Lisää keltamokeltaista More celandine dyeing

Yesterday I collected more celandine, earlier Pirkko commented that celandine is a bad weed in France, it could be that here too, at least it seeds itself freely wherever it finds space and light in my garden, under bushes..by my vegetable garden..near compost, almost anywhere. I hope that it stays here, but by collecting them now, I stop them from spreading too much.

I got 5kg of celandines now, the flowering was almost over and there were seedpods already. I soaked them over night and then simmered slowly for six hours (day just went by and I had other things to do). I strained the liquid and put 500grams of white alum-premordanted yarn in the bath. It turned nice yellow almost immediately, I simmered it in 80C for an hour and let the yarns cool in the bath over night. Now I am washing them, but the color is as nice as before, almost the same color, even the plants were older.

I also tried if the second bath would give any color, put 300grams of yarn in it, but the color came out very light beige, almost no color at all. I tried adding 4 grams of iron in the bath, but the color hardly changed at all. Well, I will overdye that yarn with something else later, maybe indigo or cochineal, and get better color.

  2. Hi,

I meant 80 degrees Celscius, so that it does't boil, but close.
I think celandine gives best color before it flowers or when the flowers are still in bud.
