Dyeing with birch bark Koivunkuorella värjääminen

Last summer my farmer friends felled birches for firewood, and I got fresh birch bark from them. These birches were felled in June and they were about middle aged trees. I'm not sure if they were silver (Betula pendula) or white birches (Betula pubescens) or mixture of both, because both species grow here native. When I had dyed previously with birch bark, here, I had bark from very old birches, but I didn't know the species of birches either then. The  difference then and now is at least the age of the trees from which the bark was from. In the left corner of the picture above you can see how these barks look when dry.

No 4 on toinen jälkiväri samasta liemestä, myös rauta-esipuretettu.

In November I dyed for the first time with these barks from last summer. The dyes from barks are usually tannins which need to be extracted in alkaline fermentation, in normal boiling method they only yield pale beiges, at least that is my experience.
I soaked one kilo of barks and added washing soda so that the pH raised to 9. Already the next day the bath was dark red. I let the barks soak for a month and it started to ferment, and pH dropped to 6. I didn't add more washing soda during fermentation. After one month I simmered the barks and bath in about 60°C for couple of hours and then let cool until next day when I strained the bath. The bath looked beautiful red as did the soaking pieces of bark.
I used this bath to dye (at 60°C) first 200grams of wool, one skein with no mordant (no 1) and one with alum and cream of tartar mordant (no 2). I expected to get equal strength of color to both yarns but the skein with no mordant came out much paler color. I then used the bath second time adding three skeins of  yarn pre mordanted with iron (1%), no alum, and it turned lavender grey, no 3. No 4 is the second after bath, it was also pre-mordanted with iron.

I did lightfastness test for these yarns in the beginning of January when it was cold and sunny and snow reflected the sun, and their color didn't change at all in two weeks time in our sunny porch, but of course the days were short that time of year, so I probably should repeat the test in April when the days are longer.

I started the next experiment in the beginning of January, soaking barks in alkaline bath now for 10 days, in the end pH was 6. I simmered like earlier, strained the bath and dyed like earlier, except the temperature of the dye bath raised to 75°C by accident ( I try to keep the temperature of baths containing tannins lower because my yarns may become harsh with the combination of tannins and hight temperature). Even though the bath was good red,  the premordanted yarn became only pale tan color, no 5
I started to think that perhaps short fermentation time was the reason, so I put the used barks back to the bath, and added washing soda and waited four more weeks. This time the bath didn't ferment properly any more, and even in the end pH was 7-8. I simmered the barks, and dyed alum-cream of tartar mordanted yarns in the strained bath, and this time they became better pink. I now noticed that I forgot them from the picture, but their color is the same as  no 2 and no 8. Now it seems to me that long fermentation is beneficial to get more pinkish color from birch barks, and also this time the temperature of the dye bath got up to 80°, so I would say that it doesn't matter to the color if the dye temperature is 60 or 80.
I  still have this bath in a bucket and I put one pink skein in it, I want to see if the color deepens in cold soak in couple of weeks.

Kolmas kokeilu koivunkuorilla.
Puretettu tästä värjäyksestä on no 7.

Third experiment with birch barks.
I fermented barks in alkaline bath like earlier, now I used 800grams of barks and fermenting time was 4 weeks. In the end pH was 6 and bath dark red ( pictures in the beginning of this posting are from that bath). Now after fermenting I strained the bath without simmering. I added two skeins of alum-cream of tartar mordanted wool, but the bath only dyed them uneven yellowish peach color, no 6. Not at all pink!
So I put the barks back to the bath and simmered them for three hours and let cool overnight. Then I added another two mordanted skeins, and control piece of unmordanted wool.  Mordanted yarns dyed pink, no 7, and unmordanted paler color, no 8. I used the same bath to dye another two skeins the same pink as no 7, and the third time the same bath gave less pink and more yellowish color. In the pictures this pink (no 2 and 7) look lighter than it really is, I was pleased with it.
Also this bath is still in a bucket with one skein of wool to see if it became darker in time.

After these experiments in the future I will dye with birch bark first fermenting the barks in alkaline bath for several weeks, and when dyeing using mordanted yarn. Without mordant the color seems too pale for my taste, although it could be a good base for other dyes. It is useful to use twice or three times the weight of barks to to weight of wool and also afterbaths are useful. It would seem to me that there is no difference in color if the pH of the actual dye bath is 6 or 8. One method which I haven't yet tried is to keep the fermenting bath pH high all the time, and then add yarns to cool alkaline bath (without simmering), and dye there for a longer period of time. In acid bath without simmering the pink/red color didn't attach to the yarn (no 6), though the dyeing time was only one day.
I haven't found information about dyes in birch bark anywhere, but likely there are tannins, and according to Krista Vajanto's recent dissertation Dyes and Dyeing Methods in Late Iron Age Finland, there are unknown flavoids in birch bark. There is link to pdf of this paper in the bottom of this link, it is good reading:)

I have these birch barks also for sale in my shop.

With Love Mittens Rakkaudella -lapaset

I have now finished another new mitten pattern which I have been knitting in January when we had very cold weather (it is now a little bit warmer though spring is not yet here). These mittens have similar side patterns as Oak Valley mittens, and the hearts in the middle are the same hearts by designed my mother as in Lucky Hearts or Blue Hearts mittens. I experimented with different colors and liked this combination best.
The colors in these mittens are dark brownish purple and red, muted pink  and winered, and orange red, and they are dyed with madder and cochineal or a combination of these two.
The name of these mittens is With Love (from me to you) and it is now available in my shop.
