Here is a picture of seeds of Chinese woad (Isatis indigotica), on the left, then in the middle woad (Isatis tinctoria), and on the right seeds of japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria). Woad seeds are from the UK, I had already sown woad bought from Finland, but the seeds looked like the the ones in the middle. I think they are different shape than the chinese woad seeds.
I was surprised to read in Cardon's book that there are many species and groups of species that belong to genus Isatis. The taxonomy of woads is still unclear, for example some consider Chinese woad a subspecies of Isatis tinctoria and others regard them two distinctly different species. Cardon says that Chinese woad has higher isatan A-content and lower indican content than I.tinctoria. It is interesting to try to dye with them both:)
Kuva on otettu 24.4 eli taimet olivat viiden päivän ikäisiä. Tänään niissä näkyy jo ensimmäistä lehteä.

I had sown the japanese indigo seeds April 11th and covered them with vermiculite which lets some light through. The seeds germinated in warm in April 19th, there was no difference in the germination of the seeds purchased in different places. Interestingly the seeds I got last year from Helen germinated two days faster than these seeds. The picture above is from the seedlings when they were five days old (April 24th) and now today the first true leaf is showing.
Kohta on aika koulia taimet erikseen.

I had sown the woad seeds April 11th inside. The chinese woad on the right germinated April 17th and woad (Isatis tinctoria) on the left two days later April 19th. There were less seeds of chinese woad packet, so the seedlings have more room and that is propably why they are a little bigger now, the picture was taken today. Soon I have to prick them to separate pots.
Woad could be sown directly outside, but for me it is easier to grow them first in the greenhouse and plant them outside when they are bigger. I then cover the bed around plants with grass clippings, that way I don't have to worry about weeds. Of course I am lucky to have the space to grow seedlings in my greenhouse.
Hi Leena! Your seedlings look lovely! You're really lucky to have the place for all these seedlings and plants later, and you're also very kind to report your experiments, thank you.
