Week 17 Apple tree bark Viikko 17 Omenapuun kuorella värjääminen

En kuitenkaan löytänyt mitä väriaineita omenapuun kuoressa on.

IN ENGLISH
In April we pruned apple trees in the garden and I peeled some bark from them to dye with. It was easier to peel bark from younger stems, maybe two or three year old ones, than very old branches. I don't know if there would have been difference in colour from young or older bark. Apple tree bark is an old dye, according to Grierson it has been used already in 1558 ("Secrets of Maister Alexis of Piemnot": inner bark of apple was used for a yellow dye, with bones and horn being added to the dyebath). I couldn't find what are the dyes in apple bark.

Right after peeling, the inner bark of was pale greenish white, in the picture above on the right, but after drying the bark for a week, it turned yellowish, on the left in the same picture.
I had 130g of dried bark. I cut them to smaller pieces and soaked for a week, as Grierson advises. I added two tablespoonfuls of washing soda to the soaking water because our water is acidic. Already after soaking the water was very strongly coloured, reddish orange. After soaking I boiled the barks for two hours. After straining off the bath, I added 100g of yarn mordanted with alum and CoT, and pieces of yarn with no mordant and with iron mordant. Yarns started taking on the colour very slowly, but after simmering for two hours the mordanted yarn became strong golden or bronze yellow, very nice result. To the piece of yarn with no mordant the colour didn't take hardly at all, it was very pale beige, but unfortunately I don't have it in the picture, because when the yarns were drying outside overnight, the unmordanted piece had vanished and I couldn't find it in the morning. I suspect a squirrel or a bird had taken it to it's nest!
The yarn mordanted with iron became dark greenish brown. I got also a lighter colour from the same bath later.
Apple tree bark seems to be a very useful source of colour, and often in the spring there is material when the trees are pruned. Peeling of bark from them was a bit more laborous than peeling bark from buckthorns, because buckthorn stems were more even and in apple tree branches there were more knots.

  1. Tulipa voimakas keltainen!

  2. Gorgeous yellow! I'm surprised the unmordanted yarn didn't take much colour. I got lovely pinks (or whatever the precise English term for our "roza" colour).

    1. Thank you Ladka:)
Yes, there was no hint of pink in the unmordanted yarn. You can never be sure that you get the same as someone else with these plants collected from nature, it seems! Madder, cochineal and dyes like that you can mostly be sure what you get.
