IN ENGLISH
Winter was long this year, and in parts of the garden the ground is still frozen. The first spring flowers are flowering.
A week ago April 2nd I sowed japanese indigo seeds inside. This is a bit later than I usually sow them, but there is still time for them to grow and now that they have germinated I will take them to my green house. In the picture above I have just sown them, the seeds on the right have not been so well cleaned as the ones in the left side, but I don't think it matters. After sowing I covered the seeds with vermiculite, and then put plastic cover over them to keep them moist. I kept them inside in about +18°C, and this morning I noticed that they had germinated. Even though I  got new seeds last autumn, I now sowed older seeds which I had kept dry in the freezer. If the seeds are dry and the bag is sealed well, the seeds store well this way. If I keep japanese indigo seeds in room temperature, they will be viable for one year. If they are kept in the fridge, they are viable for two years, and if they are kept dry and well sealed in the freezer in -20°C they keep longer in my experience. The seeds I sowed now were from autumn 2013 and they germinated well as you can see from the picture below:)

  2. Hi Leena! The hellebores in the last picture look so "springy"! By the way, did the seeds of the four sorts germinate well?

    1. Hi Ladka, thank you:)
Sadly the seeds you sent haven't germinated. I still have those pots in case they still germinate, but many times Helleborus seeds go into deep dormant state when they dry, and so it is possible that they still germinate, but maybe not:(
Thanks anyway, it was worth a try:)
