New book Uusi kirja

In English
My Christmas strated early again this year. I got a very nice dye-related present: Jenny Dean's latest book about natural dyeing, Colours from Nature. Of course I had to start reading it straght away, I just couldn't save it until after Christmas:)
It is 100 pages all writing, there are pictures of only color samples, so I think it is a very solid package of anything you need to know about natural dyeing, and best of all, it all comes from her own experiences. It is a good book for a beginner, but also I found new things from it. I recommend it, and you can order it straight from her here. She also keeps a blog about natural dyeing, a must-read for any natural dyer!

Color from spruce cones Kuusenkäpyväriä

In English
There are recipes in Finnish dye litterature about dyeing with spruce (Picea abies) cones, in Terttu Hassis book from 1977 and Alina Hellens book from 1919. The cones should be old, at least one year, and boiling them for several hours and using alum as mordant they should give reddish yellow mat color. I haven't seen spruce cones mentioned in other dye litterature, and I couldn't find out what the dyestuff would be.
Alla olevassa kuvassa valkonen lanka on vierellä vertailuna.

In English
Last winter I collected a bucketful of spruce cones (2kilos) from under a big old spruce near us. I suspected that the cones were not old enough and s0 I thought to let them age more before dyeing with them. Well, all things got in the way and it wasn't until spring when I got around to cutting them up and putting them to water to soak. Cutting wasn't so easy, the core of the cone was very hard. In the summer I put the soaking cones to the greenhouse, where it was warmer, and added some woodash lye to the bucket, hoping that maybe the high pH would help releasing the dye.
Summer went... and autumn.. and finally in November I took the soaking cones and started to boil them. The liquid was then nice reddish brown and after simmering for several hours in two days, the liquid had turned to dark reddish brown. The pH was neutral at this point.
I strained the bath and added 120grams of white premordanted wool (alum and CtT) and simmered them for three hours, then let them cool in the dyebath overnight. The bath was still very dark color, but the yarns were much lighter color, which became even lighter after washing:( The final color is kind of nice light shining beige, but beige nevetherless. With good imagination you can see some reddish in it. It is a disappointment to me, like most of the colors from woods have been. The baths are very dark and sometimes reddish, but I can't get that color to attach to the yarn.
In the picture below there is also a natural white for comparison.
The time these cones had been soaking was long enough :-), and I even poured now the used dyebath back over the cones and let them soak even more. Maybe I'll try again after Christmas.
I have read from Sandra Rudes' web pages that dyes from woods would be better extracted with alcohol. Covering this much cones with even rubbing alcohol would be expensive, but perhaps I could eperiment with a smaller amount:)

Blue scarf Sininen huivi

In English
I have knitted this kind of long scarves for Christmas, 39 sts, needles no 3mm and the cable in the middle is 6 sts wide (this is so simple design, that I am sure it has been used already ages ago, so it is not my design). I had a little natural grey self-striped yarn, the stripes were made already in spinning, mixing white and black sheep wool, so that the color changed from light grey to darker grey. I have dyed this yarn with indigo, so that the color is now greyish blue, very nice to my eye:) I have some skeins of this yarn now in my shop and from 150 gram skein I made a scarf 160cm long.

New mittens Uudet lapaset

Lapasten nimi on Palloesikko.

In English
It is still many months before spring comes, but I can think of flowers even when knitting:)
Here are my mothers new mittens, and there are also kits for them in my shop.
The on on the right is called Bellflowers, I think of summer meadows when looking at them, or harebells (Campanula rotundifolia) growing by little roads. The blue in the flowers is dyed with japanese indigo and green with mushroom Tapinella atrotomentosa.
The inspiration for the other mittens has been Drumstick primroses (Primula denticulata) that are growing in the garden, they are one of the first primroses that flower in the spring. There are two greens, both dyed with mushroom Tapinella atrotomentosa and the color of the flowers is dyed with cochineal. The name of these mittens is just Primroses.

If you want to get your order outside Europe before Christmas in Economy mail, they have to be sent at the latest Monday Dec 1st and I recommend the same to Europe, even though Finnish mail says that Dec 8th is the last day to send mail to Europe in Economy mail.

Sheep wool Lampaan villaa

Villan hienous on 54, villakiharoita on 3 cm matkalla keskimäärin 6-7.

In English
The shearing of the sheep is now over for this autumn, and we have gotten finnsheep wool from our friends. I have sorted out some of the wool to be sold for spinners.

This wool is lustrous, soft, curly and clean from all vegetable matter. It is about 7-9cm (little over 3 inches) and there are good distinct and tapering staples. It's fineness is about 25-26 micron, there are 6-7 wool crimps in 3 cm (little over 1 inch). The wool above is straight from the sheep, so there is a lot of lanolin in the wool, and the smell of sheep.
I washed gently part of the wool, so there is quite not so much of lanolin in that wool and the fibres stuck together a little.
I have now all these wools in my shop.

Myös ruskeaa villaa on pieni määrä. Villan tapuleiden kärjet ovat haalistuneet auringossa kesän aikana (niinkuin hiuksetkin tekevät), myös villan värissä on eroja.

In English
Here is natural brown Finnsheep wool. The color in the tips of the staples has faded from dark brown to light beige during summer (sheepwool does this like your hair in sun). There are different shades also in the darker brown.

I have new mittens almost ready, so I think there will be two new kits in the shop next week-end:)

Uudet lapaset ovat loppusuoralla, ensi viikonloppuna on varmaan kaupassa kaksi uutta pakettia:)

Seven facts about me Seitsemän seikkaa minusta

Helen had tagged me yesterday, I am very flattered, I really am:-), but awards and this kind of things are very difficult for me, because I read regularly very few other blogs, and nominating seven more is impossible for me. When I have time I do read blogs occasionally, especially knitting blogs through Ravelry and some dyeblogs. I hope there were be more blogs about natural dyeing, now the ones I read are the ones Helen had already tagged. I know there are thousands of wonderful blogs in the world, perhaps I will find time to read them sometime.

So now I'll just write seven things about me, I hope you are not very mad at me for breaking the chain.

1. In high school I always knitted in class:)
2. I was an exchange student in 1973-74 living in Constantine, Michigan, United States.
3. I have worked as an animal keeper in Helsinki Zoo for 13 years.
4. I am very nervous about performing in public or teaching class, that's why I don't do those things and why I like this blogging thing:)
5. Spring is my favourite time of year, early morning in the forest or by the lake watching the birds.. I have a little hermit in me.
6. My favourite hobby is growing plants: perennials and even trees and roses from seed. To get them to germinate, imagining how they are going to look and see them grow is so very satisfying... but that is also why my garden is a mess and never tidy! I am a plant collector and not a gardener. Last summer I counted 764 different perennial plants, shrub roses and other different species in my garden, most of which I have grown from seed or cutting or exchanged with other plant collectors, and some are still very small, like the two year old rhododendrons I have grown from seed. I'm looking forward to the time when they are big and besides being wonderful evergreen shrubs, they can be used for dyeing:)

7. I am an optimist:) I try to find the good things in everything.
When growing plants this is a necessity: this year there are really a lot of moles in the garden, but instead of thinking of eaten plants in the spring, I hope the tawny owl living near us has now enough moles to eat to grow baby owls like couple of years back. It was such an experience to see and hear the babies beg for food from their parents at nights in June.

Eilen Helen oli merkinnyt minut "tag"illa. Olen oikeasti hyvin kiitollinen huomionosoituksista, mutta tällaiset palkinnot ovat niin hankalia minulle, kun en lue säännöllisesti monia blogeja:( Tagin antaminen eteenpäin on minulle mahdotonta, vaikka ihania blogeja olisi varmasti nettiavaruudessa vaikka kuinka paljon. Ehkä minulla on joskus aikaa lukea niitä enemmän.

Pöllönpoikasten seuraaminen alkukesän koivikossa on jotain tosi ihanaa!

Memories of late summer Loppukesän värjäysmuistoja

In English
Canadian goldenrods (Solidago canadensis) are mentioned in dye litterature to be a good source of yellow color. Goldenrods have been used for dyeing even in Europe since the end of 1800th century and their dyeing properties and cultivation has been studied in Germany and France in the end of 1990s. Some of the dyestuffs in goldenrods are quercetin and most importantly isoquercitrin, which according to Cardon is one of the most lightfast yellow dyestuff besides luteolin. Besides goldenrod quercitrin is found in black oak bark, leaves of mulberry (Morus alba) and in heathers (Calluna vulgaris). Quercetin, which is found in many common plants, is not so good when it comes to lightfastness.

Alempi kuva on otettu äitini puutarhasta lokakuun toisella viikolla.

In English
In my garden I have old goldenrod that I have gotten from my mother. I am not sure if it is canadian goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) or giant goldenrod (Solidago gigantea). It is a very late bloomer, it's flowers open here in the beginning of October and it is very tall, about my height (1,70m). It doesn't set seeds but it spreads from root and if you have planted it somewhere it is there forever:) It is a beautiful late autumn bloomer which doesn't mind small frosts. The picture below is from my mother's garden in the second week of October.

In English
I used flowertops and about third of the stem (where there was more leaves) of this goldenrod for dyeing. I cut them to small pieces, poured boiling water over them and left to ferment. I was busy with something else and so they were in my porch fermenting for more than a week. During that time the liquid had turned to nice yellow, but I simmered the plants for one hour nevetherless. I used 700 grams of fresh flowertops for 100 grams of yarn and got nice bright yellows to yarn that I had premordanted with alum and cream of tartar. The same bath gave also paler yellow in the afterbath. In the picture below the color in the middle was dyed on natural grey yarn which makes the color seem green, even though it really is the same yellow as in the yarn on the right (mordant alum and cream of tartar). The yarn on the left was then overdyed with indigo which gave beautiful green.

I think that with many plants, especially those that give yellow, it is useful to let the bath ferment. They seem to yield more color that way. And besides, then you can do the dyeing when you have the best time:)Korkean myöhäisen piiskuni lisäksi minulla on vuosi sitten ostettua matalaa kanadanpiiskuristeymää.

In English
Besides my old late goldenrod, I have one shorter canadian goldenrod hybrid, which I had bought year ago. I flowered already in the beginning of August and last summer I didn't have heart to cut it for dyeing. I had thought to divide it next spring, but when I now looked at all the seeds it had produced, I am sure there is no need to divide it. If all those seeds germinate in my flowerbeds, uh, I'm not sure if I am happy or not. So next year I am sure to cut the flowers of that goldenrod for dyeing:)

In English
This autumn I have also dyed with my different asters, and they gave me same kind of yellows as goldenrods. I haven't found any information about the dyestuffs they contain:(
I have an old small-flowered old aster (Aster x salignus). It spreads so much that most gardeners wouldn't like it, but what would be better for a dyeplant:) I like it a lot, it grows just about anywhere and butterflies favor it, like the other redder aster I have (bottom picture).

In English
Last week was a cold week even here in south of Finland, no snow yet but freezing days. Thursday we went to look if we could find the last tooth fungi or polypores in places where we had found them previously. Even at noon the grasses in the little swamp were still frosty.

Suppilovahverotkin olivat aivan jäisiä.

Even delicious (but not very good for dyeing) Cantharellus tubaeformis mushrooms were frozen.

Jatkoimme eläinten tekemää polkua pitkin ylemmäs sammaleiseen rinteeseen, josta löytyi lisää kohmeisia suppiksia. Käpytikka nakutteli ja pieni tiaisparvi pyrähti männyissä, muuten loppusyksyinen metsä on hiljainen. Korppipariskunta kuuli varmaan äänemme ja ilmestyi ronkkuen yläpuolelle kääntyen hetken kuluttua taas pois, taisimme olla vaarattomia:)

In English
We followed a small path made by animals of the forest: deer, moose or foxes, and found more frozen Cantharellus growing in the moss. Forest in the late autumn is quiet, a lone Great Spotted Woodpecker made some noises and a small flock of tits (mostly Great Tits) was trying to find food from the pines. A pair of ravens propably heard our quiet voices and came checking out who was disturbing their forest. They flew over us talking to eack other and then turned away, hopefully thinking we were harmless:)

In English
Near the big old pine in the picture above we found last year dyer's polypores (Phaeolus schweinitzii), but there were none this year. Only one small left unnoticed last year, and now it was so old and partly decayed that moss had grown on top of it, picture below.
Even though other parts of Finland got a lot of rain last summer, here it was pretty dry, only in August it rained, so that some mushrooms popped up in September, but I quess that was not enough for these polypores or tooth fungi either, we had not found them hardly at all this year.
Yksinäinen vanha kantokääpä sai myös jäädä keräämättä.

In English
A lone Red Banded Polypore (Fomitopsis pinicola) was so old that there wasn't any red visible any more. This is a good polypore for making paper, but I didn't collect it now.

In English
In Finland mushroom season for dye mushrooms is really short, only a month ( September), two at best. I envy the mushroom dyers in northern west coast of the US or Canada where the season is still going, and it seems that it is a lot longer there, but of course now I can dye with dried mushrooms and knit:) And I can pick polypores or tooth funghi as long as there is no snow, actually they keep getting better when they are frozen and old. Maybe I still find some.

Autumn Oak Mittens Syystammi-lapaset

In English
I knitted mittens with the yarns I had dyed with mushroom Pisolithus arhizus. I tried first couple of other basic colors for these mittens, but ended up frogging them and made a pair with natural sheep black as a basic color, I think that is so good with almost any naturally dyed color.)
These mittens are called Autum Oak- mittens, because I think the color is just like autumn color in leaves of oaks in my garden.
I had enough of these yarns to make a limited number of kits which are now available in my shop.

Ranskassa B & T World Seeds myy monenlaisia indigokasvien siemeniä.

In English
The flowers of my Japanese indigo (Persicaria/Polygonum tinctoria) still look like this, I doubt that I get my own seeds from them even though I have it growing inside the house now.
Some places that sell Japanese indigo seeds are:
In UK Wildcolours sells seeds of some dye plants and also Japanese indigo
In France B & T World Seeds sell seeds of many kinds of indigo-bearing plants
I had heard also of a German company which sells Japanese indigo seeds, but I couldn't find the name right now.
I don't know right now any sources for japanes indigo seeds in the US or Canada, but if someone knows any seed companies there that sell them, please tell:)

Pictures of my japanese indigo dyeings Väritatarvärjäyskuvia

Now I have dyed with all the japanese indigo that I have grown this year.
This has been very unusual autumn weatherwise, the first frost came already in the beginning of September, but it was only one night. It seemed to kill my japanese indigoes which grew outside, but when the weather became warmer (+10C) again, some plants started to grow again and I got more leaves from them a month later before the second frosty night came. Since then it has been no frosts and it is almost November now. Next week the weather forecast has predicted snow, so now I have cut also the rest of the plants from my greenhouse.
From the plants that grew outside I got only one big crop of leaves and some smaller leaves later, but the plants that grew inside the greenhouse (or is polytunnel better word?) grew two big crops. First was cut in the end of July and the second was ready in the end of September, two months later. We had a very cloudy and cool summer, so I am sure that in a warmer summer, I would have gotten even better crop.
I grew total of 62 plants and dyed with them about 7,5kilos of yarn (average of over 100grams from one plant). Some yarns were quite dark blue, most medium or light blue.

Most of the time I dyed with traditonal way, which I described in an earlier posting, here, but I also did some direct dyeing with vinegar. The latter is more time consuming so that is why I did less that way:(
In my big glass jar I could put about 800grams of fresh leaves at a time, I heated them to 70C in two hours and most of the time I also left them until next morning before I used them.
There are so many mysterious things about dyeing with fresh leaves of japanese indigo and so many things to experiment, for instance it seemed to me that when the liquid was paler, also the yarns were not so dark. And when it was darker like in the picture below, also the yarns were darker, but this is just how it feels, I could be wrong and the darker outcome would be a result of some other factor. Ah, luckily there is always next summer.. and summers after that, or maybe I find all the answers from someone else's experience in books or in the internet:)
I also tried if I could get more blue pigment from a second decoction of the same leaves, but no, most of the blue is in the first jar. Instead of more blue, I got nice strong yellow on alum mordanted yarn when I dyed the normal way with used japanese indigo leaves which I had simmered (I think boiling is bad for the yellow, too) for a while. I also tested the lightfastness of that yellow for a month outside and it didn't fade at all. of course there wasn't so much sun, but I think some other yellows (like onion skins) would have shown signs of fading in that time.
I used these yellow for greens when I overdyed them with blue japanese indigo.

In August when I dyed first time, I got a lot of blue foam when I oxidized the bath, and couple of times later, too, but sometimes there was hardly any foam even though the color was very dark and I got dark blue in the yarns. Why there is sometimes more foam than other times I don't know, but I could get good colors without much foam.

Syyskuussa halusin värjätä isomman erän samaa sinistä. Koska en tiennyt olisinko voinut hauduttaa lehtiä suoraan isossa kattilassa ilman vesihaudetta???, tein useamman haudutuksen lasipurkissa peräkkäisinä päivänä, yhdistin liemet isoon pataan ja jatkoin kuten tavallisesti.

In September I wanted to dye a bigger amount of the same blue and as I didn't know if I could heat the fresh leaves in a big kettle without the double boiler thing???, I did it in the glass jar like before, three times in consecutive days, combined the liquids and added washing soda and sodium hydrosulfite, but increased the amounts in proportion to the liquid. I expected to get the same colors as before but for some reason the yarns were very pale, even after three dipping and oxidizing, the picture below. I still can't understand why the bath didn't dye like before!!

Even more peculiar is what happened a week later. I had saved the bath and was going to use it as a base to indian indigo powder. I had already made the stock solution in a small separate jar, and I then heated the old japanese indigo bath, added some sodium hydrosulfite to it and when I looked at the bath half an hour later (before adding new indigo to it), it looked so yellow and right that I decided to try to dye with it some skeins, why not, I could always redye them later. And what do you know, they turned out good blue, much darker than the yarns week before!! Picture of these yarns is below.
Somehow the indigo wasn't ready when I dyed the first time (even though I think I did everything right) and during that week something had happened to it.
