My walnuts and dyeing with walnut husks Jalopähkinöitäni ja pähkinänkuorivärjäystä

IN ENGLISH
Husks of common walnut (Juglans regia) are one of the rare natural dyestuffs that are fast without a mordant. Different species of walnuts (Juglans) have been used for dyeing around the world and besides tannins, they contain many derivatives of Juglone, according to Cardon mostly in the fruits (6-8% of the dry weight), but also in the roots, young shoots and catkins.

Common walnut grows in most of the Europe, but also in Finland you can grow some Juglans species. My own trees are still very small, I got Juglans mandshurica a year ago and it survived last winter without any damage. Of course the mother tree of my little one grows in Hämeenlinna, about 100 kilometres north form us, so it should grow also here. Picture of my plant below.

IN ENGLISH
Last autumn I sowed also some other walnuts, although it is doubtful if I am dyeing anything any more when these trees are mature and produce walnuts, but then they are for someone else:) It is always good to plant a tree.
I got couple of walnuts from a friend who picked them from a park in Budabest while in holiday there  last year. I got them as Black walnut, Juglans nigra, but I have been thinking that maybe they are Common walnut after all, I'm not sure. Anyway, I am pleased that they germinated well this May. Picture below.
Sain myös viime syksynä toiselta kasviystävältä pähkinöitä Tammelassa kasvavasta amerikanjalopähkinästä, Juglans cinerea, ja nekin itivät jokainen. Ne pitäisi kiireesti koulia omiin purkkeihinsa. Ehkä minulla on täällä joskus oikea jalopähkinämetsikkö:)

IN ENGLISH
I also got from another friend  Butternut (Juglans cinerea) walnuts from a tree that grows here in Finland, in Tammela, also north from us, and they all germinated well. I'm already late in giving them each an own pot. It seems I will have a whole forest of walnut trees here some day:)

No voi.

IN ENGLISH
I have previously dyed with walnuts with long soak, then boiling them and also dyeing in hot bath and gotten nice light to medium brown (a brown not biege), but nothing like what Ladka had gotten from walnuts. Look at that dark chocholate color!

This time I put the walnuts (200grams) to soak in April and after two months in May added two skeins of yarn to the bath, one unmordanted and one mordanted with alum and cream of tartar. I kept the bucket in the greenhouse and after two weeks I took the yarns from the bath. I though that walnuts would dye well also without heating ,but the color was quite pale (much lighter than if heated), so I put the yarns to fresh water and heated it to simmer, and added 4grams of iron to the bath for 15 minutes. I still didn't get dark brown but insted the yarns had changed to muddy olive greenish brown. Sigh. In the picture below the alum mordanted lighter yarn is on the right and unmordanted little darker on the left, and both had been in iron afterbath.

Now the used walnut husks are soaking again, and I am sure there will be more color in them after some months, I will just have to wait. It is good to know that walnut dye works in cold bath also (even if it gives lighter color), but I think next time I will do like I have done before: simmer after a long soak, and then dye in hot bath, and cool the yarns in the bath. Long soak means really a long soak, months, the longer the better. Some books even say a year, so I can keep the soaking husks and dye when I don't have anything else, even if it is next year.
Even though I have never gotten that dark chocholate brown, the lighter brown is also nice, and I can imagine it would be a good base to madder or cochineal, especially if there isn't natural sheep brown in hand, only white wool or silk.

Summer dyeings and butterflies Kesävärjäyksiä ja perhosia

IN ENGLISH
Again this summer I have dyepots in the greenhouse, madder, fermenting buckthorn bark, oak bark and walnuts. I have solar dye jars, and again this summer I try to get indigo fermentation vat to succeed, which I haven't managed last summer or summer before that. The temperature had varied too much, or it had been too low, or pH had dropped too low, or all those reasons, anyway, it has never worked. Now DH dug the big vat in the ground so that the temperature would be more even. During the night I cover it with a piece polystyrene, and it does keep the temperature higher than without it.

IN ENGLISH
Smelly old madder baths or mushrooms seem to be good for other things besides dyeing: first time ever we have seen both Purple Emperor (Apatura iris) and Lesser Purple Emperor (Apatura ilia) butterflies. They have been very rare in Finland, occuring only occasionally in the south coast,  but last summer there were more of them and it seems they are here this summer, too. They don't feed on flowers but prefer rotting things, and clearly they consider my madder pot delicious:) One even walked on it when it was hot! The pictures don't show how big and beautiful butterflies they really are, but we are excited about them.

Some flowers in my garden (not for dyeing), white Lychnis chalcedonica and Delphiniums.

Old woad Vanhaa morsinkoa

IN ENGLISH
Usually woad flowers in the second year, but in my garden most of my woad plants die in the first winter. I think the soil is too heavy (loamy) and waterlogged for them, even though I have made raised beds for them. Some singular plants have survived and come up very late in spring.

Last year three woad plants came up when I had already planted japanese indigo in the same bed where I had woad the previous year, and because they were smothered by the japanese indgo they didn't flower last year at all even thought they were small second year plants. Below there is a picture of two of them from Oct. 22nd 2010, last autumn, surrounded by the frosty japanese indigo plants.
Many times biennal plants don't flower in their second year, if they are too small. At least Digitalis behaves like this in my garden, they flower when they are big enough (in their third year), and I presume this is what happened to my woad plants, too. A further explanation about these plants: I am sure they are now three years old, because I had planted them in that bed 2009 from plants I had first grown in pots, so I didn't sow them directly to the bed and thus there can't be old seeds in the ground which had germinated last year.  I have had woad flower in my garden only once (ever) and that was in the other part of the garden (with more sandy soil) 100meters away from this bed with  trees and bushes between them.
Anyway, in the picture above there are some small newly planted woad plants and two big old plants.

Yksi kolmannen vuoden morsigoista teki kunnon kukkavarret (jotka kylläkin juhannuksen rankkasade kaatoi ja kukkavarret katkesivat tyvestä), mutta muut alkoivat tehdä lehtiä. Kuva otettu 28.5.2011.

One of the plants grew good flowerstalks  (which hard rain knocked over in Midsummer), but other plants started to grow only lots of leaves. The picture below was taken May 28th 2011.

In the bed where I grew woad last year (2010) also only some plants overwintered and came up this spring and from these plants only one grew a flowerstalk. Besides the flowerstalk, that plant also started to grow new leaf rosette, picture below.

IN ENGLISH
Last week I harvested bucketful of leaves (850grams) from these second and third year woads, and extracted and dyed like earlier.  The bath looked good and it contained lots of indigotin: I dyed first 200grams of quite dark blue with two dips, then another 200grams and yet 100grams more, so totally 500grams of almost the same shade of blue, and then the bath seemed to be exhausted, the fourth batch of yarns came out really light turqoise blue, and they are going to overdyed later again.
I would never have thought to get so much color, but then these leaves were not from the flowerstalks or plants that flowered, but from the leaves that grew as rosettes in second or third year plants.
I watered the plants well after harvesting, and though we have now had really hot weather with no rain,  the new leaves are already growing in the rosettes.

My japanese indigo Väritatarkuvia

Tässä vähän tämän vuotisia väritattariani (Persicaria tinctoria, vanha nimi Polygonum tinctorum, japanese indigo). Nämä yläkuvassa olevat on kylvetty maalikuun alussa, vaikka suurimman osan kyllä kylvin vasta huhtikuun alussa.

IN ENGLISH
Here are some photos of my japanese indigoes this year. The ones in the photos above were sown in the beginning of March, but most of the seeds I had sown in the beginning of April, because I couldn't plant them outside until June.  I had earlier only the sharp leaved variety, but now most of my plants seem to be the round leaved variety, which I haven't dyed with before.  I haven't really found out any research about the difference in the indigotin content of each variety (or even what they are called, do they have a name?), but I have read somewhere that the sharp leaved would have higher indigotin content. How much higer, I don't know.. The round leaved variety should have pink flowers while the other one has white flowers.

IN ENGLISH
I planted some of them in the greenhouse in the beginning of June, and also in big pots, and the rest of the plants got planted outside only last week. They would have been ready earlier, but I didn't have the time to plant them. Now I have also covered the beds with straw, to keep moisture in and weeds out, and am hoping for warm weather:)

Jo aiemmin 2008 Anne Vuoreman julkaisu Reduction and analysis methods of indigo käsitteli indigon pelkistystä glukoosin avulla ja julkaisun lähdeluettelossa mainitaan Ushida, S.; Matsuo, M. Reduction of indigo by glucose.

IN ENGLISH
Next some indigo reduction experiments.
In April there was ISEND symposium in France, and among other things a demonstration by Michel Garcia about reducing indigo with fructose. I could not attend the symposium, but I am so glad many people have written about it in their blogs and so shared the knowledge about this demonstration. I had read earlier about it from Anne Vuorema's Reduction and analysis methods of indigo by University of Turku, Finland, and in the references there is mentioned  Ushida, S.; Matsuo, M. Reduction of indigo by glucose. Nippon Kasei Gakkaishi 1991, 42, 61-65, which would also be very intersting to read.

Indigo is different from most other natural dyes in that it needs to be reduced to so-called indigowhite before it can penetrate to the fibers. This reduction can be done with bacteria by fermenting or most of the time with modern chemicals. New environmentally friendly and easy reduction methods are being searched, and reduction with glucose/fructose could be the one.

I am not completely happy with the results of my first experiments, but this is something to go on with. I based these experiments to Anne Vuorema's publication and to experiences Helen ja Jane shared so generously in their blogs about Michel Garcia's method. Thank You, and also thanks to Michel Garcia for the demostration!

1. KOKEILU
10g indigojauhetta

EXPERIMENT 1.
10 grams of natural indigo powder
10 grams of madder soaked overnight
20 grams of lye (NaOH)
100g fructose
2dl vettä

I mixed indigo to the madderwater and added lye. pH was 11 or over(the strips don't show more). I then heated the jar, until it was 65-70°C (15min) and added the fructose. The vat changed immediately to yellow, like you can in the spoon with which I was stirring the fructose to the vat. This seemed promising, becase my hydrosulfite vat looks the same when reduced.

IN ENGLISH
After 30 minutes in 65-70°C there was purple shinyt bubbles in the surface (picture above) and underneath the vat was dark brownish green, not yellow any more. The pH had dropped to 7!!
I added more 5g more lye to raise the pH again to 10, and eaited again 30 minutes for reduction, but nothing happened so I added 20grams fructose to the vat.

After another 15 minutes the vat was brownish yellow and there was blue in the surface, the smell of the vat was like burned sugar. i waited something else to happen but nothing did, and after one hour I poured the little vat carefully to bigger pan to 5 litres of clean 60°C water.

Yläkuvassa tämä on lanka no 1.

IN ENGLISH
At this point I didn't have great hopes, because to me the vat looked too dark and too green, obviously there was a lot of unreduced indigo in it.
I added 100grams of white wool in the vat and dyed twice about 10 minutes oxydizing the same time in between. i got the light blueish turqoise, in the picture below still wet after dyeing. I washed the yarn and in the first rinse a lot of dark green rinsed off, but already in the second rinse the water was pretty clear.
In the first picture this is yarn no 1.
The next day I dyed another 100grams in the same vat and got light beige, no picture of that.
So I had 10grams of indigo and the result was 100grams of light blue wool, a lot of indigo went to waste.

2.KOKEILU
10g indigoa

IN ENGLISH
EXPERIMENT 2.

10g natural indigo
20grams lye (NaOH)
30g fructose
2dl water

I mixed indigo powder to 70°C hot water, and added lye to it. I added fructose and after 5 minutes the temp was 75°C, so I turned it off and waited another 5 minutes. The vat was yellow in the spoon, but you can see there are tiny blue particles in the yellow (unlike in the first experiment). It looked ok otherwise, so I poured it gently to the bigger pan. pH had dropped to 9, so I added 5grams of lye, pH 10.
After 40 minutes, the pH was 9 again, the vat blue and not sheen or bubbles.
Anyway, I dipped 100grams of wool twice for ten minutes, and the result was really uneven greenish beige, total failure.
I think one reason was the too low pH, and I used also less fructose, and of course I didn't follow the recipe exactly, for one I didn't use calcium hydroxide like the original recipe said! And I'm not sure what the temp was in the end, I didn't put it down, and I can't remember it anymore. Always write everything down!
The four pictures below are from this experiment, the vat looks ok, but the result was not.

IN ENGLISH
I was going to give up, but in the night of the second day I tried yet another way. I couln't believe why lye wouldn't work, because the important thing was to get the pH up, which lye does. Also the ratio between lye and liquid is important to pH.
I don't have pictures of these last two experiments unfortunately, only the yarns.

EXPERIMENT 3.

10g natural indigo
20g lye
30g fructose
1,75l water in a big 2 litre glass jar, which I filled almost full, and put in a double boiler like the smaller jar.

I mixed indigo with hot water, and then added lye like before. When the temp was 75-80°C I added fructose. pH was 11 or more. The spoon became yellow. After 10 minutes the temp was 80°C, and I turned it off. the vat looked brownish yellow, and on the surface there were a little bubbles and purple sheen.
After 45 minutes the bubbles had disappeared and the vat didn't look good to me.
I added 70grams of fructose (total now 100g), pH was 9, temp 70°C. I don't know why I didn't add more lye, but I didn't.
Another 45 minutes, and it looked like nothing had happened.
I was sure that the vat wouldn't work, but added 20grams of wool straight to the jar anyway, for ten minutes, and when I pulled it out it was dark green which turned to very dark blue in about one minute! Dark blue No 3 in the top picture. When I washed the little skein a lot of blue/dark green rinsed off in the first rinse, but not after that, and when I reskeined it, the blue didn't rub off to my hands.
Because I couldn't fit a big skein in the jar, I poured gently the vat to a bigger pan (with more water), and dyed 100grams of wool with two dips the light blueish turqoise no3 in the picture.

KOKEILU 4
10g indigoa

IN ENGLISH
EXPERIMENT 4.

10g natural indigo
10grams madder soaked overnigh
20grams lye
100grams fructose
7l water in big pan (not glassjar this time)

I mixed indigo with soaking madder and added lye to it and after it had dissolved, poured all to the big pan, the temp was 70-75°C, pH 11. I added the fructose, and the vat didn't change immediately to yellow like before, but insted slower, and after 10 minutes the color of the vat was reddish brown (but the madder gives it's color, so that confuses a little). Finally in this vat the same thing happened as in Helen's vat: there was kind of "gas" floating in the surface, and under the surface it seemed to bubble slowly. The fructose did something there, and coppery sheen appeared in the surface, like it supposed to, but no blue "flower".
This time I didn't wait any longer, but after the ten minutes added 100g of wool to the vat, dyed for one minute, oxydized for two minutes and then dyed again for one minute. These short times, because I was afraid of the high pH (still 11) and high temp (65°) damaging the wool. I washed the wool immediately after the second oxydizing and soaked in vinegar to remove the alkalinity.
The color is very nice light blue with no turqoise in it.. but not dark blue.

AJATUKSIA

THOUGHTS

On the other hand I did get blue, but only a very small amount considering the amount of indigo used. With the same amount of indigo, if reduced with sodium hydrosulfite, I get about 1,5kg of blue yarns, so a lot of indigo is left unreduced in the fructose vat, or at leat in mine now.
How can I get all the indigotin to reduce with fructose?

It seems important that the vat is alkaline enough (11? 10?), at least when the indigotin is reducing, but can the pH get lower later and the indigotin still stays in reduced form? Somehow it seems that it needs to be high, but I'm not sure??
Why did the pH drop by itself in my first experiment?

High temperature seems to be important, but on the other hand I did get blue from the vats with madder, when the temp was lower. The pH was high, though. Hmm?
Protein fibers and high pH is not a good combination, but with sellulose fiber this could be ok.

Did I wait too long for the reduction, would ten minutes have been enough?

Why did the small skein in the glass jar dye dark blue when in the bigger pan it became only light blue? Higher pH? Or some other factor which becomes diluted in larger amount of water? This leads to not being able to dye bigger skeins or many skeins at the time, which I want to do. 100grams of wool need at least 5 litres of water ot float freely, and 500grams 25 litres!
This is one thing which bothers me most right now, besides the low yield of blue from indigo, compared to chemical reduction.

Which are the essential points in succeeding with the fructose vat? I'm not sure.
So many questions.
This is not at all as simple as it seemed.
I think I am going to let this vat steep in my mind for a while, and I'll concentrate to other dyeings right now.

Galium mollugo - Galium album

IN ENGLISH
A short addition to my previous posting about bedstraws. Terttu commented that Galium album is a different species than Galium mollugo, which is more southern species, bigger and more upright. It's Finnish name is etelänpaimenmatara (Southern hedge bedstraw), and it has been found only in couple of locations in Finland, while Galium album is very common.
Galium album is the bedstraw which is growing near our house, and with which I have dyed with last spring and gotten coral red. In Cardon's book there is a comparaison of the dyestuffs in different bedstraws and there is mentioned Galium mollugo, does this refer to the southern species or to the one growing also here. When I googled, all sources in English say G.mollugo is a synonym to G.album. So this is confusing. In Finnish websited I found this with a picture and more about this southern species, but only in Finnish.
On the other hand the name doesn't matter, if you get the right color, but the names are important. When someone else tries to follow my instructions, if they have the different species, then it might matter. You have to know what species you are using.

Bedstraws in my garden Puutarhani mataroita

Olen kerännyt penkkiin kasvamaan krapin eli värimataran lisäksi myös luonnonvaraisia mataroita. Viime viikolla sain pienen alun ahomatarasta (Galium boreale) ystävieni pihalta.

IN ENGLISH
Besides madder I am growing native bedstraws in a bed in my garden. Last week I got a small plant of  Northern Bedstraw (Galium boreale) from my friend's garden. I haven't found it growing wild in my own garden or near our house. Many times Northern Bedstraw is referred as the bedstraw used for dyeing earlier, and  it would be interesting to compare colours from all our native bedstraws. To get comparable results the growing conditions should be the same, and that is why I have them growing in the same bed.
Below there is the picture of my new small Northern bedstraw, just planted.
Identifying different perennial bedstraws is not easy, but luckily only a few  species of them are common in Finland. If you find a perennial bedstraw here in Finland growing in a dry place, and it has only four leaves growing in whorls around the stem, it most likely is Northern Bedstraw.
There is a good Finnish website NatureGate which has descriptions for native plants, also bedstraws. The pages are also in other languages.

IN ENGLISH
A year ago I planted Hedge Bedstraw (Galium album) next to my madder, and they are already this big, picture below. Last spring I also dyed with them, posting about that here.
Hedge Bedstraw (or Upright Bedstraw or White Bedstraw, I don't know which name is more common for the same plant) is usually taller than Northern Bedstraw, and it has 6-8 leaves in whorls around the stem.

IN ENGLISH
Hedge Bedstraw is the most common bedstraw where I live, it grows all over the place, even as a weed in my flowerbeds (because I'm too tenderhearted to pull it off). Even the spot where I dug it up last spring near one of my peonies, it grows again, I obviously missed a piece of root which started to grow. For small dye batches I could easily collect this bedstraw from my garden, but if I want to dye more with it, it is better to grow it in bed. If you collect roots from nature, in Finland you can do it in your own land, or with the landowner's permission, and it is a good practice to always leave a some of the plants untouched.
Below there is a picture of Hedge Bedstraw growing in the outskirts of my garden.

IN ENGLISH
Last year I also got Lady's Bedstraw/Yellow Bedstraw (Galium verum) to my red bed, it is now most rare  of these three in Finland. Lady's Bedstraw has 8 or more leaves in whorls and the leaves are very thin, needle-like.
Hedge Bedstraw has hybridized with Lady's Bedstraw, and these hybrids (Galium x pomeranicum) are much more common in Finland than the real Yellow Bedstraw. They may look very much alike, but the hybrids have quadrangular stem like the Hedge Bedstraw. Last week I though I found Lady's Bedstraws near our house, but no, these are also hybrids with the quadrangular stem. Pictures of these above and below, and they look very much like Lady's Bedstraw. For dyeing purposes I don't know if there is difference since both parents of the hybrid, Hedge Bedstraw and Lady's Bedstraw, have red colorants in their roots.

Dividing madder Krapin jakamista

IN ENGLISH
Yesterday I was weeding my little madder bed. Right next to one of the oldest madder plants there was a big dandelion, and I couldn't get it out without lifting the madder up, too. This madder was three years old, and I was surprised to see how deep and wide the roots were. I had planted the seedlings 30 cm apart three years ago, and clearly that was too close. 50cm would have been better, even though now in the spring the plants look kind of lost being so far from each other
.
Tällaisia krappeja on helpompi hoitaa isommassa mittakaavassa, koska rivivälejä pystyy haraamaan. Nähtävästi nämä minun krappini ovat juuri sellaista kantaa, vaikka itse en olisi pistänyt pahakseni juurivesoja:)

IN ENGLISH
While I had the plant dug up, I decided to divide it in two with a sharp knife. I was going to try dividing my madder plants this spring but time just flew away and I never did it, but now I can see with this one plant how it reacts to dividing. I had read previously that madder also spreads by underground stolons, but my own plants have not done that, at least not so far. Then this morning I read in Cardon's book that there are different strains of madder in cultivation, and some of them have very short rhizomes and don't spread, this makes them easier to grow in the field in bigger scale. Apparently my madder plants are this kind, but wouldn't have minded the spreading at all:)

IN ENGLISH
Before replanting I trimmed the roots, and took even one bigger piece from near the top.   Below there is a picture of the roots after washing them. I'm going to cut them to smaller pieces when they are still fresh, and dry for future use, when I get more of them.

Rhubarb in spring Raparperia keväällä

IN ENGLISH
The spring colors of  ornamental rhubarb leaves are wonderful, it is too bad they don't attach to wool. That's the case with most plants, the color you see in fresh plant parts is not the one you get when you dye with them. You need to know what the actual dyes are in each plant, and then you can figure how they will react in the dyebath.. or at least you have some idea.
The best dyestuffs in rhubarb are in the roots, and it is yellow of course. Sure the leaves give also yellow, but it is not as lightfast as the yellow from the roots. When the yellow from the leaves fades in bright sunlight, the yellow/gold from the roots if anything only gets darker or browner. Used together for instance with madder, you never notice the change. Roots also contain tannins and can be used without any other mordant and the color is fast.

I have dug up rhubarb roots in several springs from different plants, but now I have some dried roots still left and I don't think I need more. After digging up the rhubarb and harvesting some of it's roots, it is best to let the plant recover for several years before digging it up again. Also after replanting it is a good idea not to harvest leaves (or stalks) for a year or two, so that the plant can grow stronger.

The ornamental rhubarb in the picture also grows a fabulous red flower stalk, so I enjoy more of it as it is, but I do have one white flowering ornamental rhubarb which I will propably dig up next year, and harvest it's roots.
And meanwhile my edible rhubarbs are best used as pie with ice-cream:)

Mascha's Twined mittens

Tästä tekniikasta on enemmän 2005 Knitty- lehdessä, englanniksi täällä.
Mascha on tehnyt myös ilmaisen ohjeen näihin lapasiin, ohje löytyy Ravelrystä, nimelläTwined Knitting Mittens by Maschas Maschen, täältä.
Täytyy vielä laittaa toinenkin linkki Maschan blogiin, johon hän on eilen laittanut kuvan Aarni-langasta tekemästään kirjoneulepaidasta, hieno, onnittelut.

IN ENGLISH
Mascha from Germany has knitted beautiful traditional style mittens, and she has used our Maahinen yarn for the mittens. She used Twined knitting-technique for the mittens, which makes the mittens warmer and firmer. You can read more about this technique in an editorial in 2005 Knitty, here.
Mascha has also made a free pattern for these mittens in Ravelry, the name is Twined Knitting Mittens by Maschas Maschen, it is here.
I have to add another link to Mascha's blog post from yesterday, where she shows a beautiful Fair Isle sweater made from Aarni. Congratulations Mascha:)

While waiting for snow to melt Lumen sulamista odotellessa

IN ENGLISH
Snow is melting fast, but still there is quite a lot of it. Snowdrops are my absolute favourites, at least until something else comes up.
I have sown japanese indgo (Persicaria tinctoria) inside and it has sprouted last week very nicely. I am growing more of it this year and some woad, too, but not many other dyeplants. My madderbed is still covered by snow, but I am going to dig some of it up this spring and divide it, I haven't sown any new seeds of it. And only other annual dyeplants I am going to sow are weld, a little Coreopsis and some dahlias.
I have a couple of years old sumach plant (Rhus typhina),which I haven't used it for dyeing so far, only admired it's leaves.  They are not very common in Finland, this is just about the northest where it will grow, I think. No animal has eaten it previous winters,  so I didn't protect it, but food was so scarce this winter for wild hares, that they have eaten the bark from my sumach! Next winter I will have to put some protection around the stem. I would have thought that it was so full of tannins and tasting so bad that they would not have eaten it, but apparently not so. Luckily it will start to grow from the ground again, I hope.

While I don't have anything interesting to write about dyeing now, for those who want to read about dyeing and mordanting experiments, I can recommend Jarek's blog from Himalyas.

Happy Birthday to my Blog Syntymäpäiväonnitteluja blogilleni

IN ENGLISH
Four years ago last week  I started this blog and a lot has happened since then. My blog has inspired me to do more experiments and to try new dyestuffs and new ways to dye with natural dyes, and also documenting these are now better, expecially because of the  photos. I have learned more because of the blog, through comments other people have left to me and through links to other websites and  blogs about natural dyeing and nature. Many of my experiments have become long-term projects which will give more in the end. I am also now growing more of my own dyeplants than earlier, and I know more about growing them. Thanks to my blog I myself have grown as a dyer, and been able to share my knowledge. Without my blog I wouldn't be where I am now!

During these four years also Riihivilla has changed. There is now the online shop and our mitten kits are being shipped practically  all over the world, and so we sell less often now at the market. My husband still goes to the market on Saturdays and  2-3 days a week in the summer months, but all my own time goes to dyeing and making more things to sell at the market and for the online shop. When I was younger I thought I could do everything and anything, but with age comes the knowledge that there are limits to what one person can do. I have had to learn to say no, and decide what my focus is. As nice as it was being at the market, selling and meeting people, it is not sensible, if it means that I run out of thing to sell when there is no-one home making more. And I want to keep it simple and small-scale and not hire anyone else. This is also one of the reasons why I don't have workshops or take visitors at home. It sounds really unfriendly but that's just the way it is:( My thing is dyeing my wool with natural dyes for sale, and my goal to try to become a  better natural dyer. I want to share my knowledge and experiences through my blog, and connect with others this way, from home,  whenever I have something to share, and free time to write it.  Eventhough I don't blog very often, I still feel it is very much my own way of communicating, and I hope a long life to my blog, and many more birthdays to come.

Last week a got a Beautiful Blogger award from Saila's blog Saaripalsta, thank you Saila for your flattering words! I am not good at forwarding these awards, but I will  give a mental award to all of you who read my blog:)
