This and that Sitä ja tätä

It is so snowy and winter here right now, and still at least two more months until spring, even though the weather forecast promises little warmer now (but still below freezing).. and more snow. I'm so happy to have dried dyestuffs, and most of all mushrooms to dye with, last week I have dyed more olive greens for the mitten kits and also some for the shop.

Also a week ago I finally did Riihivilla Facebook pages, where I try to write short updates once in a while of what is happening. Longer dye-related posts will still be here in my blog, when I have something to write about:)
I have also written in the pages section of the blog about mordanting, but that is only in Finnish, I'm sorry.

Two weeks ago I sowed some older japanese indigo seeds to see if they still germinate. I sowed ten seeds per variety, and five of ten germinated in ten days in room temperature, so they are still good:) I just need to sow a little more of them in the spring to get the same number of plants as I had last year.

When I was looking at the seeds, I noticed that the seeds of different varietys also look different. NO 1 are the seeds of the round leaf variety, those seeds are darker brownish black and smaller than the seeds of the pointed leaf variety, NO 2, which seeds are lighter brown in color and slightly bigger.
No 3 are 'Senbon' seeds, they look like intermediate of the first two varietys.
All seeds germinated, so this doesn't matter in any way, I just found it interesting that not only the leaves of the plant look different but also the seeds.

IN ENGLISH
About seeds of japanese indigo.
Last October I took inside some plants which were just started flowering or were in bud, some were kept in water and some were growing in pots. Summer 2012 was very cool here, and even though I had sown the seeds very early, none of the plants, even in my greenhouse, ripened their seeds by October, most didn't even have flower by then. The year before I got quite a lot of seeds from the greenhouse and from plants taken inside, but by the time I took them inside that year their flowering was more advanced than now.
So, this year my seed crop was a failure, I got only a very small amount from the plant in the picture above. Just barely enough for myself to sow this year.

IN ENGLISH
Plants which were only budding, like the one in the picture, when I took them inside, didn't develop practically any seeds, perhaps one or two at the most.
So now I don't have any seeds to sell, and no-one sells them in Finland (as far as I know), but you can buy japanese indigo seeds at least from Ruhlemanns in Germany and from Wildcolours  and Saith Ffynnon Wildlife Plants from the UK, and from places the the United States. Companionplants is one of the places which sells these in the US, and also IndiGrowingBlue -project may sell seeds, like they did last year.

Happy New Year Hyvää uutta vuotta

Vuosi menee niin nopeasti. Työntäyteisesti, lankoja värjätessä ja puutarhassa. Monet kokeilut jäivät tekemättä, mutta ehkäpä tulevana vuonna. Omat indigokasvit, väritatar ja morsinko, olivat viime vuonnakin niitä, mitkä kiehtoivat eniten, eivätkä ne vieläkään paljastaneet kaikkia salaisuuksiaan. Puhumattakaan tietysti orakkaista.

IN ENGLISH
A year went by so fast. Working, dyeing and gardening. I didn't have time to do as many experiments as I would have liked to, but there is always a next year. I was most of all fascinated (again) by my own grown japanese indigo and woad, and there is still a lot to learn about them for me. Not to speak of the tooth fungi, more mysteries there.
Here are some pictures from this past year, my dye plants, dye baths, yarns and kits.
I also want to thank all of you who had bought my yarns and kits, I wish everyone a happy new year!

Tinder polypore and cochineal Taulakääpä- ja kokenillivärjäyksiä

IN ENGLISH
Since I read many years ago  from Cardon's Natural Dyes how tinder polypore (Fomes fomentarius) polypore has been used in medieval Italy when dyeing with red insect dyes (kermes), I have been wanting to try it with cochineal. In the medieval recipes there is an ingredient called popo or pococco and the names most likely refer to tinder polypore or/and Polyporus mori -polypore.
Tinder polypore is very common perennial polypore here in Finland, growing  mostly on old and decaying birches, and it is very easy to find.

Yllä olevissa kuvissa on nuorehkoja taulakääpiä kuvattu nyt joulukuussa, alla on tyypillisiä kavionmuotoisia vanhoja taulakääpiä kuvattu loppukesällä.

IN ENGLISH
In the pictures above there are young and middle aged tinder polypores photographed now in December, and in the pictures below are old typical hoof-shaped polypores in late summer.

IN ENGLISH
According to books tinder polypore gives without mordant beige (Bessette and Sundström), with alum mordant light  golden brown (Bessette), orange brown (Sundström) and brownish yellow (Lundmark). With iron mordant it gives olive (Bessette) or dark brown (Sundström).

I used now 200grams of mixed aged semi-dry fresh polypores  cut to small pieces. I soaked them for two days, and it seemed they didn't give hardly any any color during soaking. I then boiled them for two hours, and added a glug of ammonia to boiling polypores to raise the pH to 10. The usual advise when extracting color from polypores, is to raise the pH.
Soon after adding ammonia the bath turned dark brown and after boiling for two hours, I let the bath cool down until the next day, when I strained the bath. In the picture below are the polypores after straining and the dark bath.

IN ENGLISH
The pH of the bath was now neutral and I dyed several samples of yarn in this bath, together 100grams.
In the picture below
1. unmordanted dyed for one hour
2. premordanted with alum and cream of tartar, dyed for one hour
3. unmordanted dyed for one hour, then post mordanted with iron for 15 minutes
4. premordanted with alum and cream of tartar, dyed for one hour, then post mordanted with iron for 15 minutes

The results were paler than I expected, no golden brown or orange brown, and even post mordanting with iron resulted only pale dirty greyish olives. I think that next time I will use more polypores for the same weight of fiber.

5. sama purettamaton lanka mikä on no 1
6. sama lanka kuin no 2
7. sama lanka kuin no 4
8. sama lanka kuin no 3
Normaalilla alunapuretetulla kokenillivärillä on hyvä valonkesto.

IN ENGLISH
Then I tried how these yarns once dyed with tinder polypore, change when dyed with cochineal. I used 8g of cochineal per 100g of yarn (8%) and I had also added 4% cream of tartar to the bath.
Here are explanations to the picture (so all these samples were first dyed with tinder polypore and then with cochineal, all the yarns were white to begin with):
5.the same unmordanted yarn as in no 1
6. the same yarn as in no 2
7. the same yarn as in no 4
8. the same yarn as in no 3
9. compraison yarn, an unmordanted yarn, NOT dyed with tinder bracket

Afterwards I remembered that I had not had  a yarn mordanted with alum but not with tinder polypore,  but even without it you can see how there are differences in these yarns. No 1 is darker and more saturated color than no 9, so tinder bracket did improve the color there.
When there is more sun after a month or two, I will put samples of these yarns outside to our porch to test the lightfastness. The normal alum mordanted yarn dyed with cochineal has quite good lightfastness, so it will be interesting to see how the unmordanted tinder polypore dyed  yarn no 5 keeps it's color (especially compared to no 9 with no tinder polypore, but I am quite positive about it.
I also like the colors with iron mordant, no 7 and 8.
I will continue experiments with tinder polypore as long as I have some dried polypore left, and I will easily get more fresh ones, when the winter is over. When the polypores are frozen, they are very hard to get from the trees. I will also have to experiment if there are differences in tinder polypores of different age.

Northern Knits Gifts

Tänään oli postilaatikossa mukava kirja: Lucinda Guyn uusin kirja Northern Knits Gifts, Thoughtful Projects inspired by folk traditions.

IN ENGLISH
Today there was an anticipated book in the mailbox: Lucinda Guy's newest book Northern Knits Gifts, Thoughtful Projects inspired by folk traditions. 20 small knitting projects, inspired by Scandinavian knitting unique heritage and history. The patterns are not replicate of any original knits from museums, but rather inspired by them and made to contemporary projects. The techniques used are traditional to each country, and Lucinda tells about each project about the traditions and history connected to it, and where she has gotten the inspiration.
Besides Scandinavia, also Estonia and Faroe Islands are included, and there are 2-3 projects to each country. I think Lucinda Guy has succeeded well in getting the feel of each country's knitting.
All yarns used for these projects are made of 100% pure wool, and many are from small sustainable suppliers using indigenous sheep breeds, or from manufacturers with a long history.
Lucinda Guy has chosen our yarn, Riihivilla Aarni, from Finland. The mittens and hat (Tovio Mittens and Hat) on the cover of the book are made of Aarni, and in the book there is  also Onni Child's Sweater and Hat knitted with Aarni. I think they reflect Finnish stranded knitting well. Thank you Lucinda, I wish all the success to this book!

Madder Krappi

IN ENGLISH
I was organizing my photos from last summer, so here are some of my madder:)
My oldest madder plants are now four years old and I could have harvested them this year, but I didn't have the time last spring, and in the autumn I didn't want to do it, because I wanted to replant smaller roots, and I wasn't sure if they had time to root properly before the winter (and it was good I didn't because it's been really cold lately here, so the ground may be frozen deep). I know they root if I divide them in the spring, so I'm going to harvest them next spring.
I think now I have so many plants, that from now on I don't have to sow them, I can divide and replant them when I harvest every year.

Last spring I sowed more madder, here they are just after germination.

Tässä samat kasvit viiden viikon ikäisinä valmiina istutettavaksi ulos.

Here they are five weeks old ready to be transplanted outside.

Nämä taas ovat kaksi vuotiaita taimia.
Alla kuvassa kasvihuonevärjäystä, tosin ostokrapilla Lähi-idästä.
Tätä punaista on mm nyt punaisissa Tulppaani-lapaspaketeissa.

Above two year old plants.
Below a photo of my cold dyeing madder bath last summer, this color  is not from my own grown madder, though, but from madder I have bought. I have used this red to Red Tulips mitten kits.

Dyeing with fallen maple leaves Värjäystä syksyn vaahteranlehdilllä

Väri on mielestäni ihan kaunis, vaikkakin hiukan samea.

IN ENGLISH
For a long time I had planned to dye with fallen autumn leaves, and finally this autumn I did it.
A month ago just before the first frosts the maples by our drive had dropped most of their leaves. This year they didn't get orange colors, only yellows, it must be because we had such a rainy autumn. It was easy to collect two big bucketfuls of recently fallen leaves, 1,5kg in each bucket. I poured warm water on top of the leaves and left to soak. The leaves in the other bucket soaked for one week, in the other for two weeks, before I simmered the leaves. When simmering, I added two tablespoonfuls of washing soda to the bath to raise the pH, like I usually do with fresh green plants.

After simmering for two hours, I strained the bath, let it cool and the next day dyed 100grams of yarn mordanted with alum and cream of tartar in each  bath. In the first bath I remembered to add also a piece of unmordanted yarn for comparaison. In the picture below: on the top the unmordanted yarn ( which I expected to become darker because I thought there were a lot of tannins in the leaves, but the yarn turned out quite pale). The sample in the middle was mordanted and it is from the same bath as the unmordanted, leaves soaked for one week. The bottom sample is from the leaves soaked for two weeks, so clearly the longer soaking released more dyes from the leaves. The simmering and dyeing was done the same way, the only difference is the time the leaves soaked before simmering.
I like the colors, even though they are not very bright.
After I had finished with these leaves, it was too late to collect more, but I will definitely use fallen maple leave next year, too. They are so easy and quick to collect, and the color they gave is ok:)

Gardening challenge Puutarhahaaste

Nämä on kylvetty kaksi vuotta sitten.

IN ENGLISH
This posting has nothing to do with dyeing, it is about my garden. Saila from Saaripalsta passed me a challenge and I'm supposed to tell what plants I am going to buy and plant next year. Usually I'm not good at answering to challenges but gardening is so close to my heart, so I'm going to answer this one:). I rarely buy plants, most of my plants are grown from seeds, or I have gotten them in plants swaps or from gardening friends.

Anyway, I can tell about what plants I am going to grow from seed next year. I have already bought seeds of different polyanthus primulas, like the one in the picture above, which is called 'Reverie', and it is so beautiful. I had sown it two years ago and it flowered this year the first time. I love all primulas, and I can never have enough of them. I have now seeds of other blue shades, too. I have bought the seeds from France from Barnhaven.

IN ENGLISH
I especially love all spring flowers, and can't have enough of them. So last winter I sowed different kinds of  trout lilies (Erythronium) and Trilliums. The trout lily in the picture is the only one I have had flowering, it is a hybrid called 'Padoga', but I am waiting for the seeds from last year to sprout next spring, and then after three or four years I will have many more flowering trout lilies. Trilliums probably need seven years to reach flowering size from sowing, but I don't mind: by sowing I will get more plants (and cheaper) which are adapted to growing conditions in my garden. In the garden years go by fast:)

IN ENGLISH
I have also sown more hellebores last year, and more already this autumn. I have grown the ones in the pictures several years ago, and now sowed seeds from my own plants and also bought some new seeds of different colors. Every spring it is so exciting to wait for new plants to flower.

Peonies are also my passion, I have bought them, and I'm sure I will buy one or two more next autumn. Peonies are best bought and planted bareroot in the autumn. However, many of my peonies are grown from seed, so they have no official name, but  they are as beautiful (in my opinion, naturally) as the ones you can buy. The ones in the picture are species, P.veitchii and P.officinalis, and even though I could divide these to get more plants, I collected seeds from them, and sowed them early this autumn, and so will have more plants one day. When you grow peonies from seeds, you can never be sure what kind of flowers they will have, but sometimes you can get lucky and the offspring is even more beautiful than the parent peony:)

The only plants, which come to mind now, that I would buy next year as plants (if I find them somewhere) are blue flowering corydalis, different cultivars of Corydalis flexuosa, 'Pere David', 'China Blue', 'Blue Panda', 'Tory MP'. They are so wonderful in woodland bed! The one in the picture is 'Craighton Blue', and naturally I think that when someday I have more of different cultivars, they will perhaps produce seeds together, and so I will have my own seedlings and I could plant them all over the garden. The only way to get seeds from these corydalis, is to grow them yourself, you can't buy their seeds anywhere.

Dyeing with a mix of tooth fungi Värjäystä orakassekoituksella

Kuivattuja sieniä on onneksi aika paljon odottamassa uusia värjäyksiä:)

More vague blues, this time from mushrooms.
I had small amounts of different fresh and old tooth fungi. Not much of any one species, so I put all of them together in the same bath: couple of big Hydnellum suaveolens, two Phellodon niger, about one kilo of Hydnellum aurantiacum and a small bag of Telephora palmata - mushrooms, which all contain same kind of dye pigments.
When the concoction started to boil, I added a dash of ammonia to raise the pH to 9. I boiled the mushrooms for an hour. I had planned to add the yarn to the bath together with the mushrooms, but the bath looked so bad, that I thought that I would never get  the pieces of rotten mushrooms out of the yarn if I put them together in the same bath, so I strained the bath before adding the yarn. The Swedish mushroom dyers dye with mushrooms and yarn together, and they get darker blues that way. I will have to try it with a very small amount of yarn some time!  After straining I added more water to the bath, so that it cooled down a little, and also the pH dropped to about 8. I dyed 100g of yarn mordanted with alum and cream of tartar, for one hour, and got quite dark greenish blue. However, when I washed the yarn, a lot of dye washed out ( I am positive based on my earlier experience - which is different than that of many other dyers, for some unknown reason -, that had I lowered the pH to neutral when dyeing, the color would not have washed out so much, but I wanted to try it with high pH this time.. it works for others, so why does it not work for me.. but it doesn't.. perhaps it has to do with our water, or with some other unknown factor) and the result was pale, slightly uneven greenish blue yarn. This is a color which looks more green in sunlight and more blue in shade, it is difficult to say what the actual shade is. The afterbath gave very pale beige the next day, even raising the pH again to 9 didn't help.
These were the last of the fresh mushrooms, but I still have dried mushrooms to experiment with:)

Cool extraction of woad Morsingon viileä uutto

Hyvin mielenkiintoista luettavaa muutenkin, siihen on kerätty yhteen paljon tietoa morsingosta.

IN ENGLISH
I found out last winter that a new study had been made about woad in Finland. It was a master's thesis in Lappeenranta University of Technology, Jaakko Siitonen: The influence of extraction conditions to the yield of plant derived indigo. (There is a short abstract in English in the beginning, but otherwise it is unfortunately in Finnish).
It is very interesting reading, a lot of information about woad, and the new experiments.
In their experiments they got good results when the leaves were cut to small pieces, the extraction temperature was 40°C and the pH of the extraction liquid was low, 4. The time of extraction was 2 hours. In low pH indoxyl stabilizes and does not combine to unwanted compounds or to indigotin prematurely which would be lost with the leaves when they are strained. The low temperature saves energy.

I was going to try the low temperature extraction already in the summer, but never had the time. The first cut of woad in August was extracted with the normal hot water method, and it gave good blues. Right before the frosts came in the end of October I harvested the woad second time. The leaves had grown back really well. The first batch I extracted with hot water, and to my surprise didn't get as dark blue as I did in August (or last year from the second cut in October). Nevetherless a nice blue, 500grams of fresh leaves to 100grams of yarn. Perhaps because of the rainy autumn there weren't so much indigo precursors in the leaves.

I also tried the extraction in lower temperature. Now I had only 1 kg of leaves. I ripped them to smaller pieces (but thinking back, not small enough!), put the leaves to a glass jar and covered with hand warm water, about 40°C. I also added vinegar so that the pH was 4. I left the leaves to soak in room temperature overnight and continued the next day, after 15 hours of soaking.

IN ENGLISH
In the morning the jar looked like this, the water was yellow, but the leaves looked done. According to the study mentioned above the liquid should have looked now green (in low pH green, in neutral water the usual sherry color), so my extraction hadn't worked like it should have.

IN ENGLISH
I added washing soda to raise the pH to 9, and oxidized the extraction. Even after over ten minutes of oxidizing, the liquid was still more green than blue, so i could see, that there was not much indigotin in it.

IN ENGLISH
Also the foam was very pale, not the usual bright blue.
I added hydrosulfit and after a while dyed 100g of yarn, even after three dips the color was very pale blue, and slightly uneven, like it often is when there is not much indigo in the vat. With 1 kilo of fresh leaves harvested at the same time and  extracted in hot water, I dyed 200grams of yarn medium blue, so only 100grams of pale blue from the same amount of leaves was not good. I will try this method again next summer, and then cutting the leaves to smaller pieces, and soaking them for shorter time. It would be nice to extract also woad without boiling water and using less energy. It would also be easier, if it worked. Now my own mistakes together with the lower indigo concentration in the leaves probably caused the pale color.

First snow Ensilumi

IN ENGLISH
Today came the first snow this autumn. There would still have been things to do in the garden, but now at least all the harvesting was done, the last ones late last night:). This may not be  the permanent snow yet this winter (I hope), but it is a remainder that the growing season is over and it is time to start knitting:)
