitä tulee koko ajan lisää.

Kaikenlaista mietittävää on tietysti tässä yhteydessä tullut vastaan. Meillähän on yksi peruslanka, jota on lapaspaketeissa, ja sukkalanka, mutta kun nyt on lisäksi tullut myös ohuempi lanka, ja jotta erottaisi, mistä langasta milloinkin puhutaan, niille piti saada nimet. Mietimme, mikä kuvastaisi lankaamme ja myös meitä, ja päädyimme mytologissävyisiin metsän oloihin, tulevathan monet värit lankohin juuri metsästä puutarhakasvien lisäksi.

RIIHIVILLA LANGAT

Aarni on pehmeää 2-säikeistä löyhäkierteistä lankaa, tex 200 x 2.

Tämä lanka on mitä parhainta lämpimiin neulepuseroihin, myssyihin, huiveihin tai lapasiin. Se on parhaimmillaan kirjoneuleissa ja sopii myös kangaspuilla tehtäviin shaaleihin. Aikuisten sukkiin se on liian pehmeää, mutta sitä voi käyttää sukkien varsiosaan.Tämä on tätä meidän peruslankaamme, jota on siis lapaspaketeissakin, ja siitä on eniten värejä saatavilla.

Ukko Sukkalanka on 3-säikeistä tiukkakierteistä lankaa, tex 160 x 3, johon on lisätty 15% nailonia antamaan kestävyyttä.

Tästä langasta saat lämpimät saapassukat syksyn sateisiin tai talven pakkasiin. Käsittelemättömässä langassa on tallella lanoliini, joka pitää lämmön tallella teollisia lankoja paremmin.
Miesten sukkiin langanmenekki on n130-140g, naisten sukkiin n120g, riippuen varren pituudesta.
Tästä on nyt kaupassa vain luonnonharmaata väriä, mutta tulossa on värjättyjäkin lankoja:)

Tämä on uutta lankaa myyntiin, ja tästä on toistaiseksi vain neljää lampaan omaa väriä saatavilla, mutta värjään tätäkin jatkossa. Lanka ei ole ihan niin pehmeää kuin Aarni (siinä ei ole yhtään karitsanvillaa joukossa), joten se ei sovellu niin hyvin esim ihoa vasten pidettäviin huiveihin. Mm ohuet villapuserot ovat hyviä tästä langasta.

Värejäni en osaa nimetä, niitä on niin paljon, kun joka värjäyskerralla tulee hiukan erilaista, joten niille värjäyseränumerot ovat varmin tunnistustapa.

Couple of weeks ago our summer season at the market came to end, now only Saturdays are market days and my husband is there then. After the busy season I was running short of my dyed yarns, so now I have dyed almost every day, of course for the Saturday markets, but mostly because now my own web page is about to be ready and with it my SHOP. I am so excited!!!
I don't have as much yarn there yet as I had hoped, but more is coming almost daily, as soon as I have them ready. So, pop in often to see what's new. Also please notice, that I have some yarns only one or two skeins, and sometimes the shop might show that it is still available, and yet it might have been just sold. I hope that won't happen often, but it is possible.

I have had a lot to think about with the shop. One thing was that until now we had only one kind of yarn, and sockyarn, but now there is also a third yarn and we had to figure out names for these different kinds. We wanted the names to be Finnish and reflect our yarn as well as us and so we came up with names that come from Finnish mythology: Aarni, Maahinen and Ukko. As well as being a man's (rare) name, Aarni was thought to be a spirit in the forests, guardian of secrets. Maahinen was thought to be a small creature living in the ground of the forest and Ukko was from heaven. Well,that doesn't relate very well with sock yarn, but ukko is also a synonym of old man, a little old fashioned word and not used much now. To me it brings images of a life in the countryside, where warm socks are needed:)

RIIHIVILLA YARNS

Aarni is soft sport weight yarn with 2 plys and loose twist.
This is our main yarn which you know from the mittens and I have most colors in this yarn.
There are 210 - 220 meters in 100grams (little over 4 ounces)
Gauge recommendation is about 25st/10cm(4 inches)
Needle recommendation is 2,5-3,5mm or according to gauge
Handwash in lukewarm water
This yarn is ideal for sweaters, hats, scarves and mittens, especially in stranded knitting, but it is too soft for adult socks.
Riihivilla mitten kits are from this yarn.

Ukko, yarn for socks is thicker 3-ply yarn with a tight twist and added 15% nailon for more durability.
There is about 180meters in 100grams (little over 4 ounces)
Gauge recommendation is 22st/10cm (4 inces)
Needle recommendation is 3-3,5mm or according to gauge
Handwash in lukewarm water
From this yarn you can make sturdy socks for your boots to keep your feet warm in rainy weather or in freezing winter.
There is natural lanolin left in the wool which keeps warmth better than more processed wools do. Your feet will love it.
This yarn comes now only in natural light grey but I have dyed colors also avaible little by little.
You need about 110-120grams for women's socks and 130-150grams ofr men's socks.
Maahinen is also 2-ply yarn, but it is thinner than Aarni.
There is about 360meters in 100grams (little over 4 ounces)
Gauge recommendation is 32st/10cm (4inches)
Handwash in lukewarm water
This is good yarn for sweaters, hats or mittens, but for scarves it might be a little too harsh.
This yarn comes now only in four natural shades from sheep, but there will also be dyed colors later.

There are small variations in the thicknesses of the yarns, as these are not industrially made yarn. Also skein sizes vary, each skein in my store is weighted by hand before going to store and the price goes according to the weight.

These are the names of the yarn types I have. I can't name all the colors I dye, they are too many, so the dye lot numbers are best way to identify them:)

Mukavien kauppauutisten lisäksi tässä kuva huiveista joita olen kutonut viime viikolla. Molemmat ovat Aarni-lankaa eli tätä meidän peruslankaa. Vihreä samettijaloilla värjättyä ja punainen krapilla värjättyä moniväristä (hmm, en tiedä mikä sana kuvaisi parhaiten tuollaista samaa väriä olevaa kirjavointia). Nämä on tehty isommilla puikoilla mitä käytän lapasten tekemiseen, eli 3mm. Punaisessa silmukoita oli yhteensä 38, vihreässä 40, keskellä 6 silmukan levyinen palmikko. Punaisen pituus on 120cm ja siihen meni lankaa 100g, vihreä on pidempi, 180cm ja sen lankamenekki oli 150g.
Molemmat menivät tänään torille ja punainen löysi uuden omistajan heti päivän ensimmäisestä asiakkaasta:))
In EnglishIn addition to the wonderful news about my shop, here is a picture of the scarves that I knitted last week. Both are from our old Aarni-yarn (same as mittens). Green yarn was dyed with Velvet Pax -mushroom and the reds were dyed with madder (I call that multicolored, because there are different shades even if the same color, but what might be a better word for that color?) I made these with bigger needles, 3mm, than what I use for making mittens. There are 38 stitches in the red scarf and 40st in the green. The cable in the middle is 6st wide. The red scarf is 120cm long and I used 100grams of yarn for it. Green is longer, 180cm and it took 150grams of yarn to make it.
DH took both of them to the market today and the red one was bought right away by todays first client:)) Good thing we photographed them last night.

Natural dyeing filming Kasvivärjäystä Puutarhaunelmiin

Eilen oli se päivä, mitä olin jännittänyt koko alkukesän:
ensi kesän Puutarhaunelmat -televisio-ohjelmaan tehtiin jakso kasvivärjäyksestä meillä. Kerroin kasvivärjäyksestä, juontajan kanssa esikäsittelimme (kuvassa) ja puretimme lankaa ja laitoimme krappivärjäystä kasvihuoneessa, ynnä kaikenlaista muuta. Omasta mielestäni ne kohdat, missä teimme jotain menivät ihan ok, unohdin osittain koko kameran puhuessamme juontajan kanssa, mutta sitten haastatteluosuudessa unohdin varmaan puolet mitä minun piti sanoa! Onneksi filmiä leikataan ja varmasti tekijät saavat siitä televisiokelpoista:) Vaikka kuvauksiin meni koko päivä, niin silti sain kerrotuksi vain murto-osan mielenkiintoisista kasvivärjäykseen liittyvistä jutuista, tämä on niin laaja alue, ja toisaalta kun en ole tottunut esiintymään, niin se vaikutti tietysti eniten. Aina sitä jälkeenpäin huomaa, että olisi pitänyt sanoa noin ja noin tai kertoa jotain jostain jutusta, mutta oleellisimmat asiat kyllä tulivat esille. Ilma oli mukavan puolipilvinen ja kukkiakin oli puutarhassa paljon kukassa:)
Oli aivan juontajan ja kuvaustiimin ansiota, että tunnelma oli leppoisa, enkä lopulta jännittänyt ollenkaan niin paljoa, mitä olin ajatellut etukäteen. Suuret kiitokset heille!

Nyt sitten takaisin normaalivärjäyksiin ja huomenna torille, mieheni on siellä tänään.

Yesterday was the day I had been so nervously waiting all summer:
a Finnish gardening programme Puutarhaunelmat filmed an episode about natural dyeing in our garden. It comes out in television in the beginning of next summer, a year from now.
I talked about natural dyeing, then we prepared yarns for dyeing with the host of the programme (in the picture she is on the left, I am on the right), mordanted the yarns and started dyeing madder in the greenhouse, and many other things. We talked about dyeplants and I showed them the colors that I had gotten. I think the part where we did something and talked went ok, I even forgot that there was camera pointed at us, but when she did the formal interwiew, I think I forgot about half of what I wanted to say! Luckily it wasn't live and they cut it, I am sure they come out with something that can be shown:)
Even though it took all day yesterday, I think I said only a small part of all the interesting things about natural dyeing, there is so much to tell, and I am not used to performing in front of a camera. Afterwards you remember that some things should have been said otherwise or something got left out and so on, you know how it is. The most important things were there though. The weather was good and the flowers were blooming in my garden, so the surroundings were perfect:)
I have to give credit to the host of the programme and the camera team that the atmosphere was relaxed and I wasn't at all as nervous as I thought I would be. They were great!

Now I can go back to my normal routines and dyeings and tomorrow to the market, DH is there today. By the way, he was a great support yesterday.

Why natural dyes Miksi kasvivärjäys

Olen miettinyt, miksi värjään luonnonväreillä, kun olisi paljon helpompaa ja nopeampaa värjätä synteettisillä aineilla, ja varmastikin taloudellisesti kannattavampaa. Natural Dyes keskustelupalstalla joku kysyi asiasta yleisesti ja varmasti voi tuntua oudolta nähdä niin paljon vaivaa, mitä kasvivärjäykseen menee.
Minä olen aina tuntenut vetoa luonnonläheisiin asioihin, aiemmin elämässäni olin töissä eläinten kanssa ja jo ensimmäisestä puutarhastani lähtien olen viljellyt kasveja luonnonmukaisesti, välillä myyntiinkin. Luonto, kasvit ja linnut ja niiden seuraaminen ovat minulle ilon ja voiman lähde.
Villa luonnonmateriaalina ja kasveilla värjääminen tuntuivat alusta lähtien oikeilta asioilta minulle. Tein enimmäiset värjäyskokeiluni 1980-luvun alussa kuusenkävyillä, ja vaikka väristä ei silloin tullutkaan samaa kuin kirjoissa, niin siitä lähtien luonnonväreillä värjääminen oli minun juttuni. Muutamia vuosia myöhemmin löysin sienivärjäyksen, 1990 meille tulivat lampaat, omat villat ja langat.. ja värjättävää riitti:)
Vaikka onkin aina mukava tunne, kun saa värjättyä mielestään onnistuneen värin, niin minulle melkein yhtä tärkeää on se hidas prosessi, miten värit tulevat lankoihin kasveista ja sienistä, keruun, liotusten ja keittämisten jälkeen. Ja miten sopusointuisia värejä ne ovatkaan. Yritän myös värjäyksessä muistaa luonnonmukaisuuden kierrättämällä puretusliemiä ja olen alusta saakka pyrkinyt käyttämään mahdollisimman myrkyttömiä aineita. Kokonaan ilman puretusta en yleensä värjää, koska värien kesto on minulle tärkeää, tietystikin, kun myyn lankoja.

Sen lisäksi, että värjäämällä luonnonväreillä tunnen olevani lähellä luontoa itseään, olen myös osa tuhansia vuosia vanhassa värjäreiden ketjussa. Uskomaton ajatus, että joku on tehnyt ihan samaa vaikka 1000 vuotta sitten: keittänyt kasveja, sekoitellut väripataa, katsellut höyryäviä liemiä ja pessyt lankoja. Ihan niinkuin minä nyt! Ja samalla tavalla miten hän silloin, minäkin voin löytää edelleen uutta - jokainen värjäys on aina uusi mahdollisuuus, värien sävystä ei koskaan voi olla täysin varma. Paitsi siitä, että se on kaunis! Se, että haluaisin aina tietää miksi ja mistä mitäkin tulee, ei vähennä kasvivärjäyksen kiehtovuutta minulle, päinvastoin. Mitä kauemmin tätä teen, sitä enemmän innostun ja sitä enemmän löydän siitä uusia puolia. Sitäpaitsi netti ja värjärikaverit ympäri maailmaa vain pahentavat innostusta:-) Kunnon selitystä otsikon kysymykseen ei tainnut tulla, tämä on vain minun juttuni.

Since last week when someone asked in Natural dyes group, why dye with natural dyes, I have thought about why I do it. It would be faster and easier to dye with synthetic dyes, and definetly more profitable, so why do things the hard way.
I have always been drawn to things close to nature, when I was younger I worked with animals and ever since my first garden, it has been organic gardening for me. I have even grown organic vegetables for sale. Watching plants and birds, all living things, is an inspiration and a source of strength for me. Wool as a natural fiber and plants for dyeing, that has been my thing since the beginning. First time I dyed in the early 1980s, that was with spruce cones, and even thought the color didn't turn up like in my dyebook, I was hooked. Couple of years later I found mushroom dyeing, then in 1990 we took sheep... which meant that then I had wool and yarn as much as I wanted to dye:)
Even though it is a nice feeling when you get a color you really like, I like almost as much the slow process that leads there, extracting color from plants or mushrooms, soaking them, cooking them, and finally dyeing the fibers for a day.. or a week. And how the colors are always in harmony, they are never too bright.
I try to be environmentally friendly with my dyeing by recycling my mordant bath and from the start I have always tried to use only the least harmful mordants. Since I sell my yarn, the lightfastness is important to me and that is why I have to use mordants most of the time.

Besides the fact that dyeing with natural dyes I feel like I am part of the nature, I am also part of a thousands of years old chain of dyers. It is an amazing thought that someone 1000 years ago has done exactly the same thing as I do now: collecting plants, boiling them, watching the color seep out from them and taking to yarn and finally washing the yarn. Just like me now! And just like her, I can still find something new - every dye pot is a possibility for something new, you can never be sure, what color you get.. exept that it is always beautiful. The fact that I (my too curious mind) always want to know why and how I get what I get from every plant or mushroom, doesn't diminish the fascination of natural dyeing to me, rather the opposite. The longer I do this, the more excited by it I get and find more new things to it. My fellow dyers around the world and internet are also bad bad influence:-))
I guess I couldn't give any good answer to the question why natural dyes, this just feels right for me.

Nimestämme About our name

Perjantaina torilla tapasin Susannan, Janetin ja Laurien, jotka olivat menossa Joensuuhun Pohjoismaiseen neulesymposiumiin ja muiden mukavien juttujen lomassa he kysyivät, mitä Riihivilla tarkoittaa. Samaa suomalaisetkin kysyvät välillä, tulevatko langat riihestä tai Riihimäeltä:) No, nimi tulee meidän nimestämme, Riihelä, yhdistettynä sitten lampaanvillaan, josta langat ovat. Kun yritin selittää tätä silloin perjantaina, niin enpä osannutkaan sanoa, mitä riihi olisi englanniksi. En ollut tullut ajatelleeksi tätä tarkemmin ennen.

Friday at the market I met Susanna, Janet and Laurie from Seattle, they were going to Joensuu to Knitting symposium, if you read this, it was so nice to meet you:) It is always nice to meet yarn and dyeing enthusiasts. They asked what the name Riihivilla means and villa means wool so that is simple. Riihi comes from our name Riihelä. Riihi means also something else, it is a drying barn (I also found another word, kiln, in the dictionary for it) used 100 years ago to dry grain. Probably my husband ancestors had a lot to do with drying barn and thus got their name.
Finnish people sometimes ask is our wool dried or made in one of these drying barns, but no, the name Riihivilla comes straight from our last name.

Yesterday I cooked rhubarb leaves, today I am going to dye with them. About that later.
