Sitä paitsi kokeileminen on uskomattoman jännittävää puuhaa, vaikka lopputulos ei aina olisikaan odotetun kaltainen :)Ahmunoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-32873202566128904452009-08-20T15:34:23.552+03:002009-08-20T15:34:23.552+03:00It´s very interesting to read your blog post and a...It´s very interesting to read your blog post and all the comments.Next year i`ll try do do the same.schoenefarbenhttp://schoenefarben.de/blog/blog.htmlnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-82542491709550924402009-08-14T16:03:00.334+03:002009-08-14T16:03:00.334+03:00Helen, I'm not sure if cooling fast is necessa...Helen, I'm not sure if cooling fast is necessary, I did it and it seemed to work for me, but I think woad really behaves differently in different plances and for different people. As you said, this is the charm and curse of natural dyes:)Leenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14266878515009058403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-47761620200807258542009-08-14T00:17:49.449+03:002009-08-14T00:17:49.449+03:00Hi Leena I am really ashamed I had not noticed I h...Hi Leena I am really ashamed I had not noticed I had shortened the extraction time since I wrote the book -I must have tried it and found it worked and gone on using it.Now I will have to re-edit my book. I haven't tried cooling the woad bath either so must have ago at that too. Always something still to learn that is why I like natural dyeing so much.:)Helenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05597640040480685246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-35859848395078322692009-08-13T15:21:41.107+03:002009-08-13T15:21:41.107+03:00Thanks Claire and Kati for the comments.
Claire, ...Thanks Claire and Kati for the comments.
Claire, I'm glad you liked the yarns when you saw them "live" at the market. I'll have more yarns in the online shop after the market season is over in September, now most of the yarns I dye go straight to the market (and usually don't last there long):)

Helen, thank you:)
In your book the extraction time was 30 minutes and that didn't work for me (I have tried now three times with 30, 40 and 50 minutes). For some reason I get the best colors from short (10min)and hot (90-95C) extraction with as short cooling time as possible, every time I have done it, so that is what works for me. I don't know why the longer extractions don't work as they seem to work for so many others. Perhaps it is our water or something else:)

Hei Ahmu!

Kaikenlaiset kokeilut on aina kivoja, hyvää jatkoa värjäyksillesi.Leenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14266878515009058403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-52782332260942647852009-08-12T23:37:00.342+03:002009-08-12T23:37:00.342+03:00Hi Leena the recipe in my book works for me evry t...Hi Leena the recipe in my book works for me evry time. I pour nearly boiling water over the torn leaves, leave for 10 minutes.
Strain the leaves. The colour is a dark sherry. I add washing soda till it goes dark green . I beat with a whisk till the foam goes blue- add 1/2-1 tsp of thiourea dioxide and leave After 10 minute or so I have a vat. I keep the temperature at 50 degrees C.
The turquoise cast to the colour is due to a low pH .Helenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05597640040480685246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-54515925470302288142009-08-11T21:53:36.394+03:002009-08-11T21:53:36.394+03:00Hei!

Onko sinulla kokemusta asiasta?Ahmunoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-15506169171918627062009-08-09T16:30:49.438+03:002009-08-09T16:30:49.438+03:00Beautiful shades of blue!Beautiful shades of blue!Katinoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-1127803761306113942009-08-08T23:17:56.556+03:002009-08-08T23:17:56.556+03:00Hello - I met your husband and your lovely yarn at...Hello - I met your husband and your lovely yarn at the Helsinki markets last weekend. I really regretted not buying some at the time, but your husband gave me a business card and I looked up your blog & shop when I got home. I just wanted to say how lovely your yarn is, and how interesting I am finding your blog - very educational! I look forward to reading more and hopefully acquiring some of your yarn. Thanks!Clarehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04636616202892758909noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-64372069415109427052009-08-05T14:49:10.950+03:002009-08-05T14:49:10.950+03:00Thanks Chris and Fiberfinger:)
I am very glad to h...Thanks Chris and Fiberfinger:)
I am very glad to hear comments and improvements on my woad dyeing from people more experienced with it than me!

Chris, I think my expectations were too high and the colors I finally got are really nice:)
I didn't first understand that you leave the leaves in the bath for 20 min AFTER you remove them from the heat, so the total extraction time should be closer to 30 minustes or something like that, right?

I washed the leaves twice and shredded them with hands except in no 5 I did it with scissors and no 2 left them whole.
I dumped all the leaves to hot water at the same time, as I was afraid that the first leaves would be there too long, but I quess that worry was unnecessary. Because I had a lot of leaves at the same time, it took also long for the bath to heat up again, especially as I had washed the leaves with cold water and it left the leaves really cold. I should have done the washing with warm water.

I also think you were right, that I had stopped the oxidizing too early (even after 15 minutes), I should learn to look and understand the foam better.
I'll just have to practice:)

Thank you for all the advice I have gotten from everyone, I'll keep on practicing and you'll see the results later:)
Hopefully after this summer I know better woad and some of it's secrets.Leenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14266878515009058403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-17839344828827780042009-08-04T13:11:28.690+03:002009-08-04T13:11:28.690+03:00Hei Leena,

Maria the fibrefingerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14050427929898271631noreply@blogger.com
