Identifying alder buckthorn Korpipaatsaman tunnistaminen

Nyt on korpipaatsaman kukinta-aika, ainakin meidän lähimetsissämme. Minulla kesti pitkään oppia erottamaan paatsama nuoresta tuomesta, vaikka ne ovatkin ihan erilaisia. Tähän aikaan paatsamat löytää mielestäni helpoiten, tuomissa on jo marjojen raakileet, kun taas paatsamat kukkivat vasta nyt. Valoisalla paikalla mitättömän näköisissä kukissa käy kova pörriäisten surina.

IN ENGLISH
In Finland alder buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula) is flowering right now. It took me a long time to learn to identify it, it looks so similar with young bird cherries (Prunus padus) which is even more common here. Right now alder buckthorns are easy to find, because of the flowers, bird cherries had flowered already in May.

This is our small forest where alder buckthorns grow. They are small bushes or trees, these are about 4 meters high, but there are also smaller ones.
.

Lehtiä ja kukkia.

Leaves and flowers.

Tässä on vertailun vuoksi alempana  korpipaatsaman lehtiä, ylemmät ovat tuomen lehtiä, päällisin puolin hyvin saman oloisia.

Here the top two leaves are from bird cherry, and the two in the bottom are alder buckthorn leaves. They seem to look very similar.

But when you look closer, the bird cherry leaf on the right is saw-toothed around the margins, while the margins of alder buckthorn leaf on the left is smooth. There are other differences, too, but this is easy to see.

IN ENGLISH
The bark and leaves of alder buckthorn are very good for dyeing, bark gives brownish/reddish yellow (depending on the method) and leaves warm yellow.
In Finland you have to have landowners permission to gather leaves or bark from trees or bushes, but you can gather herbaceous plants by the road sides.
I'm lucky to have our own small forest where I get many tree leaves.

Tormentil Rätvänä

Sain viime viikolla purkillisen rätvänää, Potentilla erecta.

IN ENGLISH
Last week in a plant exchange I got a pot of common tormentil, Potentilla erecta. It is a common plant in Finland, but it doesn't grow naturally around our house, so I was very happy to get it to my dye plant collection. I am going to divide it and plant it in a bed, then if it grows well, in a year or two I can harvest the root and try dyeing with it. It is the root which has been used for dyeing, and Luontoportti says that the root can even grow as big as 500grams, so ti will give a lot of material to dye with:)
The root of tormentil contains lots of tannins and glycosid called tormentillin. I don't have any experience with dyeing with it, yet, but according to litterature it is possible to get greyish oranges, greyish browns, brownish reds and even red from it, and it has been used to tan and dye leather in Scotland and Finnish Lapland. Nowhere is exact recipe how to get the true reds from tormentil, I suspect this is as elusive as other tannin based dyes, but perhaps long soak/fermenting in lye would be a way to start. The usual boiling method yields likely the pale greyish brown colors.

My Genista in spring Pensasväriherneeni keväällä

IN ENGLISH
Someone (from Finland) asked me earlier this spring should she cut off the dry looking old stems from her Genista tinctoria bushes, and I answered that I would cut them off. My plants here in Finland have started their growth every spring almost from the ground, even though they have been covered with snow every winter. This is how they looked yesterday, the new growth was about 30cm high. These are three years old plants which I have grown from seed, so that is one reason why they are not bigger than this.. and perhaps they are planted too close to each other. I should do something about that. Maybe the stems also become more winter hardy when the plants mature more.
Last autumn in October I cut most of the stems for dyeing, but I left some stems longer, just to see if they would survive and the new growth would start higher, but the stems are dry now, so I could have used them for dyeing as well.
It doesn't matter that they start to grow from the ground, because they still flower in the beginning of August and I can harvest the leaves/stems all autumn. Here is how I dyed with these plants last autumn.

Väritattaren ja krapin taimia

Ylihuomenna eli torstaina 24.5 on Helsingissä Hyötykasviyhdistyksen järjestämä keväinen taimitori Annalassa.

Next Thursday I'm in Helsinki in a spring plant happening organized by Hyötykasviyhdistys (Association of useful plants, I don't quite know how to translate this). I have some extra plants of japanese indigo and madder and if anyone is interested, I will take them with me and sell them. If you want to buy them there, please email me or leave a comment, if no-one is interested, I'll leave them home (there is not much room in the car).

Dyeing with Coreopsis shoots Värjäystä syyskaunosilmän versoilla

IN ENGLISH
Annual Dyer's Coreopsis, Coreopsis tinctoria, is a good dyeplant, and its perennial relative, Coreopsis verticillata, has the same kind of dyestuffs in it. I had bought a plant of Coreopsis verticillata several years ago, but I had planted it in a heavy loam bed, where it barely survived. Then couple of years ago I moved it to a new bed in a slope where the soil was more sandy, and it has thrived there. In fact so much that it was going to override a peony, so I had to do something. Last week I dug half of the Coreopis up. It was just coming up, and I noticed that the new shoots underground were bright yellow. As I didn't have a place where to replant it, I decided to try to dye with it.

IN ENGLISH
I washed the roots and shoots, picture above. I separated the yellow shoots from hard roots, and used only the shoots, I had 400grams of them. I soaked them overnight, then simmered for an hour and let cool overnight.
I strained the bath, and dyed 100grams of alum-cream of tartar mordanted yarn in the bath, and got pale yellow. Picture below. I usually get this color from an after bath of Coreopsis tinctoria flowers, so it's obvious that I had put too much yarn to the bath, compared to the weight of the shoots. Perhaps 50grams would have been ok.
I know that I can use the flowers of this plant, but it's good to know that also the other parts of the plant are useful. And it's always better to dye with them than to throw to compost:)

Follow-up to Sarcodon squamosus Jatkoa suomuorakasvärjäyksiin

Tästä sienten vanhettamisesta puhutaan myös jo Miriam Ricen kirjassa Mushrooms for Color, 1980. Liian nuorina kerätyille ei auta ämpärivanhettaminenkaan, vaan sienten pitää saada vanhettua ensiksi maassa.

IN ENGLISH
Posts about dyeing with Sarcodon squamosus are the most popular in my blog, so it clearly interests many, especially Finns, even though you need really a lot of mushrooms and it is not easy to get the blue from them. So here is more about dyeing with them. Last November I got quite a lot of old Sarcodon squamosus mushrooms, and I did experiments with them then, about it here. I had one bucketful of mushrooms left, and I kept it covered outside over the winter. It froze and now in the spring when it melted, the content was smelly brown mush. You couldn't tell what mushrooms they had been or even if it was mushrooms in the first place. In the autumn there had been about 5 kilos of mushrooms, I don't know the weight now.
I poured the contents of the bucket to kettle and boiled for two hours. I didn't add anything to them, and pH was 6. There was a lot of froth, first it was reddish brown and then it started to change to brownish blue. After boiling I strained the bath, let it cool down a little and then added 50grams of white alum-cream of tartar- mordanted yarn to it. I didn't add more water to the bath. The yarn changed to brown first and then slowly to greyish blue. I dyed it in 80°C (simmer) for one hour and then let it cool down in the bath for another hour. The result is the slightly uneven greenish blue, the upper yarn in the picture. I think it is quite good for a mushroom color.
The next day I dyed another 50grams in the afterbath, and got light blueish green, the bottom yarn in the picture.

If I had had more mushrooms, I would have also made a bath with added ammonia when boiling the mushrooms, and that would possibly have given even more blue color, but I'm happy for this, and that leaves more experiments for next year, that is if we get a good autumn for mushrooms this year:)
So my own opinion is that you need to have a lot of Sarcodon squamosus, and you need to pick them when they are old enough, and even then, with ageing, you can have blue without ammonia. Miriam Rice's older book Mushrooms for Color (1980) talks also to age these mushrooms for blues.

Seedlings and other plants Taimia ja muita kasveja

IN ENGLISH
I have been having a gardening holiday. Summers are always so busy with all the dyeing and the market, so now it is a perfect time to enjoy and work the garden.
First some photos of dyeplants: above are the japanese indigo plants which I sowed early in the end of January, photos of the same plants in March here.

Nämä väritattaret on kylvetty 28.3, kuva otettu viime viikolla, kuukausi kylvämisestä.

IN ENGLISH
The japanese indigo in the photo above were sown March 28th, photo from last week, a month from sowing. 'Senbon' variety on the right and plants from my own seeds on the left. The photo below is from the same plants, I had put to individual pots last week-end.

Krappi on itänyt hyvin, purkki vasemmalla. Nämä on kylvetty 2.4 ja ne itivät 13.4. Kuva 27.4.
Oikeanpuoleisessa purkissa on Ruissalon kasvitieteellisestä ostettua vahamataraa, Galium glaucum.

IN ENGLISH
Madder has germinated well, the one in the left. These both were sown April 2nd, and they germinated April 13th. The photo was taken April 27th.
On the right there are seedlings of Galium glaucum, an American bedstraw species, I bought the seeds from Turku Universitys Botanical garden. Does anyone know, if roots of this bedstraw species are good for dyeing red?

IN ENGLISH
I'm really happy about these seedlings. They are Asperula tinctoria, which is relative to bedstraws and also has the same red in it's roots. I had also sown Galium verum and Galium boreale outside in the autumn, but they have not yet germinated. They will soon, I'm sure. So the red dyegarden is getting  bigger, as does the blue one, too:)

Some photos from my  garden now, these are not for dyeing, only for my pleasure:)
Still some snowdrops, peonies are coming up and hellebores and corydalis are flowering just now.

Notes on dyeing with birch leaves Havaintoja koivunlehdillä värjäämisestä

IN ENGLISH
Still more yellows:) Recently I have dyed with dried plants from last summer, so that I will have more room in my storage before the new growing season starts. Here are some new observations I have made while dyeing.
The picture above is of birch leaves in late May last summer, but now I dyed with dried leaves. I have written about dyeing with birch leaves here, and then, as I usually do, I had only simmered the leaves, not with rolling  boil, but now the leaves accidentally boiled really hard, and it seems that with birch leaves it gives better results (or at least different ones).
I had soaked the dried leaves overnight (100g dried leaves to 100g yarn), and added some washing soda to the soak water to raise the pH to 9. Next day I boiled the leaves with rolling boil for one hour, let it cool down and then strained off the bath. Before I put the mordanted yarns to the bath I checked the pH and if it was still high after I had added more water, I lowered it with a small glug of vinegar to neutral, pH 7. The yarns were mordanted with alum and cream of tartar, and for once I remembered to add also a piece of unmordanted yarn and another of alder bark mordanted yarn to the same bath.
The thing that made me wonder now was that the bath was dark red, and the yarn in the bath looked reddish (picture below), but when I took the yarn out from the bath, all the red came off, and only golden yellow was left in the yarn. This looked just like what happens with red bark baths, the red is only in the bath but can't attach to the yarn. It seems to me that birch leaves contain the same kind of red tannins (or other red dyestuffs) than some barks, and now that the leaves were boiled vigorously in high pH, the reds came out. I repeated this dyeing with another batch of dried leaves with the same results.

Here the brighter yellow in the left is from the bath above, and the color in the right is from the first after bath.

Alla olevassa kartassa näytteet ovat seuraavasti:
1. aluna-viinikivipuretus
2. ei mitään puretusta, samassa liemessä edellisen kanssa
3. lepänkuoripuretus, edelleen ollut samassa edellisten kanssa.
4. aluna-viinikivipuretus, toinen jälkiväri samasta liemestä (ensimmäinen jälkiväri on yllä oikeanpuolimmainen)

IN ENGLISH
The samples below are as follows:
1. alum + CoT mordant
2. no mordant, the yarn was in the same bath as no 1
3. alder bark mordanted yarn, dyed in the same bath as no 1 and 2.
4. alum + CoT mordant, second after bath (the color from the first after bath is the one in the right in the picture above)
5. no mordant, the yarn was in the same bath as no 4. The peculiar thing about this is that the color was now darker and different shade than no 2 which was also with no mordant. This is interesting color, if only there was a way to make it stonger.
6. alum + CoT mordant, this yarn was dyed with fresh leaves last May (500g of fresh leaves to 100g of yarn). The leaves were NOT boiled, only simmered, the simmering bath was pH9, the dyeing bath was neutral. I have to try next May with fresh leaves if hard boiling gives golden yellow from them, too. I should also test if there are differences in the lightfastness of the golden yellows and lemon yellows.

Dyeing with yarrow and it's lightfastness Värjäys siankärsämöillä ja valonkesto

Allaolevassa lankakuvassa no 1. Ehkä kasvit olisi pitänyt kerätä kukinnan alussa tai ennen?? Tai värjätä langat uudelleen samassa liemessä seuraavana päivänä, jospa väri olisi tummentunut?

IN ENGLISH
Last summer I dyed with yarrow, Achillea millefolium. Yarrow is mentioned in Jenny Dean's book Wild Colour, and also Cardon's book says it contains flavones, at least apigenin and luteolin, which should be fast. Yarrow grows wild in our yard (and also some in the flowerbed), and by our dirt road, where it is easily available.

In the end of July I harvested flowering yarrows, the whole plants. I cut them to pieces, poured hot water over them and added a glug of wood ash lye to help release the dyestuffs. Next morning I simmered them for two hours, and at this point the bath was dark brown. I strained off the bath and dyed alum/cream of tartar mordanted wool in the bath. The pH of the dyebath was neutral. Even though the bath looked dark, the yarn turned out quite pale color, no 1 in the picture. I used 1,5kg of fresh yarrow/100g of yarn. Perhaps I should have used them earlier, before they were in full bloom??
Or simmer them another time the next day, to see if the yarn would have become darker?

IN ENGLISH
I tested these yarns for lightfastness now in March, two weeks in full sunlight in our porch. The half of the yarn which is closer to the knot was covered, and the other half from where the yarn folds in the picture was in the sunlight.
The top sample, no 1, was dyed with yarrow, and it kept the color pretty well, only a very slight change in the color. The sample no 2 was dyed with red clover (Trifolium pratense), I used the whole plant when it was in full  bloom in August, 600g of plant/100g of wool. This sample faded considerably, as you can see. So now I know that it is not a good dyeplant for me.
The third sample was from the yarn I dyed with frozen parsley in January, and it kept it's color very well, hardly any change.

Finally Viimeinkin

Viimeinkin on taas kevät, maanantain pienestä lumisateesta ja kylmistä öistä huolimatta.

Finally the spring is here, in spite of the new snow and cold nights.

Buckthorn bark experiment and lightfastness Paatsamankuorikokeilu ja valonkesto

Last summer I experimented again with fermeting buckthorn bark. Here and here are my previous experiments with it in high pH. Now I tried a method an archaeologist Krista Vajanto has used. She told about her experiments in Finnish Dyer's Guild summer meeting in 2010, and also wrote about it in the Guild's paper next autumn. There is a summary of her lecture online in Finnish here, but not the exact method, and she has also written about dyeing with barks in TetriDesigns pages in Finnish.

I soaked 200g of buckthorn bark pieces  in wood ash lye, and let the jar ferment in my greenhouse in the summer. The fermenting lowered the pH and every few days I added more wood ash lye to the jar to raise the pH, and finally the jar was almost full. When the pH dropped next time to 6 (about three weeks from the start), I let it stay low and added 100g of alum/CoT mordanted yarn to the jar. I kept the jar in the greenhouse and the temperature varied between 20 and 35°C, it was higher in the the daytime in sunshine and lower during the night.

IN ENGLISH
The pictures above were taken after about two weeks dyeing, nice orange. I let the yarn oxidize in the line for one hour, and when the color didn't deepen or change, I put it back to the jar.

Kuivatusta kotimaisesta  korpipaatsaman kuoresta tulee todennäköisesti samantapaisia tuloksia.

IN ENGLISH
I was so busy in the late summer (with the market, japanese indigo, mushrooms and everything) that I forgot the yarn, and looked it next time six weeks later in September. At first it looked the same orange like in the summer (pictures above), but soon the color started to darken, and after two days in the line outside it was yellowish brown, picture below. The color became now more brownish  when compared to the redder color dyed in alkaline fermenting bath. I got the same kind of results back in 2008, only now the color was darker, which was probably due to the longer time in the bath. Anyway buckthorn bark dyes well also in lower temperatures, it only takes more time. This buckthorn bark was from Frangus catharctica, but our native Rhamnus frangula bark  probably gives similar colors.

Tavallisesti käytän 30-40g kuoria/100g lankaa, liotan yön yli, haudutan tunnin, siivilöin ja värjään tunnin, värjäyslämpötila on hyvä pitää enintään 80C, liian korkeassa väri samenee)
5. 2012 värjäys no4, mutta lanka laitettu kylmään tuhkalipeään, pH9, värjäyksen jälkeen yön yli, jolloin väri muuttui keltaisesta ruusunpunaiseksi
6. 2012 purettamaton vertailulanka, ollut myös tuhkalipeässä

IN ENGLISH
I had washed the yarn in the autumn and put to storage. In February the sun came out and I took samples from different buckthorn bark dyeings and put them outside in the porch, half covered for two weeks. Sun was bright and the snow intensified the sunlight.
1. 2008 dyed in fermenting basic bath, 200g of bark to 100g of yarn
2. 2008 dyed in fermenting basic bath, 100g of bark to 100g of yarn
3. 2011 the above dyed in the summer in neutral to acidic bath, 200g bark to 100g of yarn
4. 2012 the normal hot neutral bath, 200g of bark to 100g of yarn ( I used the same relation even though that amount would have dyed more. Usually I use 30-40grams of bark to 100g of wool for golden yellow colors, soak, simmer and then dye in the bath.)
5. 2012 the dyeing no 4, but the yellow yarn was soaked after dyeing in cold wood ash lye (pH 9) overnight, and the color changed from gold to red.
6. 2012 unmordanted control yarn from the bath 4 but also soaked in wood ash lye overnight.

No 3 haalistui ihan hitusen. No 4 väri ei haalistunut vaan muuttui hiukan tummemmaksi, eron huomaa tarkkaan katsoen.
Krista Vajanto kehoitti käyttämään nimenomaan purettamatonta lankaa.

IN ENGLISH
The samples took the test quite well, in the picture the change of color doesn't show very well, the right hand half of the yarns was in the sun. No 1 and 2 didn't change at all, but their color was saturated and strong to begin with. No 3 faded just a little. No 4 didn't fade but it did change to a little darker and not so bright color. The rose colored no 5 and 6 faded somewhat, more than samples 1-3, and the unmordated more than alum mordanted sample.

EDIT: Last summer I forgot (once again) to have unmordanted control yarn in the dyebath, it could have become different color. Krista Vajanto advises to use unmordanted yarn for this type of dyeing.

Plans for the dye garden Värikasvisuunnitelmia

IN ENGLISH
While there is still too much snow outside, it is again time for planning and sowing dye plants for the coming season. Or actually I have had to do the planning already so that I could order new seeds in time. I am also a little ahead in sowing, because in the end of January I sowed some of my own japanese indigo seeds to see if they were viable, and they were and germinated in one week, so then I couldn't throw the seedlings away and they have now been growing under the lamp near the window. I hope I get new seeds from these also next autumn. They are in the front in the picture, in the back there are my tomatoes, and also some other seeds have germinated too early and I have had to keep them inside under the lamp: some hellebores, white meconopsis and some primulas, which are not dyeplants, I grow them to plant in my woodland bed. I guess I am a plant and seed addict:).

The most of my japanese indigo I sow near the end of the month, about 8-10 weeks before I can plant them outside when the frosts are over. These first ones are just for the seeds in the autumn so that they will have long enough growing time.
I have also ordered some new japanese indigo seeds from the USA, from IndiGrowing Blue -project. These seeds are a japanese variety called 'Senbon', which has reddish thicker stems and pink flowers. It will be interesting to see if these differ from the varieties I already have. The shipping from the US was not cheap, 16,95$, but the seeds arrived really fast, in four days. It seems Finland is not the only country with high shipping prices. Anyway, I am really happy about these seeds, and I have already sowed a couple, although I sow most of them by the end of the month. I'm already excited about these plants:)

I need plants for blue the most, and I'm also going to sow woad later in the spring. Then the reds: I'm going to divide some of my madder plants and make a new bed for them. I have also already last autumn sowed Galium verum and Galium boreale seeds in pots which have been in our root cellar in cold all winter. I am not sure if they needed the cold stratification, but it can't hurt them, because in the wild they get cold during winter, too. I'm going to plant also more Galium mollugo in a bed, but as it grows wild near my garden, so it will be easy just to transplant in the spring.
I have also ordered some dye plant seeds from Turku University's Botanical Garden: Asperula tinctoria and Serratula tinctoria. These seeds have not yet arrived, but I hope I get them even though I was a little late ordering them (together with some peony seeds which I couldn't resist:))

I'm not going to sow many plant for yellows, because I already get yellow from my favourite perennial dye plants; tansy, goldenrod and knapweed. Only some weld and then I couldn't resist some  annual Coreopsis cultivars, 'Amulet' and 'Picta Be Bop'. They are so pretty, that I want them anyway, even if I don't harvest them much. I have the same mental problem with all beautiful flowers, even with knapweed and goldenrod, but I just have to harden myself and cut them when they are at their best.
