December 6 Woad Morsinko

Itsenäisyyspäivän kunniaksi tämän päivän lanka on värjätty morsingolla.
Minulla ei ole kovin paljon morsinkoa kasvamassa vuosittain, mutta aina vähäsen:). Pohjanmaalla morsinkoa on alettu kasvattaa isommassa määrin, Natural Indigo Finland,  ja toivotan heille kovasti menestystä.
Tämän päivän langat on värjätty lokakuussa, toisen sadon lehdillä. Elokuussa keräämistäni lehdistä tuli aika voimakasta hyvää väriä, mutta näistä lokakuisista taas melko vaaleaa. Siinä vaiheessa kun keräsin lehtiä, oli jo syyskuun lopulla ollut muutamia pakkasöitä. Vaikka lehdet näyttivätkin vielä ihan hyviltä, niin ehkä pakkanen oli ehtinyt vaikuttaa lehtien indigopitoisuuteen. Toinen vaihtoehto vaaleaan väriin olisi siinä, että syyskuussa satoi paljon eikä ollut aurinkoa, ja ehkä toiseen satoon ei ollut ehtinyt kertyä tarpeeksi indigoa. Hiukan kyllä kuitenkin epäilen sitä pakkasta, koska harvoin loppusyksyn sadosta olen saanut tummaa.
Joka tapauksessa tämäkin on minusta tosi nätti väri! Kaupassani täällä.

Today is Finnish Independence Day , and to celebrate it, today's colour is dyed with woad, and ancient dye also from here. I don't grow a lot of woad, but some every year:).
In Pohjanmaa, Middle of Finland, there is a new project about growing  woad in a larger scale, Natural Indigo Finland, and I wish them success with it.

I have dyed today's yarns with my own woad which was from second crop in October. I got good strong blue from the leaves I harvested in August, but these October leaves gave quite light blue. We had night frosts in late September, so I'm thinking that maybe that was a reason there wasn't so much indigo in the leaves, even though they still looked ok when I harvested them. Another possibility is that as September was quite rainy and cloudy, the leaves had not enough indigo in them, but I suspect more the frost as a cause of this.
