About seeds of japanese indigo.
Last October I took inside some plants which were just started flowering or were in bud, some were kept in water and some were growing in pots. Summer 2012 was very cool here, and even though I had sown the seeds very early, none of the plants, even in my greenhouse, ripened their seeds by October, most didn't even have flower by then. The year before I got quite a lot of seeds from the greenhouse and from plants taken inside, but by the time I took them inside that year their flowering was more advanced than now.
So, this year my seed crop was a failure, I got only a very small amount from the plant in the picture above. Just barely enough for myself to sow this year.

IN ENGLISH
Plants which were only budding, like the one in the picture, when I took them inside, didn't develop practically any seeds, perhaps one or two at the most.
So now I don't have any seeds to sell, and no-one sells them in Finland (as far as I know), but you can buy japanese indigo seeds at least from Ruhlemanns in Germany and from Wildcolours  and Saith Ffynnon Wildlife Plants from the UK, and from places the the United States. Companionplants is one of the places which sells these in the US, and also IndiGrowingBlue -project may sell seeds, like they did last year.

  2. Hei Leena, parin viikon päästä näkee, miten viime vuotiset siemenet itävät, laitoin tänään purkkiin koekylvöksen. Pidän sut mielessä, samoin Ullan:)

  3. Sorry to hear your Japanese indigo seed production was a bust this time, Leena. Here I managed to get just enough for my own use but I had to bring the most mature flower stalks inside to put in vases on the windowsill. It took over a month there to develop seeds and I didn't get very many as compared to the number of flowers. The later ones I picked didn't get any seeds at all. I think our summer was warmer than yours but spring was very late so growth was slowed. Here's wishing a better result next year!

  4. Thanks Louisa, I'm glad I have just enough to sow and hopefully next summer will be better:)

  6. Hi there,
I got a bumper crop and would be happy to send some your way if you need some. Let me know if you do and how many you need! All the best!

  7. Hi Jo, how kind of you, thank you for the offer:) I have just enough for this year now, because I have some seeds left from last year, and I think they will still germinate (I just sowed some of them to see if they germinate). If next summer is also bad for seeds, then I will need new seeds, but I hope for a hot summer now.

  8. Jään mielenkiinnolla seuraamaan miten onnistut! itse varmaan yritän tilata siemeniä netin kautta - sillä sain kuningasajatuksen (??) perustaa väripuutarhan:-D tuohon pihalle. Jäin niin totaalisen koukkuun sienivärjäykseen (kiitos muuten loistavista ohjeista sivuillasi) joten seuraava luonnollisen steppi on sitten omat kasvit joilla värjätä

  11. Thank you so much for your blog - I have learned probably half of what I know about growing and dyeing with indigo from you!
I have very many indigo seeds from this year's crop, and sell them for a small amount. If you have people who want them, I would be happy to provide them. I don't know about shipping overseas, but I have so many seeds, for both white and pink flowered plants, and I hate for them to go to waste. I live in southwestern Virginia, and our growing season is long enough that the seeds mostly ripen before frost, and continue maturing after I pick them.

  12. i ended up with so much seed this year although i gave away all the extra to customers of my indigo and at workshops. in the US, you can buy good seed from Rowland Rickets Indigrowing Blue project but his seed wont be available until another few weeks i understand. i am working on making another bed for indigo in an otherwise unused part of the yard.

  13. I got seeds from Rowland Rickett's last year, and they were a very good variety of japanese indigo (Senbon), I think better than my pointed leaf variety.
