Some plant losses after last winter Muutamia kasvitappioita viime talven jälkeen

A year ago last winter it was very cold - 28°C after a relatively warm December. This year last week it was also cold, -24°C, and like last year, very little snow. During last week-end it snowed more, and today it is raining. These pictures are from yesterday. I have many friends who had lost many plants during last winter: because it was suddenly so cold with very little snow cover, but in my garden there were not many losses, except one which I'm writing about now.
In my garden the soil is mostly clay and prone to water logging, like the part of the garden which shows in the picture above. In another part of the garden the soil is better, more sandy and well-drained, and there I have planted my bedstraws, madders and Genista tinctoria, which all grow in that type of soil (dry and rather poor) in the nature. I have also beds for goldenrod, weld and Serratula tictoria in sandy soil, although they would also grow in clay soil. Japanese indigo and woad are mostly in clay- part of the garden, because they are used as first year crop and in clay there are more nutrients and moisture even in dry summer.
Last spring after the cold winter native bedstraws came up normally, as did Asperula tinctoria and all my madder plants (Rubia tinctoria). I have grown madder since 2007. Wild madder (Rubia peregrina) didn't come up at all! I had planted several plants in sandy soil in raised bed in the spring 2014, about it here, three were big plants and the rest were smaller plants which I had grown from seeds from France. All of them had come up in spring 2015 after quite warm and short winter. I didn't expect any trouble with it because madder had grown well for me already several years and always over-wintered well. In retrospect I know now I should have protected the soil from freezing deep with dry oak leaves or such, after hearing the weather forecast predicting very cold weather in December 2015. I didn't realize wild madder is more tender than ordinary madder. Should it be more tender?? All summer I looked at their bed hoping that they would come up late, but in the autumn I had to give up hope, they had all died last winter.

Another dye plant which suffered from last winter was Genista tinctoria. They were old plants, planted in 2010, and had come through already several winters, but about half of them didn't start to grow in the spring. I'm glad that half did. Even in normal winters it's branches above snow die, but it has always started to grow from the ground, and I could dye with it in late summer. We have here wild hares which like to eat it's branches in the winter, and if I don't protect them, they get eaten. This happened last Sunday to a plant in the picture above, but I'm positive it starts to grow from the ground in the spring.
Let's hope the coldest part of the winter is now over (though it may not be), and all the rest of my plants come up well in the spring.

Elecampane as a dye plant?
Lisätietoa löysin sitten Su Griersonin kirjasta The Color Couldron.

I got a question about Elecampane (Inula helenium) as a dye. Though it grows in my garden, I have never used it for dyeing. I suspect it will give yellow from leaves and flowers, as many other plants from Compositae-family do. It isn't mentioned among classical and most common dye plants, so that must be why I had never paid attention to it. Someday it would be fun and interesting to try every plant I have in my garden and in wild in our property, but so far I have used plants which I know now to be good.
I then started to research elecampane, and in the internet many pages state it as a dye plant, and even it's seeds are sold for growing dye plants. However I couldn't find information about how to dye with it and what dyes it actually contains. Most pages just said that you can get blue (!) from it. Botanical.com pages say that "A blue dye has been extracted from the root, bruised and macerated and mingled with ashes and whortleberries.". It sounds strange to me, more like the blue would come from blue berries rather than elecampane roots.
As always, I found good references to this from Su Grierson's book The Color Couldron. Grierson says that the reports of it's use as a dye seem to originate from Lightfoot: Flora Scotica (1777) and in that book is just the same recipe as above. Since then other writers seem to have copied that recipe (without trying it, it seems to me because nobody had given any better recipe). Grierson was as thorough as always, and made several dye tests with elecampane roots, also with ashes and whortleberries, but got no blue. The colour she got was "unimpressive dull grey/green shade".
So it is possible that blue from elecampane roots is one of the myths of natural dyeing. Elecampane is a big and common plant, so perhaps someone can succeed also with it's root, but it may be best to use leaves and flowers for yellow, to avoid disappointments. It is nice to know I have it in the garden, and maybe someday I will try it also, until then it is a good plant for butterflies.

Yllä olevat langat on kuitenkin värjätty veriseitikeillä.
Mycologia -lehdessä (2012) on englanninkielinen artikkeli näistä sienistä: Niskanen, Laine ja Liimatainen: Cortinarius sanguineus and equally red species in Europe with an emphasis on northern European material.
IN ENGLISH
Here in south western Finland mushroom Cortinarius sanguineus is not common. Forests are mainly dry pine forests, and I can find only a handful of this mushroom, if even that. They grow more in middle or east of Finland in more moist forests. Though it contains a good proportion of dye in it, it is a very small mushroom and at least my experience is that to get dark good reds you need a lot of mushrooms. For lighter colors smaller amounts is enough. Cortinarius semisanguineus which is more common here is a close relative to C.sanguineus. Caps of C.semisanguineus are a better source of mushroom reds for me because they are more abundant and it is a bigger mushroom (though not very big). Both of these Cortinarius mushrooms contain anthraquinone dyes.
However, these yarns are dyed with C.sanguineus.
In early September I got about one kilo of fresh mushrooms from a friend who had collected them in eastern Finland. They were already a little rotten when I got them and I dyed 100g of yarn with them and got the top color in the picture. Quite nice dark red. The after bath gave me 200grams of the bottom color, and possibly I would have gotten also more lighter colours but I don't dye a lot of pale colours because they don't sell well. Dark colors are always sold fast:)
The yarn in the middle was dyed just before Christmas with dried C.semisanguineus, and it is also a nice red. I used 100grams of dried mushrooms to 100 grams of yarn. All yarns were mordanted with alum and cream of tartar. Mushrooms were boiled for one hour and strained right after boiling. The temperature in the dye bath with yarns was 60-70C, which I have found gives better colors than simmering. These yarns are now in my shop.
I would have thought that a kilo of fresh mushrooms becomes about 100grams of dried mushrooms, but for some reason I didn't get as dark color now with dried mushrooms as I got with fresh ones. I suspect that one reason for this may be that the fresh mushrooms were very old and partly rotten. I have noticed previously that old Cortinarius mushrooms give better reds than young specimen which give more orange, and have more yellow dyes in them and less reds, so this might be the reason now, too. Also, in recent studies Cortinarius sanguineus has been split to two different species: C.sanguineus and C.vitiosus, which are quite similar. I don't know which ones I had, though C.sanguineus is more likely. C.vitiosus is not so common, and according to book Luonnonväriaineet by Räisänen, Primetta and Niinimäki, it doesn't contain emodin like C.sanguineus so the color it would give could be more red. There is an article about these mushrooms (not dye wise) in Mycologia (2012): Cortinarius sanguineus and equally red species in Europe with an emphasis on northern European material written by Niskanen, Laine and Liimatainen.

Seasons Greetings Hyvää joulua
Veriseitikin punaista ja valkoisen sijasta vihreää joulua kaikille!
Happy holidays to everyone with red from mushroom Cortinarius sanguineus.
After cold and snow in November, it has now been warmer and the snow has melted away, though ground is still frozen. Christmas will be green instead of white here this year:)

Back to my roots Takaisin juurilleni
Otan pienen pätkän talteen jokaisesta värjätystä erästä, tässä näytteet tänä vuonna värjätyistä langoista. Kylläpä näyttääkin oranssisävyiseltä, vihreät eivät näy ollenkaan, vaikka on niitä kuitenkin tullut värjättyä aika paljon.
IN ENGLISH
I take a sample of yarn from every dyeing I do, here are samples from this year. It looks so orange, and like there were no greens at all, but they just don't show, I have dyed a lot of greens:) In the beginning of the year the dye lot number was 4403 and now it is 4668, so there has been 265 dye lots this year so far. Most of the yarn is sold at the market in Helsinki, but also a lot has gone to my mitten kits. I counted that right now I have 29 different kits for sale, and for them I need 48 different dyed colors, plus the natural colors from the sheep. Many color are similar, but not quite the same, for instance the pink for Willow Herb kit is different than the pink for Linnea or Rosebud kits though both are dyed with cochineal. I need six different greens from mushroom Tapinella atrotomentosa alone for different kits. Most dye lots are around 500g but some are 700-800g and some only 100g, depending how much I have plants or mushrooms in question. Some dyeings are experiments, and if they don't give any special color, I will over dye them. Also many greens and purples are done by dyeing the yarn twice.
This is what I want to do, and what I enjoy doing and want to improve my skill in dyeing. Of course selling at the market is also important and that is how we make our living by selling the yarns and hats and mittens which I knit during the winter. In the online shop the mitten kits are the most important article which I try to keep fully stocked all the time.
Next year I will be 60 years old, and already it seems that older I get the more time everything takes. There are still years before retirement, and I am sure I will do this even beyond that, but in order to be able to do that (and also something else in life, like gardening, which I enjoy so much in my free time), I will have to let go of something.
So what I decided to do was that yesterday I deleted my Facebook account. Fb has never been my thing, and it has always been like: I should write this, should post that, should be more active all the time, and I never had enough time and so I felt bad about it all the time. It was negative energy.
My own work in the contrary is more quiet, even meditative at best, and I like to feel at peace when I do it. Now that I let go of Fb, I already feel that I have more energy. I understand that this is not good for many who followed Riihivilla through Facebook, and I am sorry, but I had to do something for myself. This feels right, simplifying things and getting back to my roots.
My blog is now over ten years old and this is my way of keeping in contact with others, and also writing down my experiences. This has helped me a lot, and I hope also others have benefited from it. Some time during the coming winter there may be a quiet period in the blog: I am waiting to have an eye operation, and I don't know yet when that is, but I hope that after that my eyesight and also everything else will become bright again, and new spring and summer will be good.

Verbascums as dyeplants Tulikukat värikasveina
IN ENGLISH
Mostly I use plants or mushrooms which I get a lot, but sometimes I also use plants available to me also in small amounts to dye only a couple skeins. Mulleins (Verbascum) are such plants. I grow them as ornamental plants in my garden in flowerbeds, and to prevent them to seeding too much around, I have to cut them after flowering anyway, so why not using them to dye yarn before putting them to compost.
In Harald Böhmer's book Koekboya he says that Verbascum species contain same flavonoids as weld, that is luteolin. This is why I tried them many years ago, and since then have dyed with them some skeins every summer. The color they have given me is not as strong yellow as I get from weld. Perhaps if I cut them in the beginning of flowering they would give stronger color, but as I like their towering flowers so much in the garden I always wait until they are almost finished flowering before I cut them. Böhmer says that as late as 1980s the nomads in Turkey used native Verbascums leaves to dye black (leaves contain tannins and together with iron they give black), and in some places in Turkey Verbascums are still used to dye yellow.
I grow two species of Verbascums, yellow flowering biennal Verbascum thapsus which I believe is called mullein in English, and white flowering perennial Verbascum nigrum 'Album'. I use leaves and flower stalks from both plants and I use them fresh. According to Böhmer dried and powdered mullein has been known on one occasion to cause allergic reaction to the dyer and he recommends caution with it. The actual dye (luteolin) in them is safe in the yarns. So, I use fresh plants about 2kg/100g of yarn. Leaves are surprisingly light even if they are big, the flower stalks are heavier. With alum mordant they give nice yellow like in the top picture, and with iron without alum I have gotten greenish grey. I don't have picture of it because the yarns are already all sold out last summer. In fact I'm writing this posting because a customer later in the autumn wrote to me and asked if I had written about dyeing with Verbascums in my blog:)
Tulikukat kukkivat puutarhassani heinäkuun loppupuolella.
Verbascums are flowering in my garden in the end of July.

Wool for next year Villaa ensi vuodeksi
IN ENGLISH
Today we went to pick up wool. The wool we use for our yarn comes from Finnsheep from Ulle and Sebastian Nurmi's organic farm in Raasepori. They have their own web site where you can read more about them and their sheep and cattle, and look at the photo gallery of the work at the farm. The farm is called Bovik. They sell organic grown lamb meat, and beef from Finnish landrace called kyyttö, so if you live in Finland and are interested in tasty organic meat, please contact them through their web site.
My pictures of sheep are not good, they were taken with my husbands cell phone (we didn't have camera with us), but I wanted you to see those lovely Finnsheep which produce wool to Riihivilla yarn.
Next I sort out the wool and decide which kind of yarn is made from each sack, and then we take the wool to spinnery Pirtin Kehräämö where they spin the yarn for us during this winter. As you can see from the picture below, it is already winter here.

Asklöv hat and Betua hat and mittens
IN ENGLISH
During this autumn two patterns have been published, which have been knitted with our yarn.
Pom Pom Magazinen no 18 on Asklöv-pipo, suunnittelija Nicolina Lindsten.
IN ENGLISH
In Pom Pom Maganize no 18 there is Asklöv hat by Nicolina Lindsten, which is knitted with Velho. It has Natural White and Yellow dyed with buckthorn bark. You can find the instruction for the hat in the magazine, issue 18, which you can buy either in paper version or in digital form here. All issue 18 was dedicated to yarns dyed with natural dyes, and there are also many other really nice designs and patterns in that magazine. This was the first time I read it, and I was very impressed by it, I can warmly recommend Pom Pom Magazine. Photo below is by Pom Pom Magazine/Rachel Hayton.
Toinen langoistamme tehty kaunis malli on Katrine Birkenwasserin Betua Hat and Mittens. Hieno!

Another beautiful pattern made from our yarns is Betua Hat and Mittens by Katrine Birkenwasser. You can find it in Ravelry, here. Katrine has used Aarni for it, green dyed with japanese indigo and goldenrod, and orange selection, dyed with mushrooms. Her pattern brings out the contrast with the colours very nicely, and the technique she has used was new to me. Great!

Japanese indigo and woad this year Väritatar ja morsinko tänä vuonna
Kesä on mennyt.
Kuva on otettu 28.6.
IN ENGLISH
Summer is over. The market season was busy but very good. There were lot of knitting tourists and many knew us and came specially to our booth while they were visiting Helsinki. Weather was more cloudy and cooler this summer than usually, and perhaps that also contributed to good sales, though I'm not sure about that. True buyers buy whatever the weather.
I liked the weather this summer, but it seems that it wasn't so good for my japanese indigo. Temperatures were around 20C most of the summer, but it was mostly cloudy and rained a lot. There was only one sunny and hot week in July all summer. The blues I got from my plants were much paler this year than previously, and I think this was due to the weather. Last year it was also rainy summer in June and July, but then all August was sunny and hot, so that helped very much with japanese indigo. The first frost came a week ago, and now the season for japanese indigo here is over.
I planted japanese indigo outside in the end of May, kept them covered with horticultural fleece until end of June, though there were no night frosts.
I grew it in three beds, and besides weather, it seems that I hadn't given enough horse manure compost to one of the beds. In the picture below you can see the difference in the colour of the leaves of japanese indigo, the plants in the foreground are paler and I think that is because of lack of nutrients. At this point I added grass clippings (which gives nitrogen) around them. The picture was taken June 28.
Alla oleva kuva on näistä kahdesta väritatar penkistä heinäkuun lopulla.
The picture below is from these two japanese indigo beds in the end of July.
IN ENGLISH
Below japanese indigo in the end of August when I started to harvest it. From the beginning of August I take weekly one leaf and dry it to see how dark it turns and so I see how indigo precursors develop. Here in the end of this post there are pictures of leaves taken at different time. This year the leaves never became very dark so it mad me suspect that there wasn't as much indigo in them as usually.
IN ENGLISH
Another thing which made me suspect everything was not well, was that many plants had reddish edges in their leaves. I understand that this is a sign of stress, either too cold, too dry or lack of nutrients. It wasn't too dry this year, the opposite, but there was very little sun, and perhaps something else was not right. I have grown japanese indigo now for quite a number of years, but there are still things to learn! Next year I'll be more exact with compost, and I will plant some also inside the greenhouse, you never know what the summer will be like.
IN ENGLISH
I dyed a lot of medium and light blues, but this year I will have to dye darker blues with natural indigo powder. It usually takes all September to harvest and dye with my own japanese indigo plants. These yarns will have to last until new harvest next year, mainly they go to my mitten kits. After finishing the dyeing I now choose which lots are good for which kits, every dye lot is slightly different and they are not all good for some special pattern. Some I also choose to dyeing with some yellow so the result is green. Rest of the yarns I sell mostly at the market, some can also go to the online shop, though the market is our main selling place. Before selling them, I have to re-skein them, because they are always more or less messy after dyeing and washing, and I don't want mu customers to deal with that. Japanese indigo dyeing season is short for me, rest of the year I can dye with natural indigo powder, which gives a little different shade of blues.
IN ENGLISH
Also woad gave only light blues this year. If I hadn't gotten darker colours from japanese indigo and woad in previous years, I now would have started to doubt myself. Though it can still be my fault, too little compost for japanese indigo and the one thing I did differently with woad was that usually I harvest them in August first time and then second time in October. This year I was too busy with the market in August, and I did't have time to harvest woad until now, and so the leaves were old and big, albeit good looking. 15 kilos of leaves gave me only 1,5 kilos of light blue yarns. No mid blues not to speak of darker blues. Previous years I had dyed with the same amount of leaves twice as much blue as now, and half of it darker colours. Now even when I extracted the indigo from woad, I noticed that the liquid was not as blue as it should have been, and even the first bath gave light blue, and there was not blue left for after baths. Well, this year was like this, hopefully next year will be better, and I do need light blues for my mitten kits, so there is use for them, too:)

Market and planting indigo and fructose-indigo vat Toria, väritattaren istutusta ja indigo-fruktoosikyyppi
Kesän torikausi Helsingin Kauppatorilla on taas alkanut.
The summer season at the market Kauppatori in Helsinki has started. In May my husband has been at the market about three days a week, and from next week on we'll be there four or five days a week. I will also be there some days.
Our booth is on the right in the picture, we have a Riihivilla sign, and also you will identify us also from our Finnsheep yarns dyed with natural dyes, mitten kits and my husbands nature photos.
April was quite cold but now it has been unusually warm considering this time of year, and couple of days ago I started to plant japanese indigo outside. After taking the pictures I covered them with horticultural fleece to keep them as warm as possible.
Tänä vuonna kylvin morsingon suoraan maahan huhtikuussa, reilu kuukausi sitten.
This year I sowed woad straight outside in April, a little over a month ago. Germination took almost three weeks, because of the cold weather I think, but now they are growing well. Next I have to thin them, because there are too many plants too close to each other.
IN ENGLISH
Ten days ago I made fructose indigo vat. I wanted to try common sugar in it (because I read someone succeeding with it). I had 5 litres of water, 20grams of indigo, 40 grams of lime, 60 grams of sugar and handful of madder. Ordinary sugar didn't start to work, so after waiting for two hours I added about 80 grams of honey (because my fructose had gotten moist in storage and became a rock hard clump which I couldn't break to smaller pieces). Honey worked wonderfully in only 15 minutes and the vat was ready to dye. I dyed several skeins with the vat then, and because I needed the pot to something else I poured the vat to the red bucket and covered it with a lid. The next day I noticed that the vat was working still fine, but I didn't have time to dye with it. All that week and the next week also I was busy with other things, but then yesterday I looked at the bucket and to my surprise it had good blue froth on top and the liquid below was perfect brownish yellow. Bucket had been outside in our porch all this ten days, and even though the day temperatures were over 20°C, the nights were between 5-10°C, so the temperature varied a lot. I had thought the vat had to be kept warm in order for it to reduce, but this lime-madder-honey-vat did it in quite cool temperature. The pH had stayed high, 10-11 (so the vat hadn't fermented which lowers the pH), and now today when I dyed with it, the temperature of the vat was 25°C. It seemed to be enough because it dyed well.
The light blue on the right is how it looked after the first dip today, after second dip the colour became darker. The greens were yellows overdyed with indigo (in hydrosulfite vat) though I usually prefer to dye first blue and then yellow, but I had some ugly yellows which I wanted to dye green.
One more picture, apple trees are full of flowers right now:)

Spring work Kevätpuuhia
Yllä olevassa kuvassa on viime viikolla itäneitä taimia. Nämä on kylvetty kaksi vuotta vanhoista siemenistä, joita olin säilyttänyt kuivina pakastimessa, pakattuna tiiviiseen muovipussiin.
IN ENGLISH
Spring is advancing fast. I had sown japanese indigo inside in end of March. Plants in the picture below were sown from last years fresh seeds, and they germinated in about one week. It was still too cold outside and inside there was too warm and too little light and so the seedlings grew long stems, but it doesn't matter, because now that I prick them apart to own pots, I can plant them a little deeper.
The plants in the picture above were sown from two years old seeds, which I had kept dry in ziplog bag in the freezer. They germinated well, but germination took twice as long as that of fresh seeds.
If kept in room temperature I doubt that they would have germinated.
The other seedlings in the picture below are thyme seedlings (for eating), also waiting to be pricked out.
Punarinta on seurannut kevätpuuhia ja tullut kasvihuoneeseen sisällekin.
Robin is following me in the garden, it has come even inside my greenhouse.
IN ENGLISH
The frost has melted from the ground and I have been able to begin work in the garden. I've grown japanese indigo in raised beds in front of the greenhouse, and there are also beds behind it, but there has been a problem that soil doesn't stay in the bed but rolls down to the paths. So last week my husband started to build wooden edges to my japanese indigo bed, and it will keep the soil where it should be:). Here are pictures from the start, I'm so happy!
IN ENGLISH
When I took these pictures I hadn't yet cleared the japanese indigo plants from last year to compost, but yesterday I did it. I prepared one of the beds and sowed woad also yesterday. Usually I had grown woad first inside, and then planted them outside when they are bigger, but as woad can stand night frosts and I had weed free good bed for them, I'm going to try it this way this year. It rained last night, and it is still raining, so the seeds will get a good start. We can still have freezing night temperatures until late May, so I have to grow japanese indigo bigger in the heated green house before planting them out. Woad is easier in northern climates, but I like japanese indigo so much, that I grow it more than woad.

Colour from polypore Ischnoderma benzoinum Värjäystä tervakäävällä
IN ENGLISH
In March I dyed with some dried Ischnoderma benzoinum-polypores.
I know I have somewhere also a picture of this polypore growing on pine stump, but I couldn't find that picture now. I'll add it later when or if I find it.
This polypore is common here in coniferous forests. It is medium or small size and not very thick polypore, it is an annual species which means that it dies in the winter and grows a new fruiting body each autumn. It can also grow on hardwood, but I've seen it only on pines or spruces.
This is what color it gave. I had 550grams of dried polypores, I boiled them for three hours, and then strained the very black bath. I dyed 200grams of mordanted wool in the bath and got medium yellowish brown and the afterbath gave the ligher colour.
I made a selection to my online shop of this darker yarn, then pale yellow yarn dyed with polypore Fomes fomentarius and light greyish lilac colour dyed with birch bark with iron mordant.
