Observations about bedstraws, and spring Huomioita mataroista ja kevättä

Olen tänä keväänä kiinnittänyt huomiota siihen miten eri aikaan eri matarat alkavat kasvaa. Paimenmatara (Galium album), alla, ja etelänpaimenmatara (Galium mollugo), yllä, olivat ensimmäisenä nousemassa jo kuukausi sitten ja niillä on jo pitkät vihreät versot.

IN ENGLISH
I have been watching my bedstraws this spring and been amazed how big differences there are in when they start to grow. Hedge Bedstraw (Galium album), below, and Southern Hedge Bedstraw (Galium mollugo), above, were the first to come up already a month ago and they are now well into growing. I have grown Galium mollugo from seeds bought from Germany, Galium album is native here.

IN ENGLISH
Lady's bedstraw (Galium verum) is more fragile plant and it comes up later. I probably lost my Lady's Bedstraw last year when I started weeding my red bed too early and didn't remember where it was growing. I'm still hoping that a small piece of it may come up somewhere. Besides it, I have many plants of a native cross of Galium verum and Galium album which is called Galium x pomeranicum, picture below. It is slightly later to start to grow than Galium album. Galium verum has become very rare here because this cross has replaced it in the nature. I have written here about how to tell them apart.

Värimaratti (Asperula tinctoria) on noussut viime viikon aikana, kuva alla.

IN ENGLISH
Asperula tinctoria has come up in the past week, picture below. These are plants which I planted last year and I think they have established well.

Kaikkein myöhäisimpänä luonnonvaraisista mataroista on nousemassa ahomatara (Galium boreale).

IN ENGLISH
The latest of native bedstraws to start growing is Northern Bedstraw (Galium boreale). I can see how well it has adapted to growing in the north: it comes up when the winter is surely over and it is the first of the bedstraws to flower already in the beginning of July so that it's seeds have enough time to ripen before autumn. I wonder if the differences in the growth rhythm in different bedstraws have any effect on when there is most dye in their roots? If there are most dye in the roots when the plants are resting in the winter, then the harvesting of Hedge Bedstraws should maybe benefit from very early spring or late in the autumn.

IN ENGLISH
Madder (Rubia tinctoria) has also survived the winter and is coming up.

IN ENGLISH
Wild madder (Rubia peregrina) doesn't show any life yet, but I'm hoping it is still alive. I remember also last year my bigger plants of wild madder being very late, and the plant in the picture is one of the wild madder which I grew from seeds from France last year, and this was their first winter outside.

Värikasvimaata, etualalla krappimaa, ja lapion luo kylvin eilen väriresedaa (Reseda luteola)
Kaikkien ylläolevien mataroiden juurista voi saada punaista väriä.

My dyeplant beds, in the foreground madder beds and in the bed where the spade is I sowed weld (Reseda luteola) yesterday. All bedstraws and madders in my garden yield red dye from their roots.

Eilen oli taas nätti päivä, mutta vapun aattona täälläkin satoi parin tunnin ajan lunta!
Voi kukkaressukoita etupihan kukkapenkissä, kuvia alla.

Yesterday the weather was nice but day before that it snowed!! for two hours, very unusual in south of Finland this late in the spring. My poor flowers in the front garden beds in the pictures below.

It is a wonder how tough they are, yesterday Hellebores, Corydalis, Crocus and early Tulips continued flowering like there had been no snow at all.

  2. I don't know which varieties of bedstraw I have here, but it is one of the first Spring plants and has just begun showing up in the past few days. There is always a LOT of it here, so I am going to search your blog for more details about using it for dyeing - thank you!

  3. Hi Quinn, I think all bedstraws are worth to try for dyeing, I'm not sure about american species but if the roots are orange/red, then they might be good. Use the same way as madder except use twice as much as you would use madder.

  4. sinulla onkin paljon mataroita, saatko jo niistä värjäämiseen asti juuria kuivattavaksi? täälkin lumisade yllätti ennen vappua, mut hyvin kevätkukat sen kestivät. kuvasi ovat todella viehättäviä. en ole aiemmin nähnytkään vaaleanpunaisia kiurunkannuksia, aika veikeän näköisiä.

  5. Wow, fascinating...it's like a little bedstraw botanical garden. What a great collection. Thanks for sharing. I just have Lady's Bedstraw (Galium verum) and Madder in my garden. I've dyed with my own Madder - beautiful reds, but haven't tried Bedstraw yet - I've weeded out a few volunteers and saved the roots, slowing accumulating enough for a test dye pot.

Your spring flowers are very nice, I'm so happy its finally turning green here on the Canadian Prairies. Lots of Japanese indigo and coreopsis seedlings on the window sill.

    Cheers,
    Trevor

    1. Hi Trevor, you are right, I like to collect plants, even if I can't dye large amount with them. Some day I hope to have them big enough that I can compare them with each other (as a dye) and with madder, but of course I already know that madder produces more and fatter roots than bedstraws but in norther Finland madder may not survive and then it would be good if the bedstraws would be an alternative. I think they form bigger roots when they are grown in bed rather than when they grow wild among grasses.

I have also a lot of japanese indigo growing (still inside the greenhouse), it is my most used dye plant. I sowed also weld a while ago and goldenrods are growing well, too. I didn't sow coreopsis this year though it is a good plant.
