This past week I have harvested my japanese indigo and dyed with the harvested leaves. Luckily we have not had night frosts yet. I have not done any experiments with them now, but dyed as usual, to being sure that I will get enough blues for the kits to last for the whole winter. If the weather stays warm, I try to have time to try fructose fermentation with my last japanese indigoes, and hope it works.
It is easy to understand how red mushrooms or red roots give red dye bath and then dye yarn red, and the same is easy with yellows, but even after having dyed a lot with indigo-bearing plants, every time it is such a wonder to get good and fast blue from ordinary looking green leaves. And every time there is a small excitement: is there enough blue in these plants this summer, and did my extraction succeed this time. Then to see the liquid turn blue, what a rush. It is such a joy to get blue from my own plants.
Tässä nyt kuvasarja väritattaresta lehdistä siniseen lankaan. Haluan näyttää miten jännittävää tämä on!
Ensin lehdet riivitään varsista, ja laitetaan lämpimään veteen uuttumaan.
Täällä olen kirjoittanut tarkemmin uutosta.
IN ENGLISH
Here are pictures from leaves of japanese indigo to blue yarn. I want to try to show you how exciting this is!
First the leaves are stripped from the stems and put to soak in warm water. I have written here more about the extraction.
IN ENGLISH
After the extraction the leaves look done, and I pour the liquid to a bucket. The colorless precursors of indigo are now in the extraction liquid.
Olin mitannut kidesoodan etukäteen ämpäriin, jotta pH nousee heti kun liemi valuu siivilän läpi ämpärin pohjalle. Jos kasveihin on kesän aikana kertynyt indigon esiasteita ja uutto on onnistunut, nyt värittömät esiasteet (indoxyl) alkavat yhdistyä hapen vaikutuksesta siniseksi indigotiiniksi. Korkeammassa pH:ssa yhdistyminen nopeutuu eikä esiasteita mene hukkaan.
IN ENGLISH
I had measured washing soda beforehand to the bucket, so that the pH of the liquid raises immediately when it runs through the sieve and hits the bottom of the bucket. If the plants have formed enough precursors during summer and the extraction was successful, now the colorless precursors (called indoxyl) start to combine to blue indigotin with the help of oxygen in the air. In higher pH the formation of indigotin accelerates. You can see how the liquid turns more blue when the amount of indigotin increases while I induce more oxygen to the liquid by pouring it back and forth.
Heti hapettamisen alussa liemen väri on jo muuttunut vihertäväksi.
Already in the beginning of oxydizing the color of the liquid has turned green.
Ylläoleva kuva on minutin hapetuksen jälkeen.
The picture above is after one minute of oxydizing.
Tässä kahden minutin jälkeen.
This one is after two minutes.
Here after four minutes the liquid is already quite dark blueish green.
Tässä lähikuva edellisestä, liemi on minusta todella kauniin väristä.
Here is a close-up of the previous picture, I think the liquid looks so incredibly beautiful.
This is after 11 minutes of oxydation, the liquid is very dark blue and ready.
Helpoiten happi poistetaan natriumditioniitti- nimisellä kemikaalilla, mitä on mm tahranpoistoaineissa.

Now the precursors from the plants have been transformed to blue indigotin. Too bad the indigotin in this form is not suitable for dyeing, but it has to be changed to so called leuco-indigo so that it can attach to the fibers and dye them permanently blue. This happens by removing the oxygen from the liquid. It sounds confusing, first introduce oxygen and the remove it, but this is how it goes. Easiest way to remove oxygen is to use chemical called sodium hydrosulfite which is in color removers.
Liemen pH pitää olla n 9. Lämmitän liemen noin 50 asteiseksi ja lisään liemeen natriumditioniittia poistamaan hapen liemestä.
IN ENGLISH
The pH should be around 9. I heat the liquid to 50°C and add sodium hydrosulfite to remove the oxygen.
Vajaan tunnin kuluttua liemen pinnalla on violetti kuparinhohtoinen kalvo ja sen alla liemi on kellanvihreää.
Liemi on valmista lankoja varten.
IN ENGLISH
After one hour there is a coppery sheen on top of the liquid and underneath the liquid is greenish yellow. Now it is ready for dyeing.
Langat ovat liemessä olleessaan kellanvihreitä, pidän niitä siellä 10-15 minuttia. Eli nyt indigon leukomuoto on imeytynyt lankoihin ja kun langat nostetaan ilmaan, leukomuoto alkaa ilman hapen vaikutuksesta muuttua takaisin siniseen liukenemattomaan muotoonsa, ja langoista tulee pysyvästi sinisiä.
IN ENGLISH
When the yarn is immersed in the liquid, it is yellowish green. Now the leuco-form of indigotin has attached to the fibers. When the yarn is taken out into the air, oxygen in the air slowly turns the indigotin to it's blue insoluble form, and the yarn is permanently dyed blue.
I squeeze carefully the yarn to remove the excess liquid, and then swing it in the air to help oxygen to get to every part of the skein.
IN ENGLISH
Yarn needs to oxydize in the air for at least the same amount of time as it was immersed in the dye bath to be sure that all the indigotin is back to it's insoluble form. After oxydizing the yarn can be immersed again to the dye bath to deepen the blue.
To finish off I wash the yarns, and after drying they are now waiting to be re-skeined for kits or to sell otherwise.
