Ranskassa B & T World Seeds myy monenlaisia indigokasvien siemeniä.

The flowers of my Japanese indigo (Persicaria/Polygonum tinctoria) still look like this, I doubt that I get my own seeds from them even though I have it growing inside the house now.
Some places that sell Japanese indigo seeds are:
In UK Wildcolours sells seeds of some dye plants and also Japanese indigo
In France B & T World Seeds sell seeds of many kinds of indigo-bearing plants
I had heard also of a German company which sells Japanese indigo seeds, but I couldn't find the name right now.
I don't know right now any sources for japanes indigo seeds in the US or Canada, but if someone knows any seed companies there that sell them, please tell:)

Pictures of my japanese indigo dyeings Väritatarvärjäyskuvia

Now I have dyed with all the japanese indigo that I have grown this year.
This has been very unusual autumn weatherwise, the first frost came already in the beginning of September, but it was only one night. It seemed to kill my japanese indigoes which grew outside, but when the weather became warmer (+10C) again, some plants started to grow again and I got more leaves from them a month later before the second frosty night came. Since then it has been no frosts and it is almost November now. Next week the weather forecast has predicted snow, so now I have cut also the rest of the plants from my greenhouse.
From the plants that grew outside I got only one big crop of leaves and some smaller leaves later, but the plants that grew inside the greenhouse (or is polytunnel better word?) grew two big crops. First was cut in the end of July and the second was ready in the end of September, two months later. We had a very cloudy and cool summer, so I am sure that in a warmer summer, I would have gotten even better crop.
I grew total of 62 plants and dyed with them about 7,5kilos of yarn (average of over 100grams from one plant). Some yarns were quite dark blue, most medium or light blue.

Most of the time I dyed with traditonal way, which I described in an earlier posting, here, but I also did some direct dyeing with vinegar. The latter is more time consuming so that is why I did less that way:(
In my big glass jar I could put about 800grams of fresh leaves at a time, I heated them to 70C in two hours and most of the time I also left them until next morning before I used them.
There are so many mysterious things about dyeing with fresh leaves of japanese indigo and so many things to experiment, for instance it seemed to me that when the liquid was paler, also the yarns were not so dark. And when it was darker like in the picture below, also the yarns were darker, but this is just how it feels, I could be wrong and the darker outcome would be a result of some other factor. Ah, luckily there is always next summer.. and summers after that, or maybe I find all the answers from someone else's experience in books or in the internet:)
I also tried if I could get more blue pigment from a second decoction of the same leaves, but no, most of the blue is in the first jar. Instead of more blue, I got nice strong yellow on alum mordanted yarn when I dyed the normal way with used japanese indigo leaves which I had simmered (I think boiling is bad for the yellow, too) for a while. I also tested the lightfastness of that yellow for a month outside and it didn't fade at all. of course there wasn't so much sun, but I think some other yellows (like onion skins) would have shown signs of fading in that time.
I used these yellow for greens when I overdyed them with blue japanese indigo.

In August when I dyed first time, I got a lot of blue foam when I oxidized the bath, and couple of times later, too, but sometimes there was hardly any foam even though the color was very dark and I got dark blue in the yarns. Why there is sometimes more foam than other times I don't know, but I could get good colors without much foam.

Syyskuussa halusin värjätä isomman erän samaa sinistä. Koska en tiennyt olisinko voinut hauduttaa lehtiä suoraan isossa kattilassa ilman vesihaudetta???, tein useamman haudutuksen lasipurkissa peräkkäisinä päivänä, yhdistin liemet isoon pataan ja jatkoin kuten tavallisesti.

In English
In September I wanted to dye a bigger amount of the same blue and as I didn't know if I could heat the fresh leaves in a big kettle without the double boiler thing???, I did it in the glass jar like before, three times in consecutive days, combined the liquids and added washing soda and sodium hydrosulfite, but increased the amounts in proportion to the liquid. I expected to get the same colors as before but for some reason the yarns were very pale, even after three dipping and oxidizing, the picture below. I still can't understand why the bath didn't dye like before!!

In English
Even more peculiar is what happened a week later. I had saved the bath and was going to use it as a base to indian indigo powder. I had already made the stock solution in a small separate jar, and I then heated the old japanese indigo bath, added some sodium hydrosulfite to it and when I looked at the bath half an hour later (before adding new indigo to it), it looked so yellow and right that I decided to try to dye with it some skeins, why not, I could always redye them later. And what do you know, they turned out good blue, much darker than the yarns week before!! Picture of these yarns is below.
Somehow the indigo wasn't ready when I dyed the first time (even though I think I did everything right) and during that week something had happened to it.

More Pisolithus yarns Lisää kuukuslankoja

In English
You might remember when I dyed first time with mushroom Pisolithus arhizus in the beginning of September. I dyed another patch of Pisolithus a week later and as I wanted to get variegated yarns, I didn't strain the mushrooms from the dyebath (at the time I thought this might help, and I did get variegated yarns, but not perhaps for this reason)), and so the mushrooms were together with the yarn in the bath. I got the darkest colors from a bath with mushrooms five times the weight of the yarn. I got also three afterbaths and like the first time I dyed with this mushroom, the third afterbath was quite light yellow.

The used dyebath was left to sit for three weeks (with mushrooms still in it), I never got around to throw it away. One day in the beginning of October I looked at it and thought that as it was still dark, maybe I would get some color to one more skein. I then reheated it with one skein of alum mordanted yarn. I was really surprised to see that after simmering for couple of hours and letting cool until the next morning, the yarn was very nice variegated dark reddish brown/brownish yellow. Much darker color than even the second afterbath from the same dyepot three weeks earlier! One lesson learned: never throw anything away too soon:)

After the first skein, I put one more to the bath for one day.. then another.. and another and another. It dyed unbelievably lot of yarn. The last skein is not reddish brown, but brownish yellow (not in the picture, it is still wet), and the bath still looks dark. Will it ever exhaust?

With about 3kilos of Pisolithus mushrooms I have now dyed 2,2kilos of yarn (and every skein is different). I got the darket shades only from the first baths (about 450grams), the other colors are reddish/yellowish brown, like you can see from the picture, and the last colors are more yellow. So the first pigments to attach are the dark browns, then reddish browns and brownish yellows and yellows are left to the last.
In the left side there is one skein which is greyish brown, that was pre-mordanted with iron (no alum), and all the other skeins were premordanted with alum and cream of tartar, which I think gave better colors. I have already sold some of these yarns, some are in my shop, but some I thought to use for some mitten kits, later, when I can decide which mittens would be nice with these colors:)

Then some tips which I found useful, when dyeing with Pisolithus arhizus:
-first boil the mushrooms for several hours, the longer the better
-add some dishwash detergent to the boiling mushrooms and stir the pot for the first hour (I mean really all the time), be careful that the bath won't boil over, it easily does
-leave the mushrooms to the dyebath with yarns
-the longer you leave the yarns to the dyebath, the better, at least for several hours, preferably overnight, this way the color is stronger
-raise the temperature of the dyebath to 90C (almost boiling, but not quite). In lower temperature the color will become lighter
-take the first rinsing water of the yarns and pour it back to the dyebath, there are a lot of pigments in it
-let the already used dyebath sit with mushrooms in it for couple of weeks and you get more color out of it. I don't know why this happens, either the mushrooms release more dye in longer soak, or the dye pigments change to more soluble form and you get more dye which is able to attach to the fiber.

All the yarns which I have dyed with Pisolithus arhizus became variegated, which I am very happy:) They look so lively. Why this happened I still don't know. I don't believe now that leaving the mushrooms in the dyebath was the reason and this morning another Leena (her blog is unfortunately only in Finnish) had found another explanation for it in the Finnish Mushroom Societys web pages (in Finnish): there a short spin-drying is recommeded especilly for Pisolithus dyed yarns right after dyeing to help to get even color. I had noticed that the color of the yarns became darker in the first 30 minutes when I put them outside on a line to dry. Maybe the wetter parts oxidized more and that affected the color?? In the dry yarn the color seems stable.
This is so interesting mushroom!!

I sprinkled some Pisolithus spores in the sandy soil near hour house, I hope the mycelium starts grow and someday I can get Pisolithus from my own back yard, but growing mushrooms is not as easy as growing plants from seeds:)
By the way, Bessettes mushroom book says that this mushroom is also widely distributed in North America. It grows in sandy soils typically under oak and pine and also commonly with Prickly Pear cactus.

Bloom mittens Bloom lapaset

Ilman muuta minulle sopi:)
Englanninkieliset ohjeet näihin lapasiin löytyvät siis Ravelrystä, täältä (Bloom mittens by Mascha2), ja lankoja niihin on nettikaupassani nimellä Bloom-selection, täällä.

In English
Last spring a German knitter bought Sunset selection yarns from me. She had already earlier knitted one of our mittens and from these red and purple yarns she designed her own pattern for mittens and named them Bloom mittens.
In September she sent me pictures of these beautiful mittens and as the basic structure in them is based on our mittens, she asked if it would be ok with me for her to publish the free pattern for them in Ravelry. Of course it was, I was happy that she had designed so beautiful mittens.
So you can now find the free pattern for Bloom- mittens in Ravelry, here (Bloom mittens by Mascha2) and the yarns for Bloom mittens are in my webshop (look for Bloom selection), here. In the front page of the shop, there are always the latest yarns. You can see all dyed yarns when you click Dyed yarns and then Aarni, to see all naturally dyed Aarni yarns. Bloom selection is there on top.

In Bloom selection there are five different colors, dyed with cochineal and madder and the white spot in the picture is actually yellow yarn, dyed with the stems of Red gilled webcap-mushroom. There is more of each color than mentioned in the pattern (like in all my kits). This is because every knitter has different tension and uses different amount of yarn, and if you run out of some of the dyed yarns, I propably don't have the same dyelot left after couple of weeks or months. It is better to be safe than sorry:)

Maschamaschen writes a knitting blog in German here, you can always look at her photos even if you don't speak German.
Congratulations for you beautiful mittens and thank you for letting me introduce them in my blog, Mascha!

My shop Kotisivut ja kauppani

RIIHIVILLA LANGAT
Aarni on pehmeää 2-säikeistä löyhäkierteistä lankaa, tex 200 x 2.
100g lankaa on n 220m
Puikkosuositus 2,5-3,5mm tai käsialan mukaan
Neuletiheys n 25s/10cm
Ukko Sukkalanka on 3-säikeistä tiukkakierteistä lankaa, tex 160 x 3, johon on lisätty 15% nailonia antamaan kestävyyttä.
100g lankaa on n 180m
Puikkosuositus 3-3,5mm tai käsialan mukaan
Neuletiheys n 22s/10cm
Käsinpesu 30C
Tästä langasta saat lämpimät saapassukat syksyn sateisiin tai talven pakkasiin. Käsittelemättömässä langassa on tallella lanoliini, joka pitää lämmön tallella teollisia lankoja paremmin.
Miesten sukkiin langanmenekki on n130-140g, naisten sukkiin n120g, riippuen varren pituudesta.
100g on n 360g
Puikkosuositus 2mm tai käsialan mukaan
Neuletiheys 32s/10cm

In English
Couple of weeks ago our summer season at the market came to end, now only Saturdays are market days and my husband is there then. After the busy season I was running short of my dyed yarns, so now I have dyed almost every day, of course for the Saturday markets, but mostly because now my own web page is about to be ready and with it my SHOP. I am so excited!!!
I don't have as much yarn there yet as I had hoped, but more is coming almost daily, as soon as I have them ready. So, pop in often to see what's new. Also please notice, that I have some yarns only one or two skeins, and sometimes the shop might show that it is still available, and yet it might have been just sold. I hope that won't happen often, but it is possible.

I have had a lot to think about with the shop. One thing was that until now we had only one kind of yarn, and sockyarn, but now there is also a third yarn and we had to figure out names for these different kinds. We wanted the names to be Finnish and reflect our yarn as well as us and so we came up with names that come from Finnish mythology: Aarni, Maahinen and Ukko. As well as being a man's (rare) name, Aarni was thought to be a spirit in the forests, guardian of secrets. Maahinen was thought to be a small creature living in the ground of the forest and Ukko was from heaven. Well, that doesn't relate very well with sock yarn, but ukko is also a synonym of old man, a little old fashioned word and not used much now. To me it brings images of a life in the countryside, where warm socks are needed:)

RIIHIVILLA YARNS

Aarni is soft sport weight yarn with 2 plys and loose twist.
This is our main yarn which you know from the mittens and I have most colors in this yarn.
There are 210 - 220 meters in 100grams (little over 4 ounces)
Gauge recommendation is about 25st/10cm(4 inches)
Needle recommendation is 2,5-3,5mm or according to gauge
Handwash in lukewarm water
This yarn is ideal for sweaters, hats, scarves and mittens, especially in stranded knitting, but it is too soft for adult socks.
Riihivilla mitten kits are from this yarn.

Ukko, yarn for socks is thicker 3-ply yarn with a tight twist and added 15% nailon for more durability.
There is about 180meters in 100grams (little over 4 ounces)
Gauge recommendation is 22st/10cm (4 inces)
Needle recommendation is 3-3,5mm or according to gauge
Handwash in lukewarm water
From this yarn you can make sturdy socks for your boots to keep your feet warm in rainy weather or in freezing winter.
There is natural lanolin left in the wool which keeps warmth better than more processed wools do. Your feet will love it.
This yarn comes now only in natural light grey but I have dyed colors also avaible little by little.
You need about 110-120grams for women's socks and 130-150grams ofr men's socks.

Maahinen is also 2-ply yarn, but it is thinner than Aarni.
There is about 360meters in 100grams (little over 4 ounces)
Gauge recommendation is 32st/10cm (4inches)
Handwash in lukewarm water
This is good yarn for sweaters, hats or mittens, but for scarves it might be a little too harsh.
This yarn comes now only in four natural shades from sheep, but there will also be dyed colors later.

There are small variations in the thicknesses of the yarns, as these are not industrially made yarn. Also skein sizes vary, each skein in my store is weighted by hand before going to store and the price goes according to the weight.

These are the names of the yarn types I have. I can't name all the colors I dye, they are too many, so the dye lot numbers are best way to identify them:)

I have tried to write to my web page all information about us and our yarns and the pages evolve all the time. If you think of something you would like to see in there, please tell me:)

Oh, and the address to my page and shop: http://www.riihivilla.com/
WELCOME AND HUGS!

Mukavien kauppauutisten lisäksi tässä kuva huiveista joita olen kutonut viime viikolla. Molemmat ovat Aarni-lankaa eli tätä meidän peruslankaa. Vihreä samettijaloilla värjättyä ja punainen krapilla värjättyä moniväristä (hmm, en tiedä mikä sana kuvaisi parhaiten tuollaista samaa väriä olevaa kirjavointia). Nämä on tehty isommilla puikoilla mitä käytän lapasten tekemiseen, eli 3mm.
In EnglishIn addition to the wonderful news about my shop, here is a picture of the scarves that I knitted last week. Both are from our old Aarni-yarn (same as mittens). Green yarn was dyed with Velvet Pax -mushroom and the reds were dyed with madder (I call that multicolored, because there are different shades even if the same color, but what might be a better word for that color?) I made these with bigger needles, 3mm, than what I use for making mittens. There are 38 stitches in the red scarf and 40st in the green. The cable in the middle is 6st wide. The red scarf is 120cm long and I used 100grams of yarn for it. Green is longer, 180cm and it took 150grams of yarn to make it.
DH took both of them to the market today and the red one was bought right away by todays first client:)) Good thing we photographed them last night.

Yellows from mushrooms Keltaisia sienivärejä

In English
Last week we took a little vacation and went to visit my parents for couple of days. They live about 200 km north from our home, past Tampere, in the countryside. The ground is more sandy there, so I thought that maybe we could find some Pisolithus arhizus there. The season was a little past them, but the weather was sunny and so we went with my father to try to find Pisolithus mushrooms. No such luck though, the first place where we looked, there was nothing except Suillus bovinus (in the picture above) and some Chalciporus piperatus (these are good dye mushrooms), so then we collected them:)

In English
The other place where we stopped was much better for mushroom hunters, no Pisolithus there either, but different dye Cortinarius mushrooms, Velvet Pax (in much drier places where I am used to seeing them) and the mushrooms in the picture, Tricholomopsis rutilans. Here is Wikipedia page in English about it. Look, how different they look when young or old, in the picture the small mushrooms are just babies, and the big one is older. Below is a closer picture of the young ones and the typical yellow gills.

Purppuravalmuskoja löytyi useammastakin paikasta, osa ihan isoja ja yhteensä saalista tuli niiden osalta yli 700g.
In English
We found more of them, some quite big as you can see in the picture below, total weight of them was over 700grams.

In English
When we returned home I put Cortinarius mushrooms and Velvet Pax (sliced) to the dehydrator, and dyed with the other mushrooms right away.
I had little over 4kilos of Boletus mushrooms (two plastic bags), they were not very wet when the weight would have been more. I knew from past experience that I need a lot of them so after boiling them for one hour and straining the slimy (yak!)liquid, I put only 200grams of alum mordanted yarn to the bath. I simmered it for an hour and then let cool overnight in the bath. The result was nice bright lemony yellow, the left yarn in the picture. Some parts of the yarn were a little darker, some lighter yellow, this doesn't show in the picture, but have had this happen to me also earlier with Boletes. The bath was so thick and slimy even after straining. I am very happy with that color, especially when I almost didn't pick the Boletes:)
The other mushrooms I had, Tricholomopsis rutilans, contain much more dye than Boletes. When I had to use 2kg of Boletes /100g of yarn, with Tricholomopsis 700g was enough to dye 100grams of yarn, and I got a second color from it, Boletes didn't give more color after the initial bath.
I boiled the crushed Tricholomopsis rutilans mushrooms for one hour, strained the liquid and put 100g of alum mordanted wool to the bath. I simmered it for one hour, and then the color was bright golden, but somehow (!) I forgot the yarn to the bath overnight, in the morning it was browner and duller yellow:( The yarn in the right in the picture. So remember not to let the yarn cool in the bath when dyeing with this mushroom! I put another 100grams of alum mordanted yarn to the bath and got nice lighter yellow from it after one hour.
These are not very common mushrooms near our house, but I had dyed with them last year, here in this posting. I wish I had read what I wrote last year, and kept the dyeing time shorter now. But anyway, it is a good mushroom for dyeing and I am very happy we found them:)

Mushrooms... Sienisaalista..

Tänä vuonna sienisaalis on hyvä, samettijalkojen lisäksi verihelttaseitikkejä, veriseitikkejä ja kaneliseitikkejä. Saan mukavasti ystävieni keräämiä värisieniä (kiitos!), kun en itse ehdi tarpeeksi metsään:)

In English
This year is a good mushroom year here, lots of Velvet pax, Tapinella atrotomentosa and different Vebcaps, Cortinarius sanguinea (small all red), Cortinarius semi-sanguineus and Cortinarius cinnamomea (orange-gilled vebcaps). I am lucky to have friends who pick mushrooms for me as I don't have time to go mushroom hunting enough:)

In English
I usually separate caps from stems of Cortianarius semi-sanguineus, but sometimes I dry them also whole. Dyeing with only stems give nice warm orangey yellow and dyeing with only caps give nice red. If the stems and caps are together, the color is more rusty red. Near where we live, there isn't very much Cortinarius sanguineus, which gives red by itself, so I get most of my reds from C.semi-sanguineus caps.
By the way, Värikeskus in Finland sells dried dye mushrooms, also Pisolithus arhizus (100g/10€)

Myös Mushrooms for color- sivuilla on viime tammikuun Funghi and Fibre symposiumin värinäytteitä. Ihanaa meille kaikille, jotka emme voineet osallistua sinne:)

In English
Most mushroom dye books don't give ratios which to use with different mushroom and I have had to learn most of it by experimenting, so that is why I was so excited to see in Theresas blog posting about her dye samples WITH the ratios and which mordant was used. This is very valuable information and I am so happy she has shared it! Thank you Theresa! You can find it in her blog in August 29 posting, scroll down the page. She has other interesting mushroom dyeing in there, too:)
Also Mushrooms for color-pages there are dyesample pictures from Funghi and Fibre symposium last January. So nice for those of us that couldn't make it to the Symposium:)

Pisolithus soup Kuukuskeittoa

Reilu viikko sitten sain ämpärillisen hernekuukusia (Pisolithus arhizus, syn tinctoria)kokeiltavaksi.
In English
A week ago I got from my dyerfriends bucketfull of Pisolithus arhizus (syn tinctoria) mushrooms to try to dye with. I use the latin name for these, because in Finnish there is only one common name for them, but when I googled and read my dyebooks, I found out at least seven different English names for the same mushroom: Dyemaker's False Buffball, Dog Turd Fungus, Dead Man's Fist, Dead Man's Foot, Horse Dung Fungus, Rotten Tooth Fungus and Bohemian Truffle. A little confusing, but if I use the latin name then everyone knows what I am talking about:) I hope. In English you can find more about Pisolithus arhizus for instance in MushroomExpert site.
I have never found these myself, but now that I know what they really look like, maybe I will find some in this part of Finland, too. They are quite big, as you can see them compared to my hand, but about half of them is usually buried in the ground. In Finnish mushrooms online discussion group there are good photos of them. In the first picture there is the growing site, and you can see, it is not easy to find, they look so much like stones.
They grow in both temperate and tropical regions, around the world, and form ectomycorrhizal associations with many trees: conifers, oaks, birches, casuarinas and eucalyptus.

Nämä hernekuukuset olivat jo vanhoja, näkee hyvin, miten kuukusen laki on haljennut ja paljastanut itiöpölyä.
In English
These mushrooms were already quite old and you can see in the photo how the top of the fungus has broken to release the spores.

Tässä sieni leikattuna halki. Sienen ruskea yläosa on kaikki itiöpölyä. Olisipa ollut mielenkiintoista kokeilla värjätä erikseen tummalla kiinteällä osalla ja toisaalta ruskealla itiöpölyllä, mutta näin ensimmäisellä kerralla samaan keittoon menivät kaikki osat.
In English
Here is the picture what it looks like when I cut the mushroom in half. All the cinnamon brown in the top of the mushroom is spore dust. It would have been interesting to dye separately with the top part and the lower solid part of the mushroom, but as this was my first time with these, they all went together to the same bath.

In EnglishI cut 1,5kg of Pisolithus mushrooms to small pieces, the spore dust was literally dust and easy to crush, but there was also a problem with it: it was so hydrofobic that I couldn't get it to mix with water. Luckily I had gotten advise from more experienced Pisolithus dyers to add a drop of dishwash detergent to the water to lower the surface tension and that would help. In spite of it I had to agitate the Pisolithus soup for the first hour so that it didn't boil over, which it seemed to do very easily. Luckily I had been warned about this particular trait of Pisolithus also in advance:) I simmered the bath for about three hours and then let it cool overnight.
Kuivatuilla sienillä värjäyksestä löytyi resepti Allfiberarts'in sivuilta.
No3 on yksi vyyhti tästä ensimmäisestä jälkiväristä, jonka laitoin puoleksi tunniksi kädenlämpöiseen tuhkalipeäveteen (pH9), keltainen väri muuttui jännän hiekanruskeaksi.
In English
I tried to find information about dyeing with Pisolithus in the Internet, because I couldn't find the ratio between mushrooms to yarn in my books with this fungi. I found this recipe with dried fungi in Allfiberarts website.
I strained the bath and removed all the sand in the bottom of the pot (which came from the Pisolithus mushrooms!). The bath looked pretty dark, so I put in 300grams of white premordanted (alum and cream of tartar) yarn. My big pot was full of indigo bath, so I had to use a smaller, 20litres, pot and the yarns were too crowded in it. The surface of the bath looked very dark and the yarns in it, too, but deeper in the pot the liquid was lighter golden color, really uncomprehensible!! The bath was also like thick soup, nothing like a normal dyebath. I suspect the spores had gone through my sieve and the thickness was because of that, but I am not sure.
I raised the temperature to 90C, it almost boiled by mistake, and I tried to keep the yarns moving in the bath. After dyeing for two hours I turned the heat off and let the yarns cool in the bath until next morning. I washed the yarns and there was a lot of loose dye in the couple of first rinses. At first the yarns looked orange but when they dried they now are dark brown with golden streaks, very uneven dyeing:( No1. I don't understand why they came up so uneven. I had dyed yarn from the same mordanting bath in another dyebath and they were ok, nothing like these, so the problem can't be with mordanting, at least I don't think so.
Perhaps the spores had given more color to the parts of yarn they were most in touch with, as the yarns were crowded. I can't think of any other explanation. Has this happened to anyone else with Pisolithus dyeing? At first I thought the yarns were a failure, but the more I look at them, the more fabulous they look:) I wish could do that again!
I then put another 300grams to the first afterbath, white premordanted yarn like before and dyed the same way. The result was no2, that one also a streaked color. No3 is one skein from this bath and I then put it to soak in warm woodash lye (pH9) for thirty minutes.. The yellow turned out to more sand color.
No4 is the second afterbath, 300grams of it, and uneven, too, even though you can't see it in the picture because of the light color.
I boiled the used Pisolithus pieces in the dyebath once more for three hours and next day I put t 200grams of white premordanted yarn to the unstrained bath, in hopes that it would dye the same kind of dark streaked yarn as the first bath. It came out uneven, like I hoped, but not dark, only golden color No5.
I have now dyed with 1,5kg of Pisolithus 1,1kg of yarn, I still have that bath left, but more interesting might be the 200grams of Pisolithus I have soaking in glass jar in wood ash lye... experiments, experiments:)

Little update Vähän kuulumisia

Summer is over now, we had first killing frost couple of nights ago, and even though I had covered my japanese indigos for the night, some of them had frozen. Luckily some of them are still ok, but funny how the frost bitten parts have turned dark indigo blue! I thought about collecting them separately, but I have been too busy with the market and also mushrooms:(
I am still going to use the good leaves and now it is raining again and that means no frost in near future. The japanese indigos inside the greenhouse are ok (I had a heater there) and one plant is growing flowerbuds there.

Elokuun sateet ovat kasvattaneet mahtavan kokoisia samettijalkoja, kuvassa isoimpia, joista suurin painoi yksinään yli kilon!
In English
All the rains have done some good, too. This year the velvet pax mushrooms (Tapinella atrotomentosa, syn Paxillus atrotomentosus) have grown really well, the biggest one in the picture weight by itself over one kilo (almost three pounds)
Myös tällainen ihana lähetys värjäysystäviltä on pitänyt kiireisenä, näistä lisää kunhan saan kaiken liemen värjättyä, langat kuviksi jne. Menee valitettavasti varmaan ensi viikon puolelle:(
In English
I got this wonderful bucket of dye mushrooms from dyer friends and that has kept me busy, more about it when I have all the dye exhausted and pictures of yarns. It won't propably be until next week:(
I guess I have to reveal that it is not what it seems at the first glance, but they really are mushrooms, The Dog Turd Fungus, Pisolithus arhizus (syn Pisolithus tinctoria)

Blue nails Siniset kynnet

In English
Last week I dyed with the rest of my japanese indigoes (Polygonum tinctorium) that grew in the greenhouse, and besides nice blue yarn, I got also blue nails o my left hand:)
I had 700grams of fresh leaves and I cut them to small pieces with scissors. I had lost my other rubberglove, and I thought I didn't need it anyway (I would only cut holes in them when cutting the leaves), so the hand where I held the leaves was without the glove. Last time three weeks ago when I dyed with these plants previously I had no problem with blue staining my nails when cutting the leaves, but it seems there was more indigo in the leaves now. The leaves felt also kind of "oily", which I didn't notice earlier so much. As my hand was already blue after cutting the leaves, I didn't bother to try to find that missing rubberglove for kneading the leaves either.

I had put the cut leaves to cold water where I had added vinegar so that the pH was 3, and now I started to knead the leaves between my hands, first for 10 minutes, and then I strained the liquid. I noticed that the pH was now 4. I added more cold water and vinegar to the leaves and kneaded them for another 10 minutes, strained and repeated this for third time, now I kneaded only for 5 minutes. It is slow and tedious work, besides I wanted to put the yarns to the bath as long as it was very cold. I don't really know if this is important??
Basically I did this the same way as I had described in my earlier posting in July 31st.
To the strained bath I put 200grams of dry yarn, one skein of white yarn and one skein of light grey yarn. I let them sit in the bucket for one hour, then took them out and aired for another hour. They were now nice turqoise, the grey yarn is on the right.

Laitoin hapettuneet langat uudelleen liemeen taas tunniksi. Liemen väri oli muuttnut jo aika tumman vihreäksi.
In English
I put the yarns to the bath again for one hour, the color of the bath was now quite dark green.

Toisen värjäystunnin jälkeen langat olivat jo paljon sinisempiä, hienoa!
In English
After the second hour in the bath the yarns were already much bluer, great!

In English
After airing the yarns for one hour, I put them in the bath for the third time, again for one hour and then airing. Now the color hadn't changed so much, maybe it is a little deeper. The brighter blue in left is also dyed with japanese indigo, but the "normal" way, so at this stage the direct dyed yarns look more grayish blue.

I put another two skeins of white yarn to the bath to soak for the night, 12 hours. In the morning the bath was quite blue and the yarns turned out nice light blue.

I waited four days before I washed the yarns. I was surprised that a lot of color washed out and I had to rinse the yarns much more than the previous direct dyed yarns to get clear rinsing water.
The yarns are now much lighter color than before washing. It seems that a lot of pigment didn't stick to the yarn and was lost. I think cutting and kneading took so much time that the bath was dark green/blue sooner than the first time, when I had less leaves to process. Maybe this had something to do with the lost pigment?? Any ideas?
The result is nice blue, but with the amount of fresh leaves I should have gotten more and darker, I think. My nails are still blue:)

THE USUAL WAY OF DYEING WITH FRESH LEAVES OF JAPANESE INDIGO
Then I dyed the traditonal way with fresh leaves, also from the greenhouse, and now I had 500grams of leaves. The dyeing is similar to the dyeing with fresh woad but there are important differences, which I luckily found in the archives of natural dyes discussion group and I also got good advice from fellow dyers. Whatever would I do without the internet! Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences and knowledge:)
I put the whole fresh leaves to a glassjar and poured tapwater over them, the temperature was about 45C. I then put the jar to a big kettle filled with water like a double boiler. According to the recipe the temperature should raise slowly during two hours to 70C, not higher.
After the first hour the temperature of the water in my double boiler was 60C and after the second hour it was 65C. After the first hour I noticed that the water level in the jar had dropped, and so I added some more to fill the jar. Now when I think about it, I don't know it that was right or wrong??

After two hours the liquid in the jar was still quite clear, in the top of the jar it was bluish. I was a little worried because according to the recipe the color should have turned to sherry coloured and the leaves more olive and I didn't notice very much change in my jar. What do you think?

After two hours I strained the liquid to a kettle and as soon as it went through the sieve and hit the bottom of the kettle, it turned blue with blue froth! What a relief:) I added 50grams (about 5 tablespoons) of washing soda to the liquid and it turned to almost black. Even though there was already blue froth, I took the food mixer (I don't know what it is called in English) and used it for 5 minutes. Right from the beginning there was a lot of dark blue froth and even though the recipe said to mix for 10 minutes, I only did it for 5 minutes, as there seemed to be no change after couple of first minutes. Should I have continued it longer??

After mixing I added more water to the kettle (total was now about 8 litres), the temperature was 45C. I now added 20grams (two tablespoons) of sodium hydrosulfite and let it be for 30 minutes. The temperature was now 50C.
On top of the liquid there was a dark blue oil-like sheen, but when I added 200grams of white yarn to the bath you can see in the picture how it was now pale yellow.
Langat tulivat kauniin kirkkaan sinisiksi.
Samassa liemessä tuntui olevan vielä väriä jäljellä, joten laitoin sinne yhden valkoisen vyydin ja toisen pietaryrtillä keltaiseksi värjätyn vyyhdin, annoin värjääntyä 20min ja hapetin.
Väriä riitti kolmanteenkin värjäykseen, 100g valkoista lankaa.
Narulla nämä ovat oikealta vasemmalle.

I left the yarns in the bath for 15 minutes, then oxidized them for 30 minutes. I dipped these yarns twice more to the bath, 10 minutes each time and oxidized 20 minutes in between. They became beautiful bright blue.
There seemed to be color left in the bath, so I put 100grams of white yarn and 100grams of yeallow yarn dyed with tansy, to the bath for 20 minutes an came up with nice green and light blue.
There was still color left for yet another 100grams of white yarn, and that came out very light blue.
All these yarns are in the picture from right to left.
Viimeisin värjäys tuli aika vaaleaksi, liemi näytti nyt samean keltaiselta, ei kirkkaalta, niinkuin alussa. Eli 500g lehtiä värjäsi 500g sinistä lankaa:)
Pesin langat seuraavana päivänä ja niistä irtosi hyvin vähän väriä, jo toinen huuhteluvesi oli kirkasta.

After the last dyeing the bath looked now muddy yellow, and it didn't seem to give any more blue. From 500grams of fresh leaves I got 500grams of blue yarn:)
I washed these yarns the next day and very little pigment left in the washing, already the second rinsing water was clear.

I put the strained leaves back to the glassjar and poured warm water over them (50C) and let sit overnight. I though to try if there were any more pigments left in the leaves. In the morning the temperature was 25C and the liquid was reddish brown.

After straining, adding washing soda and mixing for 10 minutes the liquid was bluish, but there was very little froth and even that was very light blue. Not promising.
I dyed with this 200grams of yarn and got very very pale blue, not good and I have already overdyed it.
So now I believe that most of the pigments are in that first extract:)
Otherwise I am very pleased with these experiments. As these were my first attempts to dye with fresh leaves I am now more confident to try dyeing with bigger amount of leaves.
