A Finnish friend got dark brown from the same walnuts with only a week's soak and then boiling them vigorously for three hours. And her yarn was commercial superwash yarn, which always soaks up the dye better than my yarn. But I think I'm going to try prolonged boiling, too.Leenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14266878515009058403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-9443235872652058782011-07-22T20:37:11.520+03:002011-07-22T20:37:11.520+03:00Hi Leena

I will try and hunt the reference up. Like you I have had pale coffees but I have also had rich browns in the past.Helenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05597640040480685246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-14276320533909003652011-07-22T13:05:26.800+03:002011-07-22T13:05:26.800+03:00Thanks, I didn't know that black walnut conta...Thanks, I didn't know that black walnut contained more juglone in it's roots than other walnuts.
We have about four hectares of land and I can plant them near the forest, so my actual garden is safe.:) And I hope the juglone keeps also hares and deer away from it.Leenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14266878515009058403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-17093798109201382712011-07-21T15:09:05.628+03:002011-07-21T15:09:05.628+03:00Just FYI, you might want to not plant a black waln...Just FYI, you might want to not plant a black walnut in your garden as they have an excessive level of juglone in the roots that impedes the growth of other plants under and around them (roots can extend 3-4 times the size of the canopy). I've seen one large walnut poison an entire field. You have such a beautiful garden, wouldn't want to see anything happen to it. Other walnuts are fine though. :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-55009398800461528222011-07-20T07:59:26.967+03:002011-07-20T07:59:26.967+03:00Thanks Neki for the encouragement, my husks are so...Thanks Neki for the encouragement, my husks are soaking again:)Leenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14266878515009058403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-39476520450252543822011-07-19T13:04:38.052+03:002011-07-19T13:04:38.052+03:00oops! i meant a bag :)oops! i meant a bag :)neki desuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02780249422205001288noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-66513765873766871852011-07-19T13:02:50.142+03:002011-07-19T13:02:50.142+03:00agreed it's good to plant a tree for the futur...agreed it's good to plant a tree for the future.
i have dyed using green walnut husks.
put them in a bad in water and put some silk skeins in the tub. some weeks later i remembered and took them out. lovely browns! same with wool, although the color came out a bit less rich.
still have the bag in the tub and add water periodically.the husks keep giving out color.neki desuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02780249422205001288noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-52943095903633764472011-07-19T08:24:30.509+03:002011-07-19T08:24:30.509+03:00Thanks Louisa. Butternut and Juglans mandshurica are more hardy, although quite rare in Finland, so that's why I'm so happy about all my small walnut trees.Leenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14266878515009058403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-24784208128718484042011-07-18T18:30:57.057+03:002011-07-18T18:30:57.057+03:00The tree you weren't sure about is a black wal...The tree you weren't sure about is a black walnut, I think. My 15-20 metre tall backyard tree is a Juglans regia, aka common, Persian or English walnut. The leaves are more rounded and have a much larger terminal leaf - more like your butternut.

I don't think the hulls work as well after they are dried. If I want to store them before I'm ready to soak them, I put them in the freezer, nuts and all. These are the culls, the only ones the evil squirrels leave for me!

The colours I get are tans to browns but not as dark as chocolate, even with iron modifier. Probably the black walnut is more intense but I've never tried it.Louisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11685532773952211627noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-66563022499087323192011-07-18T17:20:43.643+03:002011-07-18T17:20:43.643+03:00Thanks Ladka, so it isn't the species but some...Thanks Ladka, so it isn't the species but something else, because these husks are the same, except I have bought them dried.
