Woad Morsinkoa

In English
Woad is flowering here right now, and my new plants for this year are growing nicely. Finally I planted my japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) outside last week - this year early summer has been so cold, that I have kept the plants in the greenhouse until now. We even had frost night before June 8th, luckily not so much in my garden as in many other places, but my woad leaves turned little red around the edges because of that. Now they are growing again, so they were not damaged badly. Japanese indigo is much more vulnerable to cold, it stops growing if it is too cold and if the temperature gets even close to freezing, it may die.
My Coreopsis tinctoria and Cosmos suphureus are growing also (no flowers yet), but for some unknown reason weld didn't geminate at all:( I waited for a month and then I planted woad in the weld bed, as there was now room. It was too bad, but I still have goldenrod and tansy for this year, and small Genista tinctoria plants growing to give yellow in the future years.

In the beginning of month I attended a seminar on woad in Jokioinen. That was very interesting, and one of the best things was to meet other like-minded people, dyers and sheep enthusiasts.
In the lunch table I learned that other dyers had gotten blue from the second year leaves from woad, and one difference to my dyeing was that they used shorter extraction time, even 10 minutes was enough, in fact if the time grows longer, some of the extracted indigo may start to disintegrate and you have less indigo to use after all. Another new thing to me was that you need to wash the woad leaves many times, before extraction. The more washings the better. Washing apparently reduces the impurities in the woad leaves and the color becomes better, it could also help release more indigo (this I am not quite sure, I didn't write it down).
There was also a very good lecture about the history of woad, especially in Finland, by Hannele Köngäs.

There is a lot of research planned about growing and processing woad in Finland, and I hope in the future I could get all the blue color from here. There is also going to be a study about the impurities in woad and if they differ from the ones in woad grown in southern Europe, and how they affect the color.

The participants of the seminar got a packet of woad seeds, these come from a strain grown here in Finland but they originally came from Europe ten years ago. As I didn't have any more empty place where to sow them, I gave the seeds to a friend of mine, who has a farm and grows vegetables organically. He sowed the seeds and I get leaves from him in the autumn:) I hope they grow well and so he decides to grow more dyeplants next year, he has machinery to grow them in a field and a bigger farm than we do.

In the seminar I also bought Anna Vuorema's paper Reduction and Analysis Methods of Indigo, it is a lot of chemistry, but perhaps when I have time to read it, I understand even some of it:) It is also found online, here.

  2. Thank you so much Leena- that is very interesting and I shall try washing my woad leaves before extraction.I have never done that.
How wonderful to ahve a conference on woad- I had no idea Finland was growing woad commercially.

  3. Hi Ladka and Helen:)
There is not commercial growing of woad in Finland yet, but they are trying to promote it here, because it can grow here. The problem has been how to get it extracted and dried in the farms, they are now developing machinery.

I have read about the washing, but I didn't know it was so important and they stressed that several times is much better than only once. I have to try it, too:)

  6. Thanks Fleur and Neki, I hope you find some help from my blog, although I have no experience with fermentation woad vats so I can't help with that. I think it is too cold here, but I would like to try it, too.

  7. Thanks for leaving a comment:)
Your woad pages are really good, I have read them many times, and your experiments are really valuable to a new woad dyer like me, especially as you grow them in a similar climate.

  8. Hei tarvitseekohan siemenet jotain kylmäkäsittelyä tms? Morsinko nimittäin kukkii ja siemenet alkavat tipahdella, keräsin niitä talteen ja pohdin josko niistä ensi kesänä lisää tätä ihanaa tavaraa...
