Last week was the perfect autumn weather for outdoor work and mushroom hunting, and I was in bed most of the week, in fever and flu:( Now I am better, but I still have to take it easy, so that the flu doesn't come back.
Before getting sick, I had harvested blue from the garden, dyed blue and also yellow on top of the green trying to get a color I dyed last year.. with no luck. It is even more difficult to get the same shade with a color that is dyed combining two different colors, as both need to be the same, and the ligher the color is, the more impossible it is for me.

I wanted to get that green because Mascha from Germany, who a year ago made the Bloom-mittens, had again made the most beautiful mittens called Danish Mittens from the yarns she had bought from me last winter. Congratulations Mascha! She has made instructions for these mittens and you can get it for free in Ravelry. Her name is there Mascha2 and the pattern is in the library as Danish Mittens. I think within two weeks I'll have a selection of yarns available in my shop also for these mittens.. but the green will be slightly different:)

New mushroom dye book Uusi sienivärjäyskirja

Mukana on minulle uusia väriseiniä, jännittävää.

Suosittelen!

About a week ago I heard that a new Swedish book about mushroom dyeing was published and I ordered it right away. The name of the book is Färgsvampar & svampfärgning (Dye mushrooms and mushroom dyeing), and the authors are Hjördis Lundmark and Hans Marklund, very experienced Swedish mushroom dyers. I have waited for their book for a long time and it was worth the wait: almost 300 pages, of which 185 pages of different dye mushrooms and the colors they give. There are about 100 different dye mushrooms, among about 20 different polypores and 20 different Cortinarius mushrooms! And new dye mushrooms for me, also, exciting:)

Besides mushrooms growing in Scandinavia, the book presents dye mushrooms from Europe (4), North America (3) and Australia (8), but many Scandinavian mushrooms grow also in Europe and North America.

Of every dye mushroom there are good identification pictures and text, and also what is the main dyestuff in each mushroom (if known, there is still many unidentified dyestuffs). In the pictures of dyesamples there is a lot of information in simple numbers and symbols: the ratio between dried mushrooms and fiber, the pH of the dyebath, if it is the first or second dyebath, what the mordant was used and what I think is the greatest is that from every dyesample a lightfastnesstest has been made and in the picture there is the number which indicates the lightfastness. This is very valuable information, now you don't have to try everything out yourself and perhaps see later that the color changed! The dyesamples had been kept in sun for 10-12 weeks and compared to the official 'blåskaleprover' (I don't know what that word is in English) which had been in the same conditions, and thus gotten the lightfastness values from 1-6. For every dye mushroom there is also a symbol which indicates if it is not so good dye mushroom (T), good dye mushroom (TT) or very good dye mushroom (TTT) and the lightfastness was one big criteria to this asessment.

There are pages about dyeprocess and about the things which affect the dyeresult and mordanting. Hjördis premordants only with alum (20%) and cream of tartar (15%), and has gotten the whole rainbow of colors, also greens and blues with lightfastnessvalues 3 and 4. There are also some samples without any mordanting.

In the end of the book there mushrooms are listed by the color they give and also lists according to the lightfastness. Here I had hoped for also latin names of the mushrooms besides Swedish names, I know them better by latin name as I think many non-swedish speaking do:)
Luckily there are latin names in the main mushroom pages.

You can get this book only from the author, Hjördis Lundmark, her homepage is here.
The price of the book was 330 Swedish kronor (33 eur) and shipping to Finland was 150 kronor (15 eur). Within EU the paying is easy to bank account, but you can ask if Hjördis could take also Paypal. I hope this book gets to be translated to Finnish sometime.. and also English, it is really worth it, but even without knowing how to read Swedish, there are a lot of information in the pictures and symbols and numbers, which are easy to understand. I notice now that the page which I photographed had less pictures than many other pages, so perhaps it wasn't the best choice to show, but there are overall more pictures than text in the book.
This is a good book for a beginner in mushroom dyeing as well as for an experienced mushroom dyer so I can really recommend it.

Harvest with our cat Sadonkorjuuta kissan kanssa

We haven't had any frosty nights yet, but any time now they could come. I have been busy harvesting my dyeplants, mainly japanese indigo, which is very tender and dies if temperature gets too low. The yield is very good this year, from one plant I get about 300grams of leaves, which dye almost the same amount of yarn blue. From the plants which grow in the greenhouse, I got one harvest already in early August, and more is still growing inside, but most plants are outside and I haven't had time to harvest them until now.. which is ok, since I get more leaves now:) I'll write later more about extracting the blue from them, but here are some pictures about what happened day before yesterday.

I was ripping the leaves from the stems of japanese indigo, when our other cat came to look what I was doing. She is also 18 years old (like her white brother Maukka), and though she can't hear anything any more, she can see and smell well still... she even catches occasional moles from the garden.

Ensin pöydän reunalle ja sitten vähän lähemmäs lehtipinoa...

First she is sitting near the edge of the table and then moves closer to the pile of indigos...
Hmm... mitäs täällä tuoksuu...
Mmm, what is that smell...
Jotain täällä on...
There is something here...

Haa..... löytyi!
Haa... got it!

In English
Yam, it was a one leave from catmint (Nepeta cataria) which had grown in the japanese indigo bed (as a weed), and I had accidentally cut it with the indigos. How amazing that she smelled it, it was in the bottom of the pile, and I hadn't noticed it at all while cutting the indigos:)

Thread of Life- mittens Elämänlanka-lapaset

Tein lapaset uusilla väreillä tarvikepakettia varten.
Mallin on meille 1993 muokannut Mervi Kanninen vanhojen perinnekuvioiden pohjalta.

I knitted new mittens and they are now available as a kit with yarn and instruction.
Mervi Kanninen has modified this pattern for us in 1993 from traditional Finnish pattern, with white, burgundy, pink and greens it is called Rosegarden and now when I got new nice colors, I decided to use this pattern again. The name of these mittens is Thread of Life, bright, muted and dark colors all together:)
The base color is natural black and pattern colors are dyed with madder, mushroom Cortinarius semisanguineus, japanese indigo combined with tansy and madder again but mordanted only with alder bark.

The busiest day at the market Kiireisin päivä torilla

Renee sanoi osuvasti saapuessaan paikalle muiden kanssa: "the vultures have arrived":).

Yesterday was the busiest day at the market, luckily DH was there with me, I couldn't have done without him. I knew in advance that Craft Cruisers had a Knitting Cruise with mostly knitters from the US and Canada and they were coming to Helsinki for one day yesterday.
I had dyed yarn and prepared mitten kits for them all August and I am SO pleased that they liked our booth and things.
We had camera with us at the market, but neither of us had no time to take pictures of our booth filled with knitters.. and afterwards it wouldn't look worth taking pictures:)
The first knitter was already waiting for us when we arrived at the market in the morning (so she had the best where to choose from) and a little later Renee came with others saying aptly: " the vultures have arrived":)
It was so absolutely nice to meet people, some of you I "knew" from Ravelry, and some others, I'm afraid I forgot many names already.. so many people, all at the same time, but it was a real pleasure to meet you all! And also a dyer among the knitters, Linda, had I known you were coming, I had brought you some mushrooms!
Special thanks to Melissa, thank you!!
And Nancy , it was so wonderful to meet you, thank you.
You all really made my day, thank you, thank you, thank you!
I hope your day in Helsinki was as good and memorable as mine was.
