Cold dyeing with madder Krapin kylmävärjäys

Olen saanut paljon mukavaa palautetta toissaviikon Puutarhaunelmien ohjelmasta, kiitos:)
Varsinkin krapin kylmävärjäys on kiinnostanut monia ja ajattelin lyhyesti kerrata, miten olen tehnyt sen.
Täällä on pidempää juttua toissavuotisista kylmävärjäyksistä, ja linkkejä, mistä olen onkinut tietoa.

Nyt on sitten jo ajatuksissa morsinko, huomenna on Jokioisilla MTT:n järjestämä morsinkoseminaari, jonne olen menossa kuuntelemaan, mitä uutta on suunnitteilla morsingon tutkimuksessa.

In English

I have gotten a lot of positive feedback about the gardening programme in Finnish television where there was a small section filmed in my garden last summer about natural dyeing. I have gotten questions about cold dyeing with madder which was shown in tv and so here is shortly how I do it. Here you can read more about my experiments with it in 2007 and there are also links to the online sources where I found information.

1. Wash the yarns and then premordant them with alum (10-12%) and cream of tartar (4-5%). CoT is not necessary, actually you might get redder color without it.
2. Let the yarns cool in the mordanting bath overnight (at least) and then rinse them with warm water to get rid of any possibly unattached mordant.
3. Use the same amount of madder as yarn, by weight, and soak the madder overnight in water. You need more plant material for cold dyeing than when you use hot dyeing.
4. Fill your cold dyeing pot with hand warm water and add the soaked madder to it.
5. Add you wet premordanted and rinsed yarns to the pot and move them carefully around.
6. The temperature of the bath should be between 20-30C (70-86F), and at least part of the time the temperature should be closer to the 30C (86F). Black pots collect warmth from sun better.
7. Move the yarns around couple times a day.
8. After 3 or 4 days your pot should start to ferment, continue the dyeing and push the yarns back below the surface of the bath.
9. After about one week, or when you like the color, you can take yarns from the bath. I have dyed them also for one month, but there wasn't so much change in the color after the first 7-10 days that it was worth the time.
10. Shake the yarns so that you get the pieces of madder from the yarns and then wash the yarns. Add a glug of vinegar to the last rinse. When the yarns are dry, the last small pieces of madder are easy to get off by shaking and reskeining the yarns.
11. Put the pieces of madder back to the pot and use it the same way for another batch of yarn to get a lighter color.
12. When the madder doesn't seem to give any more color, you can simmer or boil the pieces for a short time and then use the bath like you would usually as hot dyeing, and you get more color out of the same madder.

Besides madder you can use roots of the Ladys Bedstraw which grows in the wild here in Finland, it gives a little lighter color than madder or you have to use more of them.
Cold dyeing is not suitable for all plants, but according to Jenny Dean's book Wild Color you can use madder, different barks, weld, goldenrod and rhubarb root this way. Madder is the only one I have used this way so far.
I do this in my greenhouse, I am not sure if even the summer temperatures in Finland would be high enough to do this outside. Usually the temperature drops too low at nights here, but in warmer countries you can do it outside in big black pots. Larger pots are better than small ones, because the temperature stays even better when there is larger volume of bath.

Now woad fills my thoughts, tomorrow I am going to listen a seminar about woad. This is organized by MTT which is a leading Finnish research institute in the agriculture and they are starting a new project. It will be interesting to hear what kind of things they are starting to research on woad.

  1. Thanks for this detailed tutorial! I will give it a try this summer. I'm thinking of digging the dyeing bucket into my compost heap for keeping it warm.

  2. thanks for the tute!!
i'm doing it and it's working out very satisfactoryly(sp?), better colors than with hot dyeing.Spain is not what you'd call cold, but i'm doing it in the shade.
will blog about it sometime next week.

  4. Thanks Liis and Neki:)

  7. Kiitos Leena valotuksesta, tarttee kokeilla! Ihan kui jossain ois ollu et krapista saattaa tulla keltasempi jos kuumentaa liikaa (tai sit muistelen jotain muuta...) joten aattelin ett tälle vois siksikin käydä toi kylmäversio.. Mut kiitos kaunis sun hienoista ohjeista!!! Värikästä loppukesää!
