Genista tinctoria

(Cardon)

IN ENGLISH
Two years ago in the spring I sowed seeds of Dyer's Broom (Dyer's Greenweed), Genista tinctoria. It is an old dyeplant, and silk fabrics have been identified from 14th  century Florence dyed with it (Cardon). Large amounts of it's seeds and other remains have been found in archeological  sites in York (9th century). So there is a lot of history in this plant for a dyer, and it is exciting to grow it:)
It grows wild in Europe and it is also cultivated for dyeing. in the 17th century it was considered one of the five most fast yellows.
In Finland Dyer's Broom can be  grown in sunny spot in dry sandy soil in south of Finland (zones I-III).

Dyer's Broom contains the same yellow dyestuffs as weld and sawwort, luteolin and apigenin. It also contains genistein (Cardon)

IN ENGLISH
Last year my plants were still quite small (I had planted them in a poor sandy soil, so that they would survive the winters better here), so I didn't harvest them last year. Dyebooks say that the best time to harvest them is when they are flowering. This summer they flowered in the end of July, but I didn't have time to try them then. Now in the beginning of October I though that I should harvest them before the frosts come, and to my surprise there were new flowerbuds opening. Pictures below were taken now in October.

IN ENGLISH
I harvested a big bucketful of branches, I cut them about 20cm above the ground. We'll see how they  start to grow in the spring. I left couple of plants alone to have a comparaison nest year.
Only after cutting the branches I noticed seedpods in them, result of the flowering in the summer. The pods were still green and as they were about the same size as the leaves, they were difficult to see.

IN ENGLISH
I stripped the leaves from the twigs, but that was propably unnecessary. Also because this was the first time I dyed with these I wanted to play safe and soaked the leaves for two days in water where I had added some washing soda so the pH of the soaking water was about 8. Maybe also unnecessary but it worked:)

IN ENGLISH
I gently simmered the soaked leaves, strained the bath and added cold water. pH had now dropped to little over 7, so it was almost neutral. I had 800grams of leaves and I thought that, hmm, with similar amount of goldenrods I could dye little over 100grams in the first strong bath.  I added one skein (100g) alum.cream of tartar mordanted yarn to the bath, and it turned immediately strong golden yellow, so I quickly added another skein to the bath, too. An hour in 70-80°C and they were strong golden yellow (bottom skein in the picture). I dyed another two skeins in the same bath and they became also nice yellow (the middle color), not so golden as the first ones, but more like what I get with weld, lemon yellow. There was still enough color in the bath to dye one skein paler yellow.
I was really surprised to see how much I could get from these leaves! 800grams of leaves and 500grams of good yellow yarn, especially the first strong yellow was really good.
I don't know what I was thinking when I threw the used bath away, although I should have let it ferment for couple of weeks still. I am sure I would have gotten more color from the bath still.

Autumn Syksy

Syksyisiä kuvia puutarhasta eilen.

Pictures of autumn in the garden from yesterday.

Vielä vähän kukkiakin..

Still some flowers..

Vaikka kasvit alkavakin lakastua.

Even though most plants are starting to die.

Viime viikonlopun hallayö kävi puraisemassa väritattaria.

Last week-end we had the first mild frost which turned the leaves of japanese indgo blue/black.

Morsinko on kuitenkin voimissaan, pitää kerätä yksi sato vielä. Alla olevassa kuvassa on jännä tapaus: morsingon kukkavarteen on kehittynyt uusia lehtitupsaita, enpä ole tällaista ennen nähnyt.

Woad is still fine, I get one more harvest from them. In the picture below there is a funny phenomenon: it is a woad plant which flowered and after flowering it grew new leaves along the flower stalk. I have never seen it behaving like this before.

Väritattarella värjättyjä lankoja kuivumassa, verihelttapunaista kattilassa ja pensasväriherneen lehdet odottavat kiehumaan pääsemistä.

Blue yarns dyed with japanese indigo are drying in the line, Cortinarius red is simmering and leaves of Genista tinctoria are soaking before I simmer them.

My dahlia and coreopsis flowers are looking already pretty sad after the cold night.

Near my garden in the forest I saw some false puffballs (Scleroderma sp), young ones and some old, already "exploaded" ones. There were only few of them so I left them to grow and only took the photos.

IN ENGLISH
Last summer I tried a second time to solar dye with mushroom Cortinarius semisanguineus, in my greenhouse. I put dried mushrooms and mordanted yarn (alum and cream of tartar) in a big glass jar, 70% of dried mushrooms to the weight of the fiber. I would have used even more, but there wasn't any room in the jar for more mushrooms. I also put the caps of the mushrooms to the other side of the jar and the stems to the other side, hoping to get more yellow from the stems and more red from the caps to different parts of the yarn.  The jar was in the sun in July and early August for two weeks,  and and the temperature in the jar was around 30°C in the daytime and less at nights. I got color like I wanted:), but not as strong as what I get in normal hot bath (60°C or more).

Yllä verihelttaseitikin tuoreita lakkeja ja alakuvassa jalkoja

Above fresh caps of Cortinarius semisanguineus and below stems of the same mushrooms.

Tällaista tästä kokeilusta tuli, vertailuksi kuumassa yhtä aikaa värjättynä tulisi tällaista.
Eli lämpötilalla on aika paljon vaikutusta, eikä pidempi värjäysaika kompensoi näillä alempaa lämpötilaa, niinkuin vaikka krapilla värjätessä.

This is what I got now, here is what I get when I dye with these mushrooms in a hot bath.
So temperature does matter, and longer time in the bath didn't compensate the lower dyeing temperature with these mushrooms like it does when dyeing with madder. On the other hand this way I didn't have to use electricity:)

Mushroom yellow Kangastattikeltaista

IN ENGLISH
We have been picking a lot of  Cortinarius mushrooms, and one time in the forest I picked also some Suillus variegatus . These were old specimen. In the picture the two on the right are these mushrooms, the smaller on the left is Cortinarius semisanguineus. The picture is nice, but not very informative:)

I had 1,5kg of fresh mushrooms, and and crushed them and boiled for about one hour, then let the bath cool down. You have to strain the bath of these mushrooms through a very fine sieve or cloth. In spite of straining there were some very fine pieces of gills in the final bath, and I think it was because of them that the yarn became slightly semisolid, not bad though. The color is not bright yellow, but rather muted yellow, but I like it anyway.
And the ratio for this color was 1,5kg of Suillus variegatus/ 100g yarn pre-mordanted with alum and cerem of tartar.

Knitting around the world

Tänään tuli postissa upea kirja. Lela Nargi: Knitting around the world, A multistranded history of a time-honored tradition.
Kyse on asenteesta.

IN ENGLISH
Today I recieved in mail a fantastic book. Lela Nargi: Knitting around the world, A multistranded history of a time-homored tradition. Thick book, fabulous pictures, stories about history of knitting in different countries, together also contemporary knitting, and even descriptions of techniques and patterns.
From Finland there are 14 pages, of which two are of Riihivilla and  of Finnsheep and it's wool. Finnsheep is part of Finnish knitting tradition, and it is so great that Finnsheep wool is so valued abroad. I just wish it would be as valued here where it comes from. We have sheep in Finland, but a lot of wool goes to waste when it is not sheared in time when it is clean. It is the attitude which should change towards our own heritage wool. I hope that the interest abroad towards Finnsheep wool, will affect its status here, too.
In this book Tuulia Salmela, a Finnish designer, says that until recently knitting was considered here as "grandmother's pasttime", and I feel that the attitude towards our own heritage wool is also same, it was considered old-fashioned and something inferior. Luckily the attitude is changing in Finland, both towards knitting and towards Finnsheep wool.

I have not had time to read 260 pages of this book yet, but  I look forward to reading it slowly and with thought and savour. My first impression is really positive, the book radiates history in pictures and in writing, but yet is in this moment. I already think I will find the roots for my knitting from this book.

IN ENGLISH
This has been a really good mushroom year, and I even found some Hapalopilus nidulans/rutilans polypores in the forest near us. It is a small annual polypore, which at the beginning is yellowish, but changes to beige or cinnamon color when it gets older. It really is small, and before my first own find, I always searched  among too big polypores, not realising how small it is. Hapalopilus nidulans is 2-10cm (1-4 inches) wide, but mostly they are about 5cm, the size of the tip of my thumb or slightly bigger. It is always a good find for a dyer, because they give fast purple colors:)

Lahoilla koivuilla on monena vuonna pesinyt pikkutikka.

IN ENGLISH
The polypores I now found, grew al in decaying and fallen Bird Cherries (Prunus padus), but it can grow also on rowans and birches. This forest was near a lake, and there grew mostly decidous trees, and in the spring the floor of the woods was covered with wild wood anemones (Anemone nemorosa). Someone could call it tangle, but I like it, and in the early summer Nightingales and Blackcaps nest there. Also Lesser Spotted Woodpecker has made it's nest hole in old birches there.

Okrakäävät piiloutuvat hyvin pudonneiden koivunlehtien joukkoon.

Hapalopilus nidulans is not easy to find among fallen birch leaves, they are so similar in color.
