New year begins Uusi vuosi edessä

I want to thank everyone for the comments you have made, it is so nice to know you read my blog. Xmas Fair went better than I expected, but I am glad it is all over now, I was exhausted after Xmas and only now starting to feel myself again. I have just slept and done nothing... exept I had to knit something and when I didn't have enough energy to think, I made mittens with spots, only two natural sheep colors. I think though that I am going to start making experiments with many colors in the spots. Let's see what kind of mittens I end up with. I already have ideas coming, but I have to try them out. Last Sunday I then started a new pair of mittens, this is my mother's design from a few years back. I am going to make a kit from this design, but I'm not sure yet which colors would be good, I have to try out different variations. Any suggestions? The work name for these mittens is just Trees, I have to think about that too.
Usually winter is quiet time for my dyeings, but now I am running a little low on dyed yarns, so I have to start thinking about that, too. First we have to take wool to the spinnery, this week, so that we'll have enough new yarns before spring. Then I have to make inventory of the yarns that I have now and what I need to dye first, I already know that madder will be one of the first colors I need. I have still quite a lot of dyestuffs luckily left, different dried mushrooms (yes, mushrooms dyeings still coming), dried birch and buckthorn leaves, rhubarb roots, bark from local alder and buckthorn (as well as german buckthorn bark) and also oak bark. In the winter I can collect lichens from fallen branches and I have also polypores waiting. And then of course madder, cochineal and indigo. I have a lot of things in my mind and who knows what new things my new dye book inspires me to try out.
Right now I am taking it slowly; I think this dark time of year is just right for that. I am happy that now when nature is resting, also I can rest more and when the days become longer, also I will wake up earlier in the morning and will get more things done. In January I feel like a bear sleeping in it's cave through winter and waiting for spring. This is the best time to gather energy and new ideas!

  2. Oikein mukavaa uutta vuotta.

  3. Your mittens are beautiful. This time of year gives you a chance to plan and think about what you want to do. I enjoy the slow, contemplative time.

    All the best for 2008.

  5. I love your mittens. you are quite right to be bear curled up in your cave! I htink I will join you as I feel I want to hibernate but also like having a little time to play too.

Why don't you try fermenting buckthorn bark? I think the dark red you get with copper would look beautiful with the natural colours of the wool.

  8. Happy New Year! Both of those mittens are just beautiful and quite different.
We've been sleeping quite late here, too, with the dark mornings. Dyeing has been on my mind, too, and while I don't have any wool to send off "to the spinnery", there is yarn on the way in the mail and also a box of black walnut hulls, frozen, out on the porch waiting to go into the dyepot.
Enjoy this quiet time of year.

  9. Thanks for the comments:)
Lilmisstitches, I think good books to start with are
Jenny Dean: The craft of natural dyeing
    or maybe even better
    Jenny Dean: Wild Color
but there are many more as good books. Dyeing is fun, even if the result is not always predictable.
Helen, I think I will try fermenting the buckthorn bark. Thanks for the idea! I have now birch ashes and need to make lye first from them. I have to look up your recipe for that:)
I have tried once with walnut hulls, but got only beige, most likely I didn't have enough of them, because I have seen wonderfully rich browns other people have dyed with it (in the internet)!

Kiitos väriehdotuksista, vihreää tulee ainakin ja ehkä punaistakin:)
