

Käytin krappia saman verran kuin lankaakin ja ylimmäisessä kuvassa on näitä ensimmäisiä lankoja. Pieni tumma vyyhti oli tumman harmaata alunperin, tuo on ainoa mitä on jäljellä siitä, loput on jo myyty. 1769 on värjätty vaaleanruskealle lampaanväriselle langalle, ja 1755 vaalean harmaalle, muut valkoiselle. Kaikissa on ollut alunalla esipuretus, ei viinikiveä. Muita paitsi tuota tumminta on jäljellä useita satoja grammoja (ja myyn niitä 10E/100g).

In September I washed the last yarns that had been in the greenhouse in buckets with madder, you can read about how I started that under label Cold dyeing. Some of the yarns had been with madder more than a month, some shorter time. I didn't notice any big difference in color after first week in the bucket. In August the temperature was lower, especially at nights, that might have slowed down the dyeing process. I think that next summer I will keep the yarns with madder for one to two weeks, maybe that is enough, but I will start then in June and so have more time to experiment.
The fermenting stopped in September, but I didn't get mold in the buckets. Little fermenting bubbles turned to white, but they still smelled like sour pickles.
I used equal amount of madder to yarn in the first bath and in the top picture there are these yarns. The darkest brown is madder dyed on dark grey (natural) yarn, I have sold it already, I have only that small sample left. 1769 is dyed on natural medium brown yarn, and 1755 on natural light grey yarn, the two other colors are dyed on white yarn. I have several hundred grams of these colors left to sell (10Euros/100grams).

After the first yarns, I took the madder and simmered them gently for an hour to extract more color. I let them cool and put them back to the bucket in the greenhouse and then added new alum mordanted yarns, this time half of the weight of the madder. The color was now more orangey and lighter of course. Apparently the yellow dyestuffs started to come out, even though the actual dyeing happend in the greenhouse in maybe 20C or cooler. 1738 was dyed on natural grey yarn and 1739 on white yarn.

Seuraavaksi täytyykin taas värjätä krapilla ihan tavallisesti padassa, varmaan väreistä tulee erilaisia, vaikka krappi onkin samaa.

The yarns above are all from the same madder bucket, dyed in succession in August-September. 1768 on the right was the first (800grams of madder and the same amount of white yarn) in that pot and then temperatures were still warm in August. In the middle 1767 was dyed in the begininng of September and then it was much cooler already. It's color doesn't have any yellow, it is very nice rose red to me. On the left 1770 was the last dye from this pot, there was only 300grams of if and if the temperature had been higher I am sure it would have become darker, but the fermenting had stopped by that time and now it is pale red. I didn't heat madder at all in this dyeing (like the ones in the middle picture).
Next I have to dye madder normally in the pot with low heat and shorter time, I think the colors may be different then, even when I use the same madder.
I am new to this subject and I hope to learn more. I was wondering if the yarn has an odor after being dyed and if so how do you get rid of the odor.

I washed the yarns afterwards with Ecover wool detergeant and I also use a little vinegar in the final rinse, and there was no special odor after that. My undyed yarns smell like sheep, but these didn't have that either any more.
ReplyDeleteIt is the same with many dyestuffs and mushrooms, they might smell really bad but the yarn is ok after it has been washed.
The yarn soaked in the dye bath for several months???? The yarn won't turn moldy?
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have believed that either before this summer:) I think the trick that prevents the yarns from getting mold is that the dyebasth must begin to ferment, I wrote about that in the earlier post in july, (easier to find under label cold dyeing).Most of the yarns were in the bath only for about 2-3 weeks, but one lot was there about 5 weeks.
