My dye plants right now Värikasvejani nyt

Pictures from last week of my dye plants.

In the picture above I had cut a mix of knapweeds, our native goldenrods (Solidago virgaurea) and canadian goldenrod hybrids (garden plant). I dyed with this mix using 500g of leaves and flowers /100g wool. I have noticed earlier that native goldenrod doesn't give as strong yellow as canadian goldenrod, and this is what happened also now. About half of the plants were native goldenrods and the colour became paler than I expected. The base colour was medium blue dyed with japanese indigo last year, and the result with overdyeing with this mix was dark turqoise blue. Quite pretty colour anyway:).

IN ENGLISH

Weld plants which I had transplanted in spring have grown well and are now ready for harvesting. They are in the back left side. Also japanese indigo is growing well, but the weather is now very warm and I will let it still grow and take advantage of this hot spell.

IN ENGLISH

Woad plants have grown well even though I planted them quite late in May. They are in the back in the picture, in the foreground there are three small plants of chinese woad, Isatis indigotica. I found some eleven years old seeds of chinese woad in my seed stash in the fridge, and in spring I wanted to try if they still germinated. Only a few of the seeds germinated, hopefully I get more seeds from these plants next year if they overwinter. Though, even if chinese woad has more indigo precursors than ordinary woad, it isn't as vigorous and so I get a lot more leaves from woad than from chinese woad and  it makes woad a better plant to grow here in my climate. I have written here about chinese woad.

IN ENGLISH

My dyer's broom, Genista tinctoria is growing also well and flowering right now, and it is ready to dye with. Usually it flowers here later, but now last winter was so mild that it survived better, and is flowering earlier. In more southern climates it gives two harvests in the same summer, here it is usually only one harvest in autumn, but I don't mind. It gives such a good yellow, and is easy to grow.

These are not dye plants, but I love my Phloxes in the garden:).

December 6 Woad Morsinko

Itsenäisyyspäivän kunniaksi tämän päivän lanka on värjätty morsingolla.
Tämän päivän langat on värjätty lokakuussa, toisen sadon lehdillä.

IN ENGLISH
Today is Finnish Independence Day , and to celebrate it, today's colour is dyed with woad, and ancient dye also from here. I don't grow a lot of woad, but some every year:).
In Pohjanmaa, Middle of Finland, there is a new project about growing  woad in a larger scale, Natural Indigo Finland, and I wish them success with it.

I have dyed today's yarns with my own woad which was from second crop in October. I got good strong blue from the leaves I harvested in August, but these October leaves gave quite light blue. We had night frosts in late September, so I'm thinking that maybe that was a reason there wasn't so much indigo in the leaves, even though they still looked ok when I harvested them. Another possibility is that as September was quite rainy and cloudy, the leaves had not enough indigo in them, but I suspect more the frost as a cause of this.
Anyway I still like also this colour! In my shop here.

IN ENGLISH
I dyed first time this year with woad in the beginning of August, and last week I cut the second row of plants for dyeing. In the picture below the front row is the one I had already cut three weeks ago and the middle row was cut now. The front row had grown new leaves quite nicely, and I will get a new crop later in September from my woad plants. I used 800g of leaves / 100g of yarn which gave me two times the blue in the picture and third time very pale blue. Woad gave me just the right blue for Bellflowers mitten kits.
Woad has liked this summer and they have grown well.

IN ENGLISH
I also dyed couple of weeks ago with japanese indigo which grew in my polytunnel, and also they will give me a second crop later in the autumn (I left some plants uncut, so that they would grow flowers and from which I could get hopefully seeds). Japanese indigo grew this year much better inside polytunnel than outside. From five seedlings I got totally 2 kg of stripped leaves, which dyed two times 6 skeins and 4 paler blue in the third bath, totally 16 skeins of blue. The darker blues are dyed on natural grey yarn, which makes the colour darker and a bit greyish.

IN ENGLISH
Japanese indigo which I planted outside in spring did not do so well this summer, but finally now in August it has started to grow better. It was so dry and hot in June, and I should have watered them more, and then most of July was also dry, and yet cloudy. Only in the end of July was a hot sunny period and in August it has rained sufficiently, though I still had to water them couple of times.
Last week we got good amount of rain with thunder storms.
I'm thinking I will start to harvest and dye with these plants next week:).

Woad, japanese indigo and Devil's Bit Scabious Morsinko, väritatar ja purtojuuri

June was very warm until Midsummer,  but also dry. Woad has grown well, and is maybe ready for the first harvest in late July early August.

Japanese indigo has grown slower outside, and I should have watered it more, maybe. It is always starting to grow faster in July, hopefully this year also. These plants were covered with fleece until Midsummer. They are now easier to water without it.

Inside my polytunnel japanese indigo looks very good, clearly they have liked the extra warmth and shelter.

Viime vuonna kylvin purtojuurta, Succisa pratensis.

Jonssonin kirjan ohje on käännös tästä Linnen tekstistä seuraavasti:

IN ENGLISH
Last year I sowed seeds of Devils's Bit Scabious, Succisa pratensis. Not many seeds germinated and here is a picture of them now.

Last week Ashley in Susan Dye- blog had written a very good post about this plant, and experimented dyeing with it. In Ethel Mairet Book on Vegetable Dyes (1916) there is a mention that Devil's Bit Scabious can give blue, but no recipe for it. It may be that my growing this plant is going to be in vain, because even Ashley's experiments didn't give any hint of blue. It is very possible that this is another of those dye myths which  dye books keep repeating and no-one has actually tried it. Well, Succisa pratensis is a good plant for butterflies and it doesn't grow near my house anyway so it is good to plant it.

Why I originally became interested in growing Succisa pratensis, is that I have a book Sune and Stina Jonsson: Yrttikirja (Örtabok, Book about herbs) from 1979, originally written in Swedish and translated in Finnish. It says that Linne had written that Succisa had been used in Öland (an island by Swedish coast) to dye green (a bit like indigo in my mind). In Coloriasto there is the original text from Linne's book Förtekning, af de färgegräs, som brukas på Gotland ock Öland, III (1742), 20-28, in old Swedish. Scroll down to Green part.
In Jonsson's book there is a translation of this text in Finnish and it goes something like this in English:
"Place alternately fresh Devil's Bit Scabious leaves and yarn, and boil them in a pot as long as fish is boiled. Let the concoction stay overnight and next morning raise the not yet coloured yarn up.  Then heat the concoction and hang the yarns by rods above the pot. Cover the yarns with a lid, so that the steam from the pot doesn't evaporate, but would saturate the yarns, because it is this steam which makes them green. When the yarns are taken out in the morning, they are wrung dryer, leaves discarded, ashes added to the concoction and yarns dipped to it several times until they are well coloured."

EDIT.
I've been thinking about this recipe, and if you leave out the steaming part of Linne's recipe, then the answer may be simpler. Many yellow colours get stronger if the yarns are soaked in wood ash lye (or any other alkaline). If yellow is dyed on grey yarn, the colour looks green, and at least in Åland the sheep were also grey, maybe also sheep in Gotland at that time were grey. Also many people see cold yellows as greenish yellows and that is a small step to saying the colour is green!

Planting blue Sinisen värin kasvien istuttamista

Viime viikolla aloin istuttaa väritattaria maahan ulos. Niille on jo paikka valmiina, maa lannoitettuna hevosenlantakompostilla.

IN ENGLISH
Last week I started to plant my japanese indigo seedlings outside. I plant them quite far apart, 40-50cm from each other, because they will become big plants though right now they don't look like it. One night temperature was barely over freezing, +1C, but next week it is going to warm up and I will plant the rest of the seedlings outside. I have already prepared a bed for them with composted horse manure. I keep my japanese indogo protected with double fleece yet for couple of weeks. After planting the seedlings and taking these pictures, I mulched them with fresh grass clippings which helps to keep the soil moist and reduces the need to water them.

IN ENGLISH
I planted woad seedlings outside May 9th, when the seedlings were about two weeks old and still quite small. I mulched with grass clippings, and kept  them covered with fleece because there were several nights below freezing still in early May. Now those plants look like this, and are growing well.
Plants are about 25cm apart from each other and the rows 40cm apart.

Old woad is germinating Vanha morsinko itää sittenkin

IN ENGLISH
I sowed 10 years old woad seeds in April 5th, and at first I thought that they don't germinate, but during last week-end something started to happen. First to germinate were the seeds on the right. They were originally from France, but I had gotten them from my friend Anna in 2010.
Next germinated seeds in the middle which were a gift from England in 2009, and the last to germinate are the ones on the left, which were from my own plants in 2009.
I keep dry seeds in the fridge wrapped in plastic, so that they don't get moisture. If they were kept in room temperature, I'm sure they wouldn't have been viable any more. It is surprising and great how long the woad seeds can keep their ability to germinate!
Fresh seeds could have germinated faster, I think. It now took almost three weeks for them to germinate in the greenhouse, but there is still enough time for them to grow.

Results of lightfastness test from last summer Orakaslankojen valonkestotestin tuloksia viime kesältä

IN ENGLISH
Last summer I put some yarns dyed with tooth fungi to light fastness test outside in our porch, where they were from mid July to the end of August, left half of them covered. July was sunny but in August it was more cloudy and rainy. Yarns got direct sunlight in the afternoons (that is when it actually was sunny).
Blues from tooth fungi had faded quite a lot, and brown shades where left in them. The top blue was dyed with woad and it was there for comparison, it had kept it's colour.

What's happening in the garden Puutarhakuulumisia

Hiukan kuvia alkukesän värikasvimaaltani. Kesäkuun alussa yöt lämpenivät ja vihdoin vajaa pari viikkoa sitten pääsin istuttamaan väritattaren taimet ulos. Osan olinkin jo aiemmin istuttanut kasvihuoneeseen. Ulos istutetut katoin ruohosilpulla ja peitin kasvit harsolla.

IN ENGLISH
Here are some pictures of my dyeplants. May was very cold, freezing nights right until the end of May, but finally in the beginning of June the weather got warmer and I could plant my japanese indigo outside two weeks ago. I had already planted some inside the greenhouse, just in case the summer was cold. I mulched the plants with grass clippings and covered them all with fleece.

IN ENGLISH
Because May was so cold, my madder came up only in the end of the month. I was already worried that I had lost them but luckily they were only late. In the beginning of June I dug up couple of big plants for dyeing. Their roots were thick like my little finger:) I washed them three times and put them to dry (I know should have cut them smaller, I hope it is not too difficult later). I will dye with these some time next autumn or winter.

Värireseda on lähtenyt kasvuun ihan kivasti.

Weld is growing nicely.

Myös morsingot näyttävät hyviltä eivätkä olleet kärsineet halloista vaikka en ollut peittänytkään niitä harsolla.

Also woad looks good and hadn't suffered from freezing nights, though they were not covered with fleece.

IN ENGLISH
Last years woad plants had almost all dyed last winter, only couple of plants survived, and only one is flowering in the edge of my flowerbed. Two other plants grow only leaves (which I can use for dyeing). For some reason mostly woad does not survive the winters in my garden. My soil is too heavy and wet for it, only that place in the flower bed is good enough for it, it is slightly raised bed, and I had tried to improve the soil for my irises and peonies:).

IN ENGLISH
This week I have dyed with Greater Celandine, Chelidonium majus, which grows here as a weed. I use 1kg of plants to 100g of yarn, and they give quite nice warm yellow. Also now here is the time to dye with Meadowsweet, Filipendula ulmaria. I think it is better to use them before they flower, because flowers and even buds are difficult to get out the bath, and they stick to the yarn so badly, so I always dye with the leaves before flowering. They give quite strong greenish yellow, depending on the amount of plants, good with overdyeing blues to get green. Mostly I use also them ten times the amount of yarn.

Japanese indigo and woad this year Väritatar ja morsinko tänä vuonna

Kesä on mennyt.

Kuva on otettu 28.6.

IN ENGLISH
Summer is over. The market season was busy but very good. There were lot of knitting tourists and many knew us and came specially to our booth while they were visiting Helsinki. Weather was more cloudy and cooler this summer  than usually, and perhaps that also contributed to good sales, though I'm not sure about that. True buyers buy whatever the weather.

I liked the weather this summer, but it seems that it wasn't so good for my japanese indigo. Temperatures were around 20C most of the summer, but it was mostly cloudy and rained a lot. There was only one sunny and hot week in July all summer. The blues I got from my plants were much paler this year than previously, and I think this was due to the weather. Last year it was also rainy summer in June and July, but then all August was sunny and hot, so that helped very much with japanese indigo. The first frost came a week ago, and now the season for japanese indigo here is over.
I planted japanese indigo outside in the end of May, kept them covered with horticultural fleece until end of June, though there were no night frosts.

I grew it in three beds, and besides weather, it seems that I hadn't given enough horse manure compost to one of the beds. In the picture below you can see the difference in the colour of the leaves of japanese indigo, the plants in the foreground are paler and I think that is because of lack of nutrients. At this point I added grass clippings (which gives nitrogen) around them. The picture was taken June 28.

Alla oleva kuva on näistä kahdesta väritatar penkistä heinäkuun lopulla.

The picture below is from these two japanese indigo beds in the end of July.

Below japanese indigo in the end of August when I started to harvest it. From the beginning of August I take weekly one leaf and dry it to see how dark it turns and so I see how indigo precursors develop. Here in the end of this post there are pictures of leaves taken at different time. This year the leaves never became very dark so it mad me suspect that there wasn't as much indigo in them as usually.

Another thing which made me suspect everything was not well, was that many plants had reddish edges in their leaves. I understand that this is a sign of stress, either too cold, too dry or lack of nutrients. It wasn't too dry this year, the opposite, but there was very little sun, and perhaps something else was not right. I have grown japanese indigo now for quite a number of years, but there are still things to learn! Next year I'll be more exact with compost, and I will plant some also inside the greenhouse, you never know what the summer will be like.

I dyed a lot of medium and light blues, but this year I will have to dye darker blues with natural indigo powder. It usually takes all September to harvest and dye with my own japanese indigo plants. These yarns will have to last until new harvest next year, mainly they go to my mitten kits. After finishing the dyeing I now choose which lots are good for which kits, every dye lot is slightly different and they are not all good for some special pattern. Some I also choose to dyeing  with some yellow so the result is green. Rest of the yarns I sell mostly at the market, some can also go to the online shop, though the market is our main selling place. Before selling them, I have to re-skein them, because they are always more or less messy after dyeing and washing, and I don't want mu customers to deal with that. Japanese indigo dyeing season is short for me, rest of the year I can dye with natural indigo powder, which gives a little different shade of blues.

Also woad gave only light blues this year. If I hadn't gotten darker colours from japanese indigo and woad in previous years, I now would have started to doubt myself. Though it can still be my fault, too little compost for japanese indigo and the one thing I did differently with woad was that usually I harvest them in August first time and then second time in October. This year I was too busy with the market in August, and I did't have time to harvest woad until now, and so the leaves were old and big, albeit good looking. 15 kilos of leaves gave me only 1,5 kilos of light blue yarns. No mid blues not to speak of darker blues. Previous years I had dyed with the same amount of leaves twice as much blue as now, and half of it darker colours. Now even when I extracted the indigo from woad, I noticed that the liquid was not as blue as it should have been, and even the first bath gave light blue, and there was not blue left for after baths. Well, this year was like this, hopefully next year will be better, and I do need light blues for my mitten kits, so there is use for them, too:)

Market and planting indigo and fructose-indigo vat Toria, väritattaren istutusta ja indigo-fruktoosikyyppi

Kesän torikausi Helsingin Kauppatorilla on taas alkanut.

The summer season at the market Kauppatori in Helsinki has started. In May my husband has been at the market about three days a week, and from next week on we'll be there four or five days a week. I will also be there some days.
Our booth is on the right in the picture, we have a Riihivilla sign, and also you will identify us also from our Finnsheep yarns dyed with natural dyes, mitten kits and my husbands nature photos.

April was quite cold but now it has been unusually warm considering this time of year, and couple of days ago I started to plant japanese indigo outside. After taking the pictures I covered them with horticultural fleece to keep them as warm as possible.

Tänä vuonna kylvin morsingon suoraan maahan huhtikuussa, reilu kuukausi sitten.

This year I sowed woad straight outside in April, a little over a month ago. Germination took almost three weeks, because of the cold weather I think, but now they are growing well. Next I have to thin them, because there are too many plants too close to each other.

Ten days ago I made fructose indigo vat. I wanted to try common sugar in it (because I read someone succeeding with it). I had 5 litres of water, 20grams of indigo, 40 grams of lime, 60 grams of sugar and handful of madder. Ordinary sugar didn't start to work, so after waiting for two hours I added about 80 grams of honey (because my fructose had gotten moist in storage and became a rock hard clump which I couldn't break to smaller pieces). Honey worked wonderfully in only 15 minutes and the vat was ready to dye. I dyed several skeins with the vat then, and because I needed the pot to something else I poured the vat to the red bucket and covered it with a lid. The next day I noticed that the vat was working still fine, but I didn't have time to dye with it. All that week and the next week also I was busy with other things, but then yesterday I looked at the bucket and to my surprise it had good blue froth on top and the liquid below was perfect brownish yellow. Bucket had been outside in our porch all this ten days, and even though the day temperatures were over 20°C, the nights were between 5-10°C, so the temperature varied a lot. I had thought the vat had to be kept warm in order for it to reduce, but this lime-madder-honey-vat did it in quite cool temperature. The pH had stayed high, 10-11 (so the vat hadn't fermented which lowers the pH), and now today when I dyed with it, the temperature of the vat was 25°C. It seemed to be enough because it dyed well.

The light blue on the right is how it looked after the first dip today, after second dip the colour became darker. The greens were yellows overdyed with indigo (in hydrosulfite vat) though I usually prefer to dye first blue and then yellow, but  I had some ugly yellows which I wanted to dye green.

One more picture, apple trees are full of flowers right now:)

Dried woad leaves?

When I first read about extraction indigo from dry leaves of japanese indigo, I was wondering if the same method would work with woad. So from my second harvest of woad in September I dried a kilo of washed fresh leaves.  In Cardon's Natural Dyes it is mentioned that indigo precursors may be preserved in dried leaves or hydrolyzed and transformed to indigotin. One way was to put fresh leaves of  Indigofera-plants, japanese indigo or woad in a plastic bag to freezer overnight. Then take them out the next day and dry them.
So I tried this and put another kilo of fresh leaves to the freezer overnight and the next day put the frozen leaves to my dryer for plants (I can't remember what was the word in English for this machine). The third kilo of woad leaves was harvested a week ago, after we had had a cold period with freezing night temperature several nights, couple of the coldest nights were -7,5°C (18°F), which is quite cold at this time of year here, and even in the daytime the temperatures were barely above freezing. So woad some of the woad leaves were damaged with this, but not all. I harvested and dried these leaves even though some of them were quite slimy after being frozen and melted several times.

The difference between leaves dried fresh and after being frozen in the freezer was visible. The leaves dried fresh were nice and green when dried, and the ones from the freezer were dark blueish green, clearly the cells had been broken by the frost and indigo precursors had been released in the leaves. The same thing happens with japanese indigo leaves when they get frost bitten, but woad needs much colder temperatures for this to happen than japanese indigo. The dried leaves which were harvested after the cold period outside were some pale green, some darker green.

Mm täällä on englanniksi morsinkopallojen tekemisestä.

IN ENGLISH
When I looked at the color of the dried leaves, it is easy to imagine that the method to extract indigo from dry japanese indigo leaves would work at least with the dry woad leaves which had been in the freezer, but I can't say if the indigo precursor had been preserved in freshly dried woad leaves. The traditional way to store woad was to make so called woad balls from fresh woad leaves, and then dry the balls. The cell structure was broken when the balls were made. Here in Woad.org -pages is how to make woad balls. Dry woad balls needed fermentation before they were ready to use, but I think this chemical method would also work with woad balls. I was going to make some woad balls also, but didn't have time and now it is too late. next year, hopefully:) I will try experimenting with all these leaves later in the winter when I have more time. Freezing method is suitable for only small amounts (who has a lot of empty space in the freezer in the autumn), and the safest method to store indigo from woad or japanese indigo is to extract it from the fresh leaves and store as an alkaline solution after oxydizing. I have stored such solution successfully for several months and even a year in cool cellar.

After the cold week, it's been warmer again, and beautiful autumn has continued. Here are some pictures from the garden in a foggy morning last week.

Frost bitten japanese indigo stems and leaves are beautiful to me, and they give nice colors to the garden.
