Tori on pitänyt minua kiireisenä. Viime keskiviikkona torille tuli ryhmä amerikkalaisia neulojia ja olin silloin itsekin mieheni kanssa torilla, oli oikein mukavaa olla vaihteeksi siellä ja tavata ihmisiä. Kauppakin kävi hyvin:) Seuraava päivä sitten hiukan palautti maan pinnalle, kun auto hajosi, ja tuli pakollinen tauko torimyyntiin, korjaus saatiin vasta ensi keskiviikoksi. Myös alkuviikon tilausten postitukset jäävät keskiviikkoon. Toisaalta auton puute ei haittaa omia töitäni kotona.
Töitä riittääkin: kahden viikon päästä lauantaina 8.9 klo 10-17 on Tieteiden Talolla (Kirkkokatu 6) Helsingissä Silmä, Pisto, Tikki, Takki - keittiönperäyrittäjien Käsityö- ja tarvikemarkkinat. Sama tapahtuma, joka oli vuosi sitten ensimmäistä kertaa, ja sai silloin hyvän vastaanoton. Toivottavasti myös tänä vuonna moni tulee katselemaan, ostoksille ja tapaamaan sekä myyjiä että muita käsitöiden tekijöitä. Tapahtumaan on vapaa pääsy.
Nyt on vielä kaksi viikkoa aikaa värjätä ja tehdä mahdollisimman paljon lankoja tuohon tapahtumaan.

Market has kept me busy. Last Wednesday a group of American knitters on a cruise around the Baltic visited Helsinki and us at the market. I was also at the market with my husband that day and it was so nice to be there and meet customers:) Thank you, I hope you enjoyed Helsinki and yarns you bought from us. While Wednesday was a great day, Thursday wasn't: our car broke down and it takes almost a week before we get it fixed. So I can't mail any orders until next Wednesday and DH can't go to the market until probably next Thursday. But there is a lot to do and dye at home.
Two weeks from now, September 8th, there is a small Crafts Fair for indie dyers and other small producers in Helsinki, in Tieteiden Talo, Kirkkokatu 6. The same event took place the first time last year, and was a success. I hope also this year many knitters come to see, buy and meet the sellers and other knitters in the knit cafe.
Now I have two weeks to dye and prepare as much yarns as I can for that event. There will also be new yarns for the online shop in the beginning of September.
Olen kerännyt jo ensimmäisen sadon aikaisimmista tarhapiiskuista, parhaillaan kukkivat seuraavat, jotka pitäisi kerätä mahdollisimman pian. Viimeisimpänä kukkivat sitten korkeat myöhäiset piiskut, joista saa satoa syyskuun loppupuolella.

I have already harvested the goldenrod variety which bloomed first of the three varieties I have in the garden. The next variety is blooming right now, and I should cut it as soon as possible. The latest of my goldenrods flower in the end of September.
Myös pensasväriherne (Genista tinctoria) kukkii parhaillaan, vaikka parin päivän takaiset sateet kaatoivat pensaat. Nämäkin olisivat nyt valmiita korjattavaksi värjäykseen.

My Dyer's Broom (Genista tinctoria) is flowering right now. We had heavy rain this week, and the bushes are all down. Dyer's Broom is best for dyeing when it flowers, so there is more yellow for me to harvest..
Morsinko ja väritatarkin ovat jo valmiita sadonkorjuuseen, morsinko olisi ollut valmis jo aiemminkin, mutta en ole ehtinyt kerätä niitä. Nyt sitten tänään aloitin niiden korjuun, ja kunhan morsingot on kaikki kerätty, niin sitten tulee väritattaren vuoro.
Morsinko on kasvanut hyvin viileästä kesästä huolimatta. Heinäkuussa niihin tuli paljon etanoita, mitä ei minulla ole aiemmin ollut. Etanat ehtivät syödä jonkin verran reikiä lehtiin, mutta ripottelin etanoiden ja lehtien päälle tuhkaa, ja se hävitti etanat.
Keräsin nyt ison ämpärillisen lehtiä, 7 kasvista, yhteensä 3,2kg, ja värjäsin sillä määrällä 500g tummempaa sinistä ja 400g vaaleaa sinistä. Kuva alla. Morsinkoa riittää vielä useampaan värjäykseen ja toivottavasti sitten ne vielä kasvattavat toisen sadon lokakuulle.

My woad and japanese indigo are ready for harvesting, woad was ready already couple of weeks ago, but I hadn't had time to harvest and dye with them, until now. When I have harvested all the woad, then it's time for japanese indigo.
Woad has grown well, in spite of rainy and cool summer. In July there were slugs in them, for the first time ever, and they ate small holes in the leaves before I noticed them. I sprinkled ashes over them, and over the leaves, and it killed the slugs, or at least they disappeared.
Today I cut a large bucketful of woad leaves, from 7 plants I got 3,2 kilos of leaves, and with that amount I dyed 500grams of medium blue and 400grams of lighter blue, the picture of them in the line, below. I have more woad for several harvests like this, and I hope they still have time to grow for another crop in October.

ReplyDeleteKyllä tuo morsinkoväri on sitten kaunis, ehkä kaikista kasviväreistä kaunein. Kiva, pitää katsoa jos pääsen parin viikon päästä kaupunkiin, olisi kiva taas käydä tekemässä vähän hankintoja.

Mulla kukkii omasta mielestänikin vielä aika kivasti: syyshohdekukat on kukkineet jo kohta kuukauden, ne on mun suosikkeja, ja jatkaa edelleen, leimuja on aika kivasti, viimeisiä tulikukkia, vähän päivänliljoja, vaikka ne on kauriiden herkkua, kurjenpolvi Rozanne, vaikka sen kasvutapa on aika lonkeroiva, ja sitten keltaisia. Vähän säälittää leikata piiskut, mutta pakko on, jos meinaa värjätä niillä.

I did not (to my shame) know that there were three types of Golden Rod. Could you tell me more?
I too have found that the Woad and indeed the Japansese Indigo seemed to have enjoyed the rain and are doing very well.

ReplyDeleteThere are lot of different species of goldenrods, and a lot of different garden cultivars of goldenrod bred by crossing different species. I too thought that all flower the same time, but there are differences in the flower time as well as in height and how fast they spread, some don't spread hardly at all.
I have gotten all my goldenrods in plant swaps or from friends, so unfortunately I don't know the names of them, but by coincidence they all flower in different times, even though they are planted side by side. I suspect one of them might be a cultivar called 'Goldkind'(also called 'Golden Baby'), it is short and doesn't spread. There is a goldenrod species called Solidago juncea, which is said to be the earliest and it has been used when breeding garden goldenrods, I suspect the earliest on in my garden has it in the parentage, but I don't know the cultivar name.
The latest of my goldenrods is very tall and late, and I think it is Solidago gigantea.
All of my goldenrods give the same good yellow color, so it seems it doesn't matter what cultivar or species you have, but I like that I have plants flowering in the different times, it makes it easier to harvest them when I don't have to do it all at the same time.
The wild goldenrod is blooming here in Ohio now. It is not very big because of the drought we have had this summer. I almost have a few skeins of yarn spun up and then I will cut the woad and over dye it with goldenrod. Love the green I get. The leaves of my japanese indigo turned blue that I dried ,so it is ready too. Still no roving from the mill. And I'm running out of undyed fiber. Just dyed some fiber with cochineal( alum,cream of tartar, and tin one pot mordant).Posted it on my stash page on ravelry. A light raspberry. Love the blues you got.
