Last summer my japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria, syn Polygonum tinctorum) grew well, and I got quite a good crop of leaves (though I noticed that the plants growing in part shade produced less blue than the ones growing in full sun). The first plants started to flower early in the greenhouse, but because of all other things making me so busy I forgot them, and when I cut the flowering stems to take inside later in the autumn, some seeds fell to the ground, they were so ripe. So I guess there will be germinating japanese indigo in the soil of my greenhouse in the spring:)
I didn't get very much seeds from the plants which grew outside, even though I took the flowering stems inside before the frosts,  but anyway I got enough for myself for this year, and a few packets  extra which will be now for sale in my web shop along with some woad seeds. I have tested the germination of these seeds and 90% germinated within 10 days in room temperature. The first seeds started to germinate even after one week.

In Finland you can't get japanese indigo seeds from any commercial seller, but from Germany you can buy them from Ruhlemann's, in UK from Saith Ffynnon Wildlife Plants and Wildcolours , and in the USA Companion Plants. I'm sure there are also other places who sell seeds of  japanese indigo.
I do have enough seeds now for myself for this year, but if anyone knows a source which sells japanese indigo seeds straight from Japan, I would love to  buy seeds which are original from Japan, so can you please let me know:)

Väritatarten kukkia ulkona syyskuussa, alemmassa kuvassa tulossa juuri kukkaan ja pian tämän jälkeen tulikin sitten ensimmäinen kunnon halla syyskuun viimeisellä viikolla, eli ulkona väritatar ei ehdi kypsyttää siemeniään täällä Suomessa.

Japanese indigo flowers from plants growing outside, in the picture below they are only just starting to flower and soon after that came the first severe frosts in the last week of September, so there is no chance of them ripening the seeds outside here in Finland.

I took this last photo because the same variety of japanese indigo produced both pink and white flowers. These plants were grown from a variety called 'Senbon' which has pointed leaves, and also my other pointed leaf variety produces both colored flowers (though more pink than white),  but the round leaf variety only pink flowers.

  1. I think my plants are Senbon also but I'm not sure. This past year they actually produced seeds in the garden as well as on my windowsill. But that could be because I never harvested them for dye since I was away for August and September. So they had a full season to grow undisturbed. They were also in a different place in the garden. You just never know, do you? So many variables!

  2. Hi Louisa,
I have grown japanese indigo now for six years, and it feels like I have just scratched the surface, there is so much to know, and every season is different from the other and there are so many variables to growing and dyeing with them. Here I get either one leaf crop or seeds, but there is not enough time for both.. and most years not enough time for flowering and seeds anyway, so it is better to harvest the leaves for dye:)
