Louisas comment to my last posting reminded me of when three years ago I dyed with second year woad leaves early in May. That resulted also pinkish color, but with no blue in it, I had written about it here. At the time I thought that is was because the leaves were second year leaves or because I had fertilized them very little, but last summer I dyed with second year woad leaves and got good blue. That was in late June. Now when I read and looked the pictures about the dyeing three years ago, I think that the extraction lasted too long and it was too hot for too long, or at least that is part of the reason why I didn't get blue.
If any of my woad leaves have survived the winter I will try to dye with them again in May, like three years ago, and again in June, to see if there is a difference.

About understanding natural dyes Luonnonvärien ymmärtämisestä
Sain jokin aika sitten minulle uuden kirjan, Su Grierson: The Colour Cauldron, the history and use of natural dyes in Scotland, painettu v 1986.
Siksi määrien antaminen on vaikeaa.

Some time ago I got a new book (for me), Su Grierson: The Color Couldron, The history and use of natural dyes in Scotland, printed in 1986. The writer has done a lot of research about the history and also experimented herself for 12 years. She doesn't give exact recipes, but emphasises how many small things affect natural dyes, where and how the plants grew to the weather, and small details in the dye process. And how important it is to really understand the plant you use so that you are able to use it at the right time to get the best result. You learn best from your own experience and from your own observations. How to get the strongest possible color and the best fastness were the guarded secrets passed from dyer to another in early times, before industrial revolution. Since 1800 when industrial dyeing arrived, imported dyestuffs (indigo, madder, logwood..) which had consistent strength were used, and so more exact recipes were created.
These kind of recipes don't however always work with plants you collect yourself from the nature or grow in your garden, and here you own experience is valuable. You have to know when and in which conditions the plant has the best amount of dye pigment in it, when it is ready for harvest, and how to release the dye best from each kind of plant. If the weather had been unfavourable to a particular dye plant, there isn't enough dye pigment in it to get a strong color, so you have to use more plants than you would need if the weather had been different. That is why exact recipes don't always work. You must see from the dye bath if it is strong enough for bigger amount of yarn or only for smaller amount, and you learn this by experience. Basically it is always better to have rather too strong bath than too weak, although you can always dye paler colors again in a new bath.
What is more fascinating than observing plants in your own garden from day to day or in the wild, and experiment with them. Many of these things can't be learned quickly from the books (although books are a great help), it takes time to understand natural dyes!
I noticed again how important the notes are, both in understanding plants and dyeing, when I recently read my old notebook from 1990s when I had dyed the first time with my own grown weld. I had used twice as much plants as I use now and still the result had been a disappointment to me, very pale yellow. Yet I knew that weld had been highly regarded dye plant, and I knew I should have gotten better color from it. Luckily I had written down that I had harvested the plants when they were beginning to flower, and looking back now this was probably a reason for my failure. I didn't know it then (but I do now), that weld has the biggest amount of dye pigment when the first seeds start to ripen. Also I had boiled the leaves for a long time, and also that was wrong. It is important to write even small details down, so that then you can later find the reasons easier for your successes or failures and so you can grow as a dyer.
Another example is from last summer when it was the fourth year I had grown and dyed with japanese indigo. I was pleased with myself that now I know how to do this, but not a chance. Some plants grew in my greenhouse, shaded by the large grape wine from the above. I harvested some of them in August and did the extraction like I usually do, but to my surprise I didn't get the usual blue but instead very light reddish blue color, the two bottom colors in the picture below. The color didn't darken with extra dippings. I already suspected something was not right when I started to oxydize the extraction: the color didn't change to dark blue but there was a brownish/purplish cast in it.
Well, then I thought the problem was the plants, they hadn't gotten enough sun beneath the grape wine. Next day I harvested some more plants from the same bed, but this time I got the usual blue, the two top colors in the picture. So it wasn't the plants but something in the extraction. I compared my notes and in the first extraction I had been hasty and strained the extraction on top of the washing soda when it's temperature was still 60°C while I usually wait until it has cooled down to 50°C or less. I can't think of any other reason for this. Usually the precursors from the leaves combine to indigotin when oxydizing, but now in higher temperature the precursors must have formed at least partly reddish/purplish indirubin or other "impurities" instead of blue indigotin.
There is always something new to learn about plants or dyeing:)

IN ENGLISH
One of the reasons I like japanese indigo is that it doesn't require hot water to extract the precursors of indigo from the leaves. In fact temperature higher than 70°C destroys the precursors.
Last summer I tried the extraction in room temperature and it seems to work as well, it only needs more time.
I stuffed the clean leaves in the glass jar, poured hot tap water ( 50°C) to fill the jar and closed the lid. I then kept it in room temperature, maybe 20°C. This first jar was left for 5 days, and as you can see the water in the jar has changed to typical translucent turqoise.
I strained the liquid and added washing soda and immediately there was little turqoise froth (above) and after oxydizing for only three minutes the froth had changed to blue and there was a lot of it (below). At this point I had heated the vat to about 45°C, and pH was during oxydizing about 9-10.
In the picture below I was trying to show the coppery sheen on top of the vat when it was ready for dyeing, but all you can see are reflections:)
IN ENGLISH
I was satisfied with the blues I had gotten from one week extractions in room temperature, and used this method many times last autumn. It was easy to leave the leaves in the jar and then dye with them when there was time. Also one benefit was that I could save electricity.
One of the jars was left for two weeks, and when I had time to dye with it, the leaves in the jar were looking very old, also the liquid was dark blueish green.
IN ENGLISH
However, I was happy to see that when I poured the liquid from the jar to the kettle, it looked ok, but while the leaves from a shorter extraction smelled actually quite nice, these leaves smelled awful, really rotten.
I started to oxydize the liquid which was quite yellow-green in the beginning, and there was not very much froth either.
But after oxydizing for 15 minutes the liquid was nice greenish blue:)
IN ENGLISH
Dyeing was done like I had described here.
The colors I got from this (too) long extraction were more greyish blue than what I got from 5-7 days extractions, so the rotting leaves may have not been good. A week is a better time and enough to extract the indigo precursors from the leaves in room temperature.

Spring Spirit Mittens Kevät-lapaset

Right now it is cold, -12°C, and a lot of snow. DH had taken these snow pictures night before last, when there was full moon. I am hoping for spring: browsing seed catalogues and sowing perennial seeds for cold stratification keeps my own thoughts occupied. Six more weeks before the snowdrops flower and after ten weeks the daffodils and wood anemones are flowering. These pictures are from last spring.

IN ENGLISH
My japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) grew well last summer, like always, in spite of a few cool nights in the beginning of June. I had sown the seeds in the beginning of April and planted the plants outside in the second week of June. The picture below is from June 20th. The plants always look small at first, and I could have left more space between the plants.
In the middle of August this bed looked like this, with no extra space between the plants.
IN ENGLISH
Last summer I had by chance two different types of japanese indigo, the other had pointed leaves and the other had round leaves. I didn't notice much difference in the flowers, both had pinkish flowers, although I had thought that the pointed leaf type would have had white flowers. The pointed leaf type started flowering much earlier than the round leaf type, and it's leaves were bigger, but then the round leaf type had more leaves, so I didn't see much difference in the amount of the harvest.
I heard from Rowland Ricketts, that in Japan at one point there were 20 different varieties of japanese indigo, bred to specific growing conditions. Now there are not so many varieties any more and he couldn't say what the ones that I grew were. The different varieties can also crossbreed. I have gotten seeds from both of these from the US.
IN ENGLISH
Most of my plants were round leaf variety and I dyed with them many times between August and October, and I still have some extraction solutions stored for spring, and some leaves dried if I ever try fermenting them for sukumo. In the summer I thought that I didn't get as dark color as I had previous years, and at the time I thought it was the weather in the summer, but later when I read my notes more carefully I found at least another reason for lighter shades: last summer I had put more yarn compared to the amount of leaves to the first bath (earlier 300g leaves to 100g of yarn, and now 200-250g of leaves to 100g of yarn)! I can then dye more yarn to lighter shades in the same bath. So if I had 1,8kg of fresh leaves in one extraction, I could dye first 600grams of darker blue (two 10-15min dips), and then another 600grams mid blue (two dips) and yet 300-500grams for very light blue. All together 1,5-1,7kg of yarn, but if I had put more yarn to the bath right in the beginning, the result would have been lighter.
IN ENGLISH
In the end of September I tried to compare the color from round leaf and pointed leaf varietys. Both plants had grown in the same bed side by side and I dyed with them one day apart. The extraction time was the same, 4 hours and I tried to keep the temperature the same (50-60C), but propably there were differences in the temperature. The extraction was like I had written here. The upper yarn was dyed with round leaf variety (210g leaves / 100g yarn) and the bottom yarn with pointed leaf variety (250g leaves / 100g yarn). The pointed leaf plants were the same as in the picture above, just cut in the bucket, and they were already flowering. Could that affect to the dye content in the leaves? Is there more precursors of indigotin in the leaves before the flowering? The flowers didn't go to waste, I cut them and took them inside in a vase to continue flowering and ripening their seeds:)
IN ENGLISH
Although the pointed leaf variety started flowering in the greenhouse in August, and also outside in the end of August, only the ones inside the greenhouse had enough time to ripen their seeds naturally. These plants were sown also a month earlier than the other ones outside. I cut flowering stems from the plants outside in the end of September, and took them inside the house and put in a vase, likewise I moved inside the big pot of flowering round leaf variety from the greenhouse. The seeds started to ripen late November, and I noticed that the plants which had started to flower properly before I took them inside, got now seeds. The ones only in bud when taken inside, didn't have any seeds at all. I'm so glad I got seeds now for this year, there is so much that I can put some seeds to the shop later next week. In this post last year I wrote where you can also purchase seeds of japanese indigo. I germinated some seeds already to see that they are viable, and they germinated well. The seeds of Japanese indigo stay viable for only a short time, if stored in refrigerator, for two years but if stored in room temperature, less than one year, so I have to hope that I succeed to get seeds from my own plants this year, too. It is no use saving the old seeds. I will sow earlier some seed for plants which are meant for producing seeds, in February, and the other ones later. This pointed leaf variety seems to start flowering a month earlier than the round leaf variety, at least here in Finland. The length of the day affects the flower formation, so in middle and southern Europe all varieties have enough time for flowering.

Color from parsley Värjäystä persiljalla

During the power cut (because of the storm) after Christmas, everything in our freezer melted. I had to throw most of the vegetables to the compost, but there was also quite a lot of parsley, and I had read that it contains flavones, apigenin and luteolin, which are good sources also for fast yellows, and so I decided to try to dye with the melted parsleys.
I had about 700grams of parsley, I simmered it for two hours (I had added a tablespoonful of washing soda to raise the pH to the bath) and the let cool overnight. The next day the pH was neutral, and I added 100grams of premordanted yarn and after dyeing for one hour the color was pale lemon yellow, reminding me of the color I get from yarrow. Because it was pretty pale, I left the yarn in the dyebath for several days. The pot was in our wood stove, and every day it got little heat (perhaps to 60°C), and I actually forgot it. After four days the color of the yarn had changed, it was a bit darker, but totally different shade, not lemon yellow but a warmer shade of yellow. Again one of the mysteries of natural dyes:)
Mascha's Star Gloves
Ravelryssa nimimerkki mascha2 on tehnyt Maahinen langastamme kauniit tähtikuviolliset kirjoneulesormikkaat, joihin löytyy maksullinen ohje Ravelrysta.

Mascha2 in Ravelry has knitted very beautiful gloves from our Maahinen yarn. She has also made a pattern for them, which you can purchase from Raverly. Very nice gloves, I like especially the cuff part, and the stranded knitting makes the gloves warm..

New prices Uusia hintoja

In December we came to the decision, that sadly we must raise our prices. The storm and it's consequenses delayed this, but now after January 10th the new prices for undyed natural yarns is going to be 10€/100g and for dyed yarns 17€/100g. The new price for the kits is going to be 27€ and for the kits where all or most of the yarn is dyed the new price will be 32€.
So now it is still possible to buy with old prices for one week. I will change the prices in the shop next Tuesday January 10th, all orders made and paid before that will be with the old prices.
There was also an update in the shop just before Christmas, and now all orders to outside EU are without VAT tax.

I'm back
Viikon takaisen myrskyn jäljiltä vihdoin internet yhteys alkoi toimia tänään, sähköt tulivat takaisin lauantaina viiden puolen vuorokauden katkon jälkeen. Eli nyt taas kaikki toimii kuten ennenkin, toivottavasti.
Hyvää vuoden alkua kaikille.

At last today we got internet connection back since the storm a week ago, and the electricity came back Saturday, after being out for five and half days, so now all orders and emails work like they should.
Happy New Year to everyone.

Puita on kaatunut kovasti linjoille.
Tästä syystä en pysty lähettämään tilauksia tai vastaamaan sähköposteihin ennenkuin sähköt palaavat, toivottavasti parin päivän sisään.
Pahoittelen viivästystä.

Last night and today there was a bad storm in Finland, lots of trees have fallen on the power lines and our electricity has been out since last night. In fact over 200 000 houses don't have electricity in south-west Finland!
Because of this I can't send orders or answer emails until the electricity is back, I hope tomorrow or day after tomorrow. We can heat the house with fire wood and cook on the stove, so we are ok, but there is no light (except candles) and naturally the computer doesn't work.
I'm sorry about this delay.
