Orakkaita Tooth fungi

In English
I have now glass jars and buckets full of tooth fungi. I have cut the mushrooms to smaller pieces and put them in the jars with water and a glug of ammonia, so that the pH is at least 8, often it is more. When the pH is high enough, the liquid turns black almost at once. If the lid of the jar is not tight enough and ammonia evaporates, the color turns brown and that is a bad sign.
I am going to take some of the jars with me to the tooth fungi dye day in Iitti October 12th
http://www.varipaletti.net/kurssit.htm (only in Finnish). I hope there will be enough participants, so that they hold the event.

Next some pictures of the tooth fungi I use for dyeing

In English
First above is the picture of Hydnellum suaveolens. You can identify it best from its strong anislike smell. Its spines are bluish when the mushrooms are young and when you cut the mushroom, its flesh is bluish, there is no orange shades.

In English
Next above is Hydnellum caeruleum, its spines are also bluish and the whole mushroom can be bluish when it is very young, but when it is older its cap is brown, like many other tooth fungi. The flesh has bluish zones, but there is also orange shades (unlike Hydnellum suaveolens), especially in the leg. Hydnellum caeruleum is most of the time also smaller than Hydnellum suaveolens.
From these two species I am hoping to get bluish shades to my yarns.

In English
Above in the same picture in the bottom is Hydnellum caeruleum, in the top right Hydnellum suaveolens and in the top left Hydnellum aurantiacum

In English
Hydnellum aurantiacum is very pretty when young, picture above, and you can identify it easily from its orange colors, but when the mushrooms become older, they are more brown (picture below) and only the flesh is still orange. It is always good to look the flesh with these mushrooms, I think it is the best identification.

Ruosteorakkaiden halkaisupinta on tummanruskeaa.
In English
In the picture above, there is Hydnellum aurantiacum on the right and the other mushrooms are Hydnellum ferrugineum. Their hats could look similar, when the mushrooms are old, but when you cut them to half, you can see the difference. Hydnellum ferrugineum flesh color is cinnamon to dark brown. In the bottom picture there are more Hydnellum ferrugineums, when young their hats can be almost white, but soon turn brown. Their flesh is very "spongy" and moist, Hydnellum aurantiacum is more fibrous, I think. There is also another very similar looking Hydnellum peckii, but it tastes very acrid, compared to Hydnellum ferrugineum which tastes just disagreeable. From these and Hydnellum aurantiacum, I expect to get green colors, even with alum mordanting. We'll see how these turn out this fall.

Englanninkielellä näistä nahkaorakkaista on hyvät sivut http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/aug2003.html
In English
I now wrote how I best identify these from another, especially I find helpful to cut the mushrooms to half and look at the color of the flesh. You can find more descriptions of these mushrooms from mushrooms books and of course for dyeing it is not so dangerious if you have wrong mushrooms, these mushrooms are not edible.
There is a good web page about these here
More about dyeing with these later. I now just try to get as much of mushrooms as possible and then I dye with them when the season is over. I store them in in jars in ammonia or they can be left in buckets to rot, it only helps the colors with these mushrooms.

In English

I got this kind of blue yarns with indian indigo last week and I am taking them to the market tomorrow. There are 500-900grams of each color. I am going to dye more blue and green yarns in the weekend and next week.

In English
Yesterday there was autumn feeling in the air, but still sun was shining and it was warm considering it is already almost end of September. I just had to go to the forest with my husband, to feel the quiet and peace, and of course to find dye mushrooms. This forest is only a couple of kilometres from our house. There were robins, so cute, they were curious to see what we were doing there, and when I was sitting still in a fallen log, northern goshawk came and sat for a moment in a spruce nearby. They are not very common to see. Perhaps it was hunting hazelhens, we saw two near the little swamp in the edge of the forest. Even little bugs couldn't spoil the feeling I get in the forest.

Then of course we found mushrooms, the two pictures below are Paxillus atrotomentosus in their typical habitat. These were new small mushrooms, we also found big and already too old mushrooms for dyeing. When they start to rot, they are no good for me. You cannot see the dark brown velvety leg of the mushrooms, until you take them to your hand. There is another quite similar and more common mushroom, Paxillus involutus, but the leg is very different and that mushrooms yields only beige colors to wool, not worth picking most of the time. I pick them only when I don't find anything else.

In English
I found also some tooth fungi, I'm always keen on finding them, because they can give me bluish colors. So now I got Hydnellum auranticum mushrooms, and one Phellodon niger, in the picture below. I almost stepped on it before I noticed it, the tooth fungi hides themselves often in the moss, so you can see only the top of the cap, that is, if your eyes are sharp enough. I am sure there were lots more, which I just didn't find. This mushroom grew near the Paxillus atrotomentosus in the lower picture. You can identify Phellodon niger best from its coal black flesh, no other tooth fungi has the same colored flesh. I like this mushroom very much, because it has given me in the past best blue colors. Well, I cannot dye much with only one mushroom, but hopefully I find more later.

Tietysti löysin myös verihelttaseitikkejä, Cortinarius semisanguineus, kuva alempana.
In EnglishAnd naturally I found Cortinarius semisanguineus, their best season is just starting.

Lasipurkkeja kasvihuoneessa Jars in the greenhouse

Siinä purkissa keskellä oleva lanka on jo aiemmin vaalean harmaalle raparperilla värjättyä vaalean keltaista. Oikeanpuoleisessa purkissa on jäkälien lisäksi hiukan kuivattua samettijalkaa.

In English

In July I did some experiments with cold dyeing in the greenhouse, mixing dyestuffs and alum premordanted yarn in big glass jars. In both jars there are reindeer lichen (Clandonia rangifera), marsh labrador tea (Rhododendron tomentosum) and some already used madder. In the left hand jar there is also a small amount of cochineal in the botton. In that jar the greenish skein in the middle was light grey yarn already dyed with rhubarb leaves.
In the jar right there is also a little dried mushrooms Paxillus atrotomentosus mixed with lichen and used madder. One small skein in that jar was mordanted with iron, rest were alum mordanted.

The first picture was taken after two hours and the second after three days. There you can see how cochineal red is spreading.

In English

In the next picture the jars had been in the greenhouse for a month, in sunshine and the temperature had been near 30C in the daytime, nights a lot lower. They looked ready then, but I didn't have time to take the yarn and wash it, until two weeks ago, so the total dyeing time was a little over two months. Lids were tight, there was no mold, but there wasn't any fermenting either.Tässä sitten punaisemman purkin langat pestynä, väri on vaaleampi, mitä olisin kuvitellut.

In English

Here are the yarns from redder jar, I have washed them now and the color is much lighter than I thought, nice though. There is only a little yellow from marsh labrador tea, I think that it would have required boiling, and the lichen color is also very weak. I should have used more cochineal and fresh madder, now I know next time. I like the rhubarb yarn, it took the colors better, the other two skeins are paler, but maybe someone will make a scarf or something out of them anyway.

In English
I am going to overdye the yarns from the other jar, only 50 grams of iron mordanted yarn took the color well, I like that one, but it is such a small skein. Next time I will use more iron mordanted yarn if I try someting like this again. Alum mordanted yarns are so pale, the red streaks in the one skein came from pieces of madder and I should have put more and fresh madder in the jar. Now I know
In English
This is an easy way to dye in the summertime, just remember to put enough dyestuffs in the jar with yarn.

Villaa sukkalangaksi Wool for sockyarn

Tiistaina selvittelin villoja, jotka sitten lähetimme Pirtin kehräämöön. Kuvissa osa villoista.
Sukkalangasta tulee aika ohutta toivottavasti kuitenkin, sellaista 3 puikoilla kudottavaa.
In English
Last tuesday I sorted out wool (some of them are in the pictures) and then we sent them to the spinnery, Pirtin kehräämö, where they will make yarn for us from this wool. White wool and the greyish/blackish wool (in the middle picture) are going to be 3-ply sockyarn, quite thin, hopefully something you can knit with 3mm needles, and I asked the spinnery to add 10% of nailon to the yarn to make it more durable. I have thought about this a lot and I am still not sure if that was a right decision, I mean to add nailon to the yarn. What do you think? All our other yarns are 100% from finnsheep, nothing added to that wool. I chose a little thicker and not so curly wool for the sockyarn, curlier wool is also finer and better for our normal yarn, suitable for scarves, hats, mittens and so on. I hope the coarser wool is also more durable.
We are also running out of our normal light beige yarn and I am now having more of that spun. Brown wool in the bottom picture is for that. It is mixed with white wool to get the beige color. I now sent 40kg of wool to the spinnery and I am expecting to get about 30kg of yarn back within a month. As you can see especially from the white wool, it is dirty, and they wash it lightly before spinning, also there is some weight loss in the spinning process, usually I get about 65-70% of yarn from the original weight of the wool.

Samettijalkavioletti Purple from Paxillus atrotomentosus

No niin, mikä pettymys!

In English
What a disappointment!
Purple yarns that I dyed on unmordanted yarn in August with mushroom Paxillus atrotomentosus didn't last at all in sunlight. They were washfast, but you can see in the picture what happened to the yarn I had in the porch, sheltered from rain but not from sun, for one week. The middle part of the yarn was covered and it kept its color, but in both ends you can see how sunlight changed the purple colors to yellowish green, they are really not so yellow as in the picture, more green, but there is a very definite color change. The first, third and fifth colors from the top were unmordanted, the other ones mordanted with alum, and the alum mordanted yarns changed only very little. The green color I get from this mushroom with iron mordant is very lightfast, I have years of experience with that, but I should have put some of that also to this test. I didn't think about that at the time.

It would be interesting to know what that purple dyestuff is chemically and why it has such a bad lightfastness, or if there is a way to improve its lightfastness. The purple skeins have kept their color inside the house, out of direct sunlight, but I am going to put them to iron afterbath to change the color to permanent green. I cannot sell colors that change like this purple. I guess this mushrooms needs more experiments if I want permanent purple from it. All tips how to do it would be appreciated.

Lauantai torilla Saturday at the market

In English
Usually I am not at the market on Saturdays, my husband is, but last week he had caught a flu and so I was at the market. Luckily so, because I met some of my blogfriends in flesh for the first time. With Pia I we changed dyeing experiences for quite a while, and also Pirkko with her friends stopped by my booth. She writes her knit blog also in English and French. It was so nice to meet you!
I met a lot of other nice people too, my best wishes to Germany and Wisconsin:)

No, katsotaan, miten tässä käy myöhemmin.

In English
Tuesday night I went looking for these mushrooms, Telephora palmata. I had found them couple of years back and I went to the same place and at first couldn't see any mushrooms. Then I smelled them! The smell is really bad and distinctive, especially with older mushrooms (the young mushrooms don't smell so bad until you are in the car with them, THEN they smell, I can tell you). And sure enough, then I saw one.. and then another.. and another. They grow in forest with old spruce, moss, and also grasses. In the same place I can find liverleaf (Hepatica nobilis) growing wild and flowering in the spring. Anyway, the mushrooms are quite small and hard to find at first, half of them is buried in the moss, you can see only the upper half of the mushroom. The ones I found now were older mushrooms, in the lower picture, they are quite dark. The first picture is an older one, taken two years ago and there you can see what they look when they are young. I didn't have camera with me now in the forest.
I now found 3kg of mushrooms and if I had dyed with them straight away, they would have given me grey, maybe with a bluish shade, even with adding ammonia to the dyebath, but after previous years experience, I did the following: I crushed them in a big glass jar, poured water and a little ammonia over them, so that the pH was 9, and closed the jar tightly. I let them sit there at least for two weeks, maybe longer, before I boil them and dye normally with premordanted fiber and hopefully get 300grams of nice light blue, not as bright as with indigo, more a little greyish, but blue nevetherless. This is how I have gotten best colors out of these mushrooms before, so let's hope it works this time also. At least the liquid in the jar looks promisingly black now.

Samettijalkakokeiluja Experiments with Paxillus atrotomentosus

Tuloksena oli purettamattoman vaalean vihreä no 5 ja alunapuretetun vihreä no 6, josta kuitenkin puuttui purettamattoman kellertävä vivahde.

I have read and heard that you can get bluish colors with mushroom Paxillus atrotomentosus, but I have never gotten them with my basic recipe. According to books I have, without mordant you can get different kinds of browns and greens, with alum mordant dark purple (Bessette, dried mushrooms ratio 6:5 to yarn) to olive grey. All books agree that with iron the color is green. No book says that you can get purple without mordants, but I have seen someone else get that. Lundmarks and Marklunds book Färga Garn med Svamp (Dye yarn with mushrooms) says that with strong dyebath (same ratio 6:5 as in Bessettes book) you can get dark grey/black when the mushrooms are boiled first for 60 minutes. If however the boiling time is 30 minutes, you can get more bluish/purplish black.

This year I have lots of mushrooms to dye with and so I decided to try to get bluish or purple colors from this mushroom. In my first experiment I crushed 6kg of fresh middleaged mushrooms, covered them with water and simmered them gently for 30 minutes. Then I strained the bath and measured the pH, it was 5-6. To the cool dyebath I added 300grams of unmordanted white yarn and 10grams of alummordanted white yarn. After 15 minutes the unmordanted yarns had a distictly purplish shade and after 30 minutes I took the yarns away from the bath, because they had started to turn more grey. I let them dry overnight outside, before I washed them next morning. The result was purplish grey (no 3) on unmordanted wool and bluish grey (no 4) on alum mordanted wool, I wouldn't call them purple or blue though.
With the afterbath I dyed 300grams of yarn green with iron mordant like I usually do.

I boiled the same mushrooms again, now vigorously for over an hour and put 100grams of unmordanted white yarn and 50 grams of alum mordanted white yarn to the bath. I let them simmer for an hour and got light yellowish green (no 5) on unmordanted yarn and more greyish green (no 6) (without the yellow shade) on alum mordanted yarn. The colors in the picture didn't come out right, they are too light. After this dyeing the bath was exhausted, its color was very translucent.

Then I did another experiment: like the first one, but when in the first one I had 2kg of fresh mushrooms to 100grams of yarn (20x weight of the fiber), I now had 3kg of fresh mushrooms to 100grams of yarn (30x weight of the fiber). I simmered the mushrooms gently for 30 minutes like before, strained the bath and put unmordanted and alum mordanted white yarn in it. They were in the bath in 80C for 30 minutes again and this time the unmordanted yarn was darker purplish (no 2) than before. The alum mordanted yarn was also darker greyish blue (no 1). The purple colors in the picture are about right, but the alum mordanted bluish colors look too grey, in reality there is a blue shade in them. Another thing you cannot see in the picture is that although I tried to rinse my alum mordanted yarns carefully prior to putting them to the dye bath, some alum must have leaked from them to the unmordanted yarns, because there were little greenish/bluish streaks in the purple yarn. I think that was where alum mordanted yarn had touched the unmordanted. Next I have to try with only unmordanted yarn.

I will now put samples of these yarns to the porch in sunlight (if sun comes out, it is cloudy and rainy now) to test the lightfastness. I will get back to that in couple of weeks.

It is always a little mystery what colors you can get from mushrooms, these were not exactly what the books said there would be. Propably the water effects the color, our water comes from our own well and we haven't tested its mineral content. Also where the mushrooms were growing, how old they were, were they fresh or dried (in Miriam Rices book it says that you get better colors from young mushrooms Paxillus atrotomentosus than from old ones and I have the same experience). And the yarn, whether it is untreated or if it is e.g. superwash-treated yarn. Anyway, I think from this experiment that how to try for purplish or bluish shades from this mushroom, you should have a lot!! of mushrooms and short boiling and dyeing times. And be prepared to disappointments, too. If you don't like the colors, you can always put the yarns to iron afterbasth for 15 minutes and get greens. I hope.

Tässä jatkoa, valonkestotesten jälkeen:
No niin, mikä pettymys!

In EnglishWhat a disappointment!

Suomenlampaasta About Finnsheep

Finnsheep Association has good web site http://www.finnsheep.fi/english/index.html .
There is a lot of information about sheep itself and also of its wool. Even though we don't have our own sheep any more, I buy wool from farms that have only pure Finnsheep, not crosses with other breeds. This way I can be sure that the wool is pure Finnsheep wool. Besides that I think Finnsheep wool is better/softer than crosswool, I want to support farmers who still have only Finnsheep. There are a lot less pure Finnsheep left in Finland than 15 years ago.

Tunnustus Nice matters Award

Värjäysorakkaitakin on luvassa.

Krappilankoja värjääntyy kasvihuoneessa edelleen, ensimmäisiä jälkivärejä en saanut kuvattua, mutta kohta pitää ottaa toiset satsit pois värjääntymästä, sitten lupaan kuvata kaikki. Hienoja värejä sieltä tulee. Sain yhden uuden mustan astiankin, joten nyt värjäyksiä on neljässä saavissa.
Ja tietysti sienivärjäyksiä on koko ajan mielessä.

I got this award from Pia, who also dyes yarn. Thanks Pia!
Right now I have so little time to read other blogs, that I don't know who to give it to, but later I am sure I will pass it along, there are so many nice blogs and people out there.

I have washed yarn, mordanted it so I can dye more and been at the market. I have also my dryer for plants (what might be the correct word for it in English?) full of mushrooms drying for later use, I think I am like a little squirrel collecting nuts (in this case, mushrooms) for the winter. Exept that my friends collect most of them for me, but anyway I am so happy that when the mushroom season is over (at least for more than a month left of it, if we are lucky, two months) I will have enough until the next fall.

I have still madder yarns in the green house, now 4 big pots full of yarn (I got a new big black pot last week), all becoming beautifully red, some afterbaths also more orange. I will post pictures of them later when I get them all washed and dry, maybe next week. And of course mushroom colors:)

Tekemättömiä värjäyksiä Plants I should have dyed with

Puutarha on täynnä kasveja, joita olisi pitänyt ehtiä kerätä väripataan: puitten lehtiä, rikkaruohoja ja kasveja kukkapenkeistä. Nytkin padassa on kokenillilankoja tulossa lisää, kukat saavat jäädä edelleen.
Yksi, jolla minun piti tänä kesänä värjätä, on luonnonvarainen kultapiisku, Solidago virgaurea, jota meillä kasvaa pientareiden lisäksi kukkapenkissä.

My garden is full of flowers that I was going to use for dyeing (not to mention tree leaves and weeds), now their flowering is over and it is too late for some of them. This year I mean, perennials are so good because they come up every year. Right now there is cochineal again in the pot and flower dyeing must still wait.
One flower I was going to dye with was Goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea) which grows in the wild here, but I also have it in my flowerbeds, where it becomes much bigger and flowers more than on the roadsides. I have heard somewhere that the dye content is smaller when plants grow in good soil rather than in poor dry soil, but plants are so much easier to pick from flowerbed and they are bigger, so maybe that makes it up a little bit. The picture of it is in the upper picture, but also all the yellow in the lower picture are goldenrod (hmm, there seems to be also one tansy in the lower picture). In the spring I was going to dig it up, but then I thought that I will let it flower and use it in the dyepot... I never had time. This is so typical of me, I think I can do much more than I really have time to. But anyway, I like it and there is always next year. And in September another kind of Goldenrod flowers here, Solidago canadensis, so maybe I will then have time to use that.
Other flowers in the picture, that I was going to use (and they are still flowering, so it is not totally late) are black mulleins (Verbascum nigrum 'Album'). I have dyed with them last year and they give good warm yellow with alum, which is quite lightfast also, mulleins contain luteolin as their dyestuff. The trouble, with these is that, they look so good when flowering, I have hard time cutting them to the dyepot. And after flowering, they don't give so much color any more. Luckily, they seed around, maybe too much, but I can always use extra seedlings in the dyepot.
In the picture there are also blue Nepeta transcaucasica and red phlox, which I haven't tried for dyeing, but in the left corner in the bottom of the picture there is another dyeplant, red leaved creeping oxalis (Oxalis corniculata). I have once dyed with it and got purplish blue, but that color faded quite soon. Every year I have been meaning to try with it again and maybe get better fast color from it, but... It also seeds itself so much, I will have it available every year, I won't propably never get rid of it even if I wanted.
