My indigo fermentation vat follow-up Lopputulos indigon käymiskyyppikokeilustani

IN ENGLISH
Last summer I tried indigo fermentation vat, here is the posting about it. After the first two weeks I didn't write anything about it and you might have guessed that it didn't work out. The bucket with the vat was in the greenhouse until autumn and nothing more happened in it. In August after one month from the beginning, I dyed a small skein in it, but got only very pale blue, so there was a small amount of reduced indigo in the vat, but not near as much as there should have been considering the amount of indigo I put in it in the beginning. With that amount I could have dyed at least two kilos of good blue with chemical reduction.
Last week, just before the cold and snow came here, I emptied the bucket to my big indigo pot, added hydrosulfit to remove the oxygen and dyed. I got blue, but now quite so dark as I would have expected, so I think some of the indigo was ruined in the experiment.

I have been trying to think what went wrong, and even though I have read that someone has succeeded  in low temperatures, I now believe that low night temperatures (18-20°C/64°F) together with the strong fluctuation of the temperature was one big reason. Helen Melvin's book and blog say that the temperature needs to be stable and high enough (30-40C/86-104°F), and have to belive her!
After the first week there was one cold night (12°C/53°F) and also the day after was cool, and it seems that after that nothing much happened. The pH stayed 9 all rest of the summer, but the vat never started to ferment properly again.
I will have to think about compost or some other place where the temperature stays more stable. Apparently urine fermentation vat is easier in cold climates than this kind of madder-bran vat.

Another possible trouble was that the fermentation was too strong in the beginning, it lowered the pH too quickly and too low, and I should have kept better eye on that in the first couple of days, adding more lye couple of times during the daytime, so that the vat hadn't become too sour. I will have think of ways to slow down the fermentation..
Now I have all winter to plan how to try again nex summer, I would really love to get the fermentation vat going, so that i wouldn't need any chemicals. Of course I could use electricity.
I have to admire dyers of old times, managing without any chemicals or electricity!

A big grasshopper seemed to think it was warm enough on top of the dark vat and plastic. I saw it there basking in the sun in August couple of days, and I have never seen so big grasshopper before:)

  1. Hi Leena- I too am very interested in the low temperature vat that comes into order at 25 degrees C or so and without having to add anything to maintain the pH -this must be different to the one you and I do and I wish I l knew how it was working. next summer I must try it. :)
Quite a few people have had trouble with the madder bran vat and in almost every case it is down to rapid fermentation at the beginning causing a drop in the pH so that the vat goes acid and the indigo is lost . So I think you are right in identifying this as your problem.
I also think that the drop in temperature overnight might have been a problem too. When I was trying theses vats out I had them in different places all over the house and I found that the ones that got cold at night always seemed to fail.

  2. Thanks Helen for confirming my suspicions.Fermentation vat seems easy to use in warm countries (at lesst when you read about it), but here it is not so easy or else I am doing something wrong.
Perhaps it works better with couched woad or sukumo from japanese indigo, because they have different bacteria??

Hi Ladka, I had to go and get the camera when I saw the grasshopper the first time:)

  3. if this helps i've also encountered problems w. fermentation vats here in spain.the temperature has to keep stable at around 30º at the low end.if not it gives very pale colors. i'm using a japanese recipe with bran -ash lye water which i find easier to control that the madder one which didn't do anything for me.
i'm very curious about how to bring back a vat from the cold.

  4. Hi Leena:
I tried the madder-bran indigo vat in Vancouver, Canada in the summer (July - August)and had quite good success for a couple of months. I think the vat fermentation was very slow at the beginning as I did not think it was even going to work. It took a couple of weeks before anything happened. I had the vat in the garage to give it some protection from temperature variation. The blue I got was not as deep as with a chemical reduction but it has proved to be light fast.

  5. Thanks neki and Joanne for sharing you experiences.
    Joanne, what was your temperature?
Would perhaps smaller amount of madder+bran give slower fermentation? Yet another thing to try out.

  6. Voisit koittaa vuorata saavin jollain eristeellä - styroksilla tai olkivuokrauksella tms. silloin liemi varmaan pysyisi lämpimänä.

  8. Leena:

Temperature during July and August during the day in Vancouver is around 23 -25C. The nights are around 16-18C I think.
