Seed mail Siemenpostia

Ensin löysin Ranskasta paikan B & T World Seeds'in josta tilasin heti tammikuun alussa väritatarta eli Persicaria tinctoriaa (ja vähän muitakin siemeniä, hmm hmm).

Muitakin värikasvien siemeniä on odottamassa kevättä, sain mm villin krapin, Rubia peregrinan, siemeniä värjäysystävältä ja muutenkin krappimaa tulee laajenemaan ensi kesänä.

Spring doesn't seem so far away when I can order and think about seeds. My japanese indigo dyeings last summer were so successful and exciting that I had to order more seeds for next summer, as I didn't manage to get any seeds from my own plants.

First in the beginning of January I ordered it's seeds from B & T World Seeds from France (and some other seeds hopped into my shopping cart, too..). I got the other seeds right the next week but unfortunately the Persicaria tinctoria seeds, which I was most expecting, were left for later delivery.. they said that it could be even two months before they were available. Well, then I got worried that what if I don't get them at all, and then found another place from the US where I ordered more Persicaria tinctoria seeds (for even cheaper price) JL Hudson Seedsman. The seeds came quickly and guess what, of course this week I got a letter from France with Persicaria tinctoria seeds in it. So now I have a lot of japanese indigo seeds! Perhaps I'll sell some plants in the spring if I can't find place for all of them. Although I know I will need a lot of blue yarn:)

I have also woad, Isatis tinctoria, seeds waiting for spring, but it will be exciting to dye with Chinese woad, Isatis indigotica. I found those seeds also from the US, a seed company called Sand Mountain Herb, which I can recommend from their fast service. Chinese indigo is said to give more blue that ordinary woad.

I have also other dyeplant seeds waiting for spring, among other I got wild madder seeds, Rubia peregrina, from a friend:) I had already planned to make a larger madder bed anyway, more madder, Rubia tinctoria, because red is a color I need all the time and it would be fun to experiment with my own madder.

Then something else: I have to recommend Helen's writing about mordanting in her blog: it is really worth reading, and not just once:)
A small detail from her long posting: she writes that if you are using cochineal, mordanting with cream of tartar (and alum) fixes more colour onto the fibers. I have just dyed with cochineal and I have noticed it earlier, too, that it s really true: if I use yarn only mordanted with alum, the color will be much paler than if I use yarn mordanted with alum and cream of tartar. I haven't noticed this much difference with any other natural dyestuff. Of course cream of tartar can change the hue with many other dyestuffs, but with cochineal it does something else, too. Or that is what I think :)

Dye notes Värjäysmuistiinpanoja

Kiitokset kaikille onnentoivotuksista.
Tämä vuosi alkoi tosi hyvissä merkeissä. Juuri ennen Knitter's Review'n ilmestymistä olin lähettänyt vähän lankalajitelmia Englantiin Ecoknits'ille, joiden periaatteet sopivat hyvin yhteen omieni kanssa.

01 on luonnonvalkoinen, 02 vaalean harmaa jne. Värjäämättömilläkin villoilla on eroa.

Thank you everyone for the congratulations.
This year has started really well. Just before the Knitter's Review came out, I had sent some dyed yarn selections to Ecoknits in the UK, I think their principles match with mine, and I was honored that Kris asked to have my yarn in her shop. The timing was good for them, because since the yarn review came out and surprised me, I have hardly had enough time to dye for my own shop and for the mitten kits. Sockyarns and Maahinen-yarns are still waiting to be dyed, and this year January seems not to be a holiday month for me like before:) Not even knitting, just dyeing.
Another good thing that happened was that a friend of mine had dried dye mushrooms still left and I could buy them from her, and now I have enough of mushrooms for some time. Also this lucky thing happenend last week. All good things seem to happen all at once:)

Ladka asked earlier about how I keep my dyenotes. It is very old-fashioned. I have a thick notebook (actually I just started fourth notebook),where I write short notes of each dyeing: where the dyestuff came from, how much did I use, how long did I soak and boil or simmered it, how high the temperature was (about), how much yarn did I dye, what mordant did I use and how the color turned out.
In reality for the dyesuffs that I use the most, I have the same recipe (in my head, written down years ago) all the time, and so I write down only the date and how much yarn was dyed. Even when I use the same recipe, I don't get the exactly the same color. The time of soaking and/or simmering vary, and with mushrooms the age of the mushrooms can be different even when I have picked and dried them at the same time.
When I write down that I have soaked the dyestuff overnight, the actual time can be anything between 12 to 18 hours. Then sometimes the temperature of the dyebath raises quickly to simmer, sometimes it takes more time, sometimes the bath is close to boiling, sometimes it stays nicely to just simmer. I don't often write small things like this down, even though they might make a difference. In more industrial environment the temperatures are easier to manage than with my dyepots, which are mostly heated by firewood.
I have learned not to promise to try to repeat the color, sometimes I do get the same color, but it it certain that if I want it to be the same, it never will be, and all I get is a lot of stress.
Then there are different afterbaths, many times I save the bath and use it to dye sometime later (like now I have a few buckets of used dyebaths from before Christmas). It might dye nicely again after sitting for a few days or weeks, then again it might only give me a tan base for some brighter and better color. I have to confess that keeping notes of all the afterbaths is something I don't do well.

When I dye with plants or mushrooms which I don't use weekly or every month, I write down the recipes more carefully. This way it is easy to read later what I had done and how the color had turned out, and I might have better chance to learn from earlier experience. I used to think I remember more than I actually do, I have learned this the hard way:)

For all the dyed yarns that I sell, I give a number (I am now in a number little over 2100) and I keep a sample of the yarn in my folder with information what that number was dyed with and a reference in my notebook. There is a picture below of one of my sample folders, not so tidy, but it works.
The numbers of the undyed natural yarns stay partly the same: the last two numbers show the color of the yarn, like 01 is natural white, 02 is natural light grey and so on. The first two numbers of the natural yarns tell the year when that particular yarn was spun, like 0801 tells me it is a natural white yarn spun in the beginning of 2008. 08201 is a natural white spun later in 2008, after I had sold all the first spinning lot. So there are color differences also in natural undyed yarns and it is important to keep track of them, too.

I have sometime tried to keep my notes in a computer, but haven't had patience (or knowledge)enough to make good and simple chart, where the information would be easy and fast to write.
So for now it is a pen and notebook for me:)

Knitter's Review

Just a short message why I have been so busy. Yesterday there was a Yarn Profile article about our Aarni yarn in Knitter's Review, online-knitting magazine, here. So now I am swamped with orders:) and making kits as much as I can. I have already run out of almost all the dyed yarns in the shop, but I have more half done and I will restock the shop as soon as I can, next week at the latest. So if there is now empty, please pop in after couple of days. I will have more Aarni Bloom selections ready next week and also other selections.
I'll be busy yet in the weekend dyeing more and making packages ready to leave on Monday, but my dyeings and experiments won't stop and Ladka, I was planning to answer your question with pictures here, as soon as I have time.
So good night now.

Old and New Year Vanha ja Uusi Vuosi

Mietin eilen illalla, miten paljon uutta viime vuosi toi tullessaan.

Tunne omista kasveista saadusta sinisestä on jotain hienoa!

In English
I thought about last year, how many new things and friends it had brought. Keeping this blog has helped me in making better notes of my dye experiments and also many experiments have come to real instead of just being in my head:) I have thought about some dye experiments for years, but never got around to doing them until now, and the more I dye, the more new questions come to my mind. I think that even if I live to be hundred years old, there is always something new in natural dyeing.

The three most important new things last year were first the bark dye experiments in the beginning of last year, which I have do more. At least to try them more as a mordant for other dyes, but also new experiments (this includes a bottle of vodka I have waiting LOL)
Then in the summer the growing and dyeing with japanese indigo was really something I look forward to do more this year, too. The feeling what you get when you see blue colors coming from your own plants, a lot of work but so satisfying!
In the autumn the mushroom season was not so good as before, but then dyeing with Pisolithus tinctorius was something new and exciting, even though it is one of the oldest dye mushrooms.
Also opening my own online-shop was a big thing for me, I am so glad about it:)

What about this coming new year?

The first thing is to dye new yarns to the shop, but I have all kinds of things in my mind that would be interesting to dye with. I have dried dyestuffs, but it would be also nice to try to find something from outside also this time of year. After all, winter lasts for over three months still.
I am going to grow more dyeplants, especially ones that give blues or reds, but something else, too. I don't know how I have time to take care and dye with everything, but that is one good thing with perennial plants: they are there always the next year, too:)
So, I try not to worry about everything I don't have time to do, but enjoy the things that I do.
Last summer when I didn't have time to dye with apple tree leaves right away, the color just got better and I got more of it after accidental the long soak, so sometimes good things happen when you don't expect them.

I wish all my friends and readers a colorful and happy new year, I hope we "meet" here this year, too:)
