My weld this summer Väriresedani tänä kesänä

Last summer my weld grew well and I got to dye good yellow with it and also harvest some seeds for the future. I didn't dye then with all the plants, because I thought they might survive over winter better is they are not cut down. However last autumn it was very rainy and then winter was quite cold, and all plants looked dead in the spring. Maybe their bed wasn't well drained enough. The picture below is how weld bed looked in April. The roots of the plants were rotted. This usually happens also to my woad plants during winter, though I know that for some people over here they do overwinter.

Later in May I noticed that one small weld had stayed alive. It was so small last year and didn't flower. Perhaps the reason why my big plants died was that they had already flowered last year! Usually biennal plants die after flowering, how did I not remember this. The advise to grow weld is that the first year they grow leaves and then flower only in the second summer, but my weld plants have almost always flowered in the first summer if sown in spring! Maybe it is the long days here, or something like that which makes weld start to flower already during the first summer. It doesn't matter, actually it is better this way, because now I can harvest it the first summer and don't have to worry about winters. The best dye content in weld is when it is flowering, or a bit after flowering when the first seeds are ripening. If I sowed it later in the summer, maybe in August, then they would be small enough to go through winter, but if sown in the spring then they will flower here in August.

This is the one surviving weld plant today, it is already growing flower stalk. I can dye with it in July, I think, though it isn't very bushy at least not yet, so there isn't going to be a lot of material to dye with.

Because my old plants looked dead in April, I sowed more weld, but used old seeds, which didn't germinate at all. I should have sown my own seeds from last summer instead of old bought seeds.
That is why it was such a nice surprise to see a patch of seedlings in the last years weld bed. When they had just germinated I wasn't sure if they were weld or some weed, but when they had grown bigger they were clearly weld:). Picture below is from this morning.
Today it has been a cloudy day, first in a long time after sunny days, so today I moved the self sown weld seedlings to another bed where they have more room to grow, and watered them well (it has been really really dry). I hope they start to grow and give me more weld yellow in the end of summer.

  1. Here in Vancouver, Canada, my weld sometimes bolts the first year but usually overwinters as a rosette. It self-seeds so much that I hardly have to start seeds myself! Our winters are relatively mild and rainy with temps rarely ever going down to -10C. Right now the second-year weld is taller than I am!

    1. Hi Louisa, you are so lucky to have already such big plants! I'm hoping my one last years plant would get bushier so I would get more plant material from it.
Is interesting that weld doesn't always bolt the first year in Vancouver.
I was thinking that maybe day length might affect it. Here right now it sun sets about 11 at night and rises at 4 in the morning, so the night is only five hours long. It still gets shorter for the next week and after that slowly again starts to get longer. I looked up that in Vancouver the night is now about 8 hours long (from nine in the evening until 5 in the morning).
Maybe I'm wrong and it has nothing to do with day length, but other growing conditions affect it:).
I will post later in the summer how these self sown seedlings behave this year here. Not many people grow weld here, but it would be interesting to hear how their plants behave.
This is the first time I have gotten self sown seedlings, earlier I might have harvested all plants with seedheads and that's why there never was seedlings.
