Colours from autumn apple tree leaves Värit syksyisistä omenapuunlehdistä

In mid October leaves in our apple trees had turned orange and yellow, and after one windy night they had dropped. I have in previous autumns dyed successfully with fallen autumn leaves, and so I did also now. In the morning after they had dropped, I collected them for dyeing.
There is one wild apple tree growing in sunny and dry spot in the edge of the forest, and it's leaves had turned orange, while the leaves in an old cultivar 'Rautell' growing in more clay and moist soil were more yellow. I collected the leaves separately from each tree, and put them in net bags to soak in water with added washing soda.

Isosta 'Rautell'- puusta olisi lehtiä tullut paljon enemmänkin, mitä otin nyt värjäykseen. Pari jätesäkillistä lehtiä meni kompostiin tekeytymään hyväksi lehtimullaksi tuleville vuosille.

Under the big 'Rautell' there were so much leaves, that I couldn't dye with all of them, and the rest went to compost where they will make very nice leaf mold to use in the garden in a year or two.

Keltaisemmista 'Rautell'in lehdistä tuli toinen vasemmalta oleva vaalean vihreä (värjätty luonnonbeigelle langalle, valkoiselle langalle niistä olisi tullut vaalean keltainen).

I let the leaves soak for almost two weeks and during that time they had started to ferment. After that I simmered the leaves for about an hour, and let it cool down before I took the leaf bags away. I used about 600g of leaves to 100g of yarn. In my experience the long soaking time is necessary when dyeing with autumn leaves. If dyed right away, the colours are much paler.

I got the golden yellow in the middle from the wild apple tree leaves (grown in dry sunny place), and the after bath gave me the yarn on the far right. From yellow leaves from the tree which grows in more clay soil, I got light green, the second colour from the left. It is dyed on natural beige yarn, which helped it looking green, dyed on white yarn it would have been more yellow. All yarns were premordanted with alum and cream of tartar. It is said that in plants grown in sunny place, there are more dyes in them, and it looks like it also in these apple trees.
I left the baths to ferment more for another ten days, and then dyed again with the same baths. Now I got the second colour from the right from wild apple tree. From 'Rautell' bath I got green on the far left. It is dyed on light grey yarn which is why it looks green, if dyed on white yarn the same bath would have given a yellow colour. I also used only half the amount of yarn, because the first bath didn't give so strong colour, and now it was ok.

I find dyeing with autumn leaves so easy, or actually collecting them is so much easier than when the leaves are still in trees. Only thing is that they need to be collected right away before rain soaks all the dyes from them in the ground. In the books it is often said that tree leaves give good colour only in early summer, but I have gotten good colour from them also in the autumn. It only takes more time:).

  1. So beautiful colours, and from fallen leaves. It's too late for me to try this year, but I have 3 different apple trees - all in a sunny place, I want to try this!. Thanks for your inspirational writings.

    1. Thank you:) I think all trees which leaves give good colour in summer, do that also in the autumn with longer soaking.
