Dyer's Year 2014 Värjärin vuosi 2014

IN ENGLISH
Here is a summary about my year 2014. The pictures above and the last picture of this posting tell the main things where my time went,  but  interesting things also happened in between.

Värikasvien kasvattaminen on minusta tosi mielenkiintoista, kasveihin saa jotenkin erilaisen tuntuman, kun niitä seuraa alusta pitäen ja vuodesta toiseen.

IN ENGLISH
I love growing plants and when you grow the dye plants from the beginning you get a different feel for them and colors which they give.

IN ENGLISH
Last summer was so hot that solar dyeing and indigo fermentation dyeing succeeded.

Yksi viime kesän minulle uusista jutuista oli käyttämällä piiskuista saadut punertavat värit. Tätä täytyy kokeilla enemmän, muutenkin käymisvärjäys ja tanniinivärit kiehtovat mieltäni.

IN ENGLISH
One of the new things for me last year was the reddish colors from goldenrods which I got with fermentation dyeing. There is still much to experiment about tannin dyes.

IN ENGLISH
Mushroom season was not good this year, summer was too hot and autumn too dry, but many dye plants enjoyed hot weather. Japanese indigo is my favourite dye plant and I will continue to grow it this year, with woad, another indigo bearing plant. If I choose only one plant to grow it would be japanese indigo, besides the blue color it gives, there is still things for me to learn about it and indigo dyeing.

IN ENGLISH
The market takes all my time from May until September,  in the winter I hope I will be able to knit enough for the summer. After today my husband will be at the market only on Saturdays until spring.

IN ENGLISH
It is cold and snow outside, but the sales were good at the market also last week-end and today.

    Jakamasi tieto on todella kullanarvoista.

    1. Kiitos paljon Saila, monesti tuntuu itsestänikin samalta, tunnit eivät riitä kaikkeen mitä haluaisi ja pitäisikin tehdä. Ja välillä on pakko rentoutua puutarhan kanssa:)

  2. I love your pictures of the little plants, and your dye jars. My dye experiments have been with plants I find in the woods and fields, but I planted coreopsis this Autumn, and hope to plant more in the Spring for homegrown dye plants.
The snowy woods in your picture look very much like what I see here today :)

    1. Quinn, thank you:) I, too, get many colors from wild plants, and blue is the most important color for me, it sells best, so I must grow it. Coreopsis is a very good dye plant, one of the best! The plants from madder family are for experimentation, I couldn't grow enough of them for my own use.

  3. Me too! I'd grow Japanese indigo just to keep the seeds viable for when I need new plants. They don't keep. Your market looks very cold in winter! We have a Winter Market here too but mostly food stuffs and not really very cold most of the time.

Quinn, coreopsis is my favourite dye plant for yellow, gold, rust and oranges. So easy to grow.

Happy New Year from west coast Canada, Leena!

    1. Happy New Year to you, too.
That is one of the reasons why also I have to grow japanese indigo every year, besides I need so much blues. Every year when I get new seeds from it I'm happy, because in my climate it is not given that they have enough time to flower even though I take the flowers inside where the seeds can ripen. I have found out that if I keep the seeds in the fridge they stay viable for two years but no more, and if they are kept in room temperature they lose viability in one year.
You are right, it was cold at them market, but we had a heater inside our booth:) Between New Year and Epiphany, there are quite a lot of tourists in Helsinki, so that is why it is a good time to sell, but after Epiphany the tourists disappear.

We'll see how this year goes, it now feels like the market it taking more and more time and I suspect I don't have time for new experiments, but you never know when the inspiration hits:)

  6. Your dye year is like a diary. Interestings to see a record of the passing seasons. The photos of the growing plants are nice to see when everything is covered in snow. Thank you.

Growing and then using dye plants is very rewarding, another dimension of working with nature, as well as using what nature provides. Dyeing with indigo bearing plants never ceases to amaze. The process still seems a bit like magic, plus the results are beautiful. Japanese Indigo, Woad, Coreopsis, Madder and Weld are my favorite dye plants to grow. So many other great sources of dye as well. Japanese Indigo is a challenge to grow in the cool Canadian foothills, but worth the effort - always a few pots in the sunniest, most sheltered spot on my deck.

Great to hear your market stall is busy.

    Looking forward to spring.

Best wishes (and abundant harvests) for 2015!
    Trevor

    1. Thank you Trevor!
I have the same favorite dye plants as you do, and how I get blue from my own plants is a wonder each time, and there always seems to be new things for me to learn about blue dyeing.
Also here it is cold and snow right now, and looking at pictures from summer makes me feel that spring is a little closer.
I wish you also a good year 2015.
