Testing for lightfastness Valonkestotesti

Kokeilin huhtikuun alussa värjäämäni koivunkuoripuretuksen valonkestoa, lankojen värjäyksestä postaus 9.huhtikuuta. Vasemmalla on pelkkä koivunkuoriliemessä ilman muuta puretusta värjätty vaalea lanka, jonka laitoin sitten värjäytymään krappiliemeen tuloksena keskimmäinen väri.
In English
I tested yarns that I had dyed in early April (posted April 9th) with birch bark and madder for lightfastness. The yarn on the left was dyed with birch bark without any mordant, then in the middle there is the same birch bark yarn which I dyed with madder, no other mordant except the birch bark and on the right there is yarn dyed with madder mordanted with alum, which I knew would have good lightfastness.
These yarns were outside for little over two weeks, half of them covered. Most of the time it was very sunny, so the circumstances were nearly perfect, only the time for testing could have been longer.
In the bottom picture you can see the results: the light tan yarn had faded a little, it is hard to see in the picture as the color is so light to begin with, but in reality you can see the difference between the covered and uncovered parts. But to my surprise the middle yarn, dyed with birch bark and madder with no other mordant had not faded at all, the fasteness was as good as in the yarn dyed with madder with alum. Birch bark changes the color to more orange with madder, but it seems to work well as a mordant with madder.

  1. Hyvä havainto koivupuretteesta!
    Oletko tehnyt keltaisille valonkestotestejä?

Hih! Tuli mieleeni, että testien vertailuarvona voisi käyttää annattolla värjättyä lankaa - valoa on saatu tarpeeksi näytteille kun annattolangoista on väri pois :D

  3. Thank you so much for doing this test and for sharing it with us. What a fascinating result! You've inspired me to start doing some of my own lightfastness tests.
