New Hiisi yarn and madder dyeing video Uutta Hiisi-lankaa ja krappivärjäysvideo

Edellisessä postauksessa kirjoitin, että sukkalanka ei ehtisi viikonlopuksi, mutta niin vain kuitenkin säkki oli perjantaina noudettavissa postista. Eli sain Hiisi-sukkalangat nettikauppaan juuri sopivasti Kässämessuille.  Lankoja kyllä riittää vielä senkin jälkeen, eli ei huolta. 

Hiisi on hyvin tiukkakierteistä 5-säikeistä kampalankaa, joka kestää yllättävän hyvin sukissa. Paljon paremmin kuin nailonvahvisteiset karstalangat mitä olen kokeillut, ja koska se on täyttä villaa, niin se on hurjan lämmintä. Juuri sopivaa lankaa paksuihin saapassukkiin tai muihin lämpimiin asusteisiin. Kohoneuleissakin se on minusta tosi hyvää eli ei pelkästään sukkalankaa. Värinä on lampaan keskiharmaan ja tummanharman välistä oleva harmaa, hyvin kaunis väri. Nyt kelpaa syksyn tulla.

Last week I wrote that I will have Hiisi sock yarn next week, but I got it already yesterday! It is now in my web shop and just in time for Finnish online craft fair. Not to worry, there will be enough yarn for later also.

Hiisi has very tight twist and it is made from combed long wool, so it last surprisingly well in socks. Much better than other yarns with nailon which I have tried. And because it is 100% wool, it is very warm. It is a sport weight yarn, 5 ply, 12 wpi, and thicker yarn than usually is thought as sock yarn internationally, but it makes wonderful thick socks to wear in your winter boots or in cold autumn rain. Because it is all wool, I think it is also good for knitting cable sweaters and such, not only thick socks. The colour is medium grey natural colour of the sheep, very pretty:). 

Viime kesän helteissä kesäkuussa kuvattiin pieni video krappivärjäyksestä kasvihuoneessa, ja se on nyt tässä. Tuota oranssinpunaista lankaa on myös kaupassani.

Last summer it was hot in June and I dyed with madder in my polytunnel. We made a short video of that dyeing. Text is only in Finnish. It took five days in day temperature of 30°C to get the final colour. I have now that yarn also in my shop.

Viileän ja pitkän kevään jälkeen tällä viikolla tuli kertarysäyksellä kesä. Kylmät yöt ovat ohi ja nyt voisi jo istuttaa väritattaretkin ulos, varmaan teen sen viikonloppuna. Tänään sain myös kehräämöstä marraskuussa viemämme villat lankoina takaisin. Valkoinen Aarni olikin ollut koko kevään ihan lopussa, mutta nyt pääsen taas värjäämään myös valkoiselle pohjalle ja nyt sitä on myös kaupassa myynnissä.

Aika paljon värjään harmaalle langalle, mutta on joitakin värejä, jotka vaan täytyy värjätä valkoiselle, että niistä tulee sopivat tarvikepaketteihin. Täytyy heti huomenna laittaa puretuspata porisemaan:).

It has been a cool May until this week when the weather warmed up and after a long spring summer is suddenly here. Cold nights are over and now I can plant my japanese indigo outside, I will do it this week end. 

Today we got yarns from wool which we took to the spinnery last November, and now there is again more white Aarni. It was out of stock all spring, but now I added some to the shop right away, and now I also can start to dye it. Though I dye quite a lot on natural grey yarn, there are some colours for the kits that need to be dyed on white base yarn. And if I do experiments, it is better to use white yarn, so I'm happy to have more of it now. I will have to start to mordanting tomorrow:).

The first week-end in June there is again Finnish online Craft Fair, and we are taking part in it.

Wool for next year Villaa ensi vuodeksi

Tänään kävimme hakemassa villaa ensi vuoden tarpeisiin. Käyttämämme villa tulee suomenlampaista Ulle ja Sebastian Nurmen luomutilalta Raaseporista. Tilalla on omat nettisivut, Bovik  ja he myyvät suoraan  karitsanlihaa, sekä myös kyyttö-naudanlihaa. Kannattaa ottaa yhteyttä, mikäli hyvä liha kiinnostaa, yhteystiedot löytyvät heidän nettisivuiltaan. Kuvat lampaista on otettu kännykällä, koska oikea kamera ei sattunut olemaan mukana, mutta näiden emolampaiden villoista kuitenkin tulee meidän lankamme:).
Seuraavaksi lajittelen villat sen mukaan minkälaista lankaa mistäkin säkistä tehdään, ja sitten viemme ne Pirtin kehräämöön, jossa ne kehrätään talven aikana meille langaksi.

Today we went to pick up wool. The wool we use for our yarn comes  from Finnsheep from Ulle and Sebastian Nurmi's organic farm in Raasepori. They have their own web site where you can read more about them and their sheep and cattle, and look at the photo gallery of the work at the farm. The farm is called Bovik. They sell organic grown lamb meat, and beef from Finnish landrace called kyyttö, so if you live in Finland and are interested in tasty organic meat, please contact them through their web site.
My pictures of sheep are not good, they were taken with my husbands cell phone (we didn't have camera with us), but I wanted you to see those lovely Finnsheep which produce wool to Riihivilla yarn.
Next I sort out the wool and decide which kind of yarn is made from each sack, and then we take the wool to spinnery Pirtin Kehräämö where they spin the yarn for us during this winter. As you can see from the picture below, it is already winter here.

New yarns in the shop Uusia lankoja kaupassa

Nettikaupassani on nyt ensimmäisiä uusia lankoja tämän kesän värjäyksistä, siniset on värjätty omilla väritattarilla ja vihreässä on lisäksi paatsamanlehtikeltaista. Punaiset on värjätty kasvihuoneessa krapilla kylmävärjäyksenä, vaaleimmassa on lisäksi hiukan kokenillia ja se onkin näiden jälkiväri.

In my online shop there are now first new yarns dyed this summer. Blues were dyed with my own grown japanese indigo, green was also dyed with buckthorn leaves. Reds were cold dyed in my greenhouse with madder, and the palest color there is also some cochineal.

Ystäväni Marjatta oli tehnyt minulle lämpimän peiton pienistä pätkistä tähteeksi jääneistä luonnonväreillä värjätyistä langoistani. Onpa hieno, eikö olekin:)

My friend Marjatta had made a blanket for me from many small bits of my left over yarns, all dyed with natural dyes. Isnt't is great and warm, too:)

New yarns Uusia lankoja

Olen lokakuun aikana värjännyt uusia lankoja kauppaan, ja meillä onkin nyt myynnissä kahta uutta lankalaatua. Meiltä on jo pitkään kyselty luonnonväreillä värjättyä ohuempaa lankaa, ja sitten toisaalta myös täysvillaista sukkalankaa. Molemmat uudet langat ovat kampalankoja, ja ne eivät ole pelkästään suomenlammasta vaan niissä on lisäksi risteytysvilloja. Molemmat langat on tehty Pirtin kehräämössä. Ohuempi lanka on nimeltään Velho ja paksumpi lanka on nimeltään Hiisi. Yllä olevassa kuvassa ylin rivi on Hiisi-lankaa ja kaksi alempaa Velhoa. Tällä hetkellä saatavilla on noita värejä, mutta niinkuin aina, värjäyseräni vaihtelevat ja uusia hiukan erilaisia värejä,ja joskus samojakin, tulee jatkossa.

Velho on siis ohutta, englanniksi sanottaisiin, että se on light fingering weight, mutta en tiedä mikä olisi oikea määritelmä suomeksi. Se soveltuu hyvin huiveihin, mutta myös kaikenlaisiin muihin ohuisiin neuleisiin. Metrejä siinä on 340-350m/100g ja wpi 20-22. Koetilkun tein 2mm puikoilla, mutta omalle löysälle käsialalleni puikot olisivat ehkä saaneet olla vieläkin pienemmät, nyt mallitilkusta tuli minun makuuni hiukan veltto. Päädyin kuitenkin laittamaan puikkosuositukseksi 2- 2,25mm.  Velhoa on aivan ihana värjätä, luonnonvärit oikein hehkuvat siinä, voisi sanoa taianomaisesti niinkuin Velholle kuuluukin :).

Hiisi on sitten taas paksumpaa lankaa, metrejä siinä on n 170m/100g, ja vaikka wpi on 12, kuten Aarnissakin, niin Hiisi on hyvin tiivistä lankaa, sen rinnalla Aarni on ilmavaampaa ja jotenkin pörröisempää. Hiisi onkin tehty tavallista tiukemmalla kierteellä ja sillä on oikein hyvä vetolujuus. Koekäytössä olleet villasukat siitä tehtynä ovat kestäneet yllättävän hyvin, juuri varmaankin tiukan kierteen takia. Neuletiheys Hiidellä on 20s/10cm ja puikkosuositus 3-3,5mm, tietysti riippuen käsialasta. Hiisi-langasta tehdyt sukat ovat siis saapassukkia, ihan ohutta sukkalankaa meillä ei ole. Vaikka teetimme Hiisi-langan sukkalangaksi, niin olen nyt ihastunut siihen ja minusta se on todella hyvää ihan mihin tahansa neuleeseen. Sitä on nopeaa neuloa ja mm palmikot ja muut pintaneuleet tulevat sillä tosi hyvin esille. Haittapuolena tietysti voisi ajatella, että langan menekki on hiukan isompaa, koska siinä ei ole niin paljoa metrejä. Ja myös sitä on ihana värjätä, siinä on hieno kiilto joka tuo luonnonvärit upeasti esille.

Näitä molempia uusia lankoja on nyt kaupassani, enimmäkseen värjättyinä, mutta jatkossa niitä tulee olemaan myös useampina värjäämättöminä lampaanväreinä. Torilla näitä uusia lankoja ei vielä ole, mutta kunhan saan värjättyä niitä lisää, niin sitten myöhemmin tässä kuussa niitä on myös torilla.
Koska meillä on nyt uusi sukkalanka, niin myymme kaupassa vanhan varaston Ukko-sukkalankaa alennuksella loppuun (9€/150g, 6€/100g).

I have been dyeing new yarns for the shop all October, and now there are two new yarn brands in my shop. We have been asked for a long time to have a thinner lace weight yarn, and now we have something for knitters who want thinner yarn. Also we have been asked to have all wool sock yarn, and now we have it. Both new yarns are made from combed wool so they are very smooth and soft, and they are made in Pirtin Kehräämö. The thinner yarn is called Velho (a kind of wizard) and thicker yarns is Hiisi (it is kind of mythical goblin or elf which lives in the forests). These new yarns are not solely Finnsheep wool but there is also wool from crosses with other breeds in them. In the picture above the top row is Hiisi yarn and the two bottom rows are Velho yarns. At the moment those are the available colors, but as always with my yarns, there will be more slightly different colors each time I dye more.

Velho is thin, light fingering weight, almost lace weight. It is good for scarves, but also to other kinds of knitting. It has 340-350meters (380 yards) in 100grams, wpi 20-22. I knitted a sample with 2mm needles but I knit very loose,so to me even smaller needles would have been better. Anyhow I ended recommending needle size 2-2,25mm European for this yarn, but it always depends on your gauge and the project you are knitting. I loved dyeing Velho, the colors shine on it, you could say almost magically:)

Hiisi is heavier weight yarn, worsted weight. It has apprx 170 meters (185 yards) in 100 grams, wpi 12. Even though the wpi is the same as in Aarni, Hiisi is much more dense yarn than Aarni which is more "airy". Hiisi is also made from combed wool and it has a very tight twist. Gauge is 20sts/10cm and needle recommendation 3-3,5mm European. The socks made from Hiisi are sturdy and warm, made to wear in boots. I knitted a pair to try how it wears, and I am very pleased with them. I think the tight twist makes them more durable than other our 100% wool yarns, and even though we had it made for socks, I think it is a very good all-purpose yarn, to knit mittens or sweaters, too. Cables, and panels and other such techniques look very good knitted with this yarn. Hiis has a wonderful lustre which brings out the naturally dyed colors.

I have both of these new yarns now in my shop, mostly naturally dyed colors, but there will be more natural sheep colors also later on.  I don't have these yarns at the market yet, but they will be there also later this month. 
Since we have now this new yarn for socks, I am selling all of my old stock of Ukko (our older sock yarn) with a discount (9€/150g, 6€/100g) in the shop, and when it is sold, we don't have it any more.

New yarns in the shop Uusia lankoja nettikaupassa

Olen saanut vihdoin uusia lankoja nettikauppaan ja lisää tulee tästä lähtien taas syksyn ja talven mittaan. Kuvan siniset on värjätty omilla väritattarilla, vihreät väritattarilla ja piiskuilla tai ahdekaunokeilla ja samoin keltaiset piiskuilla ja ahdekaunokeilla. Punaisin on krapilla värjätty ja oranssi verihelttaseitikillä.

I have now the first new yarns in the online shop this autumn, and there will be more yarns coming during the autumn and winter. The blues in the picture are dyed with my own japanese indigo, greens with japanese indigo and goldenrod or brown knapweed and yellows with goldenrod and brown knapweed. Red is dyed with madder and orange with mushroom Cortinarius semisanguineus.

New Natural Variegated Grey Uusi harmaa sävylanka

Viime viikolla saimme kehräämöstä satsin uusia lankoja, kehrätty villoista mitä veimme sinne alkutalvesta. Lisää Aarnia ja vähän Maahista, ja sitten myös yksi erä vaalean harmaata sukkalanka Ukkoa. Tosin tästä erästä tuli aika paljon vaaleampaa, mitä meillä oli aiemmin, mutta lisäksi myös värjään sitä heti kun ehdin.
Uutena lankana teetimme Aarniin liukuvaa sävylankaa, missä väri vaihtuu luonnon vaalean harmaasta tummaan harmaaseen ja takaisin. Tein tästä langasta heti pipon, mistä näkee miten väri vaihtuu. Tämmöistä lankaa meillä on ollut aiemminkin ja siitä tulee mm tosi kivoja pitkiä huiveja. Lisäksi aion värjätä sitä, itse asiassa ensimmäiset erät on jo puretettunakin, joten varmaan ennen juhannusta saan sitä kauppaan värjättynä.
Nyt kuitenkin kaupassa on siis jo tätä luonnonharmaata sävylankaa ja vaalean harmaata Ukkoa, samoin molempia löytyy torilta. Molemmat langat ovat n 150g vyyhdeissä, mikä määrä Ukkoa riittää miesten sukkiin ja Aarnia vaikkapa pitkään huiviin.
Ei muuten uskoisi miten kauppa käy villalangalle torilla, vaikka on näin kovat helteet, hyvä vaan:)

IN ENGLISH
Last week we got new yarns from the spinnery, these were spun from the wools we took there late last autumn. More Aarni and a little bit of Maahinen, also a batch of very light grey sock yarn Ukko (which is thick yarn). It turned out lighter grey than we had previously, but I will dye it.
There is now a new colorway in Aarni, natural variegated grey, where the color changes from light grey to dark grey and back. I already knitted a hat out of this yarn, so you can see how the color changes. We have had this kind of yarn earlier, and you can knit very nice long scarves from it, or hats, or sweaters:) I'm going to dye it, too, and I already have the first yarns mordanted, so that I think I will have it dyed in the shop later in June. Both Ukko and Variegated Aarni are 150gram skeins.
Now you can find light grey Ukko and new natural variegated Aarni in my shop, and we have both yarns at the market, too. The weather has been unbelievable (considering it is only the beginning of June) hot here now, 25°C or more every day, and it is hard to believe that people are buying wool yarn at the market in this heat, but lucky for us, they do:)

Knitter's Review

Eilen ilmestyneessä amerikkalaisessa nettineulelehdessä Knitter's Review oli uudistettu arvostelu meistä ja  Aarni-langastamme. Olen tosi imarreltu ja onnellinen!
Ei ole vaikea arvata mitä teen lähipäivät: pakkaan tarvikepaketteja ja lähteviä lähetyksiä ja samalla pitää valmistella uusia lankoja värjäykseen.
Tästä syystä mieheni ei ole huomenna lauantaina torilla,  vaan seuraavan kerran sitten viikon päästä.

Yesterday came out Knitter's Review re-running an updated review of us and our Aarni. I am so flattered and happy:) Thank you Clara!
Guess what I am very busy doing next few days: making new kits and packing leaving orders:) And at the same time I have to prepare new yarns for the dyepots to get more colors to the shop. Please be patient if my stock seems to be running low.
Because of this, DH will not be at the market tomorrow.

Some new yarns Uusia lankoja

Tästä aika kivasti onnistunutta sukkalankaa. Olin ensin värjännyt jo syksyllä puolet vyyhdeistä vaalean siniseksi indigolla. Seuraavaksi puretin vyyhdit alunalla ja viinikivellä ja värjäsin puolet sinisestä ja puolet värjäämättömästä osasta keltaista antavalla raparperinjuurella. Sitten puolet vyyhdeistä oli krapin jälkiliemessä ja lopulta kokenilliliemessä. Näin värjätessä väristä ei tule kirkas, kun eri sävyt sekoittuvat, mutta minä pidän tästä:)

I like these new skeins of sockyarn. Last autumn I had dyed half of these five skeins first light blue with indigo. Now I mordanted them with alum and cream of tartar, and dyed part of the skeins with rhubarb root which gives yellow. Then next another part of the skeins went to afterbath of madder and finally to cochineal bath. The colors mix with each other and the result is not bright pure colors but a mixture, which I like more:)

Edelliset värjätyt sukkalangat olivat vielä viime vuotisia, jotka ovat hiukan paksumpia, kuin tammikuussa saamani uusi kehruuerä sukkalankaa, nykyinen Ukko.

Ylläolevassa kuvassa näkyy eri Riihivilla- lankojen paksuus verrattuna toisiinsa. Alin lanka on paksua uutta lankaa, jota on vasta tuo yksi väri, se on koe-erä ja täytyy miettiä, teetänkö sitä lisää jatkossa. Riippuu siitä, millaista lankaa halutaan.

Nyt se on kaksi -säikeistä, wpi 9, n140-145m/100g. Itse neulon sitä 4,5mm puikoilla, jolloin neuletiheys on 15s/10cm.

Ukko näyttää kuvassa ohuemmalta kuin Aarni, mutta alakuvassa näkyy miten paljon tiukempikierteistä Ukko on. Muita tietoja langoistamme löytyy kotisivuilta täältä.

The multicolored sockyarns above are from older spinning lot from last autumn, in January I got new yarns and now Ukko is a little thinner. In the picture above you can see how my yarns are compared to each other. The bulkier yarn in the bottom without any name is new. I have now only that one natural color of it and I am not sure if I am going to have more of it spun, it depends how you like it, if it should be thicker.. thinner.. or something else.

It is now two ply, wpi 9, 140-145meters in 100grams. I knit it with 4,5mm needles and my gauge was 15 sts/10cm (4 inches)

Ukko looks thinner than Aarni in the picture, but in the bottom picture you can see better what the difference is, Ukko is much more tighter spun. More information about Maahinen, Aarni and Ukko are in my homepage, here.

Memories of late summer Loppukesän värjäysmuistoja

Kanadanpiiskut (Solidago canadensis) mainitaan hyväksi keltaisen värin lähteeksi. Piiskuja on käytetty värjäykseen Euroopassakin jo 1700-luvun lopulla ja niiden värjäysominaisuuksia ja viljelyä on tutkittu paljon 1990-luvun lopulla Saksassa ja Ranskassa. Piiskujen sisältämiä väriaineita ovat mm quercetin ja erityisen tärkeä isoquercitrin, joka Cardonin mukaan on luteoliinin lisäksi yksi kestävimpiä keltaisen värin lähteitä. Quercitriniä on piiskujen lisäksi myös mm mustatammen kuoressa (black oak bark), mulperipuun (Morus alban) lehdissä ja kanervakasveissa (Caluna vulgaris).Ensin mainittu quercetin on taas hyvin yleinen monissa kasveissa ja heikompi valonkestoltaan.

Canadian goldenrods (Solidago canadensis) are mentioned in dye litterature to be a good source of yellow color. Goldenrods have been used for dyeing even in Europe since the end of 1800th century and their dyeing properties and cultivation has been studied in Germany and France in the end of 1990s. Some of the dyestuffs in goldenrods are quercetin and most importantly isoquercitrin, which according to Cardon is one of the most lightfast yellow dyestuff besides luteolin. Besides goldenrod quercitrin is found in black oak bark, leaves of mulberry (Morus alba) and in heathers (Calluna vulgaris). Quercetin,which is found in many common plants, is not so good when it comes to lightfastness.

Minulla kasvaa äidiltäni saamaani vanhaa piiskua, josta en ole varma onko se kanadanpiiskua vaiko isopiiskua (Solidago gigantea), johon sen tuntomerkit viittaavat. Se on hyvin myöhäinen, kukkii vasta lokakuussa ja minun korkuiseni. Se ei ehdi tehdä siementä, mutta leviää kyllä juuresta, ja jos sen on jonnekin istuttanut, on sitä vaikea kitkeä pois. Se on kaunis loppusyksyn kukkija, joka ei pienistä halloista piittaa. Alempi kuva on otettu äitini puutarhasta lokakuun toisella viikolla.

In my garden I have old goldenrod that I have gotten from my mother. I am not sure if it is canadian goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) or giant goldenrod (Solidago gigantea). It is a very late bloomer, it's flowers open here in the beginning of October and it is very tall, about my height (1,70m). It doesn't set seeds but it spreads from root and if you have planted it somewhere it is there forever:) It is a beautiful late autumn bloomer which doesn't mind small frosts. The picture below is from my mother's garden in the second week of October.

Leikkasin tämän korkean piiskun kukkivat latvat ja hiukan vartta värjäykseen. Silppusin ne paloiksi, kaadoin kiehuvaa vettä päälle ja jätin muhimaan. Oli kaikenlaisia kiireitä ja niinpä piiskut saivat olla kuistilla toista viikkoa ennenkuin värjäsin niillä. Seisottamisen aikana jo liemi oli muuttunut heleän keltaiseksi, mutta keitin kasveja vielä tunnin verran ennen siivilöintiä. Käytin n 700g kukkalatvoja/100g lankaa. Alunalla ja viinikivellä värjätylle langalle väri tarttui kauniin keltaisena tunnin värjäyksen jälkeen ja liemestä tuli vielä vaaleampaa jälkiväriäkin. Kuvassa keskellä oleva väri on värjätty harmaalle langalle samoin alunaa ja viinikiveä puretukseen käyttäen. Osan langoista värjäsin sitten indigolla, jolloin sain kaunista vihreää.

Minusta tuntuu, että monilla kasveilla värjätessä, varsinkin keltaista, seisottaminen ja kasvien "käyttäminen" lisää värin saantoa. Sitä paitsi siinä on se etu, että värjäyksen voi tehdä silloin kun parhaiten ehtii:)

I used flowertops and about third of the stem (where there was more leaves) of this goldenrod for dyeing. I cut them to small pieces, poured boiling water over them and left to ferment. I was busy with something else and so they were in my porch fermenting for more than a week. During that time the liquid had turned to nice yellow, but I simmered the plants for one hour nevetherless. I used 700 grams of fresh flowertops for 100 grams of yarn and got nice bright yellows to yarn that I had premordanted with alum and cream of tartar. The same bath gave also paler yellow in the afterbath. In the picture below the color in the middle was dyed on natural grey yarn which makes the color seem green, even though it really is the same yellow as in the yarn on the right (mordant alum and cream of tartar). The yarn on the left was then overdyed with indigo which gave beautiful green.

I think that with many plants, especially those that give yellow, it is useful to let the bath ferment. They seem to yield more color that way. Besides my old late goldenrod, I have one shorter canadian goldenrod hybrid, which I had bought year ago. I flowered already in the beginning of August and last summer I didn't have heart to cut it for dyeing. I had thought to divide it next spring, but when I now looked at all the seeds it had produced, I am sure there is no need to divide it. If all those seeds germinate in my flowerbeds, uh, I'm not sure if I am happy or not. So next year I am sure to cut the flowers of that goldenrod for dyeing:)

Piiskujen lisäksi oli syksyllä värjänyt myös astereilla, ne antoivat hyvin samantyyppistä keltaista kuin piiskutkin. Niiden väriaineista en ollut löytänyt tietoa:(

Eniten minulla kasvaa vanhaa pienikukkasellista pajuasteria (Aster x salignus) ja kun se on kova leviämään, niin mikäpä olisi parempaa hyötykäyttöä sille kuin värjääminen. Pidän siitä leviämisestä huolimatta, se ei ole ronkeli kasvupaikan suhteen ja perhoset pitävät siitä, niinkuin myös kerrotusta punaisesta asteristani.

This autumn I have also dyed with my different asters, and they gave me same kind of yellows as goldenrods. I haven't found any information about the dyestuffs they contain:(

I have an old small-flowered old aster (Aster x salignus). It spreads so much that most gardeners wouldn't like it, but what would be better for a dyeplant:) I like it a lot, it grows just about anywhere and butterflies favor it, like the other redder aster I have (bottom picture).

Old madder Vanhaa krappia

Keräsin viime syksynä kasvihuoneessa käytetyt krapit talteen, vaikka kaadoin liemet pois. Käytetyt krapit olivat talven ulkorakennuksessa, ja jäätyivätkin. Keväällä ne sitten taas sulivat ja alkoivat käydä hitaasti kuplien, juuren palat erottuivat kuitenkin vielä mössöstä, jonka väri oli kauniin karmiininpunaista. Otin krappimössöstä vajaan ämpärillisen ja kaadoin pataan lisäten vettä ja 400g valkoista alunapuretettua lankaa. Annoin liemen seistä ensin muutaman tunnin, jonka jälkeen nostin hitaasti lämmön n70C, josta lämpö sitten hitaasti laski seuraavaan päivään, jolloin oltin langat ylös. Ne olivatkin värjääntyneet yllättävän punaiseksi (ylempi vyyhti 1930), vaikka silloin viime kesänä luulin jo kaiken värin irronneen juurenpaloista. Ainakin viimeisin värjäys niillä silloin jäi melko vaaleaksi.
Liemi oli edelleen aika tummaa, joten laitoin lisää lankaa 500g, myös valkoista alunapuretettua, värjäten samoin kuin ensimmäisen kerran ja tuloksena oli alempi väri, 1931. Ero näiden kahden välillä ei ole suuri, mutta ensimmäinen on oranssimpi ja tummempi kuin jälkimmäinen.
Liemeen meni vielä 500g lankaa, josta tuli sitten aika vaaleaa, hyvää pohjaväriä moniväriseksi langaksi.

Eli ei kannata heittää pois käytettyjä krappeja, niistä irtoaa yllättävän paljon väriä vielä seisottamisen jälkeen:)
Ilmat ovat olleet aika viileitä, mutta olen jo aloittanut uuden värjäyskauden krapilla kasvihuoneessa, siitä lisää myöhemmin. Indigofermentoimisen kanssa odotan, jos vaikka vielä yötkin lämpenisivät kunnolla... edes muutamaksi viikoksi tänäkin kesänä.

Last fall I collected all the madder root pieces that I had used for dyeing in the greenhouse even though I thought they were already exhausted, and the last dyeing then was quite pale. They were in a big bucket in the shed and froze for some time during winter, but when the spring came they started to ferment, or at least I think so, there were bubbles. The color of the madder pieces was lovely dark red, not at all orange.
I took a bucketfull of these root pieces, put it in my dye pot, added more warm water and 400grams of white alum mordanted yarn. I let them soak for couple of hours before raising the temperature slowly to 70C, and then let it cool again slowly until next day. The yarns came out nice orangey red, stronger than I expected, the upper skein in the picture, no 1930.
So then I put more yarn to the pot, 500grams, and dyed the same way as with the first yarns. These came out little lighter color and not orange in them, the lower yarn, no 1931. In the picture the difference doesn't show as in reality.
I still dyed 500grams of yarn with the same madder, but now the color was paler, a good color as a base for multicolored yarns:)

So, from now on, I'll save all the madder pieces, they contain surprisingly much dye and after soaking and possibly fermenting, more dye comes available.
It has been unusually cold summer here so far (just 20C or less at daytime and at nights around 10C), but I have started my madder pots in the greenhouse, more about that later. With indigo fermenting I am still waiting for warmer days and nights...

Dye plants and madder yarn Värikasveja ja krappilankaa

Nyt alkaa voida istuttaa taimia jo ulos, kun ilmat ovat lämmenneet. Kuvassa yllä valmiita taimia, oikealla morsinkoa (Isatis tinctoria)ja vasemmassa laatikossa japanilaista indigoa (Polygonum tinctoria), vai pitäisikö sitä kutsua suomeksi väritattareksi.
Morsingon siemenet olivat ainakin viisi vuotta vanhoja ja hiukan epäilytti niiden itävyys, mutta tarpeeksi suuri osa niistä iti ihan hyvin. Ne oli kylvetty 29.3 kylmään kasvihuoneeseen ja itäminen kesti n kolme viikkoa. Samaan aikaan kylvin myös krappia, sekin oli hidas itäjä, aikaa kului lähes kuukausi. Väritatar oli kylvetty 6.4 ja se iti kuudessa päivässä eli tosi nopeasti:)
Taimet oli sitten koulittu omiin purkkeihinsa 7.5 ja nyt odottaa maahan istutus.
Olisikohan väritatarta pitänyt latvoa, sen tamet näyttävät hiukan honteloilta? Toisaalta lehtihangoista näyttää tulevan itseksenkin uutta kasvua.
Väritattaren viljelysta Japanissa löytyy englanniksi juttua mm täältä ja morsingon viljelykokemuksia Suomesta Maatalouden tutkimuslaitoksen kokeista täältä. Morsingon olisi voinut kylvää suoraan maahankin, mutta minulle taimesta laittaminen on helpompaa. Ei tarvitse pelätä pienten alkujen jäävän rikkaruohojen jalkoihin:) Myöskin kirpat syövät mielellään morsingon lehtiä, joten harsolla suojaaminen on aluksi hyvä ajatus, jos kylvää suoraan.

Olen myös värjännyt taas hiukan lisää krapilla, 1922 on värjätty harmaalle langalle ja sitä on n 700g. No 1923 on yhdistelmä raparperinjuurella värjättyä keltaista ja edellisen krapin ensimmäinen jälkiväri, tätäkin on n 700g ja toista jälkiväriä (pelkkä krappi) 1924 on 300g.
Kohta kun saan kasvihuoneen tyhjäksi taimista voin taas laittaa krappia sinne kylmävärjäykseen, tänä kesänä aion kokeilla muitakin kylmävärjäyksiä siellä. Nyt ainakin riittää lämpöä:)

The weather has now turned warmer, so soon I can plant my seedlings outside. In the picture there are woad (Isatis tinctoria) seedlings on the right and some of my japanese indigo (Polygonum tinctoria) on the left.
My woad seeds were about five years old so I was a little sceptical how they would germinate, but I got enough plants:) I sowed them March 29th and it took about three weeks for them to germinate in cool greenhouse. At the same time I also sowed madder and it was even slower, almost a month before the seedings appeared. Japanese indigo was quick, it took only six days for it to germinate. The sowing date was April 6th.
I transplanted the seedlings to individual pots in May 7th and I think now they are ready for planting outside. The japanese indigo looks a little wobbly, maybe I should have cut the top of the seedlings off to encourage them to grow more shoots?
I could have sowed woad straight to the ground, but I like to grow them first inside; this way I won't have to worry that the weeds smother them:-)
I found lots of pages about japanese indigo in the internet, but here is one about how they grow and process it in Japan.

I have also dyed with madder again, no 1922 is dyed on light grey wool, I have about 700grams of that color as well as the next one. No 1923 was first dyed yellow with rhubarb roots and then in the madder afterbath (from the stronger color) so it is quite orange. No 1924 is the second afterbath of madder and I have 300 grams of it.
As soon as I have all the plants out of my greenhouse (and tomatoes planted) I am going to start to dye there again, with madder and other plants that dye well with cold dyeing (solardyeing).

Rhubarbroots Raparperinjuuria

Vihdoin on kevät, puutarhatyöt vievät aika paljon aikaa, mutta värjäysten suhteen
tässä on se hyvä puoli, että maasta löytyy paljon värjäykseen kelpaavia juttuja. Ensimmäiset raparperinjuuret vaihdoin ystäväni kanssa kasveihin, hän joutui kaivamaan ison raparperin pois ja minulta löytyi taas ylimääräisiä perennoja, joista hän piti. Omat raparperinjuureni vielä odottavat kaivamista, toivottavasti ensi viikolla ehdimme tehdä sen.
Kuvassa näkyy nyt yhden ison raparperinjuuret pilkottuna odottamassa kuivuriin menoa. Ne kuivuivat yllättävän nopeasti, vuorokaudessa ihan kuiviksi. Ja tuoksu on jännä, mehiläisetkin tulivat pörräämään niihin, mutta eivät onneksi jääneet pidemmäksi aikaa:)

Parilla kilolla kokeilin tuoreena värjäämistä.
Ensimmäiseen kokeiluun keitin 1,2kg tuoreita pilkottuja raparperinjuuria 2 tuntia, annoin jäähtyä yön yli, siivilöin liemen ja keitin samat juuret uudelleen. Yhdistin toisenkin hyvin tumman liemen ensimmäiseen. Mietin sitten minkä verran lankaa tuohon uskaltaisi laittaa, päädyin 300grammaan alunalla esipuretettua lankaa eli 400g tuoretta juurta/100g lankaa.
Lanka värjääntyi välittömästi tumman keltaiseksi, mutta annoin sen hautua kuitenkin tunnin ajan, no1909. Nämä kolme vyyhtiä olivat kaikki eri värisiä alunperin 1909 oli valkoinen, 1910 vaalean harmaa ja 1911 tumman harmaa. Kun valkoisesta langasta tuli keltaista, niin harmaissa sama keltainen taittaakin vihreään eli käyttämällä eri värisiä lankoja saa eri sävyjä samasta liemestä alunapuretuksella, ei tarvita muita aineita.
Kokeilin vielä jälkiväriä, 1912 on ensimmäinen jälkiväri, sitäkin on 300g ja 1913 kolmas jälkiväri. Tämä viimeinen on niin vaalea, että sen joudun käyttämään pohjaksi jollekin muulle värjäykselle, mutta ensimmäisiin väreihin olen oikein tyytyväinen.

Tein vielä toisen värjäyksen tuoreilla juurilla. Nyt keitin kilon juuria kuten edellä, mutta laitoinkin liemeen 300g vaalean harmaata purettamatonta lankaa. tunnin värjäyksen lopussa lisäsin liemeen 3g rautavihtrilliä (eli 1g/100g lankaa) ja annoin olla vielä 15 minuuttia. Rauta puretusaineena muutti keltaisen vihreäksi, jossa tosin on edelleen lievä kellärtävä sävy, no 1908.
Jos olisin esipurettanut langat raudalla olisin varmaan saanut siitäkin liemestä vielä vähän lisää väriä, mutta nyt kun liemessä on rautaa, en enää voi laittaa sinne lankoja niin pitkäksi aikaa kuin normaali värjäys vaatisi. Jos langat ovat rautapitoisessa vedessä pidempään, ne alkavat muuttua karkeammiksi. Tästä syystä rautapuretetut langat on myös hyvä pestä tai ainakin huuhtoa ensimmäisen kerran heti värjäyksen jälkeen, että ylimääräinen rauta saadaan pois langoista. Rautalisäyksellä aikaansaadut vihreät ovat hyvin valonkestäviä kokemukseni mukaan ja mielestäni noinkin pieni määrä kuin 1g riittää, isot määrät voivat myös vahingoittaa villakuitua.
Rautapitoista lientä voi tehdä myös itse liottamalla rautanauloja etikkavedessä, tässä on vain se haitta, että silloin ei pysty arvioimaan todellista raudan määrää, joka joutuu kosketuksiin langan kanssa. Jos sitä on paljon, lanka voi vaurioitua, niinkuin myös varjätessä ruosteisessa rautapadassa. Rautapataa voi hyvin käyttää värjäykseen, mutta se on pestävä huolellisesti ennen värjäystä, että kaikki irtonainen ruoste/rauta saadaan pois. Puhtaasta rautapadasta irtoava pieni rauta riittää toimimaan puretteena eikä silloin vaara langan vaurioitumisesta ole niin suuri.

Finally spring is here and gardening takes a lot of my time, but the good thing is also that now I can find a lot of fresh dyestuffs. I got first rhubarb roots from a friend, she had to dig an old rhubarb up and I got it's roots, as an exchange she got some new perennial flowers from me to her garden. I am going to dig one of my rhubarbs up, maybe next week.
In the top picture there are the roots of one big rhubarb, cut to pieces and ready for drying. The smell of the roots is peculiar, even bees came to check them out, but luckily they didn't like the roots.

I didn't dry all the roots, but used couple of kilos fresh.
First I boiled 1,2 kg of fresh rhubarb roots for 2 hours, let them cool overnight, then strained the liquid and put fresh water over the roots once more and boiled again. I put these two baths together and after some thinking put 300grams of alum mordanted yarn to the bath (so that is 100grams of yarn/400grams of fresh roots). Instantly the yarns turned bright yellow, but I simmered them for one hour. Of the three skeins one was white yarn, no 1909, one light natural grey, 1910 and one natural dark grey, 1911. As you see, when dyeing white yarn you get yellow, but in the same bath natural grey yarns seem more green, they are actually the same yellow but the grey makes them seem green. So now I get more colors from the same bath with using only alum as a mordant.
I dyed also afterbaths, no 1912 is the frst afterbath, also 300grams and no 1913 is the second afterbath, but it is so pale that I am going to use it as a base for some future color. For the first and darkest yellows I am very pleased.

I did another dyeing with the fresh roots. I boiled one kilo of fresh roots as above, but to this bath I put 300grams of unmordanted light grey yarn. After simmering for one hour, I added 3 grams of iron to the bath and let the yarn simmer for another 15 minutes before taking the yarns up and washing them. Using iron as a mordant I got nice olive shade with a slight yellowish tinge from these rhubarb roots, no 1908.
As I put the iron to the bath instead of premordanting the yarn this is the only color I got from this bath. Now that there is still iron in the bath I don't want to put yarn there for as long time as would be necessary for another dyeing, because the yarns could become harsh. When using iron I keep the yarns in the bath with it only for 15 minutes, that is enough and it doesn't harm the wool. I also use quite a smal amount of iron, only 1gram/100grams of yarn, very big amounts of iron might harm the yarn. This is also the reason why it is good to wash or at least rinse the iron mordanted yarns right after the dyeing, to remove the excess iron from the fibers. The olive shades that I get with iron mordant are very lightfast to my experience.
You can also make ironwater yourself from rusty nails soaked in vinegar, but I think there is one problem with that: you don't know how much iron you get in you dyebath/ to your yarns and if there is too much, it might harm the wool. It is the same thing when you use rusty ironpot for dyeing, you have to scrub all the rust away befor using the pot so that you don't get too much iron in your bath (I really know this from experience, you can get too much iron from rusty pots and the yarn gets damaged). You can use clean pots made of iron for dyeing and enough iron comes off of them to act as a mordant and the danger of the wool coming harsh isn't so great.

Rhubarb root dyeing Raparperinjuurella värjäystä

Kevättä odotellessa kokeilin raparperin juurten käyttämistä tuhkalipeässä, se kun sisältää samoja väriaineita kuin paatsamankuoretkin. Laitoin 180g kuivattuja raparperinjuuria tuhkalipeään, pH10, ja pidin niitä lämpimässä puuhellan kulmalla viikon. Liemi muuttui melkein heti tummanpunaiseksi, mutta ei alkanut käydä eli ei kuplimista eikä pH:n laskua, niinkuin käymisessä olisi kuulunut tapahtua. Sen sijaan liemi muuttui ensin paksuksi punaiseksi kiisseliksi, sitten hyytelöksi! Annoin liemen seistä vielä toisenkin viikon ja se vain paksuni.

Lopulta lisäsin vettä, hauduttelin mössöä hiljaisella tulella päivän ja seuraavan aamuna siivilöin normaaliksi väriliemeksi muuttuneen kiisselin. Myös pH oli laskenut 7:ään.

Lisäsin 100g alunapuretettua lankaa ja parin tunnin värjäyksen jälkeen siitä tuli voimakkaan sinapinkeltaista lankaa, no1893. Värjäsin seuraavana päivänä jälkiliemessä 300g indigosinistä vihreäksi, no 1894, ja vielä myöhemmin osan jo aiemmin indigolla ja kokenillilla moniväriseksi värjättyyn lankaan vihreää, jota tosin tuli liian vähän, lanka no1891, jota on kuvassa kaksi vyyhtiä. Tätä lankaa on nyt jäljellä 390g. Vieläkin liemi näytti väriä, joten laitoin sinne osittain sidottuna vielä aiemmin krapilla vaaleankirjavaksi värjättyä lankaa, 1892.

Raparperinjuurien käyttäminen ei siis onnistunut, mutta muu värjäys kyllä sitten ihan hyvin. Nämä olivat vielä viime vuotisia kuivattuja juuria, mutta ehkä kuukauden päästä pääsen jo kaivelemaan omia raparperinjuuriani. Virolainen Liis oli nostanut maasta ja värjännyt myös raparperinjuurilla jo helmikuussa ja kirjoittanut siitä blogissaan.

Cardonin kirjan mukaan raparperinjuurissa (ja erityisesti koristeraparperien, Rheum officinale ja Rheum palmatum) voi olla jopa 25 erilaista antrakinoniväriainetta, vain krapista on niitä löydetty enemmän. Näitä samoja on siis myös paatsamankuorissa ja sienissä. Lisäksi raparperinjuurissa on muitakin väriaineita ja tanniineja. Nämä väriaineet ovat hyvin valon- ja pesunkestäviä. Erilaisten väriaineiden suhteellinen osuus vaihtelee vuodenaikojen mukaan, Cardon sanoo antrakinoneja olevan eniten kesällä. Täytyykin jättää osa juurista kerättäväksi keskikesälle:)

While waiting for spring to come, I have tried fermenting rhubarb roots in wood ash lye, I thought that would be interesting, because it contains the same dyestuffs as buckthorn bark. I put 180grams of dried rhubarb roots to soak in lye, pH10 and let it sit in a warm place for one week. The color of the bath changed to bloodred, but it didn't start to ferment, no bubbles and the pH didn't drop like it did when I fermented other stuffs. Instead the bath became like a thick red jelly! I let it be for another week and it became even thicker.

I then added more water and simmered it for one day and the next day strained it. It now became like a normal dyebath and also the pH had dropped to 7. I added 100g of alum mordanted white yarn and got strong mustard color, no 1893. The next day I dyed 300grams of indigo blue yarn to green, no 1894 and then put some previously with indigo and cochineal dyed multicolored yarn in the pot. I have 390grams of that color now, no1891, two skeins in the picture. The bath looked like it had more color to give so I put there 500grams multicolored madder yarn, tied a little. That was too much, but the outcome was ok, still, no 1892.

Fermenting the rhubarb rots didn't work out, but anyway it gave good yellows. These roots were from last year, but maybe after only one month the ground has melted so much that I can dig up more rhubarb roots. Liis from Estonia has written to her blog about digging and dyeing with rhubarb roots already a month ago.

Cardon's book says that rhubarb roots (especially medicinal rhubarbs, Rheum officinale and Rheum palmatum) can contain up to 25 different anthraquinone colorants, only madder has more of them. There are also other dyestuffs and tannins in the roots and the colors from rhubarb roots are very light- and washfast. The proportions of the different dyestuffs vary depending on the time of year, the anthraquinones are more important in the summertime. I must save some rhubarbs to be dug up in the summer, too:)

New yarns Uusia lankoja

Lumikellot eivät liity mitenkään värjäyksiin, mutta en malttanut olla laittamatta viime viikonloppuna otettua kuvaa niistä. Kevät tulee ja nyt lumetkin ovat jo sulaneet niiden ympäriltä:)

Snowdrops have nothing to do with dyeing, but it is so nice that spring is coming that I had to show you what my snowdrops looked like last week-end. Now the rest of the snow has already melted, but the temperature is near freezing and the snowdrops wait for better weather to open their flowers.

Yritin vielä pelastaa jotain väriä viime viikkoisesta okrakääpävärjäyksestä, lisäsin lipeää, niin että pH oli 10, mutta liemen väri ei muuttunut. Laitoin liemeen 20g vaalean harmaata aluna puretettua lankaa, joka vuorokauden jälkeen oli muuttunut himmeän violetihtavaksi eli jotain väriä oli tarttunut, mutta laitan kyllä sen värjäyksen kokeilujen piikkiin ja yritän joskus uudestaan eri tavalla.
Kokenillivärjäykset sen sijaan eivät pettäneet ja yllä on kuvia huomenna torille menevistä uusista langoista. Iso vyyhti, no 1887, on värjätty ruskealle sävylangalle, jossa väri muuttuu vaaleammasta tummempaan ja päinvastoin, kuvasta ei kunnolla näe sävyeroja. Sitä lankaa on 400g (kaksi isoa vyyhtiä), ja se maksaa 13€/100g, muita värejä on 700-800g ja niiden hinta on 10€/100g.
Alimmaisessa kuvassa olevaa indigolla ja paatsamankuorella värjättyä vihreää on vain 100g, 10€.

I tried to save something of the last weeks polypore dyeings, like Pääpä and Helen suggested, raised the pH to 10 with more lye, but the color of the bath didn't change. I put 20grams of light grey wool in it and after one day it is now light purplish grey, but I am not sure how much of that is due to the basic color of the wool. These are just things I have to learn from and now I know better next time:)
Cochineal is always dependable, the yarns above are dyed last week with it and they are going to the market tomorrow. The biggest skein, no 1887, is dyed on natural brown wool where the color gradually changed from lighter to darker and vice versa and so the red changes also, it doesn't show well in the picture unfortunately. I have 400grams of it (two big skeins) and it costs 13€/100grams. The other colors cost 10€/100grams and I have 700-800grams of each color.
The green in the bottom picture is dyed first blue with natural indigo and then overdyed with buckthorn bark, very nice green. I have now only 100grams of it and it cost 10€.

Last weeks new yarns Viime viikon uudet langat

Tässäpä viime viikkoisia uusia monivärilankoja, ylemmässä on indigoa ja kokenillia, alemmassa indigoa, kokenillia ja pähkinänkuorta. Toisessa alla olevassa kuvassa on mallitlikku tuosta ylemmästä langasta, jota on 499g, alempaa vain 200g. Vihreä monivärinen on värjätty ensin indigolla, sitten paatsamankuorella ja keltasauramolla, sitä lankaa löytyy 600g. Hinta 13€/100g, lauantaina ne löytyvät torilta:)
Kun tässä pikku erillä harjottelen talven mittaan, niin ehkä sitten löytyvät oikeat väriyhdistelmät.

Here are last weeks new multicolored yarns. In the upper picture the upper yarn is dyed with indigo and cochineal, you can see how it looks knitted in the lower picture. I have 400grams of this yarn. The other color, 1873, is dyed with indigo, cochineal and wallnut hulls and I have 200grams of it.
The green multicolored yarn is dyed with indigo, buckthorn bark (afterbath) and dyer's coreopsis, I have this yarn 600grams. The price of these is 13€/100grams and they are going to the market Saturday:)

Yarns... Lankoja..

Olen taas värjännyt kokenillilla vähäsen myyntilankoja kuorikokeilujen lomassa, alemmasta yllä olevista piti tulla monivärinen, mutta kokenilli peitti alla olevan krapin, muuten ihan hyvä väri, värjätty harmaalle langalle. Ylempi on sitten jälkiväri samasta liemestä, myös harmaalle langalle. Molempia värejä on vain 300g kumpaakin.

Last week I have dyed yarns for sale with cochineal. The lower yarn in the top picture was going to be multicolored, but again cochineal covered all the madder red I had dyed before. Nice color nevertherless. The other one is from after bath of the same cochineal. Both are dyed on grey wool and I have only 300grams of each.


Nämä onnistuivat paremmin, punaisessa on vaalean ruskealle langalle krapilla värjätty pohja ja kokenillia päälle, ja violetissa indigo ensin ja sitten kokenilli. Kumpaakin väriä on vain 200g, samoin kuin alakuvassa olevaa oikeanpuolimmaista väriä, jossa on kokenillilla värjätty samettijalkavihreän päälle. Siinä puretuksena oli rauta, muissa aluna ja viinikivi.

These turned out better, the red one is dyed on light brown wool first with madder and then with cochineal. The purple yarn is dyed first with indigo and then cochineal. I have only 200 grams of these both, as well as the purple in the far right in the bottom picture. That color was dyed first with green with mushroom Paxillus atrotomentosus, mordanted with iron, and then with cochineal. All the other colors were mordanted with alum and cream of tartar.

Multicolored yarns Monivärilankoja

Olen kokeillut, millaisia tulisi monella värillä värjätyistä langoista. Nämä ovat vasta harjoittelua, että löytyisi yhteensopivat värit. Ylemmästä tuli mielestäni aika kiva, siinä on ensin värjätty krapilla ja sitten paatsamankuorilla, sitomalla osa vyyhdistä niin, että väri ei tunkeudu joka kohtaan. Krappi toimii aika kivasti näin, alapuolella on kokeilu jossa pohjana oli indigo sininen, sitten paatsamankuorta ja kokenillia ja nyt kokenilli dominoi mielestäni liikaa (ehkä liian vahva liemi), mutta muuten ok.

Yläkuvan lankoja on neljä n 100g vyyhtiä ja ne maksavat 13€/100g, alemman kuvan langat ovat sukkalankaa (jota tietysti voi käyttää muuhunkin) ja ne ovat 140g kokoisia, niitä on vain nuo kaksi eri sävyistä vyyhtiä. Hinta sama 13€/100g eli 17,20€ vyyhti. Nämä tulevat huomenna torille mukaan.

I have been trying to dye multicolored yarns. The first one on the top came out pretty well, I think. It is dyed first with madder and then with buckthorn bark and I have tied parts of the skein so that the dye doesn't penetrate everywhere. Madder seems to work fine this way, but the cochineal in the bottom picture was too dominant color, the solution was propably too strong. I had dyed the bottom yarns first blue with indigo and yellow(=green) with buckthorn bark, but the color of cochineal covered most of the green.

I have four about 100grams skeins the orange multicolor yarns, they are 13€/100grams and the yarns in the bottom picture are sockyarn (though you can knit anything else from them, too) and they are 140grams each (only those two skeins) and the price is same 13€/100grams, for 140grams it is 17,20€. I am going to take these to the market tomorrow.

Blue sock yarn Sinistä sukkalankaa

Sain värjättyä vähäsen sukkalankojakin indigolla, tuloksena kahta haalistunutta farkkusinistä. Ylempi 1780 on vaaleampi kuin 1779, kuvassa ero ei näy kovin hyvin. Hinta näillä on sama kuin muillakin kasvivärjätyillä eli 100Eur/kg, 150g vyyhdin hinnaksi tulee siis 15 Euroa. Harmaa vyyhti on samaa värjäämättömänä. Lisää sukkalankavärjäyksiä on odottamassa.

I dyed our new sock yarn with natural indigo and got two blue colors, both look a little like the blue in faded jeans, 1780 is a lighter than 1779, the difference doesn't show very well in the picture. The price for these is the same as the price for our other naturally dyed yarns 100Eur/kg, so for 150g skein it is 15 Euros. The grey yarn in the picture is the original sheep color. More sock yarn is waiting for dyeing.
