While waiting for snow to melt Lumen sulamista odotellessa

IN ENGLISH
Snow is melting fast, but still there is quite a lot of it. Snowdrops are my absolute favourites, at least until something else comes up.
I have sown japanese indgo (Persicaria tinctoria) inside and it has sprouted last week very nicely. I am growing more of it this year and some woad, too, but not many other dyeplants. My madderbed is still covered by snow, but I am going to dig some of it up this spring and divide it, I haven't sown any new seeds of it. And only other annual dyeplants I am going to sow are weld, a little Coreopsis and some dahlias.
I have a couple of years old sumach plant (Rhus typhina),which I haven't used it for dyeing so far, only admired it's leaves.  They are not very common in Finland, this is just about the northest where it will grow, I think. No animal has eaten it previous winters,  so I didn't protect it, but food was so scarce this winter for wild hares, that they have eaten the bark from my sumach! Next winter I will have to put some protection around the stem. I would have thought that it was so full of tannins and tasting so bad that they would not have eaten it, but apparently not so. Luckily it will start to grow from the ground again, I hope.

While I don't have anything interesting to write about dyeing now, for those who want to read about dyeing and mordanting experiments, I can recommend Jarek's blog from Himalyas.

  1. Ai, sumakkikin on värjäyskasvi? Olen nähnyt parimetrisiä sumakkipuita menestymässä Ahvenanmaalla, joten ajattelin kokeilla sitä itsekin.
Ranskassa, missä kasviin tutustuin, se on pieni vitsaus puutarhoissa erittäin runsaine juuriversoiluineen. Eli varmasti sinukin sumakkisi osaa tehdä uudet versot juuresta, ne eivät välttämättä lähde edes kasvin tyveltä vaan jopa metrin päästä, jos puu on jo suuri!

  2. I've sown indigo this week too. Last year I read that they do not do so well out doors so I kept them in pots on the window sill. They didn't do very well. This year i think I will just see if they do better out doors. sown some madder, woad, weld and dyers chamomile. First time for them. Was reading your article from a couple of years ago about birch bark. Does it have to be harvested from felled trees or is there a way to gently collect some from standing trees? xJ

  3. Oh gosh, now I'm imagining those hares having really red colored droppings,it must be lovely in the snow though. Hopefully spring will come soon now.

I'm sorry to say, that I don't think there is a good way to take birch bark from living trees. They start to bleed very easily if the bark is removed, and get damaged. The white outer bark is not good for dyeing or mordanting, only the inner reddish brown bark, but the color it gives is quite pale, so perhaps you could get the same color from something else easier. The birch bark bath is really dark red, but I haven't managed to get that color to my wool from the bark.

  6. meant to say snow drops, for some reason we used to call them crocuses in my family in poland, funny how these things stick with you....

actually, every time i look at your blog i am reminded of my childhood. your area is so similar to the eastern poland i grew up in....

    thanks for all those pictures....
