New Year Uusi vuosi

Uusi vuosi on alkanut erilaisena kuin viime vuosi. Lunta ja pakkasta on ollut viime viikolla aika tavalla, toisin kuin viime talvena, ja talviset kelit näyttävät ainakin ennusteen valossa jatkuvan koko talven. Otin nämä kuvat puutarhasta eilen.

Viime vuosi toi muutenkin kaikenlaisia muutoksia. Kun turistit katosivat ja torikauppa hiljeni, niin nettikauppa yllättäen vilkastui, ja varsinkin suomalaiset löysivät meidät. Olen siitä ikionnellinen teille kaikille! Paljon tuli myös tilauksia vanhoilta ulkomaisilta asiakkailta, ja neulominen onkin ollut sellaista mitä on pystynyt tekemään vaikka olisi ollut ulkonaliikkumiskieltojakin, niinkuin muualla päin maailmaa on ollut koronan takia. Minua itse asiassa korona ei olekaan muuten paljoa haitannut, koska olen voinut värjätä kotona ja nettikaupan ansioista myynti on sujunut postin kautta, ja kontakteja on ollut helppo välttää. Puutarhanhoitokin on ollut mukavaa ja turvallista, ja antanut niin paljon, varsinkin kun koko viime vuosi oli puutarhuroinnin kannalta ihanteellisen pitkä.

Tälle vuodelle tulee myös muutoksia. 

Sanoimme nyt vuodenvaihteesta toripaikkamme lopullisesti irti, kun näyttää siltä, että vielä ensi kesäksi tuskin turistiliikenne tulee palaamaan, ja jatkosta ei tiedä. Eli tästä lähtien myyntimme on vain nettikaupan kautta. Kotona meillä ei ole myyntitiloja eikä myyntiä. Tulevana keväänä pääsen myös eläkkeelle, joten siksikin nettimyynti saa jäädä ainoaksi myyntikanavaksi. Vähennän värjäämistä ja myynnistä tulee pienimuotoisempaa, mutta jatkamme näin, ainakin toistaiseksi:). 

Viime keväänä, kun  tilanne näytti huonolta, niin silloin pelkäsin pahinta, enkä sitten teettänytkään kaikkia niitä villoja langoiksi, mitä olin suunnitellut edellissyksynä. Sitten  nettimyynti kuitenkin alkoi vetää hyvin, ja nyt osa langoista on jo loppunut. Oli vaikea ennakoida kun mikään ei ollut niinkuin ennen, ja lankojen suhteen olisi aina syksyllä tiedettävä seuraavan vuoden menekki, jotta osaa hankkia sopivan määrän hyviä syksyvilloja. En olisi uskonut keväällä miten kivasti langat tekivät kauppansa netin kautta. Veimme uusia villoja kehrättäväksi taas viime marraskuussa, ja saan ne lankoina vasta maalis-huhtikuussa, eli kunnes ne tulevat niin nyt ovat valkoiset ja vaaleanharmaat Aarni-langat ihan lopussa. Muita lampaan värejä vielä riittää toistaiseksi, ja myös värjättyjä lankoja vielä riittää jonkin verran viime kauden värjäyksistä. 

Valoisaa talvea ja hyvää uutta vuotta.

This winter is very different than last winter. Now there is a lot of snow and it's been colder than usually this January. These pictures are from the garden yesterday.

Last year there were a lot of changes. When tourists disappeared and selling at the market stopped, suddenly online selling increased a lot. Especially Finnish knitters found us, and also many old customers from abroad placed orders, which I'm so so grateful! Knitting is something anyone can do even in lockdown, which was how it was or still is in many countries. I am fortunate being able to dye at home and outside, and sell through online shop, so avoiding contacts has been easy for me. Also garden has been my sanctuary, and I love gardening. I can't wait for the next spring.

There will be also changes this year. 

The market will not be back to "normal" even next summer, and no-one knows when it will. We have had to pay monthly rent to keep our place even if we weren't there, and so now we decided to give up our place there for good.    

So, from now on we will sell only through our online shop. Also in early summer this year I will start to get retirement pension. I'm going to dye less, and sell less in the future, but we will continue this way, for the moment.

Last spring when things looked bad, I didn't have all the wool, that was reserved for that year, spun into yarn. Then online selling increased and already now Aarni Natural White and Aarni Natural Light Grey are out of stock. It has been difficult to predict the future when everything has changed, and I only get good wool once a year in the autumn and at that time I have to know how much I will need for next year. So now we have new wool from last autumn in the spinnery being spun and we get those yarns in March or April. Until that, I'm sorry to say that there is no white or light grey Aarni available. There are still other natural colours of the sheep available, and some yarns dyed with natural dyes last season.

Syksyiset Kässämessut netissä 25 - 27.9.2020

 Ensi viikonloppuna on taas netissä Käsityömessut. Virtuaaliset messut alkavat perjantaina klo 12 ja päättyvät sunnuntai-iltana klo 24. Mukana on paljon erilaisia suomalaisia käsityöalan yrittäjiä: asusteita aikuisille ja lapsille, kaikenlaista kotiin, ja käsitöitä tekeville lankoja, kankaita ja muita ompelutarvikkeita. Tosi laaja valikoima. Kässämessujen sivuilla näet kaikki osallistujat joko aakkosjärjestyksessä tai tuoteryhmittäin lueteltuna. Riihivilla on mukana messuilla ja Kässämessujen ajan perjantaista sunnuntaihin nettikaupassani on ilmaiset toimituskulut yli 75€ tilauksille Suomeen, ja laitan myös perjantaina klo 12 tarjoukseen kauppaani joitain värjättyjä lankoja, tarjouskoriin.  Ihan näille messuille ei taida ehtiä, mutta sitten seuraavalla viikolla olisi tulossa myös pitkästä aikaa myyntiin harmaata Hiisi-sukkalankaa lisää, ja laitan sen sitten heti kauppaan, kun saan langat kehräämöltä. Next week end there is a Finnish Autumn Crafts Fair Online. It starts on Friday at noon, and ends on Sunday midnight. There are lot of different kinds of craft makers, from garments for adults or children and materials, yarn, and fabric. Unfortunately this is only in Finnish. The fair web page is kassamessutnetissa.fi . Riihivilla is also there, and I will put some discount yarns to my online shop at noon on Friday. Our sock yarn, Hiisi, has been out of stock now for quite a while, but I will have more of Natural Grey Hiisi next week. Unfortunately not in time for the Fair, but week after that. You all know that I don't dye big amounts of yarn at a time. Often I sell some of the dye lot and end up having only one or two skeins of each log. Now because of the fair I created a Discount Basket in my shop, and put those skeins there. They are 20% off the normal prices.

Spring in the middle of corona Kevättä koronan keskeltä

Kevät on ollut aikainen tänä lumettomana talvena, ja puutarhasta on paljon iloa, kun muuten asiat ovat sekaisin koronaviruksen vuoksi. Me olemme olleet terveitä ainakin toistaiseksi, mutta korona on vaikuttanut ja vaikeuttanut kyllä muuten toimintaamme.

Ensiksikin emme ole olleet torilla maaliskuun puolivälin jälkeen, ja näyttää siltä, että ainakin huhtikuu ja toukokuu pitää olla kotona, mahdollisesti vielä kesäkuukin. Täytyy katsoa asiaa sitä mukaa kun aika kuluu. Vaikka Suomessa purettaisiin rajoituksia alkukesästä (ja tätäkään ei vielä voi tietää), niin kulkevatko risteilyalukset ja onko niillä edes turisteja. Ja milloin edes turistit palaavat. Olen kyllä tiennyt, miten riippuvaisia olemme turisteista, mutta nyt sen huomaan todella konkreettisesti. Jos ei ole turisteja, ei tule kauppaa:(. Torimyynnillä on minulle tosi iso merkitys, ja ajatella: siitä kun sain  torikortin Helsingin Kauppatorille on jo 25 vuotta! Ei tunnu yhtään siltä, että siitä olisi niin pitkä aika. Jos tämä koronaepidemia olisi tullut ensi vuonna, niin olisi ollut helppo ratkaisu lopettaa Riihivilla ja jäädä eläkkeelle, koska vuoden päästä minulla olisi siihen mahdollisuus. Nyt kuitenkin pitäisi vielä jotenkin jatkaa toimintaa ensi vuoteen saakka, mutta ei ole helppoa ilman toria.

Nettikauppa tietysti toimii karanteenienkin keskellä. Värjäyskausi alkaa näihin aikoihin, ja luonnonväriaineita löytyy nettikaupasta, lankojen ja tarvikepakettien lisäksi.
En kuulu varsinaisesti vielä mihinkään riskiryhmään koronan takia, mutta yritämme silti olla aika paljon erossa kontakteista muihin ihmisiin tässä tilanteessa. Siksi postitan tilauksia vain kahdesti viikossa: maanantaina ja keskiviikkona.
Nettikaupassa on myös nyt mahdollisuus ottaa kotiinkuljetus, vaikka se on hiukan kalliimpaa kuin nouto automaatista. Postin hinnat tavallisten pakettien osalta nousivat hiukan huhtikuun alussa, ja niihin tuli tilavuushinnoittelu, mutta Matkahuollon kautta lähetys on hiukan edullisempaa tällä hetkellä. Ulkomaille menevissä tilauksissa on viivettä matkan kulussa, varsinkin niissä tilauksissa, mitkä menevät lentämällä, koska lentoja ei nyt ole niin tiheään kuin tavallisesti. Onneksi kuitenkin nekin lähetykset kulkevat vaikkakin selvästi hitaammin.

Toisaalta tämmöisinäkin aikoina on helppo olla iloinen ympärillä heräävästä luonnosta ja siitä, että on kevät. Muuttolinnut saapuvat, kasvit nousevat maasta, ensimmäiset kukat kukkivat ja kohta saa jo omaa salaattia aikaisesta kylvöksestä kasvihuoneesta. Mikäpä täällä on meidän ollessa, niin kauan kun pysymme terveenä:). Pysytään kaikki turvassa ja terveinä.

Spring has arrived early in this snowless winter, and garden gives me so much pleasure in this otherwise difficult time. We have been well, but coronavirus has affected and made it difficult for our business in other ways.

First, we haven't been at the market in Helsinki at all since mid March, and it looks like we can't go there in April or May either. Even June looks uncertain. No-one knows when this epidemic is over, and when all the restrictions are over. The peak of corona epidemic is predicted to occur here in May, but all is uncertain of course. What happens in the rest of the world also is uncertain. When can the cruse ships come again, and are there any customers for us even if they come.  Our business is so depending on tourists and selling at the market, and I now realize it again. I started at the market 25 years ago this year! It doesn't feel at all like so long ago. If corona epidemic had come next year, it would have been an easy decision to close Riihivilla for good, because a year from now I start to get pension, but now I will have to find a way to continue until  next year. It is not easy without the market, but I hope things will become better during summer, and selling at the market can continue then.

My online shop is open, so that helps a little. There have been many old customers from years ago that have made orders earlier this winter, and I'm so grateful and happy for them. Thank you!
We try to avoid contact with people and going to town at this time, so that is why we ship only twice a week: on Mondays and Wednesdays. Finnish Mail says that there will be delays in shipping abroad, but I'm glad to write that the delay seems not to be very long when shipped to Europe, it is almost normal. However, shipping to outside Europe has taken longer the past month. When it usually takes 10-14 days, it has taken now 20 -25 days. I believe that this is due to not so many planes flying across the ocean at this time. So, even if shipping is slower, it still works, and we can continue to ship to United States or Canada:). UPS is faster, but about twice as expensive. If you want to use UPS as a courier, please write to me and I can find out the exact price.

Despite all the difficulties, it is now spring, and living in the countryside, where I can enjoy the awakening of nature around me and it gives me so much pleasure. Migrating birds are arriving and air is full of their song in the mornings. Plants are coming up, and the first ones are already flowering in the garden and also in the wild, yesterday we went to see flowering Hepaticas in the woods nearby.
Soon I will get my own first lettuce grown in my polytunnel. As long as we stay healthy, life is good:).

Just as I wrote yesterday that mail goes overseas ok, but slower, today April 9th, Finnish Mail says that shipping to United States, Canada and Australia does not go. They say that the situation changes every week, and they try to find planes which go overseas. So it is a bit confusing right now. 
Shipping to Europe goes well with no trouble.

Changes in shipping prices to outside Finland

Tämä on ollut tosi erikoinen talvi. Yllä oleva kuva on viime viikolta, jolloin maahan tuli hento lumipuuteri, ja samaan aikaan jo nyt pähkinäpensaat kukkivat. Viime yönä sade sulatti lumen pois ja nyt näyttää taas enemmän vihreältä, kun ruoho ja sammaleet näkyvät. Tulee varmasti aikainen kevät:).

Torilla on ollut aika sateisia ja tuulisia kelejä, mutta toivotaan, että ilmat hiukan paranisivat tässä kevään myötä. Olen saanut täydennettyä torin värjättyjen lankojen varastoa, ja teen koko ajan kesän torimyyntiä varten lisää valmiiksi.
Nettikauppa toimii kuten ennenkin, ja kotimaan pakettien hinnat ovat pysyneet samoina ainakin toistaiseksi, mutta ulkomaan pakettien hintoihin tuli muutoksia helmikuun alusta. Baltiaan ja Ruotsiin lähetettävien pakettien hinnat laskivat (ainakin toistaiseksi, nimittäin voi olla, että Posti muuttaa niiden hintoja uudelleen keväämmällä, kun se lopettaa edullisen Parcel Connect -palvelun). Toisaalta sitten EU:n ulkopuolelle lähetettävien alle kilon pakettien hinnat nousivat taas reilut n 13%. Viimeisen viiden vuoden aikana niiden postitushinnat ovat kaksinkertaistuneet, ja pieniä tilauksia ei asiakkaiden kerta kaikkiaan kannata tehdä, jos lähetyskulut ovat enemmän kuin itse tuotteet:(.  Harmittaa Euroopassa olevien ei-EU-maiden asiakkaiden puolesta, koska viimeisimmän Postin hinnankorotuksen jälkeen heille menevät paketit maksavat yhtä paljon kuin vaikkapa paketti Australiaan, vaikka matkaa on paljon vähemmän. Tämä on väistämättä näkynyt myös meidän nettikauppamme myynnissä.
Hyvä puoli on, että EU:n ulkopuolelle yli kilon pakettien hinnoissa nousua oli vain ihan vähäsen, ja kannattaakin kerätä vaikka porukka, jolloin saa samaan pakettiin enemmän ja säästää niin postituskuluissa. Kaikissa paketeissa on seuranta ja periaatteessa niiden pitäisi kulkea nopeammassa Priority luokassa.

This has been as strange winter. It has been much warmer than usually, and there has been no snow all winter, except last week one night there was just a touch of white in the morning. The picture above was taken then. Also Common Hazel is already flowering, much earlier than normal. Last night it rained and all white is gone now:).
At the market it has been windy and rainy beginning of the year. Let's hope the weather will get better later in the spring. I have been able to restock yarns to the market and I'm now making more of them to have enough to sell during the summer season.

In the beginning of February Finnish Mail has changed its prices, again. The good news is that shipping to Sweden and Baltic countries, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, the shipping is cheaper now. At least for couple of months because right now I can send with Parcel Connect and Finnish Mail discontinues it later this spring. There will be something to replace it, but I don't know the price yet.

To Europe I ship now with GLS  and their prices are not as high as with Finnish Mail and that is good.

To outside EU the news are not so good. The prices of small parcels under one kilo have gone up about 13%. Shipping prices of smaller parcels have doubled in the last five years! Also now shipping to non-EU countries in Europe like Norway or Switzerland (and next year to UK) costs as much as shipping to anywhere else in the world outside EU.  It doesn't make sense to me that shipping to Norway costs the same as shipping to Australia, but there it is.

The good thing is that the price of bigger parcels, over one kilo, has not gone up hardly at all, and it is almost the same if your parcel weights one kilo or three kilos. So if you can order together with friends you could save a lot in shipping to outside EU.

December yarns Joulukuun langat

Suurin osa luonnonväreillä värjätyistä langoistani menee myyntiin torilla kesän aikana. Monesti myös yksittäiset värjäyserät ovat pieniä, varsinkin värit mitä värjään sienillä tai lähiympäristöstä kerätyillä kasvella, eikä niitä ole riittänyt nettikauppaan.
Nyt ajattelin laittaa myös näitä pienempiä eriä nettikauppaan joulukuun aikana huomisesta alkaen, yksi väri päivässä. Vähän kuin joulukalenterimaisesti:). Kauppaan tulee ensiksi sinisiä, mitä sieltä on puuttunutkin, mutta myöhemmin myös erilaisia sienivärjättyjä lankoja, ja värjäyseriä, joita olen syystä tai toisesta säästellyt enkä ole laittanut aiemmin myyntiin. Suurin osa myyntiin tulevista langoista on Aarnia, mutta myös joitain Velhoja tulee kauppaan.

I sell most of my natural dyed yarns at the market during summer. Many times my dye lots are small, especially those dyed with mushrooms or other local dye sources, and so there haven't been enough of them for the web shop.
Now I had an idea, that in December I will put every day from tomorrow until Christmas one colour a day also to my shop. A bit like Christmas calendar:). First there will be blues which there are not so much right now available in the online shop, but later also different yarns dyed with mushrooms, and dye lots which I have saved, mostly because they were so one-time dye lots dyed with plants or mushrooms which I don't have much. Most of the yarns will be Aarni, but there will also be some new Velho colours.
I will also post here in my blog the yarn of each day.

Cold dyeing with my own madder Hankaluuksia krapin kanssa ja omien krappien kylmävärjäystä

Krapin saamisessa on ollut vaikeuksia koko kevään. Ensin se oli loppunut koko Euroopasta ennenkuin tukku sai sitä kesäkuussa lisää Iranista. Tilasin tietysti heti silloin kesäkuun toisella viikolla ja kuun puolivälissä paketti olikin seurannan mukaan Suomessa. Sitten kuljetusfirman autokuski soitti toiselta puolelta maakuntaa eikä löytänyt meitä. No ei tietenkään kun oli ihan väärällä paikkakunnalla. Paketin piti sitten tulla tänne heti seuraavana päivänä toisen kuskin kyydissä, mutta sitä ei koskaan tullut. Kuljetusfirmalla on ollut samaan aikaan jotain uudistuksia jotka olivat sotkeneet systeemit ja asiakaspalvelu on ollut ihan tukossa. Minäkin olin yrittänyt ottaa yhteyttä heihin viimeiset 10 päivää, mutta sähköposteihin, puhelimeen tai facebookviesteihin ei saanut vastausta. Viimein tänään sain langan päähän asiakaspalvelun ja selvisi, että silloin väärään osoitteeseen pakettia vienyt autokuski ei ollut skannannut sitä takaisin heidän systeemiinsä ja koko paketti oli kateissa. Nyt paketti on löytynyt iltapäivällä ja sen pitäisi olla huomenna täällä. Oikea kovan onnen krappi. Pahoittelut kaikille sitä kaupassani odottaneille, toivottavasti kaikki sujuu huomenna hyvin ja se on minulla.

Alkukesän säät olisivat suosineet krapin ns kylmävärjäystä ulkona tai kasvihuoneessa.
Minulla oli pieni määrä keväällä 2014 kuivaamaani itse kasvattamaani krappia. Se oli neljä vuotta vanhaa, mutta joko maan laadusta tai ilmastosta johtuen krappi ei minulla ole kovin tuottoisa ja kahdesta kasvista tuli silloin 50g kuivattuja juuria. Krapin juurista sanotaan, että niiden olisi hyvä antaa kuivaa useita kuukausia ennen käyttöä ja nämä olivat varmastikin tarpeeksi vanhoja. Kuva niistä on tuossa yllä.
Liotin krapin paloja ensin yön yli, alla olevassa lasipurkissa, ja ne värjäsivät veden heti ihan punaiseksi.

I have had trouble getting madder roots. First they were sold out in Europe and when finally in early June they became available I ordered them right away. The origin of madder roots I buy is from Iran, so the world politics may have had something to do with this. Anyway, madder roots arrived quickly to Finland but then the shipping company tried to deliver them to totally wrong address. At the same time they are having problems with some new systems, so their customer service was always busy and even trying to contact them for more than a week they never answered email, telephone or fb-messages. Finally today I got hold of their customer service, and it turned out that my package has gone lost! Just a moment a go I got a message that the package has been found and should arrive to me tomorrow, after 15 days. What a relief.

Summer weather this year would have been very good to dyeing with madder outside or in my greenhouse, it's been so hot. So, when I didn't have any Iranian madder, I tried to dye in the greenhouse, so called cold dyeing, with my own grown madder. It was a small amount, only 50g, from two four year old plants, harvested in spring 2014. I have read that it would be good to let the roots dry for some time before using them, and these were more than enough old now. A picture of them is  above.
I soaked the root pieces overnight, and the water turned almost immediately dark, picture below.

Lisäsin krapit vesineen isompaan purkkiin, joka sai sitten olla kasvihuoneen lämmössä auringossa. Laitoin liemeen 50 alunalla puretettua lankaa. Kokemukseni mukaan krapilla väristä tulee punaisempi, vähemmän oranssi, jos lanka on puretettu vain alunalla eikä siinä ole mukana viinikiveä. Kokenillilla taas väristä tulee punaisempi eli vähemmän sininen, jos lanka on puretettu sekä alunalla että viinikivellä. Ehkäpä viinikivi muuttaa lankaa vieläkin happamammaksi ja siksi silloin myös keltaiset pigmentit tarttuvat paremmin. Kokenillilla väriliemen on hyvä olla hapan, kun taas krapilla punaisin väri tulee neutraalissa tai lievästi emäksisessä liemessä. Joka tapauksessa lanka alkoi ottaa heti väriä ja jo vuorokauden jälkeen se punersi hyvin. Kuva alla.

I put soaked madder with soaking water to a bigger jar so that there was enough room for the yarn, and added 50g of yarn mordanted with alum, and kept the jar in the greenhouse in full sun. It is my experience that using only alum with madder gives me better reds than if I had used also cream of tartar. On the other hand with cochineal I always use also cream of tartar together with alum to get better reds, not so blueish as I would get with only alum. Of course using vinegar could also help to lower the pH of cochineal bath which helps getting reds, anything which makes the cochineal bath acidic is good while with madder it is better if the bath is neutral or slightly alkaline. Anyway, my yarn started to turn red fast and the picture below is after only one day.

Kolmantena päivänä krappi alkoi käydä, ja sekoittelin lientä aina välillä. Käyminen on ihan normaalia.

On day 3 madder started to ferment, and I stirred it from time to time. Fermentation is normal for madder.

Kuva yllä on langasta kolmantena päivänä ja alla on kuva langasta kun otin sen pois liemestä kymmenentenä päivänä. Väri oli hitusen syventynyt, mutta käytännössä oikeastaan langan olisi voinut jo ottaa pois kolmen neljän päivän jälkeen, koska alkuajasta oli enemmän helteitä ja purkkikin tuli päivisin kuumemmaksi ehkä n 40C. Juhannusviikolla säät viilenivät hiukan ja väri ei siksi syventynyt paljoa. Purkin krappia voi vielä käyttää jälkiväriin ja varmaan kolmanteenkin vaaleampaan.

Oli tosi kiva todeta, että nämä itse kasvatetut olivat aivan yhtä hyviä kuin ostetutkin! Vielä kun saisin ne satoisammiksi. Lämpimimmissä maissa yksi krappi voi tuottaa useita satoja grammoja juuria, kun taas minulla näin ei ole käynyt. Niiden kasvupaikka on ehkä liian hiekkainen ja vähäravinteinen, mutta olen pelännyt, etteivät ne talvehtisi savisemmassa ja ravinteikkaammassa penkissä ja siksi niiden paikaksi tuli kevyin maa mitä puutarhastani löytyy. Täytyy siirtää pari tainta ensi keväänä eri paikkaan ja kokeilla miten ne pärjäisivät muualla puutarhassani. Tosin en koskaan ehtisi kasvattaa itse niin isoja määriä krappia mitä käytän sitä vuosittain, siihen menisi koko puutarhani:),

Picture above is from day 3, and below is a picture of it in day 10 when I took it out and washed it. Color was a little bit more saturated, but practically I could have taken it out of the bath already in day 3 or 4. In the early days weather was hotter and the jar also was maybe 40C. Last week it was less sunny and cooler, so that was maybe the reason why the color didn't deepen more. I can still use the jar for one or two paler colors.

It was really nice to see that also my own grown madder is as good as the one I buy, or even better. It could be more prolific, because I have read that in warmer climate one plant can yield several hundred grams of roots, but here it doesn't. Still, I'm so happy it survives and hasn't died during winter like my Rubia peregrina did. My madder grows in most sandy soil I have in the garden, and maybe I could try it also in more clay soil which has more nutrients, but  in sandy bed there is not fear of waterlogging during winter. However, I could never grow enough of it to use all year around, my garden is not big enough and I use madder a lot:).

Changes in shipping prices in May 2018

Bad news to my customers outside Europe. Finnish mail discontinues Economy shipping in the beginning of May, so in the future all orders from my shop have to be sent in more expensive Priority mail.

This doesn't affect orders sent to Europe, as they have already been in Priority mail in the past, also orders to outside Europe which have been sent as packages with tracking have been in Priority mail, and there will be no significant change in those prices.
This change has most impact to small orders and for instance after May shipping of one mitten kit to the USA or Canada costs 22,50€ (now 15,40€), so the raise is shipping prices is significant!
My shop shows the shipping price when you proceed to the checkout, and if you are planning of buying something in near future, please place your order in April to save in the shipping price.
I am so sorry about this, and there is nothing I can do about it:(

New Year Uusi vuosi

Toivotan kaikille seuraajille hyvää uutta vuotta uudistetun NETTIKAUPAN  keralla. Suomalaisille asiakkaille ostaminen ja maksaminen on nyt entistä helpompaa pankkipainikkeiden kanssa, muutenkin toivottavasti jatkossa kaupasta tulee mobiili-ja tablettiystävällisempi.

Uusi vuosi jatkuu minun osaltani vanhoissa merkeissä, lapasia tai pipoja on puikoilla toria ja uusia lapaspaketteja varten, ja torimyynti on entisellään. Kolmen kuukauden päästä voin taas kylvää väritattaria, ja sitten onkin pian kevät. Morsinkoakin ajattelin kylvää tänä vuonna enemmän kuin ennen,
Mietin juuri, että sininen väri on se, mitä värjään eniten, ja siksi muutin blogin yläpalkinkin siniseksi:) Sininen on hyvin toiveikas väri minusta. Sinistä tarvitaan aina, se on monen ostajan suosikkiväri ja se on myös tosi hyvä pohja vihreille tai violeteille muiden väriaineiden kanssa. Syksyllä vahingossa tuli ruskeaakin yhdistettynä indigoa ja fermentoitua paatsamankuorta, tähtäsin tumman vihreään, mutta ei ruskeakaan ollut hassumpi. Täytyy yrittää onnistunko uudestaan saamaan sitä, näissä kahdella eri kasviväriaineella värjätyillä se ei ole itsestään selvää. Molempien väriaineiden sävyt pitäisi olla juuri samanlaisia, mutta toisaalta itse pidänkin siitä, että lopputulos vaihtelee sävyltään, enkä koskaan lupaa asiakkaille saada täysin samoja värejä uudelleen. Joskus se kyllä onnistuu, muttei ollenkaan aina.
Sienivuosi oli viime vuonna huono, joten sienisinisiä en voi paljoa värjätä, mutta jonkin verran orakkaita on vielä kuivattuna, niistä saan keväällä vähän väriä lankoihin.
Mielenkiintoinen värjäysvuosi on taas edessä!

I wish everyone Happy New Year with a new look in my ON-LINE SHOP. There are some improvements especially for Finnish customers with easier payment methods, but I hope you all find the new shop better in time when it should be also more friendly with tablets and mobiles. Paying from outside Finland goes through Paypal like before.

For me the new year continues the same way as before, knitting mittens and hats in the winter for the market and new mitten patterns for the kits, and selling at the market in the summer, and week-ends in the winter.
In a few months it is time to sow japanese indigo again and soon it is then spring. I'm going to sow also more woad this year.
I was just thinking that I dye blue most of all, that is why I changed the header in my blog also indigo-blue:) I love blue, it is such an upbeat color, and I need it a lot, many customers like blue yarns and I also need it as a base to greens and purples and violets dyed with other natural dyes. Last autumn I even got brown by accident (I was aiming for dark green) with indigo overdyed with fermented buckthorn bark, but it was a nice brown. I'll have to try to see if I can get it again, it is never sure to get the same colors especially when dyed with two natural dyes, but actually I like it when the end result varies, and I never promise to customers to get the exact same shades. Sometimes I manage it but not often.

Last year was too dry for mushrooms so I can't dye much mushroom-blues, but I have some saved dried tooth fungi to dye small amount of yarn with them in the spring (they smell so bad the dyeing needs to be done outside).

It is going to be another interesting dye year ahead!

New yarns in the shop Uusia lankoja kaupassa

Nettikaupassani on nyt ensimmäisiä uusia lankoja tämän kesän värjäyksistä, siniset on värjätty omilla väritattarilla ja vihreässä on lisäksi paatsamanlehtikeltaista. Punaiset on värjätty kasvihuoneessa krapilla kylmävärjäyksenä, vaaleimmassa on lisäksi hiukan kokenillia ja se onkin näiden jälkiväri.

In my online shop there are now first new yarns dyed this summer. Blues were dyed with my own grown japanese indigo, green was also dyed with buckthorn leaves. Reds were cold dyed in my greenhouse with madder, and the palest color there is also some cochineal. 

Shipping abroad before Christmas

The Finnish mail had settle the arguments with it's workers and the strike is fortunately canceled. I will ship three times a week like usually, but keep in mind that the mail is slower before Christmas so it may take a little longer than usually for the parcels to reach you.

New yarns Uusia lankoja

Olen lokakuun aikana värjännyt uusia lankoja kauppaan, ja meillä onkin nyt myynnissä kahta uutta lankalaatua. Meiltä on jo pitkään kyselty luonnonväreillä värjättyä ohuempaa lankaa, ja sitten toisaalta myös täysvillaista sukkalankaa. Molemmat uudet langat ovat kampalankoja, ja ne eivät ole pelkästään suomenlammasta vaan niissä on lisäksi risteytysvilloja. Molemmat langat on tehty Pirtin kehräämössä. Ohuempi lanka on nimeltään Velho ja paksumpi lanka on nimeltään Hiisi. Yllä olevassa kuvassa ylin rivi on Hiisi-lankaa ja kaksi alempaa Velhoa. Tällä hetkellä saatavilla on noita värejä, mutta niinkuin aina, värjäyseräni vaihtelevat ja uusia hiukan erilaisia värejä,ja joskus samojakin, tulee jatkossa.

Velho on siis ohutta, englanniksi sanottaisiin, että se on light fingering weight, mutta en tiedä mikä olisi oikea määritelmä suomeksi. Se soveltuu hyvin huiveihin, mutta myös kaikenlaisiin muihin ohuisiin neuleisiin. Metrejä siinä on 340-350m/100g ja wpi 20-22. Koetilkun tein 2mm puikoilla, mutta omalle löysälle käsialalleni puikot olisivat ehkä saaneet olla vieläkin pienemmät, nyt mallitilkusta tuli minun makuuni hiukan veltto. Päädyin kuitenkin laittamaan puikkosuositukseksi 2- 2,25mm.  Velhoa on aivan ihana värjätä, luonnonvärit oikein hehkuvat siinä, voisi sanoa taianomaisesti niinkuin Velholle kuuluukin :).

Hiisi on sitten taas paksumpaa lankaa, metrejä siinä on n 170m/100g, ja vaikka wpi on 12, kuten Aarnissakin, niin Hiisi on hyvin tiivistä lankaa, sen rinnalla Aarni on ilmavaampaa ja jotenkin pörröisempää. Hiisi onkin tehty tavallista tiukemmalla kierteellä ja sillä on oikein hyvä vetolujuus. Koekäytössä olleet villasukat siitä tehtynä ovat kestäneet yllättävän hyvin, juuri varmaankin tiukan kierteen takia. Neuletiheys Hiidellä on 20s/10cm ja puikkosuositus 3-3,5mm, tietysti riippuen käsialasta. Hiisi-langasta tehdyt sukat ovat siis saapassukkia, ihan ohutta sukkalankaa meillä ei ole. Vaikka teetimme Hiisi-langan sukkalangaksi, niin olen nyt ihastunut siihen ja minusta se on todella hyvää ihan mihin tahansa neuleeseen. Sitä on nopeaa neuloa ja mm palmikot ja muut pintaneuleet tulevat sillä tosi hyvin esille. Haittapuolena tietysti voisi ajatella, että langan menekki on hiukan isompaa, koska siinä ei ole niin paljoa metrejä. Ja myös sitä on ihana värjätä, siinä on hieno kiilto joka tuo luonnonvärit upeasti esille.

Näitä molempia uusia lankoja on nyt kaupassani, enimmäkseen värjättyinä, mutta jatkossa niitä tulee olemaan myös useampina värjäämättöminä lampaanväreinä. Torilla näitä uusia lankoja ei vielä ole, mutta kunhan saan värjättyä niitä lisää, niin sitten myöhemmin tässä kuussa niitä on myös torilla.
Koska meillä on nyt uusi sukkalanka, niin myymme kaupassa vanhan varaston Ukko-sukkalankaa alennuksella loppuun (9€/150g, 6€/100g).

IN ENGLISH
I have been dyeing new yarns for the shop all October, and now there are two new yarn brands in my shop. We have been asked for a long time to have a thinner lace weight yarn, and now we have something for knitters who want thinner yarn. Also we have been asked to have all wool sock yarn, and now we have it. Both new yarns are made from combed wool so they are very smooth and soft, and they are made in Pirtin Kehräämö. The thinner yarn is called Velho (a kind of wizard) and thicker yarns is Hiisi (it is kind of mythical goblin or elf which lives in the forests). These new yarns are not solely Finnsheep wool but there is also wool from crosses with other breeds in them. In the picture above the top row is Hiisi yarn and the two bottom rows are Velho yarns. At the moment those are the available colors, but as always with my yarns, there will be more slightly different colors each time I dye more.

Velho is thin, light fingering weight, almost lace weight. It is good for scarves, but also to other kinds of knitting. It has 340-350meters (380 yards) in 100grams, wpi 20-22. I knitted a sample with 2mm needles but I knit very loose,so to me even smaller needles would have been better. Anyhow I ended recommending needle size 2-2,25mm European for this yarn, but it always depends on your gauge and the project you are knitting. I loved dyeing Velho, the colors shine on it, you could say almost magically:)

Hiisi is heavier weight yarn, worsted weight. It has apprx 170 meters (185 yards) in 100 grams, wpi 12. Even though the wpi is the same as in Aarni, Hiisi is much more dense yarn than Aarni which is more "airy". Hiisi is also made from combed wool and it has a very tight twist. Gauge is 20sts/10cm and needle recommendation 3-3,5mm European. The socks made from Hiisi are sturdy and warm, made to wear in boots. I knitted a pair to try how it wears, and I am very pleased with them. I think the tight twist makes them more durable than other our 100% wool yarns, and even though we had it made for socks, I think it is a very good all-purpose yarn, to knit mittens or sweaters, too. Cables, and panels and other such techniques look very good knitted with this yarn. Hiis has a wonderful lustre which brings out the naturally dyed colors.

I have both of these new yarns now in my shop, mostly naturally dyed colors, but there will be more natural sheep colors also later on.  I don't have these yarns at the market yet, but they will be there also later this month. 
Since we have now this new yarn for socks, I am selling all of my old stock of Ukko (our older sock yarn) with a discount (9€/150g, 6€/100g) in the shop, and when it is sold, we don't have it any more.

Olen saanut vihdoin uusia lankoja nettikauppaan ja lisää tulee tästä lähtien taas syksyn ja talven mittaan. Kuvan siniset on värjätty omilla väritattarilla, vihreät väritattarilla ja piiskuilla tai ahdekaunokeilla ja samoin keltaiset piiskuilla ja ahdekaunokeilla. Punaisin on krapilla värjätty ja oranssi verihelttaseitikillä.

I have now the first new yarns in the online shop this autumn, and there will be more yarns coming during the autumn and winter. The blues in the picture are dyed with my own japanese indigo, greens with japanese indigo and goldenrod or brown knapweed and yellows with goldenrod and brown knapweed. Red is dyed with madder and orange with mushroom Cortinarius semisanguineus.

New shop Uusi kauppa

Viime viikolla ilmeni ongelmia nettikauppani sähköpostien kulussa, ja kävi ilmi, että kaupan rakenteessa oli reikä, jonka korjaaminen olisi ollut hankalaa. Niinpä ystäväni, joka tekee sivut meille, ehdotti uuden kaupan perustamista paremmalle pohjalle ja näin myös saatasiin turvallisemman kaupan lisäksi vielä siitä monipuolisempi ja uudempi.
Tämä uusi kauppa aukeaa ihan kohta! Tästä pääsee uuteen kauppaan, vielä tulee hiukan muutoksia, mutta pääsette jo katselemaan:)
Kauppa on nyt myös suomenkielellä englannin lisäksi, varmaan mukava uudistus suomalaisille:) Kauppa myös laskee postikulut automaattisesti ja enää minun ei tarvitse lähettää ennakkolaskua käsin, vaan kassalla lopuksi asiakas saa valita joko pankkisiirron tai postiennakkomaksun välillä. Edelleen tietysti voi hakea varatut tuotteet torilta ja niin säästyä postikuluilta.
Ainoa harmillinen puoli on, että asiakkaat joutuvat rekisteröitymään uudelleen, kaikki vanhat asiakastiedot katoavat, kun vanha kauppa hävitetään. Olen pahoillani tästä, mutta toivottavasti uusi kauppa korvaa muuten vaivan. Ja kiitos kärsivällisyydestä teille lukijoille ja asiakkaille ja Jannelle kaupan tekemisestä.

Aikamoinen homma on ollut uuden kaupan perustamisessa, ja vieläkin siellä on pieniä puutteita tuotteiden tiedoissa, mutta kaikki myytävät langat ym ovat nyt siellä kuitenkin ja kun tämä on saatu tehtyä, pääsen värjäämään lisää.. jotain uusia lankoja onkin jo värjätty viime viikolla, mutta ne on vielä selvittämättä ja vyyhdittämättä uudelleen:)
Kaiken muun ohella olen neulonut uusia sini-harmaa/ruskea sävyisiä lapasia, ekasta parista ei tullut ihan sellainen kuin halusin, eikä toisestakaan, mutta nyt kolmansista tulee varmaan hyvät. Ensimmäinen versio oli viime lauantaina torilla ja ne löysivät kyllä ehti uudet omistajat, joten ehkä nekin olivat ihan kivat. Eli lähtitulevaisuudessa on sitten myös uusi lapasmalli tulossa, ehkäpä ensi viikolla.

Last week we had trouble with the emails in our shop, and it turned out that there was a failure in the structure of the shop, so my friend who knows more than I do about these kind of things, suggested that we put up a new and better shop. And so we have been doing.
Here you can go and see our new shop, there will be some changes yet, but at least you can go and take a look:)
There are several improvements, the shop is now also in Finnish, which I'm sure the finnish-speaking appreciate:) The shop also adds the shipping cost to your shopping cart automatically, so you see immediately how much the shipping is going to cost. There is also an option to pay directly to our bank account, for Finns and within EU it is a good option, but of course you can pay through Paypal like before. I will still have to write the invoices by hand and send them to you, but I hope that we'll get you an option to go straight to the Paypal site also, after Christmas, at the latest (this could be done right right now, but I have to dye and make more things for the Christmas to sell, so I have more time for that change later).
The only inconvenience is that you will have to register again when you buy, all the old customer records will be destroyed with the old shop. I'm sorry about that, but I hope the new shop will make up to it in other ways. Thank you for your patience, and thanks also Janne, for putting up the new shop.

The new shop has been a lot of work, it has taken almost all my time in the last week, but soon I can get back to my dye pots and will have more new yarns.. actually I have some yarns already dyed before this shop thing, they are just waiting to be reskeined. I have also knitted a new pair of mittens, with blue/grey/brown coloring, but the first pair wasn't exactly how I thought they would be, so I knitted another pair, slightly different, and now I think the right ones would be in-between these two.. so I will have to knit yet another pair:) DH had the first pair at the market last Saturday, and sold them right away.. so I quess they were not so bad after all:)
Anyway, I will have a new mitten pattern and kit perhaps next week.

Knitter's Review

Lyhyt viesti, miksi ei ihan vielä tule kunnon postausta.
Eilen ilmestyneessä amerikkalaisessa online neulelehdessä oli arvostelu meidän langoistamme, täällä, ja se taas on aiheuttanut sen että olen korviani myöten tekemässä vain lisää tarvikepaketteja, kaupasta ovat melkein kaikki langatkin loppu:) Kyllä tämä tästä varmaan tasaantuu, ja kauppaan ainakin on puolivalmiina jo lisää lankoja, täydennän sitä mukaa kun saan valmiiksi. Ja ihan varmasti tulee värjäysjuttujakin tänne vielä:)

Just a short message why I have been so busy. Yesterday there was a Yarn Profile article about our Aarni yarn in Knitter's Review, online-knitting magazine, here. So now I am swamped with orders:) and making kits as much as I can. I have already run out of almost all the dyed yarns in the shop, but I have more half done and I will restock the shop as soon as I can, next week at the latest. So if there is now empty, please pop in after couple of days. I will have more Aarni Bloom selections ready next week and also other selections.
I'll be busy yet in the weekend dyeing more and making packages ready to leave on Monday, but my dyeings and experiments won't stop and Ladka, I was planning to answer your question with pictures here, as soon as I have time.

Arkipäivien torimyynti loppui kolmisen viikkoa sitten ja kun kesän jäljiltä värjätyt langat olivat tosi vähissä, olenkin nyt viime ajat värjännyt ja pessyt lankoja joka päivä. Lauantai -toreja varten tietysti, mutta eniten siksi, että nyt alkavat uudet kotisivuni olla valmiita ja niiden yhteydessä kauppa, josta voi ostaa lankojani:-) Ihanaa!!
Lankoja on vielä siellä vähän, mutta niitä tulee koko ajan lisää.

Kaikenlaista mietittävää on tietysti tässä yhteydessä tullut vastaan. Meillähän on yksi peruslanka, jota on lapaspaketeissa, ja sukkalanka, mutta kun nyt on lisäksi tullut myös ohuempi lanka, ja jotta erottaisi, mistä langasta milloinkin puhutaan, niille piti saada nimet. Mietimme, mikä kuvastaisi lankaamme ja myös meitä, ja päädyimme mytologissävyisiin metsän oloihin, tulevathan monet värit lankohin juuri metsästä puutarhakasvien lisäksi.

RIIHIVILLA LANGAT

Aarni on pehmeää 2-säikeistä löyhäkierteistä lankaa, tex 200 x 2.

Tämä lanka on mitä parhainta lämpimiin neulepuseroihin, myssyihin, huiveihin tai lapasiin. Se on parhaimmillaan kirjoneuleissa ja sopii myös kangaspuilla tehtäviin shaaleihin. Aikuisten sukkiin se on liian pehmeää, mutta sitä voi käyttää sukkien varsiosaan.Tämä on tätä meidän peruslankaamme, jota on siis lapaspaketeissakin, ja siitä on eniten värejä saatavilla.

Ukko Sukkalanka on 3-säikeistä tiukkakierteistä lankaa, tex 160 x 3, johon on lisätty 15% nailonia antamaan kestävyyttä.

Tämä on uutta lankaa myyntiin, ja tästä on toistaiseksi vain neljää lampaan omaa väriä saatavilla, mutta värjään tätäkin jatkossa. Lanka ei ole ihan niin pehmeää kuin Aarni (siinä ei ole yhtään karitsanvillaa joukossa), joten se ei sovellu niin hyvin esim ihoa vasten pidettäviin huiveihin. Mm ohuet villapuserot ovat hyviä tästä langasta.

Värejäni en osaa nimetä, niitä on niin paljon, kun joka värjäyskerralla tulee hiukan erilaista, joten niille värjäyseränumerot ovat varmin tunnistustapa.

Couple of weeks ago our summer season at the market came to end, now only Saturdays are market days and my husband is there then. After the busy season I was running short of my dyed yarns, so now I have dyed almost every day, of course for the Saturday markets, but mostly because now my own web page is about to be ready and with it my SHOP. I am so excited!!!
I don't have as much yarn there yet as I had hoped, but more is coming almost daily, as soon as I have them ready. So, pop in often to see what's new. Also please notice, that I have some yarns only one or two skeins, and sometimes the shop might show that it is still available, and yet it might have been just sold. I hope that won't happen often, but it is possible.

I have had a lot to think about with the shop. One thing was that until now we had only one kind of yarn, and sockyarn, but now there is also a third yarn and we had to figure out names for these different kinds. We wanted the names to be Finnish and reflect our yarn as well as us and so we came up with names that come from Finnish mythology: Aarni, Maahinen and Ukko. As well as being a man's (rare) name, Aarni was thought to be a spirit in the forests, guardian of secrets. Maahinen was thought to be a small creature living in the ground of the forest and Ukko was from heaven. Well,that doesn't relate very well with sock yarn, but ukko is also a synonym of old man, a little old fashioned word and not used much now. To me it brings images of a life in the countryside, where warm socks are needed:)

RIIHIVILLA YARNS

Aarni is soft sport weight yarn with 2 plys and loose twist.
This is our main yarn which you know from the mittens and I have most colors in this yarn.
There are 210 - 220 meters in 100grams (little over 4 ounces)
Gauge recommendation is about 25st/10cm(4 inches)
Needle recommendation is 2,5-3,5mm or according to gauge
Handwash in lukewarm water
This yarn is ideal for sweaters, hats, scarves and mittens, especially in stranded knitting, but it is too soft for adult socks.
Riihivilla mitten kits are from this yarn.

Ukko, yarn for socks is thicker 3-ply yarn with a tight twist and added 15% nailon for more durability.
There is about 180meters in 100grams (little over 4 ounces)
Gauge recommendation is 22st/10cm (4 inces)
Needle recommendation is 3-3,5mm or according to gauge
Handwash in lukewarm water
From this yarn you can make sturdy socks for your boots to keep your feet warm in rainy weather or in freezing winter.
There is natural lanolin left in the wool which keeps warmth better than more processed wools do. Your feet will love it.
This yarn comes now only in natural light grey but I have dyed colors also avaible little by little.
You need about 110-120grams for women's socks and 130-150grams ofr men's socks.
Maahinen is also 2-ply yarn, but it is thinner than Aarni.
There is about 360meters in 100grams (little over 4 ounces)
Gauge recommendation is 32st/10cm (4inches)

This is good yarn for sweaters, hats or mittens, but for scarves it might be a little too harsh.
This yarn comes now only in four natural shades from sheep, but there will also be dyed colors later.

There are small variations in the thicknesses of the yarns, as these are not industrially made yarn. Also skein sizes vary, each skein in my store is weighted by hand before going to store and the price goes according to the weight.

These are the names of the yarn types I have. I can't name all the colors I dye, they are too many, so the dye lot numbers are best way to identify them:)

Mukavien kauppauutisten lisäksi tässä kuva huiveista joita olen kutonut viime viikolla. Molemmat ovat Aarni-lankaa eli tätä meidän peruslankaa. Vihreä samettijaloilla värjättyä ja punainen krapilla värjättyä moniväristä (hmm, en tiedä mikä sana kuvaisi parhaiten tuollaista samaa väriä olevaa kirjavointia). Nämä on tehty isommilla puikoilla mitä käytän lapasten tekemiseen, eli 3mm. Punaisessa silmukoita oli yhteensä 38, vihreässä 40, keskellä 6 silmukan levyinen palmikko. Punaisen pituus on 120cm ja siihen meni lankaa 100g, vihreä on pidempi, 180cm ja sen lankamenekki oli 150g.
Molemmat menivät tänään torille ja punainen löysi uuden omistajan heti päivän ensimmäisestä asiakkaasta:))
In EnglishIn addition to the wonderful news about my shop, here is a picture of the scarves that I knitted last week. Both are from our old Aarni-yarn (same as mittens). Green yarn was dyed with Velvet Pax -mushroom and the reds were dyed with madder (I call that multicolored, because there are different shades even if the same color, but what might be a better word for that color?) I made these with bigger needles, 3mm, than what I use for making mittens. There are 38 stitches in the red scarf and 40st in the green. The cable in the middle is 6st wide. The red scarf is 120cm long and I used 100grams of yarn for it. Green is longer, 180cm and it took 150grams of yarn to make it.
DH took both of them to the market today and the red one was bought right away by todays first client:)) Good thing we photographed them last night.
