But, I am so much enjoying my learning about the natural dyes and trying the processes.

This post is very good because it expresses in such a gentle way, the frusration we feel in finding a simploe trusted recipe.

Thank you for your list of books. I shall write down the titles and try to acquire these.

My daughters are also intersted in natural dyes, and whatever I learn, I pass on immediately to them, and so I am pleased about that. They are ecologically mindsed.

Thanks again.

Oh and ps. I am Finn. My father immigrated to Canada when he was 5 years old. I think I will have to buy Trudy van Stralens book, I don't have it and many people recommend it. Sometimes it feels I use more dyestuffs than others, but it was really good to hear someone else does it too!
When I read old recipes from Cardon's book, many of the 1800 century dyers/recipes combine different dyestuffs or overdye several times, and reading your comment confirms my thoughts about it. It is just these little exchanges of experiences and thoughts that can give so much!! Thank you!

I think for me reading in Böhmer's book about lightfastness of different plants was an eye-opener: different plants yield different dyestuffs which are not equal in fastness, and how much mordant can also affect (copper for yellow dyes, eventhough I don't use it). And without natural dyes discussion group I would never have found Böhmer at the first place. (Otherwise Böhmer was not in my list, because of the price of the book). So it is all thanks to internet!Leenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14266878515009058403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-68443680577375279052011-01-17T18:03:23.226+02:002011-01-17T18:03:23.226+02:00well written, i think you are absolutely right. i&...well written, i think you are absolutely right. i've done just about everything wrong, and once in a while the wrong thing worked right. working for a commercial dyer for a while (trudy van stralen) really changed my thinking, two things stood out: less mordant, more dyestuff, and the beauty of yarns from exhaust/overdye baths. those ideas were, for me, revolutionary.

Thanks Ladka, it's ok for you to post it, even though I think that I couldn't get to words everything I wanted to say, thoughts just go around in my head:)Leenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14266878515009058403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-64149371846172988112011-01-17T13:57:04.308+02:002011-01-17T13:57:04.308+02:00Thank you for posting your ideas about natural dye...Thank you for posting your ideas about natural dyeing.

Thanks Diane, I hadn't thought about the chemical makeup changing, but it feels logical now that you mentined it. I like to read old recipes in Cardon's book and try to translate them to modern ones in my mind. This is one of the things I love about natural dyeing, being able to feel part of history so close. Then on the other hand I have to try to be efficient, because I do this for living. Wild Color is on my own favourite list!

Louisa, you are so right that there are so many variables that standardizing recipes is difficult if impossible, that is why I sometimes hesitate to write about my recipes.. what if they don'ät work for someone else.. but on the other hand they might help someone with the same problems. Thinking about this subject started when a person wanting to start dyeing professionally, contacted me last fall, and asked lot of questions, and I remembered how difficult it was in the beginning for me.Leenahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14266878515009058403noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-13153329872940157592011-01-17T03:53:39.684+02:002011-01-17T03:53:39.684+02:00I agree with your views, Leena. I think natural dyeing is kind of like cooking - science and art at once. It makes it difficult to standardise recipes due to so many variables in water, mordants, plants, growth, harvest, storage etc. Not to mention variables in the dyers themselves! That's probably why each dyer has developed her own techniques and an individual colour palette resulting from them. But it's wonderful to share ideas!Louisahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11685532773952211627noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-74992377754997154952011-01-16T21:51:01.209+02:002011-01-16T21:51:01.209+02:00Olen aina ihaillut sitä miten avoimesti jaat osaam...Olen aina ihaillut sitä miten avoimesti jaat osaamistasi. I look at a lot of the old and new dye books and one can often see where something has been copied from a source without determining if it is accurate. I also think the chemical make ups of some of the products have changed over time such as alum so % aren't always accurate as the chemical is actually different. I agree with your book list. I also refer to Dalbys' book for cellulose. As Jenny Deans' Wild Color book has been reissued, would that be considered new?Dianehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13647173776442767888noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-61281477665548849362011-01-16T11:40:24.879+02:002011-01-16T11:40:24.879+02:00Kiitos kommenteista.

Isicle, you said it better than I. That is just what I was after!

Thanks Helen, that is just how I feel about dye books. I am fortunate that I can read English, and that I don't have to rely only on Finnish litterature. And your blog is one where I have learned a lot and gotten new ideas and thoughts! Piahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14983926275988272994noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9129357734481422196.post-1247928702729084262011-01-16T02:07:55.580+02:002011-01-16T02:07:55.580+02:00Well said.
