This is exciting for me and my little indigo patch. I've always just worked from the fresh leaves but this method will allow me to save dried leaves for later use.

I also had some red tips on the plants this summer. For once we had great sun and hot weather but that made it difficult to keep the plants watered sufficiently. They hate to dry out! I think they could have used more fertilizer too. Also they started flowering the earliest ever (mid-August). Probably another sign that the plants were stressed. The good news is now I have lots of seeds to try again next year! Red tips in the leaves is a sign that the plant has some problems, perhaps it has not enough nutrients, or had been too dry or too wet, something like that. When grown in pot it might be a good idea to fertilize it more. I have read that the plants with red tips don't have so much indigo in them, but it has happened to me, too, and it is still worth to dye with them. They can give paler blue, but still blue:) The leaves turn blue when bruised only when there is a lot of indigo in the leaves so if there is only some indigo it may not show when bruised.
Toivottavasti tästä minunkin kokeilustani on apua jollekin muulle:)
