Spring work Kevätpuuhia

Yllä olevassa kuvassa on viime viikolla itäneitä taimia. Nämä on kylvetty kaksi vuotta vanhoista siemenistä, joita olin säilyttänyt kuivina pakastimessa, pakattuna tiiviiseen muovipussiin.

Spring is advancing fast. I had sown japanese indigo inside in end of March. Plants in the picture below were sown from last years fresh seeds, and they germinated in about one week. It was still too cold outside and inside there was too warm and too little light and so the seedlings grew long stems, but it doesn't matter, because now that I prick them apart to own pots, I can plant them a little deeper.
The plants in the picture above were sown from two years old seeds, which I had kept dry in ziplog bag in the freezer. They germinated well, but germination took twice as long as that of fresh seeds.
If kept in room temperature I doubt that they would have germinated.
The other seedlings in the picture below are thyme seedlings (for eating), also waiting to be pricked out.

Punarinta on seurannut kevätpuuhia ja tullut kasvihuoneeseen sisällekin.

Robin is following me in the garden, it has come even inside my greenhouse.

The frost has melted from the ground and I have been able to begin work in the garden. I've grown japanese indigo in raised beds  in front of the greenhouse, and there are also beds behind it, but there has been a problem that soil doesn't stay in the bed but rolls down to the paths. So last week my husband started to build  wooden edges to my japanese indigo bed, and it will keep the soil where it should be:). Here are pictures from the start, I'm so happy!

When I took these pictures I hadn't yet cleared the japanese indigo plants from last year to compost, but yesterday I did it. I prepared one of the beds and sowed woad also yesterday. Usually I had grown woad first inside, and then planted them outside when they are bigger, but as woad can stand night frosts and I had weed free good bed for them, I'm going to try it this way this year. It rained last night, and it is still raining, so the seeds will get a good start. We can still have freezing night temperatures until late May, so I have to grow japanese indigo bigger in the heated green house before planting them out. Woad is easier in northern climates, but I like japanese indigo so much, that I grow it more than woad.

  2. I sowed indigo rather late this year, for various reasons. Can I expect any selfseeded plants in the garden where indigo grew last week?

    1. Hi Ladka, sorry about not answering earlier. I think you may have selfseeded plants because your climate is warmer than here. I know that japanese indigo self seeds in the east coast of the US, and once I have had couple of self seeded plants in my own greenhouse, too. That was after a very warm summer.

  3. your climate is similar to mine, and now that i am thinking "greenhouse" i really appreciate your garden photos that include yours.

    1. Hi Velma, having a greenhouse is great, it makes growing season much longer and spring comes earlier when you can do things in there even when it is cold outside:)
