What was last year like? The winter was very snowy, cold and long. Temperatures were all the time below freezing from the middle of December until the end of March.
Lopulta kevät kuitenkin tuli.
Finally the spring came.
The summer was hotter than ever. The perfect weather to experiment with solardyeing, dying with the heat from sun only. In July I dyed with many different dye combinations in glass jars in the greenhouse, this was something new to me and it worked, when the temperatures were high enough in the sun:)
Solardyeing is something I am going to do more next summer, if just the sun shines enough!
I also grew some dyeplants, like woad, and dyed with them.
And chinese woad, which didn't grow as well as the ordinary woad.
And of course my favourite, japanese indigo, which loved the hot and grew well like always.
Also my dalhias grew well. I could have used them for dyeing, but I never got aroung trying them, so I just enjoyed them in the garden.
One thing that I learned last summer was, that now I always put a glug of woodash lye (or any other alkaline) to the soaking/simmering bath when extracting color from yellow giving dyeplants, like weld, goldenrod or tansy. This way I got more and better color from them. The actual dyed bath was neutral pH.
Aina oppii uutta!
Last year I learned something new about mushroom dyeing, too.
Even though I had dyed with mushrooms since 1980s, only last summer (!!) I realized I could dye with them by just putting the mordanted yarns in the bath with the mushrooms, soak and simmer together. The colors I got this way were clearer and of course this method leaves one boiling out, and saves energy.
There are always new things to learn!
New winter came early, since the middle of November we have had freezing temperatures and snow, right now the snow is up to my knees in the garden. Spring seems to be far away, but inside it is warm to knit new mittens:)
It will be exciting to see what new things this year brings along? I have now been busy with lot of orders in my online shop, and soon it is time again to start thinking about spring sowing. I could also pick polypores from the old apple tree in the winter.
