Solar dyeing with goldenrod and mystery Aurinkovärjäys piiskujen lehdillä ja mysteeri

IN ENGLISH
I have already this summer dyed couple of times with leaves of goldenrods, and even though books say that they should be used for dyeing in the beginning of flowering, I have gotten good yellows even now, when they are not even in bud yet. I also like to use rather leaves (with flowering tops if there are them) than flowers alone, I have the impression that the yellow from the leaves is more lightfast than the color from flowers, I suspect there are different dyes in leaves and flowers, but don't know for sure. I think the dyes from leaves don't dissolve so easily to neutral or acid water as the dyes from flowers do, and that is why I use alkaline water to extract the color from leaves (our well water is on the acidic side). The stems of goldenrods don't give color much so it is better to rip the leaves from the stems and use only leaves, this also saves space in the pot.

I wanted to try solar dyeing with goldenrod leaves, here is a post where this experiment started.

IN ENGLISH
The yarns in the jar seemed to become darker yellow day by day and the leaves started to look browner and used. The liquid started to ferment on day 2, and day 4 it overflowed and I had to put it back (that is why the plates under the jars are good). The pH of the liquid had also dropped but I didn't raise it any more because the color seemed to come off nicely from the leaves. The temperature was about 40°C during the daytime and about 20°C during the nights. The red jars are madder.

IN ENGLISH
On Day 8 I took the yarns from the jar, and shame on me, I hadn't looked after the jar in the final couple of days and it had over flowed again and the leaves and the yarn on top of the jar were above the liquid and dry. In the picture above the brown leaves. Anyway, when I took the yarn away the parts of it which were on top and on the sides of the jar were strongest golden yellow and the parts of the skeins which were in the middle of the jar, packed tight with the leaves, were palest yellow. Perhaps the heat didn't get in the middle so well, I can't think of other reason. The result was ok, though if there had been more room it would have been more even color.
What was interesting about this dyeing was that the strongest color was very warm golden yellow, where as  with leaves collected the same time and dyed with hot method (soaked first also in alkaline water for couple of days in a bucket as I normally do), the color was strong cold lemon yellow (in the second picture below, the yarn in the left). Clearly different dyes extracted/attached in the solar dyeing than in hot dyeing.

IN ENGLISH
I didn't have time to do anything with the bath for couple of days, but then I strained it and used for dyeing again with yarn mordanted with alum and cream of tartar. Below is how it looked then, really red, and so was the yarn, and not a trace of yellow. You would think  my jars and buckets got mixed up but that didn't happen, this is the left over bath from goldenrod solar dye. The pH was about 6.

Punainen väri ei kuitenkaan pysynyt langassa vaan irtosi pesussa. Lopputulos oli vaalea persikanvärinen millaista en ole koskaan ennen saanut piiskuilla (mutta kylläkin koivunlehdillä on jälkivärjäyksessä tullut sama ilmiö), alakuvassa keskellä. Vasemmalla on normaali kuumavärjäyksellä saatu väri piiskujen lehdistä nyt, ja oikealla aurinkovärjäyksessä tullut lanka.

IN ENGLISH
Too bad the red color didn't attach to the yarn, but most of it rinsed off. The result was pale peach color, something I had never gotten from goldenrods (but with birch leaves after bath I have come across the same color in the bath and yarns). In the left is the color from normal hot dyed goldenrod leaves, and on the right the color I got with solardyeing.

Kunpa vaan saisi tuon liemen punaisen kiinnittymään lankaan!
No, onneksi piiskuista tulee hyviä keltaisia kuitenkin sekä kuumavärjäyksessä että aurinkovärjäyksessä, ainakin näillä helteillä.

IN ENGLISH
The bath was still red, and I dyed another patch of yarn with it, no 2 in the picture, and also third time with unmordanted yarn, no 3, which took also the color, though a little paler. I have still saved the bath and it is looking red. There must be tannins in the leaves of goldenrods, and they got extracted during solar dyeing, the bath looks just like baths from barks containing tannins, and so do the yarns. I only wish I knew how to get that color to stay in the yarns!
Well, anyway goldenrods give good yellows in hot and solar dyeing when it is hot like now.

Follow-up to Hydnellum solar dyeing Tuloksia aurinkovärjäyksestä tuoksuorakkaalla

Alla olevassa kuvassa on miltä purkki näytti toisen päivän aamuna.

IN ENGLISH
In the beginning of July we got warm and sunny weather and I set up solar dyeing jars in the greenhouse, also some experiment jars like the one with mushroom Hydnellum suaveolens. Here is what all looked in the beginning. I had 50grams of dried fungi and 24 grams of yarn mordanted with alum and cream of tartar. There were also control pieces of unmordanted yarn and yarn mordanted with rhubarb leaf (400% rhubarb). I poured alkaline water, pH 11 made alkaline with washing soda, over the mushrooms and wet yarn, and very soon the liquid looked dark brown.
In the picture below is how it looked in the morning of day 2.

IN ENGLISH
In the night of day 2 I noticed that the contents had started to ferment and there was a lot of foam. I opened the lid a little, because I was afraid the pressure would get too big otherwise. Fermenting had lowered the pH but it was still alkaline, also the color of the liquid was not lighter brown. The sun heated the jars very nicely, during the daytime the temperature inside the jars was about 40°C and at nights about 20°C.

Lisäsin hiukan kidesoodaa jotta pH nousi taas 8:aan.

IN ENGLISH
In day 4 it looked like this, the pH had dropped to 7, and the liquid had gotten more pale, fermenting had slowed down. I added some more washing soda to raise the pH to 8.

Yhdeksäs päivä

Day 9

IN ENGLISH
On Day 9 I took the yarn from the jar and in the picture below is what it looked like right after I took it out: boring greyish color.

IN ENGLISH
I let the yarn oxydize on the line for two hours, and first the color changed to light greyish lilac, and then after a while it became pale spotty blueish green in parts where it got most light. I washed the yarn, and it didn't change color during washing, but after when it was drying on the line in the shade of an apple tree, it turned to more greenish. The piece of yarn which had no mordant became pale pinkish and the one with rhubarb leaf mordant became slightly darker but there was no significant difference to the rhubarb leaf color.

In the picture below there is for comparison the turqoise yarn which I had gotten from the same mushrooms with hot dyeing and ammonia (not washing soda). So this mushroom is not so good for solar dyeing, and it gives better colors in hot, but nevertheless it was interesting, I have never gotten pale pink for unmordanted wool from these mushrooms, and also the color changes when it was on the line were something to think about. Also I am now wondering if I should have taken the yarn our from the jar already on day 3 or 4. Or use ammonia instead of washing soda. Perhaps I should set up another experiment when it becomes sunny again later this week..

Pöydän alla olevassa ämpärissä on käymässä paatsamankuorta emäksisessä liemessä, toivottavasti onnistuu tänä kesänä.

IN ENGLISH
It is now getting warm and sunny also here in Finland and so yesterday I set up more dyeing in the glass jars in my greenhouse. The temperatures have been so low especially at nights up until now that it was way too cool for dyeing with no other heat, but now it is going to be better.
I have dyed with madder already since May when it was warmer, but last couple of weeks were even too cold for madder, at nights less than 10°C for a long time, and the color I got was not as dark and red as when the temperature in the tub went up to 30°C in the daytime and around 20°C at nights. I have written more about my madder dyeing here.
The bucket below the table is fermenting buckthorn bark in alkaline bath, I hope it works this summer.

Punaisissa purkeissa väri on voimistunut odotetusti.

IN ENGLISH
I have put dyestuffs and mordanted yarn in layers in the jars, the red ones are madder and cochineal. The brownish small jar on the left is an experiment with mushroom Hydnellum suaveolens, and alkaline water in it, made alkaline with washing soda, because the dyes in those kind of mushrooms need alkaline environment to be released. Ammonia would have been better, but I didn't have any and besides it evaporates easily. Even after ten minutes the liquid in the jar had changed to dark brown. It'll be interesting to see how it works in lower temperature than normal simmering.

The big jar on the right is filled with fresh goldenrod leaves and mordanted yarn, and I filled also this jar with alkaline water (pH8, 1 tbs washing soda/4litres of warm water), because my previous experience is that dyes from many green plants don't release well in low temperatures in neutral water, but alkaline water helps. Here are some experiences with birch leaves, and I'm quite positive that if I had used alkaline water also then, the result had been better.

The picture below is of the same jars this morning, less than 24 hours after I set them up, and the goldenrod yarn has already turned yellow, and also the yarn in the mushroom jar is now brownish yellow. The reds have become darker. I will leave these jars in the sun for about ten days now.
The plates under the jars are because especially madder starts to ferment and the liquid may overflow after some days.

- kannattaa kokeilla erilaisia kasveja/kuoria sekaisin samassa purkissa

IN ENGLISH
Some tips from my experiences in our climate.
- yarn should be pre mordanted and also try mordanting part of the yarn with alum and part with iron, the result can be surprising. Remember to rinse your mordanted yarns well before you put them in the jars, especially if you mordant with more than one mordant. Some dyes like madder or rhubarb root don't need mordanting necessarily though the color may be different when a mordant is used.
- glass jars are good because in them the heat from sun goes straight everywhere. In buckets and tubs move the yarns several times a day, so that the warm water in the top mixes better with the colder water in the bottom. Also you can turn the jars around once in a while so that the shade part of the jar gets warmth too, otherwise you get different color in the shade part.. which would be good sometimes.
- in buckets you can dye more even colored yarn than in the glass jars
- use plants and dyestuffs which you know will produce strong color, in solar dyeing you most often need more plant material than in hot dyeing. Dried dyes take less room and so there is more room for the yarn in the jar than when you use fresh plant material. For example, in the goldenrod jar I used 500grams of fresh leaves to 100grams of yarn and even in the big jar I could only stuff 200grams of yarn.
- madder is the best for solar dyeing, and even a small amount of madder gives oranges if you mix it with other yellow giving plants. Using more gives reds.
- it is better to use too much dyestuff than too little (and you won't get dissappointed), and after solar dyeing you can use the same dyestuff in the normal hot dyeing so it won't go to waste even if you use much.
- try mixing different plant materials and barks in the same jar
- the best in my experience (in hotter countries this is probably different) are madder, rhubarb roots, buckthorn and alder barks, and I use also cochineal (though it is better in hot dyeing and I always use it in hot dyeing after solar dyeing to get all the color from the bugs). Some mushrooms are ok, but mostly they are better in hot dyeing and they tend to smell really bad in long solar dyeing. All strong yellow giving plants are wort trying also in solar dyeing, especially if using alkaline water.
- you get more even color if the dye bath is simmered and extracted from the plants the normal way, and then poured over the yarns and left in the sun, but it is easy to get semisolid or multicolored yarns with solar dyeing when plants and yarns are in close contact from the beginning.
- experiment and enjoy the surprises, solar dyeing is easy and fun and after setting up the jars all you need to do is wait .. and in the meantime you can dye something else.

Planting more bedstraws and madder in the dye garden Mataroiden istutusta värikasvimaalle

IN ENGLISH
Yesterday I planted some more plants in the dye garden. These are all perennial plants which have to grow at least three years before harvesting, and all produce red dye from their roots.

Asperula tinctoria, Dyer's woodruff, is in the picture above and below. The plants were quite slender and I planted them about 25 cm apart, I don't know if that is right or not, this is all an experiment for me. In the first picture there are also big madder plants behind the path.

Olin tilannut Saksasta etelänpaimenmataran (Galium mollugo) siemeniä ja haluan nähdä miten se eroaa pihassa luontaisesti kasvavasta paimenmatarasta (Galium album). Taimia tuli kuitenkin vain yksi.  Aiemmin olin kirjoittanut siitä täällä.

IN ENGLISH
I had ordered seeds of Galium mollugo from Germany and from them I have now one plant. I want to see how it differs from Hedge Bedstraw, Galium album, which grows naturally around my garden. I had previously written about it here.

IN ENGLISH
I had also some seedlings, only seven, from Northern bedstraw, Galium boreale. They had grown really well though they germinated only this spring.

IN ENGLISH
Northern bedstraw starts to flower here before Hedge Bedstraw, and they have also difference in the leaves. Northern bedstraw has four leaves in whorl and Hedge Bedstraw has 6-8 leaves in whorl. I have written about them also here.

IN ENGLISH
The next picture is wild madder (Rubia peregrina). I got this plant from England last summer, and I kept them in my root cellar over the winter, just in case, and then planted them outside earlier in the spring. They have started to grow really slowly, at least compared to madder plants, and after next winter I'll see if they survive here outside.

IN ENGLISH
The next ones are wild madder plants which germinated this spring, 11 plants. I should have planted them 50cm apart, same as madder, but I now planted them 25cm apart and if all are alive next spring (I hope they are!), I will move every other plant somewhere else so that they will have more room to grow.

I planted also four seedlings of madder, which had germinated this spring, but I don't have a picture of them. Now my madder bed is quite full and I don't have more space for them. I have some space reserved for more Hedge Bedstraw in the autumn, now there is japanese indigo growing in that bed.

IN ENGLISH
In my actual dye beds there is some japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria), and I didn't have horticultural fleece over it to protect from the cold. I should have had it, we have had several nights in June when the temperature was only +3°C at nights, this has been unusually cold June (after the hot May). The growth is not good and the leaves show some red which I think is from the cold.

Vertailuksi harson alla oleva väritatar on ihan eri näköistä, tuuheaa ja rehevää.

IN ENGLISH
To compare here is some japanese indigo which has had fleece for protection, and it looks much better.

Väritatarta kasvaa kolmessa penkissä varsinaisen puutarha puolella, kesäinen näkymä puutarhasta eilen. Harson alla on siis väritatarta, mutta toivottavasti ensi viikolla jo uskaltaisi ottaa harson pois:) Eilen olikin nätti ja lämmin päivä, tänään on taas viileämpää ja satanut vähän.

I have three beds of japanese indigo in other part of the garden, here is garden view from yesterday. Under the fleece are some of my japanese indigos, but I hope I can take the fleece off soon. Yesterday the weather was nice and warm, but today it is rainy and colder (+12°C) again.

Colors from last week-end Juhannuksen värjäyksiä

Muutamia kuvia viikonlopun värjäyksistä. Indigopatani on ulkona, metsäpuutarhassa. Teen keväällä indigoliemen, jota käytän koko kesän, lisään vain aina joka kerran hiukan pienempään purkkiin tekemääni indigokyyppiä ja pelkistysainetta (harmi kun ilmasto Suomessa, puhumattakaan tänä kesänä, on liian kylmä luontaiselle käymiskyypille). Nämä värjäykset on siis tehty ulkomaisella indigojauheella, mikä on peräisin El Salvadorista. Omien indigokasvieni, väritattaren ja morsingon sato ajoittuu pääosin vasta loppukesään, vaikka vielä minulla on jäljellä yksi purkki valmiiksi uutettua viime vuotista väritatarlientä. Olen säästänyt sitä tiettyyn siniseen mitä tarvitaan Kellot-lapaspakettiin, ihan siltä varalta, että aiemmin värjätty sininen loppuu ennen uuden sadon valmistumista.

IN ENGLISH
Here are some pictures of what I dyed last week-end.
My indigovat is outside, in my small woodland garden. I use the same vat all summer, only adding more stock indigo and reducing agent when needed (our weather is too cold for natural fermentation, too bad). These blue yarns were dyed with powdered natural indigo from El Salvador. My own grown indigo plants are ready for harvesting mostly later in the summer and autumn, though I do still have one jar of japanese indigo extraction left from last autumn. I am saving it for certain blue which I need for Bellflowers mitten kit, just in case I run out of that blue before my new crop of japanese indigo is ready for harvesting.

Keitin myös kuukauden liossa olleita kuivia pajunlehtiä. Käytän paljon noita vihreitä juureksille tarkoitettuja verkkopusseja lehtien ja muiden värikasvien keitossa, kasviaines on helppoa silloin nostaa pois liemestä keiton jälkeen.

IN ENGLISH
I also boiled dry willow leaves which had been soaking for a month. I use a lot  plastic net bags, meant for potatoes and carrots, the plant material is easy to lift off the bath when they are in that kind of bags.

Värjäsin niillä pajunlehdillä valkoista ja indigolla harmaansiniseksi värjättyä lankaa josta sitten tuli harmahtavan vihreää.

IN ENGLISH
I dyed with those willow leaves white yarn and also greyish blue (from indigo) yarn , which then became greyish green.

Dyeing with Mountain Bluet Värjääminen vuorikaunokilla

IN ENGLISH
There are many clumps of Mountain Bluet (Centaurea montana) in the garden, and I have used it for dyeing yellow in some years.  It is related to Brown Knapweed (Centaurea jacea) which is a good dye plant, and according to this  (scroll up to page 217) also Mountain Bluet contains luteolin and apigenin flavonoids. The yellow I got from Mountain Bluet this year is different than the yellow I get from Brown Knapweed, so there are some differences in the dyestuffs, or the other explanation is that I didn't soak the plants long enough for the bath to start to ferment and dyes become more available.
It is good to cut the flower stems down before it sets seeds (although my garden is not so tidy, but perhaps one day it will be..) so why not use it for natural dyeing.

Tein pienemmän koevärjäyksen pari viikkoa sitten kun kukinta oli parhaimmillaan ja värjäsin isomman erän kukinnan loppuvaiheessa, enkä huomannut eroa saadussa värissä, vaikkakin väriliemi oli kukinnan alussa tulleista kasveista vihreämpi ja myöhemmin sitten ruskeamman keltainen. Silti alunapuretettuun lankaan väri tarttui samanlaisena vaaleana sitruunankeltaisena.

Käytin 1kg kukkavarsia/100g lankaa, ja varmaankin jos olisin riipinyt lehdet varsista puolet tuosta määrästä olisi riittänyt, koska paksut varret olivat painavia ja luulen väriaineiden olevan enemmän kuitenkin lehdissä.
Liotin 1-2 vrk lievästi emäksisessä vedessä, mihin olin lisännyt pari ruokalusikallista kidesoodaa, ja sitten haudutin pilkottuja kasveja kunne ne näyttivät tarpeeksi käytetyiltä, eli pari kolme tuntia.

IN ENGLISH
I dyed a small patch first couple of weeks ago when the flowers were young, and then a bigger patch this week when the flowers were starting to go over, and I didn't notice much difference in the color on white wool between the patches, although the bath from young plants looked more greenish yellow compared to the brownish yellow bath from plants which were almost finished flowering. Yet the color to white alum mordanted wool came out pale lemon yellow from both baths.

I used 1 kg of plants to 100grams of wool, but if I had stripped the leaves from the stems, half of that amount would have probably been enough, because the stems were so thick and heavy and I doubt that there were much dyestuff in the stems. I soaked the cut plants 1-2 days in warm water where I had added some washing soda to raise the pH a little, and then I simmered them until they looked done, about three hours.

IN ENGLISH
The color I got from Mountain Bluet this way was lemon yellow (but not beige), and when I dyed blue yarn (blue from japanese indigo) I got nice greenish turqoise which I wanted. I had also a small piece of unmordanted yarn in the bath and it came out very very pale, almost no color.
Mountain Bluet is not as good dye plant as Brown Knapweed or Goldenrods, but ok anyway.

Pictures from dye garden Kuvia värikasvimaalta

Kaikki kasvaa kovaa vauhtia.

IN ENGLISH
Everything grows so fast. Here are some pictures from my beds for perennial dye plants. Annual japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) grows elsewhere in the garden among the edible plants, and it is now covered with horticultural fleece so I don't have pictures of it now, I'll take them later as well as of Dyer's Coreopsis (Coreopsis tinctoria). Also woad (Isatis tinctoria) planted this year is growing near the greenhouse. In the picture above is a flowering second year woad plant. I cut the flower stems down from most of them so that they grow leaves and I can dye with them in a couple of weeks.

Tarkoitukseni olisi istuttaa tuohon penkkiin villin krapin (Rubia peregrina) taimet hiukan myöhemmin.

IN ENGLISH
Last year my weld (Reseda luteola) germinated and grew badly, and from those plants only these four survived over winter. Well, anyway now I get new seeds and a small dye from these plants once they flower. I'm going to plant my wild madder (Rubia peregrina) plants to the empty space in this bed.

IN ENGLISH
Sawwort (Serratula tinctoria) has survived winter well and they are now starting to grow flower stems. I thought they would be bigger plants but perhaps they become more bushy when they get older. I'm going to dye with them already this year, though I'm going to save some plants so they can set seeds and I get more of them, now there are only about twenty plants.

IN ENGLISH
The stems of Dyer's Broom (Genista tinctoria) died again to the ground in the winter, but the new shoots are growing well and by the end of the summer I will get good golden yellows from these plants.

Tässä on etualalla krappia (Rubia tinctoria), niiden oikealla puolella tarhapiiskuja (Solidago sp), ja sumakki (Rhus typhina). Polun takana on pensasväriherneitä.

IN ENGLISH
Here in the foreground grows madder (Rubia tinctoria) and to the right from it goldenrods (Solidago sp) and staghorn sumach (Rhus typhina). Behind the path there are dyer's broom. Behind the goldenrods there is one plant of comfrey (Symphytum officinale), a dark violet flowering form. I planted it there many years ago when I got it and although I had transplanted it to another place in the garden, it grew back here from a small piece of root left in the ground (not intentionally). I don't use this as a dye plant, although it is said to give color, but I never succeeded when I have tried to dye with blue flowering Prickly comfrey (Symphytum asperum) which I have several plants. I got only beige from it. Sometimes I would like to try once more, especially since I have to cut it down anyway before the seeds ripen.

IN ENGLISH
The two small madder plants on the right are the ones I dug up in May, took most of the big roots and planted them back with only small roots. Before digging them up they were as big as the one plant in the left. The rain couple of days ago flattened some of the stems and I'm now thinking that maybe I will mulch them so that they would grow more roots along the stems, I have heard that they could do it. I will have to try it!

IN ENGLISH
Finally this picture. Last autumn I got seeds of Bog Myrtle (Myrica gale) from a gardening friend. Bog myrtle grows as native plant around her summer cottage by the lake in middle of Finland. There were quite a lot of seeds and it seems they all have germinated, what am I going to do with these all!  I will have to prick out them now and after the plants have grown bigger I think I will plant only some in the garden and most near the lake behind our house. Bog Myrtle is a traditional dye plant, it gives yellow, what else, but it should be quite light fast yellow so that is why I wanted to have it in the dye garden.

More dyeing in the spring Lisää keväisiä värjäyksiä

IN ENGLISH
I was cleaning my storage shed in the spring and found some bags of dried leaves of willow and alder. They were very old, at least 15 years old, and since they were stored in paper bags they had gotten moldy. I wanted to try if they yield any color before I throw them in the compost.
I used 200 grams of dried leaves to 100 grams of yarn. I soaked the leaves first for two weeks in slightly alkaline water, simmered them and strained the bath. The willow leaves gave a nice quite strong brownish yellow (the yarns were mordanted with alum and cream of tartar), it is the stronger color in the picture below. The same kind of moldy alder leaves didn't give much color, it is the paler yarn in the same picture. It was surprising how well the willow leaves had contained the dyestuffs, even though they were so old and moldy.

IN ENGLISH
I had also some dried caps of Cortinarius semisanguineus mushrooms which had gotten moldy, and they also gave color despite the mold. I had used 50grams of dried mushroom to 100grams of yarn.

IN ENGLISH
I also had a bucket where I had kept left over rhubarb roots and cochineal, which I had used for solar dyeing last year. They looked still good and red, but I got practically no color to the yarns. I have to remember to either use them again right after solar dyeing if I want more color from them, or just throw the used dyestuffs to the compost. I think cochineal doesn't store well wet or as bath anyway, but of course it stores well when dry.

Another dye dud was a bag of mixed dry tooth fungi (mostly Hydnellum aurantiacum) which I remember being collected too young and that is why I didn't use them last autumn and they were left laying around. Anyway I boiled them in alkaline bath, but never got any good color from them.

IN ENGLISH
Now I have already started the summer dyeing with fresh plants, and set up my indigo pot outside.
In the greenhouse I have madder in a big tub with yarns and it works well now that the days are warm.
