Purple with polypores!! Violettia okrakäävillä!!

Ihanaa!

Wonderful! I finally got purple with Cinnamon bracket (Hapalopilus rutilans)!
I got a little more of them from a friend who had read of my failure with them the last time.
She had found them in last December and dried them, now I got 12grams. They are annual polypores, so you can't find them this time of year, only in the fall.

This is how I did it this time: I crushed the dried polypores, soaked them over night and then simmered (I didn't let them boil) for three hours and cooled the bath overnight. When the temperature had gone up to 80°C, I added some wood ash lye to raise the pH to 10. Whis this polypore you have to raise the pH to get the dyestuff to become water soluble. Next morning I strained the bath and put yarns in it. The pH was now 8. I had two 10g skeins, the other was mordanted with alum and the other was unmordanted. At first they looked ugly pale pink, but after one hour they were purple:) I put a glug of vinegar to the bath to lower the pH, and simmered another hour and the color got darker. No1 is the alum mordanted yarn and no 2 is the unmordanted as you see the color didn't take to it so strongly as with alum (and cream of tartar, I always use it also).

I put the strained polypores back to the bath, soaked for a couple of days and then simmered. I didn't add lye this time, but I think if I had, I might have gotten more color out of them.
I then put 20grams of alum mordanted yarn in the bath and got no3, very pale color, and uneven. Some parts are pale purple and some yellowish!

I have now only these small samples, but now I know what to do next fall if I find more of these polypores, it was a good experiment. I can dye at least twice as much yarn dark purple as the weight of of the dried Cinnamon brackets.

  2. Hieno tulos.

  3. Thanks Emma, I knew you would like these colors:)

  6. These are real beautiful colours. What about the fastness of these colours.

  7. Beautiful colors! Especially #1 - it's such a pretty purple, almost silvery (at least on my monitor).

I have a question for you: I have been more and more interested in natural dyeing of fibers since reading your blog. Unfortunately, I am in the U.S. and can't drop by to ask questions! Is there a book or books (hopefully with an English translation) that you would recommend on natural dyeing? Thanks!

  8. Thanks for leaving comments:)

I haven't tested these yarns yet, but according to all natural dye books, the polyporic acid, which is the main dyestuff in cinnamon bracket, is one of the most lightfast natural colors. Swedish Hjördis Lundmarks book gives it 6 for lightfastness.

Thalia, there are many Natural dye-book in English.
I think Jenny Dean's books are good for a beginner but there are many books worth reading. It is good to get the basics from a book, after that you can start experimenting. Natural dyeing is fun, and you don't have to be so technical like I am, I must be because I sell my yarns:)

  10. Dear Leena,

I am a student at Wageningen University, the Netherlands. At the moment I am doing a project in natural blue dyes and I was hoping to do some experiments with mushrooms. Riikka Räisänen from Helsinki Univeristy recommended your shop to me for possible purchasing of mushrooms. Would it be possible to obtain some mushrooms from you (either Hapalopilus nidulans or Sarcodon squamosus)? And if not, would you know any other suppliers of these species?
    Kind regards,

PS. I am sorry to ask this question in this manner, but I could not acess your webshop and I could not find an emailadres either.
