I checked and they used magnetic stirrer in the lab. In the field tests they didn't stir at all.

Avoiding oxygen during the extraction is my idea, I have gotten better blues when air is excluded during (hot) extraction, but I remember reading about it also somewhere, don't remember now just where. But I don't know exactly how significant it is, and I have gotten blue also when extracting in a pot open to air. There are so many variables in the extraction of woad.
To me japanese indigo seems simpler to extract than woad, because it always gives good blues in low temperatures.Leenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14266878515009058403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-18715517739311870532012-11-12T00:52:49.765+03:002012-11-12T00:52:49.765+03:00Thanks Leena for the fuller explanation. I wonder if they used a magnetic stirrer in the lab but were unable to 'in the field' and so introduced oxygen at too early a stage? I'm not sure of the sense of what I've said, but you indicated that the cooler method must avoid oxygen.

Robinhttp://www.robinparis.co.uknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-51829584067627708392012-11-11T16:37:37.676+03:002012-11-11T16:37:37.676+03:00Hi Tari, it's good to hear (though not good fo...Hi Tari, it's good to hear (though not good for you) that you got also pale color with this method. Strained the woad out added washing soda to PH 9 and poured back and forth. The foam was blue so I poured some more. When it looked ready added spectralite and waited about an hour. I think the dye bath had cooled off so I placed the jar in hot water from the faucet. waited until it looked yellow and then added 2 ozs. of roving. I got a pale blue too! Not much dye in the plants probably because we have had some cold mornings here around 25 degrees F. Picked all my weld and will be dyeing some roving tomorrow. I will over dye some roving I dyed earlier with japanese indigo(last of the dye bath too. Hope to get a light green, I will tie the roving in places to maybe get a tye-dye effect.Tarihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15815092852995853872noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-54741644487283870392012-11-09T11:04:36.617+03:002012-11-09T11:04:36.617+03:00Jaakko, kiitos kommentista, työstäsi on oikein pal...Jaakko, kiitos kommentista, työstäsi on oikein paljon hyötyä, kiitos:) Suomen ulkopuolellakin siitä oltaisiin oikein kiinnostuneita.

The best results were in 80°C for 30 minutes, but nearly the same results were in 40°C in low pH, IF the leaves were cut and the extraction stirred. The stirring was only done in laboratory tests, and not in field tests, where the results were not so high as in laboratory tests in low temperature. In water with neutral pH, and with whole leaves the results in 40°C were poor, while in 80°C it was much better even with whole leaves and neutral pH.
I should have tried stirring the leaves during the extraction, but it should be done carefully not to induce oxygen to the extraction, perhaps not very easy to do.

On the other hand I would like to get as much indigo from my own woad (and japanese indigo) as possible (because I need a lot of blue), so then the hot method is best, but on the other hand it would save energy and be easier for me if cooler water could be used. That's why I found this study interesting that they had found out things which may make the cool extraction also possible:)Leenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14266878515009058403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-20553287541118943322012-11-05T02:11:31.437+03:002012-11-05T02:11:31.437+03:00This is really interesting to read about, thanks. ...This is really interesting to read about, thanks. I looked too at the abstract to the research. It mentions a higher temperature was beneficial... I wouldn't have thought of 40C as a high temperature!
Also it mentions stirring - perhaps leaving them overnight wasn't enough stirring? I have processed my last crop of the year (unless good weather) but will try it next year.
Robinhttp://www.robinparis.co.uknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-73237822065986832122012-11-04T20:09:30.339+03:002012-11-04T20:09:30.339+03:00Thank you for the comments:)
